It was an interesting Sushi place. I was unable to initially enjoy the food because of the raw fish they were serving that did not look palatable. However, the waiter offered me another alternative which was far better than what my certificate offered. Then I enjoyed my meal! The place is clean, great concept, not your regular Japanese restaurant. My husband on the other hand enjoyed everything that was served him and is planning to go back there.

The Robata grill is really
The Robata grill is really their specialty. The food is delicious, the presentation / delivery of the grill is lots of fun, too. Definitely a place to have a drink and enjoy good food.

Good Japanese spot nearby
Good Japanese spot nearby Times Square. Great decor with high ceiling, and floor to ceiling windows, real fresh raw fish, nice sushi bar, not the typical sushi place.

Great Japanese Cuisine
I really enjoyed this robata! It's authentic without appearing gimmicky. The food tastes wonderful and while its probably a little "Americanized" the large number of Japanese patrons suggests its a taste of home. Sit at the counter and enjoy having your food presented to you by the chef. If you've no idea what to order simply choose the tasting menu for 5 courses of new and delicious food. I'd happily return.

time travel spoiled
dining at inakaya usually takes me back to the edo-period. to me it means the virtues of the senses were cherished to the utmost. the atmosphere there does that to me. and the food is near to perfect in my humble opinion. too bad that a shabby service ruins such an experience dramatically. usually, the service is fine even though not great as usually japanese culture would suggest. however, yesterday, the service was an offense. if it was not for my guests from germany, i would have left and gone elsewhere to dine. sorry to say.

The food was incredible. I had the yellowtail and my boyfriend had the beef skewers, and we shared orders of asparagus and mushrooms. There wasn't a single piece of food that wasn't cooked to perfection. The staff was wonderful as well. This may be our new favorite place

Solid bento box for lunch
Their standard sushi/sashimi bento box is solid. The salmon and other fish was incredibly fresh. I would definitely return. It was a bit noisy for a business lunch acceptable. The ambiance is similar to restaurants I have been to in Tokyo and Osaka, very authentic.

Above average but not great
Very good across all categories -- was hoping for something more but can't complain. Solid, decent, would likely return.

If you enjoy traditional Japanese
If you enjoy traditional Japanese food you'll love this place. My sushi and soba soup were delicious. The wine list was good too. The interior is beautiful and the staff were friendly and attentive. The restaurant filled up quickly.

Excellent traditional Japanese dining in a nice open, bright restaurant. Great food, great interior, and awesome service, as well. One of the best Japanese restaurants in New York City. Also, the best fresh mochi I've ever had.

Charcoal Grilled Japanese
Not your normal BBQ spot. Came first for a party dinner for 2 with 7 course Kaiseiki dinner. Great service. Quiet on for dinner.

Best Robata Yaki in Manhattan
Recently there are multiple robata yaki restaurants in Manhattan. I believe Inakaya rank the best due to -
#2: Covenient location
#3: Resonable hours of service
#4: Price/performance excellent
#5: Very spacious atmosphere

Food + Culture
Inakaya's food alone can impress anyone like traditional Japanese. In addition, performance and demonstration of Japanese culture will make your meal more interesting. It's particularly good to bring someone who is interested about it's culture.

Celebrated a birthday here. Service was attentive, food was excellent, reservation was honored (for an early table). As for the birthday, the wait staff delivered the dessert, and made a very lovely presentation. Two notes - we only ordered sushi/sashimi, and the meal was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. Grilled sweet potato is a must. We will return to sample the cooked entrees. Second, when we departed at 8:30p, there was a wait. Don't know how reservations would fare for a later time. All in all, great experience.
6/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had never done Robata Yaki before but had a fantastic experience! We were actually very late for our reservation because of horrible traffic in from Jersey, and we called the restaurant. They held our table and were wonderful when we explained that we were now in a hurry because we had show tickets. Our waiter said he would rush everything, and the cooks were great. All in all a fantastic experience. The food was great, so fresh and delicious. Definitely a must do.

Japanese for beginners
I've always wanted to to Japanese when visiting NYC but am not well versed. This place was PERFECT for me. Large, Modern but quaint and quirky in their delivery.
Menu was vast and easy to understand and they had soooo many options from BBQ to noodles, sushi to saki.
Easy to find with a big storefront and played greaet 80's and 90's music which made my food taste even better!
It was a great date night for me and the hubby.

The best japanese food in New York
We had the six-course prix fixe meal and was amazing. Food was seasoned to perfection and the Sushi was excellent. This is a special occasion type restaurant, definitely not kid friendly, but was excellent for my anniversary dinner. They also have a wonderful pre-theater lunch that is reasonably priced... around 35 bucks. Oh... the little thing that looks like a tiny welcome mat... that was the coaster for your drink. Found that one out the hard way.
7/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Went here to surprise wife while in new York. Boy was I surprised. Great food , chefs and all around. Would recommend to the highest level.

I went for restaurant week
I went for restaurant week with my sister, and it was wonderful! I got the week menu, and my sister ordered from their usual menu. Both came out really fresh, and was one of the best (if not the best) we have had. They had a time to make mochi, and got the crowd involved too! They gave out the mochi we made in the end of our meal. Over all the experience was great and the staff were so friendly! I told my friends to check this place out!

Awesome sushi bar and fresh fish
My husband and I stopped in during restaraunt week. We had the prixe fix meal and added a few other dishes. The sashimi was excellent - fresh and tasty. The sushi salmon roll was good - seaweed was still crunchy and not at all soggy. The Kobe beef skewers was cooked just right - medium rare. We also had scallops - we saw them open it right up in front of us and cook it. The egg custard was smooth. Overall I think the food here was excellent - fresh and reasonably priced for Manhattan.

A little expensive but DELICIOUS
I love Japanese food and it's usually on the expensive side. I have always passed by this place a couple of times on my way to work and I finally had the time to drop by. The dishes were quite small for an expensive price, but totally worth it at the end of the night. The ambience of the restaurant was wonderful except for the loud music playing in the restaurant. The chefs and servers greet everyone when they enter the restaurant. My stomach and I were satisfied. The rice ball was a little charred and overcooked so it was a little hard to eat, but the sashimi were amazing. I have never eaten such good sushi and mochi ice cream either. I definitely recommend if you have the money to treat your stomach for their amazing food.
7/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
The experience was very nice.. staff was very attentive; would definitely recommend to others, and will return myself when I'm back in NY.

Great authentic Japanese experience
Inakaya is a great place to experience traditional Japanese dining outside of Japan. The staff was great. The food was great. Everything about the place feels authentic yet modern. Woul definitely recommend!

Very wicked sitting by the Robata table....love it!

Really great food and service
Great place for dinner as we tried it during Restaurant Week. Food had generous portions and the sushi was so fresh, it melts in our mouth. So awesome! We left super happy.
8/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Freshest fish I've ever had
The sushi and sashimi were amazingly fresh. Definitely the best fish Ive ever had. When you walk in you are greeted in Japanese and its a very vibrant atmosphere. Portions are on the small side- that why I didn't give 5 stars
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Japanese Restaurant
Fresh sashimi and sushi. The "Layered Mochi ice cream" is the best desert I've ever had
8/8/2013 5:00:00 PM
Both my friend and I enjoyed
Both my friend and I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Cordial and attentive staff. Very convenient location as well. Will definitely return.

Overall the experience was
Overall the experience was pretty good. It was my first time at a hibachi restaurant so was definitley expecting something spectacular, but I was not dissapointed. We were seated right when we arrived. The people at the hostess stand were extremely friendly and inviting. The gentleman who came over to take our order was also very nice and gave us suggestions in what to order. The food itself was really good in flavor. The chefs did an awesome job cooking the Sea Bass, Kobe beef skewers and asparagus we had. I really wished the Kobe beek portions were a bit bigger. I would definitely come back here!
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had wonderful sushi and sashimi! The service was attentive and friendly and quick. The restaurant itself is very entertaining as well as watching the chefs at work.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

Happy grilled food. Happy birthday!
My birthday was so memorable!
Thank you All at Inakaya. Beats, great grilled food and wonderful service!
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
I didnt really know what to expect but from the moment I entered it felt like I was in Japan! Definitely as experience I would recommend to all my friends and family who enjoy Japanese cuisine. The food was amazing compared to other popular restaurants that participate in NYC restaurant week, by far one of the more memorable experiences and I would go back and order a la carte. Everything that was ordered was amazing and beyond expectation. They treat all patrons the same even those who are there for restaurant week, unlike many other restaurants that treat restaurant week participants like second citizens. My only complaint is that the tables don't accommodate more than four individuals; very uncomfortable seating arrangements.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Inakaya has great food, friendly staff, wonderful chefs who prepare the food...it is just so much fun to go here for us! Good location...not too far from Times Square, it is easy to walk to theater or wherever after...we go every time we visit NYC.

Inakaya Robata Grill
Inakaya Robata Grill is a great place to eat, it's novel being a robata grill, and I love the busy bustling atmosphere. A bit noisy, but still pleasant. The decor is modern and upscale providing a huge counter and table service too. The counter is the most fun as you can watch the cooks prepare food and your entrees are served on long wooden paddles. The food appeals to all palates with fish, seafood, meat and vegetable dishes and a raw/sushi bar too.. Everything I've tasted from the grill is good and there's a great selection of hot and cold saki. All together a satisfying and different
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent authentic Japanese
Excellent authentic Japanese food near Broadway theaters. Could have done without the staff shouting in Japanese every time someone came into the restaurant, though.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Definitely Worth Going
The staff is impressive. They are friendly and efficient. The food was delicious. We dined around 7:30 and our food choices were fresh and available.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent sushi (as should
Excellent sushi (as should be expected) and grilled fish! Five seeweed salad was remarkably good in multiple tastes and colors. And so much fun to watch cooks preparing food and serving your beer on a "shovel" at Robata counter!

The food is great and service amazing. Thoroughly recommended

Traditional JapanesRobatayaki Grill
As a born Japanese, I have enjoyed Robatayaki Grill back there but not here in New York until I came Inakaya last weekend.
Very traditional Robatayaki style with unique presentation. A bit pricy. Good Sake list.
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had some robata grills and sushi. Everything was good quality and very tasty, especially Crab legs were superb! You could really taste the sweetness of the flesh mixed with nice robota grill flavour - best we ever had. Sushi were also wonderful quality, especially fatty tuna, sea urchin and salmon roe. I lived in Japan and my wife is Japanese, so you could count on our review. However we would prefer smaller portion so that we could have eaten more variety of food. Particularly kaku ni was way too large. Also would have preferred if the air con wasn't so strong. But definitely recommend this restaurant and coming back for more.

Dinner with Friends
I had some friends visiting from out of town and we came to Inakaya, great restaurant, it was pretty busy, so i had to ask for water, ask for tea and ask for everything, instead of the wait staff being more observant. It was slightly irritating, but the quality of the food and the atmosphere made up for it. Not my first time here and won't be the last either.
10/12/2013 5:00:00 PM
Not just sushi . . .
But it does have great sushi too. The robata/yakatori experience is very authentic and something different than the usual Japanese restaurants in NYC. However, there can a pretty hefty price tag if one strays away from the prix fixe.
10/16/2013 5:00:00 PM
Delicious for a light meal
A few grilled vegetables and fish, washed down with tea makes for a pleasant and dietetic evening meal.
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
A little different than Japan.
My son and I tried Inakaya NYC for the first time, having been to Inakaya in Roppongi, Tokyo about 30 - 40 time over the years of living there. While the food in New York was excellent, I thought they could have/should have done a little more to capture the ambience of Inakaya, Japan. There was too much separation between the chefs and the counter customers so some of the atmosphere was lost. As far as the food; the sashimi was some of the best I've had in the US, and while the grilled "kinki dai" was excellent, I would have preferred the skin be a little crispier.
If you go there, only sit at the counter. Sitting at the table makes it little different from any other Japanese restaurant in NYC.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Ok, but not the best
Food was good, but not the best sushi I've had. Eel was slightly boney. Portions were underwhelming, especially at sushi prices. Good central location to meet with up- and down-town friends, and right near subway. I'd go there again.

A place to go everytime im in nyc
I really like this restaurant first time i went there 5 yrs ago and i kept coming back. Lunch menu is a great deal and i love their cod fish and rolls! (Before i become vegetarian, but my dad and sister love it and order it everytime) the service is really good too! Attentive and friendly! Highly recommended the nyc branch!
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
A lot of fun. It's like theater when sitting at the bar and watching the staff work.

Fun place to eat before a show!
My husband and I found the place on the web and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was good, the sake list was extensive. The decor and ambience were fun. The servers place your food and drinks on wooden paddles and everyone yells in japanese as they hand the food to the diners! The wait staff was very nice, everyone smiling and truly concerned to ensure you were enjoying yourself. We will definitely go back!
