Chez Panisse is world famous, so it hardly needs yet another endorsement. The food and service were truly exceptional. I had been waiting years to go here and I was not disappointed. They recently had a kitchen fire that will put them out of commission for renovations for awhile, but I'm sure that they will return to their normal excellence soon.

Dinner at Chez Panisse
I dined for the first time at Chez Panisse on June 27, 2013, about a week after their reopening. The service, food, wine and atmosphere were fantastic. Each course exceeded the prior course. We started with salmon carpaccio with cucumber relish and moved on to ravioli with an intensely flavored confit of tomatoes and basil. The main course was grilled beef tenderloin with morels served with a terrific gratin of corn, fava beans and kale(?). Finally, dessert was a meyer lemon tart. It was as perfect a meal as I have ever had.

Still a destination restaurant
I felt we had to go to Chez Panisse and was dismayed by some very bad reviews, but it was a must experience in my opinion. I am so glad we got in! The restaurant feels so nice. The new porch was beautiful. Our server was outstanding and the food was delicious.

We eagerly anticipated our
We eagerly anticipated our dinner at Chez Panisse which had just reopened after the March fire. Everything about dinner last Saturday exceeded our expectations. The service was gracious without being cloying, the food better than ever (the set menu was perfectly balanced--courses echoed the flavors), and the decor celebrated the easy California version of Craftsman style. We visit the restaurant each time we are in California and are so pleased that the restaurant once again is one of the highlights of our annual trip to Berkeley.

Everything was perfect - the food, wine, service, etc. Couldn't have asked for a nicer evening.

Bastille Day at Chez Panisse
What a treat. The food was so delicious and the wine pairing was great as well. Alice was onsite and came over to have a small chat with us, she is lovely as we have seen her on TV. We had roasted garlic souffle, seafood soup and the to-die-for lamb rack and loin stuffed with herbs and garlic, and for dessert we had the torte glacee. We did not mind the garlic at all. We loved Chez Panisse.

early Wed. dinner in restaurant
We went on a Wednesday for the 6-6:30p seating. Gianni and his assistant server were very good, nearby only when needed. They sat us in the newly rebuilt front room at a cozy table for 2; the front room (with only 4 tables) is bright and just right for couples. Appetizer (halibut) and beef tenderloin were both very good. The apricot souffle was ordinary yet the cream, with apricot kernel extract, was wonderful. A slight flub on the dessert wine recommendation although it may have been the wrong time for wine for me due to the intensity of the cream for the souffle. A nice yet pricey meal with near-perfect atmosphere.

The Dinner is a special 2 Hour event. The appetizer was served shortly after we were seated. Our drinks and bread basket were promptly replenished throughout the meal. Each course was brought quickly when we were ready for them. And we had plenty of time to savor and enjoy each one. The service was impeccable. Any questions we had were answered thoroughly and cheerfully. Chez Panisse lived up to its reputation as a top tier world class restaurant.

East Bay Pride
We had a great dining experience here with 2 other couples. We were greeted right away at the table with an apertif made with cava and herbs. Chilled and just enough to wake up our taste buds. The appetizer was an onion tart served with green beans and cherry tomatoes...and the crust was incredibly flaky. I was trying to pace myself for a long dinner but I still had to eat that entire tart. Next was a cod dish made with pesto and little potatoes. The best cod I have ever tasted. The beef was a thinly sliced rib eye and mouth wateringly good. Our server was the best-polished, seeming to appear just when needed but not hovering. She guided me through the extensive french wine list and everyone loved her selections. Fantastic!

I had squab for the first
I had squab for the first time in my life. It was tasty but I have to say, I found a few of the dishes a tad on the salty side. I also feel the black eyed peas were slightly undercooked. The pasta with the Tomales Bay clams was simply devine and I really enjoyed the starter salad with the wild greens. I felt the portion size of the starter salad was bit small and maybe two shrimp could have been provided instead of just one that was about 1.5 inches long.
All in all, it was a lovely experience...just hold back on the salt a bit.

Lived up to reputation
Local food treasures, extravagant and delicious, Cold fruit soup, Goat with peppers, Catalan creme, and deliciously sweet sauce. Flavors and freshness, without obscure exoticism. Wine pairings fun, easy. Prairie style columns window closely surrounding diners in "porch" area in the front of the house, downstairs floor, much quieter than upstairs. Cozy, intimate. The wait staff changed between courses, seemed like the particular cook or maitre d', along with our main waitress reappearing, with a nice conversational attitude. I loved peaking around the corner at the famous kitchen, in the middle, A lot more authentic than some of the other restaurants I have been to that try to emulate the farm to table or updated gourmet cuisine.

Sadly, I was underwhelmed...
I have wanted to dine at Chez Panisse for as long as I can remember, and managed to secure a reservation during a recent trip to the Bay Area. Although the food was excellent and wine pairing sublime, the atmosphere was hectic and the service harried. I expected a more relaxing and elegant experience. There was a much more convivial scene happening in the café upstairs where we awaited our seating in the dining room. Although busy, the Maitre d' and staff there were efficient, attentive and friendly. If you've not had the table d'hôte experience at CP, by all means give it a try. However, if you want to experience excellent food and wine, great service in a casual, bistro-like setting... head upstairs instead. You won't be disappointed.

Everything was great except the room temperature was too high; it was quite warm and a bit uncomfortable, even though it was a cool and foggy Berkeley night.

A mouthwatering scrumptous dinner!
The food was outstanding in all respects! The first course- a potato salad was so good I wanted to lick the plate! Of course that was not acceptable for fine dining. Excellent service and for a four course meal, the pace between courses could not have been better!

Great Aniversary dinner
We enjoyed our aniversary dinner at Chez Panisse.
The dinner was awesome, and their services are also very friendly and make the customer's feeling better.
Also guests around our seat were celebrating their birthday.
We could celebrate our aniversary and their birthday.

Excellent separate vegetarian menu
Chez panisse uses a fixed menu which varies every day. Usually the menu includes a number of meat dishes, and a number of yelp and other reviews complain about the lack of vegetarian options. However, upon arrival we informed our server that we are vegetarian and he supplied us with a separate menu that proved to be very delicious and certainly not just the traditional menu less the meat. I would definitely go here again.

our new special occasion restaurant
I brought my wife to Chez Panisse for her birthday and we had a wonderful evening that kept getting better and better. The food was delicious and we appreciated how attentive our service was. Each dish we ate had a very balanced design between vegetables, meat and fish. My wife is Japanese and the portions were just right for her and I. We felt great afterwards and continued to talk about the experience even a couple days later. We can't wait to come back!

A mythical experience
I realize my dream, to visit Chez Panisse, and your great, very special - and simple - food.
The service was great, just in time and attent.

More than I could have hoped for
Chez Panisse was an unexpected combination of elegant and friendly. Impeccable service, sublime food and simply delightful! I will try to go every time I'm in the area.

Fantastic with the details
I am so happy, they really take my hypersensitive to the black pepper in the more professional way. I have the same menu that my husband, but prepared without Black pepper, was awesome!!!!

Chez Panisse is heaven. It is not about snob or foodie appeal, or being "better" than other restaurants. It is about the experience of food, from farm to table, in a reverent and spiritually nourishing way. Everything is done with thoughtfulness, care, and artistry, in a way that is not ostentatious but instead straightforward and proud. And that meyer lemon soufflé...
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
casual fine dining
Fixed menu is nice. Not too little or too much food is served. Just the right portions and no decisions have to be made other than what wine you want.
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Over all was excellent. Only not impressed with the ice cream dessert.

It was a perfect evening! The food was as marvelous as ever, service perfect and the room really beautifully restored after the fire.

We wanted a perfect evening, and we got it: perfect food, perfect service, perfect wine pairings. There is nowhere else like Chez Panisse.

My Favorite by far!
Chez Panisse maintains the highest quality dining experience year in and year out. Their daily menu is intriguing without being pretentious. Their meticulous food preparation yields simply delicious results. Their staff are knowledgable, helpful, friendly, and attentive. Chez Panisse is my favorite restaurant by far.

Stellar Berkely Gem
Once again this intimate space surpassing all that has gone before-perfect friendly service and each course absolutely divine. I don't know how they do it-the freshness and execution of each dish is astonishingly good. I envy diners who have yet to Immerse themselves here. Merci!

I live in Chicago, but if I ever get the chance to be on the West Coast, I always make it an absolute to dine at Chez Panisse. The food and service are always fabulous! I have long been a fan of Alice Waters and what she brought to the dining table. Always a pleasure!

Hands down one of my favorite
Hands down one of my favorite restaurants. The wine pairing was awesome. Four stars because second course was luke warm, not hot enough.

Best restaurant experience
The food was the best I have ever had at any restaurant. The service was amazing. The overall experience was the most memorable and best dining experience I have ever had.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
It's no surprise that I am giving this restaurant a great review....plenty have before me. The service was fantastic and the food was truly inspired. The group I was with really enjoyed everything that touché their palate. We also were able to meet our wine importing idol and as we are all viticulturists and winemakers, it was a true delight. All in all, I'd say it was money well spent.

Finally had dinner at Chez Panisse
I have eaten in Chez Panisse's upstairs restaurant several times. Try to make it there any time I'm in the Bay Area. But this was my first dinner in their prix fixe restaurant. Price was a bit steep, but the service, ambiance, and of course. the food was worth every penny. It was a special dinner with my brother and husband and we all enjoyed it. THANK YOU!

Excellent but missing wow factor
We had a delicious four course meal which included a chickory & pickled lettuce salad, grilled sea bass, lamb chops and a lemon meringue tart. Service was excellent and the ambiance was warm and cozy. However somehow I just didn't feel that it was such a fabulous, unforgettable experience. Perhaps I had set my expectations too high but I wanted to see what all the hype about Chez Pannise was about and just didn't feel like I found it. The food was good but not much better than say, Wood Tavern. I feel like Chez Pannise is worth trying but isn't so wonderful that I'm anxiously looking forward to a return visit. Perhaps the air conditioning vent blowing at my feet during my entire meal lessened the experience and hastened my exit.

Wonderful as always
Very happy to put ourselves in the hands of the chefs at Chez Panisse. Love Alice Waters and her whole philosophy. Our company had a very important dinner here, and we brought our favourite client. Dishes were wonderful, and our whole team and our guest had a wonderful time. Thank you Chez Panisse!
11/19/2013 4:00:00 PM
Totally a great experience. Would suggest one improvement - when the customer adds another tip to the bill along with built in tip, we suggest that the server reconfirm with the customer if that was their intention. This would avoid over tipping and creating a negative experience in an otherwise excellent experience.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
Still going strong
The frisee salad with lardons and poached egg was a great start. Then the duck breast was the best I have ever had. The third course , the dessert finished a wonderful meal. The meal was so much better than the description in the menu because the chefs manage to make even foods we don't normally like taste delicious. The service was professional and friendly. The beautifully restored room we sat in towards the front of the house absolutley glowed, making our experience even more enjoyable. All of this wonderfulness comes at a price, of course, and $24 for a glass of champagne seemed to be a bit too much.

The last time we dined at
The last time we dined at Chez Panisse was over 20 years ago and 20 years later it is still the best restaurant we ever dined at. From the curly endive and chanterelle salad, the Dungeness crab and smoked black cod chowder followed by the Zinfandel marinated duck breast and ending with the black walnut ice cream crepe it was truly an epicurean delight!
Alice Waters and her staff are commended for delivering an outstanding meal...it was the perfect ending to a delightful epicurean vacation in the Bay Area.
