The design your own guacamole
The design your own guacamole and molcajete for two features on the menu are outstanding and the bartender makes a mean mojito too! It doesn't take too many people for it to get really loud really fast, so it's probably not a place to go if you are looking for a quiet conversation. Overall, really enjoyed our experience.

Pre-Cinco de Mayo Delight!
Since our anniversary is May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) which fell on Sunday this year, we were in search of a Mexican-themed restaurant to celebrate on Saturday night, May 4. We were lucky to find Xochitl. The food was excellent and the service was superb starting with the "choose your own ingredients gracamole" to the dense chocolate dessert. Also, coffee is served in a french press which makes 2.5 cups -- plenty for two people. Great ambience restaurant on Headhouse Square. I highly recommend Xochitl and we will definitely go back.

I was almost licking the plate.....
I found the menu interesting enough to make a reservation. Wow, what a great place. I was almost licking the plate. I love spicey and they delivered. Great service and the mojitos were different.....order one and you will be a fan. I am so coming back!!!!!
5/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
We were a party of eight and each one of us enjoyed Xochitl. We started off with great drinks at the bar, followed by "build your own guacamole," and fished with our main dishes which were delicious I had the spicy beef brisket tacos.... Yum!
The service was even better! We really fealt like they wanted us there! Being a larger party we were there for a while and they could not have been more accommodating. We will definately be back!

The General Manager, Adam, is incredible. He made the experience so wonderful, from recommending wines, to just general conversation. The food was incredible but I would go back just for him!

Best guacamole! And fantastic
Best guacamole! And fantastic tacos and ceviche! Plus top shelf tequila selection.
Our go to place for authentic Mexican food. Consistently excellent!

I Love Mexican Food and have eaten at almost every Mexican Restaurant in Philly and New York, Xochitl has made my top favorite list. FOOD, DRINKS, SERVICE, is A+++ Highly Recommend
5/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
I rated the noise level as quite because I had a early reservation it was for 6-6:15 as we were going to catch a early movie. Food was fantastic and had many options. The guacamole is FANTASTIC as you build your own. They give you a card and you tell them what 2 items you want in it and if you want more they will charge $1 for everything over 2. Menu was nice, we took the taco special which was $29 pp and filled us well. Still had room for dessert which was ok. Had a chocolate dessert, forget the name but not what I thought it would be at all. The only thing that Xochitl (so-cheet) needs to do is step up dessert in my opinion. Fantastic food, great spot as afterwards you can hit south street, historic head house square & Penn's Landing

Delicious all around!
Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. Reservation for 4 at 7:15. We were promptly seated and the server was very friendly and attentive. Food and drinks were delicious! Margarita was excellent, sangria was great, guacamole was fantastic and the fish tacos were awesome! I'd definitely recommend Xochitl.

We enjoyed our time at Xochitl.
We enjoyed our time at Xochitl. We ordered the "made to order" guacamole, which was great. I love their chips! We also ordered the molcajete to share, which was pretty good. There was almost no one in the restaurant so it was nice and quiet and we got our food quickly. I would recommend people try this restaurant.
6/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Customized guacamole, carnitas tacos, braised short rib tamale, solid margaritas. All well prepared. Actually, all superbly prepared. I'd go back anytime. I dig this place. Small, cozy and wonderful.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been here a number of times and chose Xochitl for a group of friends, seven of us. WE were the only ones on a Sunday at 5:3op, and we carried on!
Our waiter was very polite, informative, friendly and professional. The food is always great, the guacamole always done nicely. We had Sangria and their house Margarita, both are yummy! All of my friends loved this place.
Parking is easy. Be mindful of wearing heels with the cobblestone streets and sidewalks. I wore wedges.
A friend turned me on to this place for Brunch and I have taken many friends there - all who love it.
I will continue to enjoy dining there and I'm sure you will too.

we enjoyed xochitl
Really good meal. Outstanding guacamole, ceviche, margarita, etc.

Not your typical Mexican restaurant
Xochitl is tucked away in a relatively quiet area, cobblestone streets, close-packed old buildings, but plenty of nearby parking. The restaurant is a small, just one dining area not far from a fairly noisy but small bar. Their drink menu includes incredible scratch-made Margaritas, several of which our table tried throughout our dinner. They're pricey, but made the evening fun. Food choices are not your typical Americanized Mexican, but the selection of dishes did not disappoint anyone in our party of four. Among us, we had the salmon, the Pollo Frito, and the shrimp, and all of us loved it. We ate on a Tuesday evening and had no problem with reservations, although it was not crowded at all so we need not have worried.

Incredible, Incredible, Incredible
We absolutely loved our experience here. From the hospitality of the owner, education about tequilas, to the marvelous food we can't wait to go back.
7/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
My sister and I spent a fun filled Saturday evening at Xochitl. Our waiter, Josh, was great. We sat down and told him that we planned on eating our way through (most of) the appetizer menu. We started with the Blood Orange Martini (which is a yummy-d up version of a margarita). The design it yourself guacamole was an inspired idea. It was delicious! The Queso Fundido with the chorizo was excellent and not overly spicy. The mole chicken drummettes were good, but we would have been happy to have a bowl of the mole and forgone the chicken (a little too much fat - a little too little meat). Crab ceviche? Yum.
Mango cake for dessert? Yup! We had fun, the wait staff was sweet, and we'll go back.
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very good drinks, very good food. Came late so they were winding down a bit but still felt welcomed. An error in our order was fixed immediately and with a smile. Killer guacamole.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great from start to finish!
Wonderful from start to finish...The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable; the food was amazing! Small plates--so everyone got to sample the drummettes, fish tacos, salad + the yummy side dishes. The variety on the drink menu makes selecting a cocktail a challenging--but rest assured, everyone was more than satisfied with their choices! It's a spot I'll definitely return to...and soon!
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always an Excellent experience at Xochitl, One of my favorite spots in the city. A MUST GO TO!!!
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love this place to get away from the busy restaurants in center city! Cute place for couples or for small groups. Normally noise level is low which is great talking! Delicious food especially the guacamole which you chose what they put in it!
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Definitely going back
We have been there a few times and plan to return. The food is always top notch, and we had multiple people come to our table to talk to us about food, drinks, specials, etc. Very pleasant staff. We use this for special occasions where we want to relax with good food as opposed to spend lots in center city.
8/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Mexican food in the city. Perfect for this little area in Center City. Guacamole (made-to-order!) was fantastic, as were the carnitas tacos and the tuna ceviche. The sangria was so-so and the service was just average. The atmosphere is very loud and vibrant, good for going out with friends or a night on the town, probably not the best date spot if you're looking for something romantic and quiet.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fun, good drinks, great entrees
Went here on a Saturday night with my significant other and another couple. If you order guacamole, you get to choose the ingredients that you want to include, which was really fun and original. The red snapper ceviche (appetizer) was only okay, but all four of the entrees we ordered were unreal. Fried chicken, shrimp chili, short ribs, and camerones con saldo. Everyone shared, and everyone loved. The shrimp chili nogado was definitely my favorite, I could have eaten two of them because they were so good.
Our server was a total sweetheart and very knowledgable about each dish. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, but warn that it is a little pricey.

Great dining experience and service
We came for restaurant week to try out the food, we had been in for drinks before but never eaten. The food was great! Good quality ingredients prepared and presented well. The drinks were awesome as well. Lots of hand crafted specialty cocktails and wine list. The bartender Kate was very knowledgable, friendly, attentive and put great care into preparing our drinks! Overall we had a wonderful dining experience. We will definitely be back!
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The ambiance is quite good, though one loud table can create a cacophony. The food is a mix - some items, like the guacamole, are excellent. Others are just overpriced, perhaps befitting a neighborhood and a city that don't know much about the magic of great Mexican food.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Snap & Pop Taste Sensation
Was there this Saturday night. Made the reservations two months prior. The manager was kind enough to call me and inform that it was restaurant week and that there was a fixed menu. Great service move on his part, our party of seven was fine with the fixed restaurant week menu. We sampled the home made guacamole, the empanadas, the tortilla soup and the flat breads as appetizers. The dinners were spot on fusion of flavor and spice - the poblano stuffed pepper, the skirt steak, the stuffed chicken, the short rib and the fish taco's with home made slaw were top notch. Our entire table was more than satisfied with the restaurant week menu. Several conversations about going back to sample the rest of the menu soon!
9/20/2013 5:00:00 PM
Food and noise
On the plus side, I cannot say enough about how good the food is here. I had heard it was good, and I was not not disappointed. The four-course restaurant week menu had an excellent variety of choices, and everything was delicious. The made-to-order guacamole was fresh and bright. Both our appetizers were fantastic, Main course dishes of steak with potatoes and the shrimp with sweet plantain cakes were perfectly done, and rich without being overpowering or too heavy. I was really impressed.
My only complaint was the noise level, The rating choice of "energetic" is a polite way of saying "I couldn't hear myself think." It may have just been the particular group behind us, but I don't think so. Still, we'll be back!
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
I really enjoyed the guacamole
I really enjoyed the guacamole and drinks! The service was also very good.

Tasty Drinks and Delicious Food
Great for restaurant week, food and drinks were great!
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love the make your on guacamole. Delicious food. Good sangria, though pitcher of it is a bit pricey.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fun, Fresh, & Fantastic!
The guacamole card that lets you customize your guac order is indicative or the service level and attention to detail provided at this cozy little Headhouse Square restaurant! We were a party of 2 during restaurant week, so we expected a busy night. We sat at a small high top in the bar area which was perfect for us - we enjoyed the energy of the bar and the staff bustling by. The servers were friendly and attentive, willing to offer suggestions and recommendations, and extremely familiar with the menu items. The drinks were fabulous as well - with the fresh-squeezed citrus they promised. We tried 2 and I'd love to go back and sample the rest! Loved the decor and lighting. The short rib was tender and delicious. Overall great experience!

First-timers, recommend trying it.
My husband and I were looking for a place to spend a nice Friday night out for dinner. I searched a couple of social networks and this place had an interesting menu, lot of good reviews and it just happened to be the last day of restaurant week. The food, atmosphere and service did not disappoint. The best part of the meal was the fresh guacamole with a postcard-sized menu of items to add, which included things like pistachios, truffles, pomegranate, red onion, jalapeño, habanero, and even shrimp, crabmeat and tuna. Appetizers (salad and empanadas), entrees (chicken relleno and braised short ribs) and dessert (tres leche cake and chocolate tart) were also very good. We also had specialty margaritas, beer on tap, and French pressed coffee
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Aside from originaly being asked to seat in the basement dining area - alone and with raging air conditioner..we ultimtely ate upstairs in bar area which was great..offered restaurant week (although ended day before!) and all food was excellent..and a lot of it!
Loved the ambience- really felt like a small spot you'd find in Riviera Maya

Great Birthday Experience
I planned my sister's 40th birthday dinner for 8 people and the staff at Xochitl was very accommodating even though people in our party were running late. The bartender was amazing and fun! The food was authentic and the presentation was fabulous. I highly recommend Xochitl for an enjoyable dinner for two or a small group!

Delicious up scale Mexican fare. Truly impressive. Delicious guacamole. Tasty drinks. Fantastic entrees.

If you are in the mood for Mexican food and find yourself in Philly, ,Xochiti is a great find. Staff is fun and helpful in making recommendations, food is well prepared, served hot and very tasty.

Great service. Great food.
This was my wife and my first visit and it was for our anniversary. We were extremely happy with our selection. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. I ordered the "manager's flight" (3 tequilas) and the manager came over to describe not only which tequilas he choose and why, but also answered all my questions about tequila in general and these selections in particular. Our waitress was the best. Great personality. She thoroughly knew the menu and made some very helpful suggestions based on our tastes. This was a moderately pricey (for us) dinner ($150 before tip), but worth every penny.

It was a quiet night in Old
It was a quiet night in Old City Philly. We are around 8:00 and we ate light but the service and food were great. Had a good bottle of wine (a Malbec). It was a wonderful ending to a long day. I would definitely return but hopefully with a bigger appetite. I'm dying to try the short ribs (which our waiter highly recommended).

Quite a Find
An upscale Mexican restaurant that was a very pleasant surprise. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. The portions were generous and the quality was top notch. They also have an excellent tequila bar. Xochitl is far superior to Tequila's and is now my favorite Mexican restaurant in Philly.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was fantastic. Our server Jessica was knowledgable, attentive and made great recommendations. Our first margaritas were absolutely delicious. Our second round tasted a little different. Only thing keeping this review from 5 stars all around. Great meal!
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I spent our anniversary here and had a great meal.
10/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
cool, warm, spicy!
Cool and appealing little restaurant and bar space, warm in tone and feel. Service was friendly and efficient, we dined on a Sunday, it was not crowded, nor empty. We enjoyed the Vera Cruz fish dish. The stuffed pepper had a bit of a kick and a dynamite mole sauce, although the filling was a bit too sweet with dried cranberries for my taste. The DIY guacamole was tasty also. Music was pop, mostly retro, and not too loud. I would definitely go back on my next trip to Philly.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
Awesome food and very good margaritas make this high level gormet Central American, Aztec themed restaurant one of my new favorites. The only negative I have is that it's a bit pricey so do not go here if you're looking for cheap Mexican - you will not find it. The atmosphere is romantic and fun at the same time, with a very nice bar on the main floor. It's small so it keeps an intimate feel. Their guacamole was awesome and completely customizable with lots of options. I have one I their new entrees for dinner-- the swordfish-- it was fabulous. I will definitely be back!
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had a great time!
The menu was a good choice of vegetarian, fish and meat but it was really hard deciding because it all sounded so good. Both the waitress and the manager came over, answered questions, and helped us decide on what to order. My only disappointment was happy hour only is for the bar and they don't really have a wine list. They have a small few but all steel barrel aged. They did recommend a few beers and let us try some before we decided and actually, the beer was better with the food than wine would have been anyway. We had a great time and would highly recommend it.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
I've been to Xochitl a couple times and love the guacamole and margaritas. This time when ordering the guacamole we decided to try it with blue cheese, the blue cheese was a bit overwhelming. That's all I could taste. I got the swordfish for my entree, I couldn't decide between the swordfish and the chicken taco's. The waitress talked me into the swordfish. After ordering I quickly regretted my decision, looking around almost every other diner had taco's in front of them. The swordfish was bland.
I would still highly recommend xochitl but next time I would order differently. The guacamole is amazing w/o the blue cheese and is a must if you go here. My fiancé had the brisket and that was also very tasty.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Awesome guacamole.. Tacos where very good as well. We'll definitely be back.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Xochitl is a great restaurant across from head house.

My favorite gem in Philly
My wife and I were looking for a different twist on traditional Mexican and found Xochitl. First off, our server (Adam) was amazing. He not only knew the menu inside and out, but also introduced us to the world of high quality tequila. The food was incredible. You can order the guacamole to your liking.... I recommend black truffle oil and crab meat. The braised short ribs were full of flavor and the sides (sweet corn in particular) were out of this world. I am in Philly every couple of months and this is now my new favorite stop!!!
11/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
Food was great, but too spicy
Food was great, but too spicy for our 10 year old. That's not a criticism, just a warning for those going with children. We all loved the make-your-own guacamole.
