Best Mango Lassi ever!
Heading to NYC for a weekend trip, friends of ours recommended this restaurant. My fiancee had been to the restaurant before and wanted me to experience it myself. We had just arrived in NYC, first rushing to the hotel to check in and then to the restaurant. Going inside, the headaches and stress of "running late" disappeared and we were transported, via the decor, music and general ambiance of Vatan, to a quaint Indian village. Our servers brought out each dish, presenting the various delicious entrees to us and explaining which sauce complimented each item. An excellent restaurant and, as our friends did for us, we will definitely be recommending Vatan to any of our friends who are in NYC! Oh yeah and... Best Mango Lassi ever!

I love the ambience and decor at Vatan. The painted tables and rural touches really add to the atmosphere. The food is authentic, gujerati food and the varity means that everyone finds the perfect bite. The appitizer thali has just the right bite size for trying everything. My favs are the sev puri and muthia. The crunch of the puri with the yogurt and tamarind sauce is addictive and the muthia are pure comfort food. The entree thali is divine, the channa are perfectly spiced, the ful gobi cooked just tender but not mushy and the hot puris are, again, addictive, especially when you dip them in the aam rus(mango pulp). The khichidi rounds the meal off beautifully and then you enjoy the tea and ice cream. Will be back soon with more friends!

Transport to another (tacky) world
Food is delicious and plentiful. Service is prompt and professional.
On the less attractive side, decor goes all the way to tackyville. Huts, trees, waterfalls, dancing Indian beauties... It's all there. Even a wishing well. We had such a great time, though, that we barely noticed. For me, the food was mostly too spicy, but I compensated with triple serving of desserts. All you can eat in the most strangely magical environment -- I'm coming back for sure!

After having a wonderful dinner, I pinched myself because I felt I am in heaven but still alive to enjoy the food next time. We were at Vatan Dec 2010 and promised ourselves " Whenever we will visit NJ/NY , we make sure to have a dinner atleast once at Vatan ." Our hostess Maria was great, being Turkish , pronounce each dinner item perfectly.

Vatan is always very solid food and an awesome Indian experience. Love how quiet, spacious and traditional it is. The service was a bit slower than usual, but a great experience otherwise.

Great food, but it took forever...
I hadn't been to Vatan in several years, but I took some out of town friends for dinner. The food is great, but we waited a long time for out second plate (at least 20 minutes after surrounding tables started eating). We had three kids with us who requested "mild" for the second plate, maybe that threw them off. The server was very friendly and told us that our food was going to be a little late (she didn't offer any explanation, though). It made for a long evening.
It is a great place to bring adventurous kids with healthy appetites who aren't picky eaters. Kids pay full price, but it's better than $20 hamburger and a coke in a crowded drunken bistro. Some may find the ambience too Disney, but they need to get over themselves.

True Gujarati food
Great food and ethnic ambience. One set menu so build an appetite for dinner. Open for dinner only. Great service and ambience.

A lovely way to treat friends
I enjoyed the calmness of the place, the very friendly and informative service. The dishes were delicious, a very rich selection of Gujuratifood as I remembered it, adjusted in spiciness to all tastes. I highly recommmend it for anyone loving Gujurati cuisine or being interested in getting to know it.

Great ambience. I really loved the paintings and the seating area.
The food was great too (the appetizers were better than the main entree)

Awesome Food..Fabulous Ambience
My wife and I went to Vatan last weekend while we were on a 3 day vacation in NYC. We started our evening with dinner at Vatan and it was a great way to start our vacation. The food was excellent. No need to pick and choose. You get to eat pretty much everything starting from appetizers to main course all in small portions...you can ask for more if you want. Just choose what level of spicy you want and let them know of any allergies you may have. The restaurant is only open for dinner. The ambience was particularly unique. Haven't seen such an internal transformation anywhere at Indian restaurants we've eaten before. My wife is very picky eater and rarely impressed but here it was a different story!

a delicious and fascinating
a delicious and fascinating experience. The variety of food was unbelievable. the surroundings are very special and unusual. My only issue... I resent having the tip calculated and mandated for me. Otherwise a fabulous evening experience.

We're planning a huge wedding dinner here soon! Great service...has Indian food for every palate.

Best Gujrati food in NYC!
I have been going to Vatan for the last 13 years and keep going back. Any time I have out of town guests, this is my go to restaurant to impress my guests. The food is always delicious. The service is friendly and they never bother you. You can hang out long after your meal is over. A great place if you love good food and want to have a relaxed meal with friends and actually hear what the other person is saying.

Great good, nice service
Make sure you have an empty stomach before getting here. You'll need it. Dinner is a three course meal comprising more than 20 delicious items, and completely worth the money.
Service is excellent- helped by the pretty girls in pretty outfits :)

The ambience of this restaurant is that of a Rajasthani village. For example, one removes shoes before sitting down to eat. The walls are beige or sand colored with murals of scenes from India/Rajasthan. I went to a similiar recreation of a village in Rajasthan but I did not really enjoy that as much because it felt more like an amusement part, when surrounding us were "real" villages. But here in New York, it felt great, like a mini-connection to India.

Memorable and festive.
I've been to Vatan twice, once ten years ago, once last week - both times, coincidentally, to celebrate friends getting engaged. Perfect each time. Inside, you don't feel like you're in New York. The space is like no other place in the city, tables aren't cramped together, the booth feature these neat pits you put your legs in so you feel like you're sitting on the floor. The food is wonderful and unlike anything else you'll get. Presentation is picture perfect. Staff are super-friendly. We spent two hours in the restaurant, and they didn't mind we were just talking and relaxing after the meal. The next day we kept texting and email each other about our favorite dishes, If you want a special occasion to feel special, this is the place!

Excellent service and clever and transporting ambulance. You need to be a dedicated vegetarian to appreciate the food. All dishes were well-prepared with intricate levels of seasonings and flavors. For devout carnivores the texture and flavor of chicken or meat was missing. Although numerous small plates were served for individual consumption, the sum total and the high prix fixe tab made it feel like there was something lacking.
10/23/2013 5:00:00 PM
I am not a vegetarian but the vegetarian food was surprisingly very good.
Also I am a mild food person and when the first course was described as medium I was a little worried.
However, the food was extremely tasty and not too hot at all.
A very good meal was enjoyed by all.

Amazing vegetarian Indian food
My family and I recently went to Vatan for the first time. The restaurant was lovely and quiet and we were asked to remove our shoes before being seated at a low table. We each received a large platter of numerous delicious vegetarian appetizers, all graciously explained by our waitress, followed by individual large platters of entrees and bread. There was a small amount of each item but one is invited to ask for more of anything. In total, there was so much food that none of us could imagine asking for more! At dessert time, our waitress had picked up on the fact that it was my step-daughter's birthday and brought a candle in the delicious mango ice cream. All in all, a wonderful evening. We'll be back.

Perfect Evening Dinner.
Great service and great food. In fact, impressed with the amount of food served on a Saturday evening. A definite recommendation for all my friends.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
The price fixe makes this place very easy for groups. Each course is brought out as many samples on a tray for each person. The waitstaff is wonderful and it feels like a real treat. The chai tea is terrific. Although it's all you can eat and you can order more of something you like, I have never done it. In fact it's way too much food but it's fun to try so many things. This is more about the experience than the food. Though you won't be disappointed or hungry.

More than satisfied
Only go when you are very hungry. The food was very good but there is a lot of it. Felt guilty sending it back to the kitchen but could not finish it.
