Food great - lovely service - wonderful experience.

If you have not tried this restaurant - you must! We had the 9 course tasting menu - it was the best meal we have ever had; all wait staff were excellent and attentive, timing between courses was spot on, flavors were delicious, presentation was artful & inventive! Can not say enough how wonderful the evening was!

Delighted taste buds!
Aldea is all about flavor, although it can do a great job on texture and color as well. George Mendes is really brilliant. The place looks quite modest, but its culinary aspirations as anything but. Our only concern was a very high noise level. Everything I ate was delicious, the salad for heaven's sake, the suckling pig corralled into a little rectangle, and the "little dreams," I guess their version of beignets with three different sauces, Others in our party of six had great scallops, great lamb, etc.

chef's table is the place to sit
after getting to nyc on a 6 hr bus trip in traffic we headed straight to aldea and what a treat. The people were friendly, the staff knowledgeable, accommodating with food allergies, and the food was fabulous. We sat at the chef's table and watched them prepare several meals with expertise precision. I started with 3 oysters followed by the red snapper and then fritti served with 3 dipping sauces. My daughter enjoyed the scallops. The portions were large, delicious, and up to the Michelin rating displayed on the wall.

It was a good restaurant but
It was a good restaurant but too expensive for its quality food

Phenomenal food, great service.
Phenomenal food, great service. I will definitely return, and try to sit at the Chef's table next time. The decor is too minimalist to make it romantic, and it's too bright downstairs, at least early on in the evening.

It is my 8 time going to Aldea
It is my 8 time going to Aldea in about 4 years and it continues to serve me well. Their food is still great and the service is impeccable. The noise level is between moderate and quiet but I went on a Monday night.

Great good and service!
Our first time in this restaurant . I was impressed with food and service.
Just I have to write this : the host (Asian girl) wasn't nice . Bc I requested to be seated in the booth and she denited give it to us..And I thought its reserved but all evening during our dinner nobody even came for those seats.the booth was empty all evening! Very dissapointed with unfriendly host!
Even food was good but won't be back there!
8/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Stunning, as always
This was my second visit to Aldea; I chose it specifically as the one place I had to visit while I was visiting friends in NYC that I hadn't seen for a year. Spring for the tasting menu if you can afford it--otherwise the choices on the a la carte menu are fantastic.

Another great meal at Aldea
My wife and I eat at Aldea at least once a month for about 3 years now and have always left very happy with the dining experience. Michelin Star Chef Mendes mixture of flavors, the cordial atmosphere, the staff from hostess to server to busperson are all wonderful. Obviously, we have already reserved our table for next month and cant wait to go back!!!A not-to-miss fine restaurant.

My Ode to the Suckling Pig
If I were to eat just one meal for the rest of my life, I would pick Aldea's Suckling Pig (or Scarpetta's Tomato Basil Spaghetti). The pork was just perfectly tender and juicy and sweet. I thought it was genius to pair it with the cauliflower and carrot pickle, which just heightened the sweetness of the pork ever that much. There's no reason to order any other entree honestly unless you've had the pork before.
I gave the service here three stars because our server seemed curt and disinterested and the hostess originally tried to seat us at the chef's bar when perhaps half of the restaurant was empty. After some time did they offered us a table next to the most rambunctious business suits I've ever had the displeasure of sitting next to.

I enjoyed an amazing meal that was exciting and fun to share. We enjoyed the tasting menu which was served at a relaxing pace, giving us time to enjoy the symphony of flavors before us. Each dish was prepared and presented with care. The combinations of flavors were subtly combined, and each were a surprise. The meal was, however, a little more expensive that I was expecting.
9/5/2013 5:00:00 PM
I didn't know what to expect of this restaurant when I made a reservation. I was skeptical about this place because I was able to make a last min Saturday night reservation while most other restaurants I wanted to go didn't have any availability at all. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the service was great and the food was delicious. We've tried their scallops and duck dishes. I fund them very tasty and unique. The portions are on the smaller side though. The atmosphere was very pleasant too. We didn't order desserts as they looked awfully small :). Overall, we had a good experience.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Aldea has been on my list for some time. We finally went last night and had the tasting menu - it was quite a treat. Most of the dishes were very good, but there were a few standouts such as the fresh sardines, the scallop with fresh corn and the suckling pig with clams (yes, clams). The service was good and friendly - and the space is also very pleasant. Overall the tone of the place is stylish but not pretentious.
Definitely a repeat performance is in order.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was masterfully prepared, and the presentations were beyond excellent. We sat at the chef's table and watched them prepare the meals in front of us, I've never seen chefs care so much about the food they're preparing.
I'll definitely be returning to sample more of the food on my next visit!

A Wonderful Surprise
Our experience at Aldea was exceptional. The food was outstanding and EVEN the vegtables were the best we had eaten in a long time. While limited, each of the $25 lunch selections were well-prepared and excellent. The meal was only enhanced by the excellent attentive, but not overbearing service. It was truly a memorable experience.

I was looking for a place that is romantic and quiet for me and my boyfriend to have a dinner.
Aldea is perfect place to go for a couple or even a group! Food is delicious and the service was great too!
Prices are $$$ but ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT :D
Also, I happened to mention my boyfriend's birthday unintentionally.. and our waiter served our dessert with "happy birthday" !! My boyfriend and I were thrilled and had remarkable experience at Aldea! CERTAINLY WE WILL GO AGAIN!!
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had an exceptional experience
We had an exceptional experience at Aldea. We ordered the 9 course tasting menu--standout courses were the scallop with mango salad, the lobster stew, and the pork and clams. Our server was very knowledgeable and kind--attentive without interrupting. We celebrated our anniversary and Chef Mendes came out at the end of the meal to congratulate us--an extra special touch.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
We found this restaurant in the Michelin Guide 2013 and it was as good as promised.
Excellent quality, wonderful tastes. For me, being a celiac, they advised what would be glutenfree. The winelist was interesting and had several possibilities for ordering just a glass.
We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and can recommend it!
There was only one minor flaw: we had a reservation but had to wait half an hour for our table.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
a wonderful experience
The food was creative, service gracious and the whole ambience outstanding

Another great dinner at Aldea
This time my wife and I took our doctor and his wife to Aldea for a gourmet dinner. All of us delighted in the wonderful preparations of Chef Mendes, the very helpful and professional service, and the generally cordial atmosphere provided by the manager and hostess. We will certainly be back very soon and are eager to have another wonderful dining experience.

We celebrated a birthday at
We celebrated a birthday at Aldea and were very well looked after. Everything we ordered was well presented and tasted great. The service was very good and we had a great table near the kitchen.

A smooth Brazilian menu
The food obviously has a strong Portuguese / Spanish feel. The tasting menu was 9 courses, named the "chefs Brazilian menu". Started with a selection of appetizers, then a series of seafood and fish dishes. The only meat dish was piece of crispy suckling pork.
All delicious. We then had a small cheese course , pre dessert and a dessert to die for- a warm chocolate blueberry clafoutis. The wine matches were imaginative served with enthusiasm and knowledge. Overall an outstanding experience.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
From start till the end - wonderful dinner with our friends! We shared 4 apps for a table - bacalao fritters, fois gras, octopus, sea bass crudo and smoky shrimp - fois was everyone's fave, but each and every app was a statement on its own. Great palate, well balanced and simply mouthwatering delicases. For entrees we tried cod, lamb, suckling pig and hanger steak - again, our plates left the tables squicky clean, as we enjoyed every bite and got share and try everything! We were seated by the kitchen and had a pleasure of watching the kitchen master the food! Absolutely and strongly recommended if you take your food seriously to do the tasting menu - that what we collectively decided to do on our next trip there soon!
10/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Upon arrival I was immediately seated and the hostess took into consideration my request for a quiet table. The service was respectful and attentive during the lunch (I was having a business meeting) and the timing of each course was perfect. I had the terrine, skate wing fish and chocolate mousse accompanied with a house made ginger beer. The flavors were balanced and the portions satisfying. I am a fan and will always try to find a way back here.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
very beautiful and delicious
very beautiful and delicious food! the cocktail menu is creative and the drinks are great. we will definitely go back.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
The restaurant is really deserving of their Michelin award! Everything we tried was delicious but Arroz de Pato was my favorite of all! A must try!
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Went after the Michelin list came out. Seated in a table for 4, 1/2 booth w/2 chairs within the open kitchen view. Surprisingly QUIET all throughout, nice ambience without being stuffy. Had my back to the kitchen, wish there was a mirror so I could see the show behind me. Service was exemplary, just enough without being in your face. Although we asked for recommendations, the dish descriptions did not match the dish. The foie was like VELVET in my mouth, the octopus so tender, it MELTED. Suckling pick excellent but the garnish on the plate, was miss. Only let down was the signature duck paella. Duck 3 ways, but NO MENTION of SMOKED! This dish is one note of overwhelming smokiness. Donuts for dessert were perfect. YUM!
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
My son recommended this restaurant and although we eat out quite frequently, we found Aldea to be very unique. The food was scrumptious, the service was impeccable and the place is beautiful too. I would easily give this place 5 stars.

Delectable Gem of NYC
Aldea is an intimate restaurant with outstanding food and impeccable service. Chef George Mendes and his staff prepare fresh dishes which are delicious as well as creative. You feast with your eyes, then with your nose as the aromas hit, and finally the wonderful taste of the food. The flavors are in layers and dance across your palate. The wines paired with the foods enhance your dining experience. If you are a real foodie there are several table as well as a counter that face the open kitchen where you can watch Chef George and his staff meticulously preparing the delectable food. It is one of our very favorite places to dine In New York. Hats off to Chef George and all his staff for always making our dining experience unforgettable.

Fantastic for a Special Occasion
The staff was great: accommodating a slight delay in our reservation, starting us off with complimentary cava, and calling our our anniversary throughout our tasting menu meal. The food is delicious, creative and varied with dynamic influences ranging far beyond their stated Portuguese. Highly recommended.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
This chef makes interesting food using some unusual pairings.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Two couples went for diner and ordered the tasting menu for the table. We were all very positively surprised by the excellent quality of the food. The place is nicely set, and the service was very good, but the food was outstanding. Practically all the item that arrived at the table were at a point of perfection in appearance and flavor. Only one dish lacked the appropriate finish (somebody in the kitchen seems to have forgotten the salt and pepper!!), which is a rather good performance.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Started with a dozen of the fresh oysters. Excellent pickled scallion sauce to go with the oysters. Foie gras terrine was silky smooth and oh so good! Not a hint of 'duck/goose' funk to it. Sardines was not on the lunch menu but I asked if i could have it and they accommodated. Serrano was fresh, melt-in-your-mouth goodness.
I liked the seared calamari - did not care for the napa cabbage pickle - it had piri-piri sauce but tasted too much like kimchee. I wanted to have a more 'pure' Iberian flavor. With the calamari being fresh, I would have preferred a good olive oil, sprinkle of sea salt & capers over the 'kim-chee'.
Chef Mendes has a way of highlighting the main ingredients in all his dishes. Great price point.

Another wonderful dinner at Aldea..
My wife and I went for our monthly dining event at Aldea and it did not disappoint. The food was delicious, as always, with a wonderous mixture of flavors, the Assistant Manager Maya was her usual very cordial self, the service including Casey and Miguel were very attentive and helpful, and the whole dining experience was just great. Can't wait to come back.
10/18/2013 5:00:00 PM
Still very good.
We went here several times shortly after it opened and it was very good then. It is as good or better now. The arroz con paro and squash soup were excellent.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
A quest for something different in this neighborhood led us to take a chance on Aldea. The result was a superb lunch, an attentive staff and a very relaxed enjoyable luncheon experience.
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Different and superb
A wonderful taste of Portugal exquisitely prepared and beautifully served, yet not fussy or self-conscious. It's about the food, which is wonderful.
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very different- tasty , delicious. Great drink menu. Would definitely go back for other seasonal offerings
10/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Aldea was solid. Not exceptional/memorable but if you are looking for a good meal + cocktails, you can't go wrong at Aldea.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Service is outstanding!
We went to support our dear friend Jamie Schicht , a professional server with outstanding knowledge of food and wine. Of course, she did not disappoint. She recommended awesome choices of entrees and wine. Service was impeccable. Food was so flavorful especially the complimentary mini tastings. Really showed off chef's talent . Looking forward to visiting again!
Thanks for a wonderful culinary experience.

What a great evening! This cozy flatiron resto offered great food and service, while allowing diners to sneak a peak of its pristine kitchen and the chefs in action

Happy I went
George Mendes did a dinner in Charleston that I attended so when I went to NYC,I was excited to try his restaurant out. The place is gorgeous. Small but very pretty and modern. The service was awesome, although we were checked on so much we kind of felt rushed. They sent out an amuse which was great. The oysters were amazing. The shrimp app was great as well. I had the Cod for dinner and it was just blah. Cod in general is a bland fish and the set just didn't do anything for this fish to make it a great dish. My friends had the Steak which was very undercooked but they didn't want to send it back. the desserts were good but interesting. Our server got slammed at the end and it was hard to get a check. Overall, it was a good experience.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Everything about our meal was perfect. the duck breast was tender, flavorful and cooked to perfection. And the service was superb.

Fine Dining With a Heart
We had dinner on 11/18 when Aldea decided to donate 100% of the day's revenue to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Phiippines. The food is excellent and more importantly, the gesture is commendable. We'll definitely come back.

Great lunch at Aldea
This was the first time I had lunch at Aldea. I took two friends with me. We all were wonderfully satisfied. The food was excellent, the service very cordial, as was the hostess and manager. We left raving about the lunchtime dining experience.
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
My Guilty Pleasure
Aldea is my guilty pleasure. I love the way that the dishes are prepared and the flavors are always balanced. Lunch is a great time to try out the menu especially since they have a $25 prix fixe menu!
Always a pleasure to go there!
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
Our fourth visit to Aldea fulfilled expectations entirely. The Marcona almonds and olive appetizer was abundant. Shrimp alinho were perfectly prepared with unusual spices. Arroz pato had tender duck slices and a complex and surprising risotto underneath. Diver scallops cooked a point. Flavors in ice cream and sorbets were intense and exceptional.

An extraordinary evening
The tasing menu at Aldea the night after Thanksgiving has become a tradition for me and a friend from out of town. And each year exceeds the last. A beautifully conducted symphony of flavors and textures, simple themes and complex variations ... It's a culinary adventure. Relax. You're in inspired hands.

Continuing our tradition
I first found Aldea because it was convenient to the office of my guest, for his birthday lunch. He is now several years older and we go there every year, and in-between. A really good experience and meal always. And the lunch special is the best deal in town! Excellent food at a very fair price.
