Perfect in Every Way !
The new Spring menu at Alloro is outstanding. Very inventive, intriguing (makes it hard to decide)and there is something for everyone. We had a picky eater in our group and he had difficulty deciding on his entree. The service team at Alloro is exceptional as well. They work seamlessly together, are very welcoming and client focused, and are very attentive. Alloro is one of those restaurants that works no matter what - celebration, quiet intimate meal, looking for a special food experience, etc. Our favorite reason to be on the UES (up from Chelsea) is Alloro. Excellent !!!

Wonderful neighbourhood gem
Superb food in a quiet assuming neighbourhood setting. Wonderful service too, warm, knowledgeable and unpretentious. For those who can't stand the preening cacophony of so many UES Italians, you will cherish this find!

Don't dine here if you want
Don't dine here if you want the same old Italian cuisine. Love the chef creativity, Italian with panache!

A real gem
What a find, has been around the corner but unaware of it.. Just superb
5/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Inviting and unpretentious, Alloro is a culinary gem hidden in a seemingly ordinary guise. It was really lovely to gaze out at the street on a sunny day, with trees embanking the couple of outside tables.Food is beyond expectation. The chef mixes flavors together in magical ways. Presentation is precious as well. The salads were huge, the entrees small, but that's best anyway. Probably because it was Mothers' Day, it didn't rate 5 stars, since the service was inconsistent. However, speaking for each of us at the table, we will definitely come again.
5/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
Alloro has a unique take on Italian food. Often 'unique' can mean weird and disappointing but in this case it's a compliment. Very refined and thoughtful flavor combinations make it a special place that should be better known.
5/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
I wish I could rate Alloro at Excellent (or 4 1/2 ) stars as, while maybe not quite outstanding, it's better than very good. Had the traditional/revisited eggplant parmegian appetizer and veal ragu w/fettuccine entree--both excellent. Have been to Alloro 3 times in past year and it's very consistent. Service also was excellent.

UES Great Italian
Outstanding food and service. Server and chef were welcoming to adjusting items to meet dietary requirements. Food was delicious and service was top-notch.

Great for those who aren't able to have gulten. They are knowledgeable and well trained in dinning and food. They go out of their way to accommodate your needs.

Second time that we have eaten at Alloro. Both times very good food.

allora, Alloro was a big surprise!
Here's an Italian chef who is creating different and delicious Italian food with a twist. The red sauce was delicious. I had an the 3.5" round of eggplant parmigiana with red sauce spread on top and over the sides; on the same place was a slight mousse of goat, maybe burrata (?) cheese , looking solid, but not, and next to that a small "cigarro" of eggplant puree dipped in nuts(?) and fried, which you dip in the mousse. Yum. Everyone else seemed to order that, too. I licked my plate.
I also had the black mushroom risotto...outstanding. My husband had the delicious and colorful tomato salad with fruits various, melons, et. al. and a simple spaghetti with spices and oil. We will definitely put Alloro on our NY list for our next visit!

What a Gem!!
This is a fantastic neighborhood gem. Very intimate and the owners/chef are warm and friendly and make you feel like family the moment you walk in. But the star of the restaurant is the food. Very inventive Italian food that takes the traditional recipes and put a surprising spin on them. But not such a spin that you don't recognize the meal. And the taste is outstanding.
Menu changes seasonally and they have a great list of seasonal cocktails as well.
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Let me get right to the point: this is one of the best restaurants in NY. The food completely engages both your palate and your mind.
We had the Parmesan cheese five ways-an astonishingly creative and delicious array. Also the Salvatore salad, impishly described as containing "20, 30 or 40" ingredients. Fabulous!
Linguine with arugula pesto, candied lemon zest, mascarpone and bruschetta sauce was revelatory. Spaghetti with calamari, topped with sea urchin was a subtle extravaganza of seafood flavor.
Wait staff are among the best we've seen--warm without being intrusive, trading off seamlessly as needed. We also enjoyed the decor and the music.
We can hardly wait to come back!

Every dish a winner
Although this was our first time at Alloro, we can't wait to return. There were four of us for dinner and each ordered a different appetizer, main course and dessert, so we had a pretty good variety. Each and every dish was outstanding. The service was friendly and professional.
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have never written a review before, but just returned from dinner at Alloro and felt obligated.
The food was as good as the presentation.
The service was was outstanding.
We had the 4 course tasting menu, but decided that when we go back we will try ordering ff the menu.
The table next to us ordered various dishes which they all tried and seemed happy with everything.
Small intimated and wonderful food and service.

I read such great reviews
I read such great reviews about this italian restaurant uptown and I was feeling like walking to dinner. My waitress was a bit.. blah.. almost like she didn't want to be there but was trying to put a smile on. the table was a little cramped... but its a cute atmosphere. Definitely recommend the eggplant parm app, its amazing. the cheese four ways.. decent, but it needs jam or crackers or something? The filet was AWESOME, cooked medium rare just the way I like it and the salmon was good, not great. Tiramisu, which is one of my fav desserts was, "different", but the coffee gelato made the dish. I'll be honest.. i wouldn't go here if you want traditional italian or really italian at all (unless you get pasta), more nouveau american

I live only a few blocks away and never knew about this great restaurant. The food was outstanding and the service was great too.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very nice welcome, we were first sitting outside, then we moved inside the restaurant because it started to rain. The waiters were very helpful, gave good recommendations. All the staff is very friendly and attentive. Nice athmosphere in the restaurant, felt at home. The food was outstanding - all three courses were just excellent and exceed our expectations. For sure we will come back soon.

my new favorite neighborhood place
my friend and I had dinner at Alloro's during restaurant week, and will be sure to return again and again. The atmosphere is very reminiscent of restaurants I've dined in while in Italy - quaint and simple, with subtle Italian touches. The menu was extremely creative and the food was extraordinary. The waitstaff were friendly and the overall experience was very satisfying and pleasant.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I brought our daughter and her finacee to Alloro to give them an engagement gift. The wait staff is very friendly and accomodating. The menu is not your typical meatball and ravoli. It is trully fine dinning. We enjoyed one of the best dinning experiences any where. The owners Salvatore and Gina are very friendly. We have a new favorite restaurant.

A satisfying Restaurant Week experi
Met our criterion for a satisfying Restaurant Week experience, introducing us to a new place with new flavors, something not easy to do in most Italian restaurants. But this one definitely met the goal of creating delicious and creatively prepared dishes using the best aspects of Italian cuisine and taking them to a new level. Service, including from the chef himself, was attentive and friendly but not overly formal. Not the place to go, though, if your looking for Mama Leone's-type family size servings.

Restaurant Week dinner
I liked everything a lot, but I think the portions were a bit small. I was still hungry when I left.
8/3/2013 5:00:00 PM
They know how to do a filet mignon. Soft as butter!

Private dining room
Alloro was recommended by a colleague and he was right. The food is delicious, the chef/owner personable and personal and bringing friends to this new place was a delight!. It feels as if you are dining in a private home and if your expectations are high, you will not be disappointed. Service is great.

Delightful Food but unsure of staff
I started with the seasonal salad and it was delightful. The pasta was also very good. The one thing that was odd was that we ordered Prosecco and were brought champagne. The bar tender argued that it was the same thing. I am a huge fan of Prosecco and it is NOT the same thing. I would have hoped for better customer service as the bar, even if you truly believe it is the same thing, it is never right to argue with a customer and not offer them something else. Our waiter was very attentive. I would go back but will order wine the next time.

Dined at Alloro for NYC Restaurant
Dined at Alloro for NYC Restaurant Week. Food was very good and service was even better. Servers were very attentive and each course was delivered timely. Will definitely return.
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not a meatball in sight. Superb Italian fare at a price - lucky to have gone for NYC restaurant week as super pricey but the cocktails are good, the food superb (desert was light - not as rich as one would expect or hope but with richness of the main courses meant one finished satisfied not overwhelmed. Delightful service and tables outside meant we could enjoy the evening sun.

Upper East side surprise
Superb seasonal Italian menu with very attentive service.

tight but nice
restaurant is a little tight and backroom is small.....cozy for a winter night!

I am Italian and NEVER go to an Italian restaurant unless I am in NYC. The title sums it up. Best eggplant I have ever had. Go....you won't be disappointed.

Superb, inventive Italian cuisine; wonderful service; unusual list of terrific Italian wines and quiet enough to actually speak to your dinner companions..........and all at a very fair price.

Abbiamo cenato in quattro, esperienza culinaria notevole. Grande creatività del cuoco e ottima presentazione delle portate. Un buon rapporto qualità prezzo (esclusi i vini) , in Italia, un locale equivalente potrebbe avere un conto più salato.

Delicious and Interesting
Alloro is a great place with Chef Salvatore putting out lovely but slightly unusual food. Suspend your disbelief as you read the ingredient list for each menu item; there always seems to be one that looks wildly out of place. Yet they work every time. Gelato in the risotto? Tastes great. Orange in your pea soup? Fantastic!
We passed Alloro hundreds of times before we tried it and wish we had done so months ago. Gina and the staff make dinner at Alloro a unique and wonderful experience.

Interesting take on Italian
Interesting take on Italian food, some works some not. The polpettine and the tempura shrimp are winners, gorgonzola crème brulee a little farfetched for my taste.
All in all a pleasant experience, good professional service, nice wine list.
9/24/2013 5:00:00 PM
Best Italian food ever!!!
The chef sal designs and cooks each dish as a work of art. He helps to pair an extensive wine list with each dish. The chef tasting menu allows a foodie to taste a bunch of different dishes delicately prepared.
Go there. You will not be disappoint!!!!
Thanks Sal and Gina

Went to dinner on a Saturday and everyone had a great meal. Eggplant appetizer was fantastic. Prices were a little on the high side, but the food was excellent so no complaints. Wonderful wine recommendations too. Good spot for fine neighborhood dining.

Old Friends New Places
Made plans to dine at Alloro with friends and had a great evening all around. The restaurant was quaint with great service and food. We were met at the door by a friendly staff eager to see us to our table. Our waitress was enthusiastic throughout the service and provided good insight on the menu and our food and beverage selections.
The pace of the meal was pleasant allowing us to enjoy both the food and conversation. We ended up sharing appetizers and entrees as the favors were exceptional. Favorites included the Parmigiana and the Insalata di Salvatore for appetizers and the Gnocchi and Dentice for the main course. All the desserts we good but the Cioccolato was tops.
I look forward to my next visit and recommend Alloro.

Great night for group of 'Foodie's'
It was left to me as the local New Yorker to find a restaurant to celebrate the 50th Birthdays of two out-of-town foodie friends. Alloro did not disappoint . Food was interesting and delicious. Service was very attentive. The wine list had some Italian gems that made us all happy. It will become a regular haunt for us from now on.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
how did i not know about this place
what a fabulous meal. All 4 of us had only 1 rare comment-We will come back. Dinner was inventive and delicious. I have no choice but to come back. I didn't have dessert-I was so full from my salad and chestnut fettuccini.

I go out of my way
I stumbled on this restaurant several years ago when I was attending a meeting on the upper east side. It is a small but not cramped space. The service was attentive but not intrusive. There was no sense of pressure so the table could be turned over. The food…. I have now been there three times over these 3 years and have not been disappointed. The food is classic italian but innovative. For example I had risotto. It was creamy and andante. As an unexpected twist, expresso beans were crushed over the risotto. Have Salvatore's salad. It changes with the season but is always great.
12/1/2013 4:00:00 PM
Everything was fantastic. The appetizer veal meatballs are not to be missed. Everything is fresh and unique. Affordable wine list, great service, very warm and comfortable. Would definitely go back.

Everyone else already knows about Allora but it was a great find for us. From the first word to the last bite everything was great - fine, personal service and wonderful food (salmon for me, pork chop for him and 4 chocolates). Clearly a group of people who put their hearts into the restaurant. We will be back soon.
