Fantastic food. Great margaritas. Friendly service. The location itself is nothing special - in a bank bldg in an area of downtown that is not especially scenic - but the restaurant is worth the trip.

Love the Guacamole!!!
Believe it or not, I'm a fanatic about the amazing guacamole. Second only to the guacamole, I love the Citrus Chicken Quesadia. I enjoy those two dishes so much that I look for every opportunity to treat people to lunch -- there! While I've enjoyed a few of the other offerings, I always return to my two loves.

Food bursting with flavor
With food this wonderful, why do there need to be conversation-inhibiting sound levels? My best friend of many years and I are miles apart (Long Beach and Ventura County) and we meet in LA so we can enjoy the great food at Border Grill, and then we end up feeling like we're at a noisy cocktail party. Our server was apologetic and the food was, as always, superb. The ball's in Border Grill's court!

Something for everyone even the little ones
Our reservation was at 2:00pm

Fun Lunch Hour
A very nice get away for a real lunch break. Wonderful variety of food whether you're super hungry or not. I love the tortilla chips which are addictive.

Border Grill is a winner!
A delicious take on Mexican classics, and excellent drinks. Queso fundido, quinoa fritters, vegetable chilaquiles, and cucumber/jalapeno margaritas - all terrific! The chipotle salsa was a smoky delight as well.

Sunday Price-Fix a great deal.
For $25, unlimited ordering from a special Tapas style menu. All the items we ordered were very good!
6/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great Service! Great small plates/tapas style meal. Went on a Sunday when they do the $25 unlimited plates and 5$ margaritas. We were stuffed and had 3 drinks each and it was under 100$ for a great quality meal. Only thing I'd say is if you're looking for more of a "scene" this downtown location was very quiet and closes at 9 so it may not be the best party spot. Looked more like a business lunch/after work drinks kind of place for the downtown crowd. Still the food was awesome. Tamales were amazing. Empanadas to die for. Shrimp and grits was phenomenal. Hubby loved the pork shoulder. Churros for dessert were the bomb. Everything was truly great. Those were just the stand outs.

Good downtown spot
Brought a group here to eat after a long convention day. Our server did a great job attending to us. Enjoyed the food.

This was our first time at Border Grill and the experience was great. Really enjoyed the food, service, and outdoor patio. We were nestled among the high rise buildings of downtown LA. (very interesting). A great place to dine before going to the Disney Hall.
One other outstanding feature was the shuttle to the Disney from the restaurant and back. Did not have to move the car. No doubt saved a couple of bucks to boot.
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lots of diffferent food combinations for interesting flavors. Good selection in menu. Good and prompt service in time to catch the shuttle for the Music Center (a definite plus).
6/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Border Grill is a great place to meet with colleagues and celebrate the beginning of retirement. The drinks and food were excellent and for such a busy place to get constant attention is amazing. We will be back for more celebrations!
6/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
awesome food and great service
Border Grill never disappoints. Food is creative and spot- on. Servers are helpful, pleasant and know the menu.

Love Border Grill
The food at Border Grill is tasty. All personnel are friendly, welcoming and fun! My favorite place for lunch.

Fabulous food..an amazing martini, best guacamole...only downside on a Saturday night it is not in a great location in downtown LA...will go to Santa Monica next time

I thought the food was delicious.

Small plate Sundays a big deal
Tapas only menu Sunday...a great deal and great choices. Our waiter was sweet and our server soooo friendly. Would definitely come back again to try regular menu.

Relaxing, yummy outdoor dining
Nice spot for patio dining on a summer evening, surrounded by
a glittery high-rise vista, secluded from the street behind a
cozy, flower-topped wall. Heaters kept it very comfortable
on a breezy night.
Staff was very attentive and with a neatly unobtrusive presence.

A place that pays attention to details.

The Grand Dame of LA Mexican
Even after so many years, the food's still great here. Classically-trained chefs turning out traditional Mexican dishes, gracious and accommodating service, and a thunderous open concrete room. My barbocoa was a particularly good version (although less traditional than most of what's on the menu). Particularly accommodating for gluten-free diners.
I do wish my drink was better - I had a cucumber-jalapeno margarita that just wasn't really up to snuff (especially at Varnish prices).
Still, it can be easy to overlook Border Grill in favor of newer restaurants, and I think that'd be a mistake.

Sunday small plates menu is a great way to sample the regular menu. Great ceviche and fish taco.

Sunday tasters paradise
Sundays is a set price per person, with a host of tasting portions of about 20 different dishes.........and you can order as many as you can try or eat or try again! OMG! Everything is fresh and sourced kcal where possible. And it all is excellent.....musts are the ceviche tostada, the taquitos, and the carne taco. We were very pleased with everything, highly recommended.

Heading to a concert at the Greek
We were looking for a fun place before going to the Greek for a concert. The Border Grill was perfect. They have a special on Sundays where for $25 dollars you get as many small main dishes as you want to try. A great way to sample their entire menu. I really love the different sauces and favors.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Meal with Fantastic Service
Border Grill has a great menu for people looking for authentic Mexican. Even with a very quiet dining room on a Monday evening, service was outstanding. While not a real negative, the portion sizes are large, so be warned that you may have to take home a "food souvenir" of your trip there.
7/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
I was plesantly surprised. I truly enjoyed the food and would go there again. Loved your chips and salsa. I would go there for happy hour just to sit at the bar.

Great Downtown Dining!
We had an extremely enjoyable lunch at Border Grill - - the server was super friendly and full of suggestions, the chef/owner stopped by our table to chat and every bite of the food was delicious. Plantain empanadas and the queso fundido were both uniquely flavored and equally delicious. Our favorte entree was the brisket taquitos although both the Baby Back Tacos and the Chicken Enchiladas were both also delicatedly flavored and used the top ingredients. Drinks were interesting (Blood Orange Margarita) and strong and the perfect dessert were the churros, recommended by our server, just enough to share. We can't wait to go back.

The service is superb - friendly
The service is superb - friendly and efficient - and the menu offers a nice variety of delicious selections. Lunch service is especially efficient and the atmosphere is energetic.

Great food, a little pricy
But, hey, it's downtown LA - good food tends to be pricy. The restaurant has three distinct sections: the dining room, the bar area and the patio. You pretty much can find an ambience to suit your mood. All our meals were well-seasoned and flavorful though portions were small ... with complimentary chips and a variety of salsas you don't leave hungry. Tortillas were fresh and some of the best I've encountered in a restaurant. Wait staff was friendly though may have been over-stretched. Temperature of the food and hard finish on the blackbeans tells me the plates were sitting for awhile before being served. Busboy was top-notch - very attentive and never an empty water glass. We will definitely be back!
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
I like that the restaurant
I like that the restaurant called me to confirm the reservation and asked if this was a special occassion, two Birthdays! When we arrived the table was set with the menus, the service was excellent, the food yummy and filling, and two surprise desserts.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Casual atmosphere, delicious food
Roasted chicken poblano enchiladas were the best I've had! My husband loved ceviche and pork belly tacos.

Vegetarians Will Love It!
Amazing vegetarian food; I couldn't try everything in one visit, so I can't wait to go back! Plenty for carnivores, too, but many chefs forget about the vegetarian guest, but not Border Grill. Everything was delicious. My husband loved his meat dish and I couldn't get enough of my vegetarian meal. Looking forward to returning.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
We love/liked it
Pretty good overall, particularly for a Sunday evening when the offer a $25 tapas menu that is also an all-you-can-eat offer. The flavors were bright, creative and unique. The wild mushroom quesadilla, fish taco, briskett taquillo and mexican fried chicken sandwich were all distinctive and memorable without being too salty or garlicky. Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive and never far. Value was particularly good given the menu we ordered from. The decor is looking a bit tired, but it probably does better on a Saturday night when the music is playing and there's a full-on crowd. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed as it lives up to its celebrity chef status.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went for the Sunday evening
We went for the Sunday evening special: all-you-can-eat tapas for $25 per person. Those "small plates" can be quite filling when you can have as many as you want...and we tried everything including dessert! Great food at a bargain price.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
the cantina section is a good
the cantina section is a good spot for a big group. you can enjoy the food and the company without "disturbing" the other restaurant patrons (and vice versa).
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Pleasantry from the time you walk through the door. I always enjoy a great lunch and birthday celebrations there! The waiter recommended great dishes. We enjoyed the dips and refreshing drinks. My company has booked our holiday lunch there for the past two years, everyone loves it! I hope we go back this year, too. Thanks!
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
very good mexican food, bit loud
enjoyed the food; was very disappointed that their shuttle service to the Ahmanson, which is advertised on their website, had been cancelled 2 months ago (July 2013), and they did not bother to update their website. We had to take a cab. But, service was great, and management was apologetic.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
My husband and I rarely get to a good restaurant, so it's critcal that when we go the experience is excellent. This was our first time trying the prix fixe menu, and it was well worth the $34 price. The (fixed) appetizer is a tasty mini-tamale with a sweet potato fritter. Our entrees were terrific. My husband had the spicy shrimp with rice, I had the Pescado (fish) Veracruz -- a fish and rice stew tangy with tomatoes and olives, a little kale and some complex spicy/citrusy tang. The dessert was to die for. Chocolate tart with a decadent caramel interior and salted peanut ice cream. And I always get the minty lime cooler, my favorite non-alcoholic drink of all time. The service was very attentive, the decor entertaining. Love it!

Yum Yum Yum
This was my second time dining here, and it was even better than I remembered. My margarita was strong yet incredibly smooth and refreshing. We ordered the table guacamole, which was irresistible, along with the trio of salsas that came complimentary. Before we knew it we had finished two bowls of chips, and our entrees had not even arrived. I ordered the nachos, and they were amazing. Probably too small to share between two people for an entree, but definitely more than enough for one. I came hungry to this dinner, but I only managed to make it through half of them. Despite being stuffed, I found myself still munching on them. I highly highly recommend these as an appetizer to share. I wish I had enough room to try the churros, next time!

Border Grill Downtown
Great place to grab a drink and a savory meal before a show. Service was prompt and the food was so tasty. You are away from the crunch of people in LA Live which makes the views of the Bonaventure from the patio all the more serene, but just a few blocks from your next destination. Was the perfect choice for a meal before my concert at the Orpheum Saturday night.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Happy Hour
I went with five other friends out for a birthday dinner. Our goal was to get out of there on a moderately cheap dime and have at least one drink. The service was great, the "bites" on the happy hour menu were plenty filling, and it was so cheap and delicious. I will definitely be going back for happy hour!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
I brought a group of leaders here from a fortune 500 company and they were delighted with the choice. We have all been talking about the food throughout our conference we are attending at the Westin, dreaming about our meal together. I would recommend this restaurant to ANYONE and EVERYONE.
10/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Mexican on steroids! Well seasoned nachos and carnitas. We will return.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
good food friendly service
Just what you want in a restaurant--good food choices friendly staff and a free shuttle to the concert hall all in one.

A fine, fun place pre-theater
MY 16 year old daughter and I shared a downtown late-afternoon prior to the theater, finishing up at Border Grill. The service was fine, the food excellent--she loved her Quesadilla and I, my pulled pork. The outdoor seating was comfortable, quiet enough to hear one another (I have hearing aids), and the view of street life was fun-if you looked for it. Service was attentive. I'd go again. An added plus is the free shuttle to the music center and the discounted parking.

Have Vegetarian Friends?
Border Grill is my favorite Downtown LA restaurant when I'm dining with vegetarians. There are lots of delightful fish, meat or chicken options for me and an unusually wide array of choices for my vegetarian friends. Service is also efficient and attentive, making Border Grill a good choice for pre-theater dining.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Tad Expensive but very tasty!
The Margarita for two they make at your table was really good, but of course disappears quickly! Nice fresh salsas for the chips and the food was greet. Definitely tastes fresh. The shuttle to the Disney Concert Hall was easy for the most part also. That was a good deal.

Go-to place in downtown LA
We visit LA several times a year and pop across the street to border grill every time. Love the attentive service, happy hour options, and quality of the food. Rajas tacos are the best!

Give a famous chef a chance
It doesn't matter to me what is currently trendy or hot. I like high quality interesting food, a nice atmosphere, good drinks and good service. The Border Grill has been around a long time and has a great reputation. We were going to be downtown for a show and decided to give it a chance. The food was very good to excellent. Not the routine Mexican or Southwest cuisine. The margaritas were excellent, and I'm a margarita snob. Our show that night wasn't so good, but the dinner was terrific and rescued our entire evening. It was easy to find, with adjacent, partially validated parking, so that was a plus as well.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
We visited Border Grill for a pre-opera dinner early on a Saturday evening. Stuck in freeway traffic on the way in, I called to let the hostess know we would be 10 minutes late. She was accommodating and let us know to "drive safely" and get there when we could. Super friendly hostess. We arrived and our party of 6 was seated promptly. Within seconds we were swarmed... Water glasses filled, chips and salsas laid out and the most lovely server taking our beverage order. Drinks arrived and we ordered dinner. Delicious entrees! My guests were truly impressed, mmmm'ing and ahhhhh'ing their way through their meals. Highlights were the Yucatan Pork, Pescado Veracruzano and the Barbacoa Tacos. We will all definitely return soon!

Pre Concert Dinner
Great place to have dinner prior to a concert at Staples or Nokia. They also have a dedicated shuttle to take you from the restaurant to the event.
