Food was mediocre at best.
Food was mediocre at best. The crab cakes were very salty. The restaurant looks nothing like the website. However, after a few drinks recommended by Raul made everything better. exceptional service. staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Will return!

The staff was very attentive and went out of their way to give advice on wine and food specialties. We tried several great S. African wines before settling on our final selection. They were very accommodating with our request for and and outstanding food!

My fav local hidden brunch treasure
Always a pleasant experience here... Promptly seated (always accomodating for latge groups, 8+), great coatcheck service, tasty food and generous refills on the unlimited mimosas at Brunch. Very reasonable prices for solid, unique food.

A pleasant experience
We used OpenTable to make a reservation, but when we arrived, they had no record of the reservation. Since it was early and they were not full, it was not a problem. We suspect they accidentally checked us in before we arrived, since we received the points nonetheless.
The menu is varied enough for differing tastes, but somewhat unusual. We tried the beet salad and the lamb empanadas. Really liked the empanadas! For main course we chose the salmon and the ostrich filet. Really liked the salmon which was prepared in a slightly different way with a crunchy coating. The ostrich was much like duck breast, but not as tender as duck would be--nor as flavorful. For dessert we had the mango mousse and the warm Malva pudding--YUM!

Midtown Brunch Gem
The host and workers were fantastic. The kept the drinks flowing and provided a fun, energetic and welcoming atmosphere to celebrate my partner's birthday brunch. We all had a fantastic time.

I was not expecting the food to be this good, probably because I didn't know what to expect. But it was amazing! Try the octopus appetizer and and order any of the lamb or fish dishes. My friend had the branzino and I had the lamb shank and both were excellent.

They're mid-way through a renovation / redesiugn. It's pushing for a much more chic / Cape Town feel than the previou African Safari themed place. I like it. But given they're currently half way through it, there are are a few unfinished touches.

The space is below street-level and narrow with tables in one side and bar on the other and a small dining room at the rear. The appetizers were very good, we had ostrich sliders, vegetable samosas and venison carpaccio for four of us. I had a strip steak and Lisa had branzino and although those choices are not adventurous, they were prepared perfectly. The wine list was all South African and the Left bank, a bourdeau-type blend was terrific. We'd go back.

My best friend requested to go to a South African restaurant for her Birthday to try something new. I chose to take her to Braai in New York.
When we walked in, a hostess greeted us and asked us where we wanted to sit. We thought the restaurant looked very sophisticated. The lights were dim and candles were lit at every table. We were a little confused as to what to order but our waiter cleared up all the questions we had. Our waiter was friendly and made himself available. Customer service was great.
Overall, this is one of the restaurants that I will continue to go to whenever I am visiting the New York area. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is very relaxing.

Braai is a Brunch Beauty
Braai is a wonderful Theater District find with an exceptionally fun and delicious menu of South African tapas and entrees, amazing cocktails and wines, and a superb staff that attends to you with amazing care but without being intrusive. The decor is simple but inviting and the food is dimply delicious and perfectly prepared.

South African gem
We were trying to find a late reservation in a neighborhood close to Times Square. This place is amazing. Beautiful cozy plAce with delicious food and wine. The lamb stew and the ostrich sliders are delicious. They have an extensive South African wine selection. My husband had a sidecar that was made to perfection. Order the Malva cake for dessert. The owner and hostess are really friendly. Great music . Love to go back next time

Good Last Minute Find
I took my South African girlfriend there for her birthday. We actually had plans to go elsewhere, but the weather was bad so we decided on Braai. It was a nice cozy place, quiet with good food and wine.

Nouvelle South African Cuisine
Braai was a highlight of our culinary time in NYC. The menu was traditional SA cuisine with a twist. It was fun with a touch of family favorites. Their Malva Pudding took me back to SA--don't miss out!
Some of the menu items were no longer available or they had run out which was a disappointment but we were able to find entrees that we thoroughly enjoyed. I would encourage returning Babotie to your menu.

Had a reunion with old friends and decided to treat them to something different. Food was great, as usual, but the noise level was too loud - played music not conducive to eating and sound was blaring from poor speakers. Hope they fix this issue sooner than later.

Once again a great experience
I originally reserved for a group of 8, but had no problem changing it to 12 when my group grew. We were sat very quickly and the unlimited Mimosas flowed lovingly. Food was once again excellent and tasty.

Always a Favorite
I make a point of eating here on most trips to New York -- where else can you get South African food in the US? It is always excellent. This time we had a large group, and they went out of their way to accommodate us and deliver good service. I just wiosh they'd bring back the original decor....

early dinner before a show
We went to Braai for a late lunch/early dinner before a Tuesday evening show and we had a wonderful experience. The food and service were great.
6/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great taste of South Africa
Braai offers up a superb wine list and a remarkable range of tapas and entrees reflecting just about every culinary possibility from South Africa. Great sauces and great presentation turn the meals into tiny adventures in dining.

Good food, expensive wine
Went to Braai after the theater. The food was delicious, with African and Indian influences. The friend I went with is a wine broker, and we decided to forego any wine and had cocktails instead, because instead of the usual 100% markup, it was more like a 400-500% markup. I guess that's how they make their money, since the food was reasonably priced as well as being yummy and unusual.
6/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
While I have had better South African cuisine, Braai's selections were very good. We went for brunch on a Saturday afternoon after taking the 3 hour full island cruise (definitely recommend this for tourist!!). The food was good, the drink specials were fab and fairly priced. The staff was very helpful, attentive and friendly. I can't remember her name but out waitress was from Detroit and she rocked!!! Would definitely go back and recommend to friends and family visiting.

Amazing Pre-Theater Dinner
My boyfriend and I wanted something a little different for our anniversary so we chose Braai and we were not disappointed! We started off with two tapas, ostrich sliders and brie, both outstanding. For our main course, the waiter recommended the oxtail and he was spot on. We went for an early dinner before seeing a show and our waiter made sure we would be on time. He was attentive and helpful, just all around excellent. The building of the restaurant itself is on the older side and the ceiling looked a bit worn but other than that everything was perfect. This place is unique and I will definitely be coming back!

Safari so good!
Braai is a hidden South African diamond just west of the theater district.
The food is outaranding-my group of four had an excellent brunch this past weekend.
Authentic--some flavors I hadn't had since I visited Sotih Africa a few years ago, and good memories begat future reservations.
Brunch menu is impressive in its depth and variety. My ostrich Benedict was terrific.
The buy one get one peri peri Mary's were a hit. And the sticky toffee piddong was a must have.
I will certainly be back.

Taste of home
As an expat South African, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from
braai. Man was I pleasantly surprised though! Everything was incredible - the portobello mushroom with chakalaka and goat cheese is a must. Both our entrees were extremely tasty but the best part was dessert. The malva pudding was as good, if not better, than anything I've had back in SA. I'll definitely be coming back here.

Pre show gem
Looking for a spot for a pre broadway show on a very hot and muggy New York evening. As an alternative to prix fixe menus available all around this looked like an innovative alternative. All major South African food traditions, black, white and brown very well represented, with a nice touch of fusion. Good wine list with emphasis on South Africa but given the heat of the evening we opted for a very refreshing white sangria. Ostrich sliders are great but so are the other appetizers enough to make meal.
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was excellent! I went there for lunch with my colleagues. Everyone agreed the food was excellent. The music was a little loud, but was turned down shortly after we arrived without asking. I would like to see what the ambiance is like for dinner. Will definitely return.

We were promptly greeted at the door by the maître d' and given a wonderful table. The waitstaff was prompt and attentive, but allowed us plenty of time to make decisions. Our meal was truly wonderful, the best we have had in quite some time.

Great nieghborhood Restaurant
I've walked past Braai on my way to work every day for months and decided to meet friends for dinner. I've never had South African food and wanted to see what it was about. I was really impressed with the service and overall feel of the restaurant. Everyone was very pleasant. I had a drink at the bar first, nice selection of wines from S. Africa. The group of four each had something different and each dish was very tasty. I will definitely visit again. The group beside me at the bar was having appetizers and they looked good as well. Loved the Peri Peri sauce.

Stumbled across this place while walking around NYC a few years ago. We had never had African food before and thought we would try it out. Glad we did. Food and service is great! We go there for dinner every time we visit NYC now - one of my favorite stops.

Great Food and Atmosphere
I have been here several times now, so feel able to judge based on overall experiences rather than a one-off. This is a nice, small (seats about 50) restaurant with genuine South African food. They have a tapas-like appetizer menu, entrees ranging from ostrich to prawns, a fulsome dessert list, and a solely South African wine list. For those who have been, you know that South Africans can do food. This is the closest you my come to replicating the in-country experience. The one downside is the service. It is sometimes tough to get the waiter's attention and dessert takes longer than it should to get to your table. Also, in the summer, no AC. But these are minor annoyances as the food is worth coming for.

Great Brunch Spot
I had brunch this past Saturday with a group of 10, and we had a great time. The food was delicious and the mimosas were free flowing, so I will definitely be back.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have been to South Africa before, and when looking for South African cuisine in NYC there aren't many choices! We sat outside, however the inside decor was simple, rustic and clean. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable of the wines and food. We had three tapas, Octopus, the Eggplant with Goat Cheese and the sausage, small portions, just the right size. For dinner get the Ostrich Filet and the Chicken, delicious!
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Chose this restaurant at the last minute to have my birthday dinner. The food was amazing. Great service. It was 10 of us (originally supposed to be 15), so I definitely recommend this for a place for about that amount of people. The drinks were nice, although they could have been a lil stronger (hehehe). If you like different types of cuisines, I definitely think you should try Braai. I'll be going again sometime in the near future.

Great for Brunch
Loved this place for brunch with a group of friends. Very friendly service

Great food. Inconsistent service.
I went with a friend for brunch. I'll start off by saying the restaurant was simple but beautiful. The food was delicious and very affordable for brunch. The woman who took our order was a bit cold, not very helpful, and didn't say much to us (no checking up on the table). Not sure why but we then got a different waitress and it was like night and day. The other waitress explained menu items, didn't make us feel rushed, etc. She made us feel like we were really welcome. I find it strange that one restaurant could be so inconsistent with service but, as I mentioned, the food was great!

Unique Pre-show Dining
If you are looking for pre-show dinner with a neighbor feel, Braai will fit the bill. The South African food provides the variety of Tapas or Entree dining that is perfect before show time. The white walls and bar tips provide a nice backdrop for the wine racks. White candles bring a warmth that make you are stopping by your favorite neighbor spot. The lamb shank was tender and delicious. The Tapas plate were easy to share. If you are looking for sometime different before a show give Braai a try.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
We've been going to this restaurant for quite a few years - our "go-to" whenever we are in Manhattan. Food and wine, as always, was fabulous!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
The menu is interesting and diverse--with ostrich, biltong and other SA-centric foods taking the lead. Go for the food, stay for the $12 endless "exotic" mimosas (they don't use OJ, but peach or passion fruit juice instead).
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Worth the trip. Something unique.
I was taken here by someone who had been to South Africa. The food was very good and apparently very authentic. The atmosphere was good too.

Great date night
Went wre in a first date which was perfect because we could order the 5 tapas option and split a salad. We also got one of the South African bottles of wine which was very good. For the tapas we got the ostrich sliders (delicious) the meatballs (also delicious) and the eggplant with goat cheese (the goat cheese was very tasty). We also got the curry samosa and venison carpaccio both of which were good but not great. The salad was a great avocado with lobster salad. Overall it was lovely - it's dark with candles on the table which made it very romantic. The only problem I had was it was a little warm in there, and the radiator made some odd noises, but nothing too bad. I will definitely be going back.
