This gen of a restaurant is one of the best kept secrets in the Castro neighborhood although judging by the crowd in attendance the night I was there, I'd say the secret is getting out. Excellent Italian cuisine with a good selection on the wine list. This is a restaurant I enjoy going to again and again.

Poesia is truly Italian, with
Poesia is truly Italian, with very tasty and tastefully presented food. Being a small space, it is a bit tight, which hinders some of a relaxed feelings and effects noise levels. Staff are considerate, friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the calamari appetizer. The special appetizer for the night was muscles and sausage in a fantastic marinara sauce.

Went to Poesia with a group of friends and easily found an 8pm reservation on a Saturday night the day of.
You can't get a reservation anywhere decent near mission on a Saturday night so I prepared myself for disappointment.
I was not disappointed.
We were promptly seated in the corner of the restaurant, which had a homey-living-room-like feel.
Grilled calamari and carpaccio appetizers were outstanding.
Wine list was reasonable with a decent selection of Italian wines.
Shrimp risotto was very good, homemade beet ravioli very unique and delicious, fettuccine with mushrooms on the money.
Quality of food is as good as Delfina (but arguably better value and ambiance).

Must try this Gem in the Castro!
My 2nd time at this quiet little gem in the Castro. Friendly and attentive service by each of the wait staff!!! Calamari and Kale salads were filling and delightful. Delicious hand made ravioli stuffed with beets and a great pork dish with roasted potatoes were our main course meals. Beautiful presentation on each dish. There is a small room at the front that has 5 two person tables and one round table in the middle that could seat 4+. Each time I have been at the restaurant there are customers only speaking Italian. Last time 3/ 5 tables up front were only speaking Italian. Each of the wait staff seemed fluent in Italian. Hints to me of the authenticity of this sweet Italian Gem!!! TRY IT and enjoy!!

Fantastic experience for our
Fantastic experience for our 14th wedding anniversary. Francesco, the owner was wonderful. he even didn't charge us for a bottle of wine that I ended up not liking. Took the half bottle left away and got us 2 new glasses of something we preferred. The home made pasta was awesome. Great gem of an Italian restaurant.

Excellent Italian Cuisine
You don't have to go to North Beach for excellent Italian Cuisine.
Poesia never disappoints - every dish is delicious and well prepared.
The service is excellent. The pasta is house made. The preparations are
simple but elegant. The sauces are the best. We'll be back.

I'm still thinking about the branzino I ate here last week. It was called "whole" on the menu, but it was boned with the head and tail left on. Small roasted tomatoes, an excellent olive oil, and lemon was all it needed - not too fancy, not too bare; and cooked to perfection. Perfetto! We followed this with a truly scrumptious conollo filled with mosparcone cream dipped in pistachios. One of the best dinners we had in San Francisco.
6/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I ate here for the time. Sat next to 2 regulars who said the food preparation was incredible. They were right. The grilled calamari salad was amazing and next time I plan to get the filet mignon salad. The staff treated us warmly and made us feel very very welcome. We'll definitely go back.

I could write poetry about poesia!
Whenever I'm in SF, I come here for an evening of Italian immersion. The food is exquisite - the perfect balance of local, farm-fresh, gourmet, homemade. The safe is the real deal - Italian through and through. And the icing on the cake is the classic Italian cinema projected on the wall. Don't miss the chocolate mousse with salt and olive oil!

Always a delight! The service, the drinks (try their special cocktails), the wines, and especially the superb dishes - excellent specials and hard-to-resist standards - all are top-notch. We have been frequenting Poesia since it opened, and it has never failed to provide a perfect evening for two, four, or a large group.

I was informed about this restaurant by chance from a first-time acquaintance who highly recommended I take my wife here for our anniversary; it certainly disappoint. We arrived early before our reservation & were immediately seated by the window which my wife was hoping for. Every staff person we interacted with was very friendly & excited to have us there. The owner came over to introduce himself & just as pleasant to converse with. The food was absolutely to die for & we can't wait to return to try the other entrees. We're also looking forward to bringing our son to their sister restaurant, Dante's Table, because he loves pizza. Poesia made our anniversary very special!

Great little Poesia
Third time for dinner. Pride Weekend 2013. Crazy, loud crowd outside. Inside, the food was, as always, excellent. My minor dig is that the restaurant ran out of the wine I ordered and other cocktail ingredients -- and this was at 6:30 pm. I'd also like at least 5 oz of wine in the wine-per-glass selections. They were rather stingy this evening. Buying a whole bottle seems a better deal here. Excellent fish and risotto.

Authentic Italian by Francesco and his terrific and committed staff who works hard to assure your dining experience is perfect

Truly Top Notch Restaurant
Took cousin and his wife, and two other family members here. We're fussy, ex-NY'er Italians when it comes to food. Cannot state highly enough how beautifully done every single dish was, seriously. We shared 4 appetizers: baccala with potato (OMG--everyone LOVED it); do not miss the Melanzane Parmigiana (eggplant parmesan--STOP--these are the LIGHTEST and tastiest slices of un-breaded eggplant that ever graced a plate--tomato sauce is beautiful; grilled sardine ceasar salad (very good/interesting very lemony ceasar dressing); and the most unbelievable grilled calamari you will ever taste--almost caramelized yet not rubbery at all.
We also tasted one another's entrees--and desserts to die for. Definitely experience this if you can!

Great hidden spot
Went here on a date on a Friday night. I was glad we had reservations, as the tables were full from 8pm when we sat down until when we left. This place is so cozy and cute. The atmosphere is really exceptional and the wait staff was very friendly. The pasta dish we got (the fileji) was simple but amazing.
The cocktails left a little lacking and the coffee was not good, but overall those were minor points for what was a great and very memorable meal. Totally reasonably priced for what it is as well.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Poesia was great in all aspects. Francesco the owner was really wonderful in getting me and my date a great table. The wine selection was enormous and the food was just simply wonderful!

Incredible Italian food!
What a gem this restaurant is! The owner, Francesco, brings some of the most original italian dishes from Calabria to the table. Fresh pastas and gnocchi, rich Italian wines, and AMAZING COCKTAILS! I recommend the Negroni and Dante Fresh Basil Ketel One Vodka Martini.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Poesia is Italian for Poetic Food!
Enjoyed the Arugula Salad & Home made spinach ricotta filled raviolis. The tiramisu for desert was very good. The Tuscan recommended wine was a perfect pairing to the comfort food tastes of the meal.
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our second visit to Poesia, and once again we were amazed by the flavors. Reminds me of my favorite restaurant in Florence. It's close quarters, so you kind of know how the other diners are doing -- and everyone seems to be totally charmed by their meal. Staff is professional and friendly, and never seemed rushed or frantic even at the height of Friday dinner. Poesia deserves to be busy all the time, plan ahead and make a reservation.

One of the Best Italian Restaurants
This is one of the best Italian restaurants not only in San Francisco, but in the Bay Area as well. It is like you are being welcome to the owner's house and being served authentic and gourmet Italian dishes. All staff are very warm and friendly.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great experience again and again!
We have been to Poesia at least ten times since it opened. We have never been disappointed. The whole experience from the food to the service is great. We love this place.
9/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Francesco was delightful and made us feel right at home. We arrived about 15 minutes before opening time and he brought out 4 glasses of Italian champagne to comfort us. The dishes were fresh, tasty, and generously proportioned. Great restaurant.

Very Welcoming Restaurant
My husband and I were watching "Check Please Bay Area" and immediately booked a table at Poesia using Open Table after seeing the segment on this neighborhood restaurant. The reviews were spot on and how refreshing it is to go to a restaurant with such warmth. Their welcome was genuine and the atmosphere was convivial. The food was as expected - fantastic! The service was no nonsense and not overly friendly - very professional. My only complaint was that the tables are situated quite close to each other which gave me a sense of being overly crowded. Hence the only "very good" rating for ambiance. That said, we will be coming back on a regular basis. We are happy to find a restaurant of this caliber within walking distance from our home.

One of the best meals I've ever had and I consider myself a foodie.....

My favorite restaurant
If you are looking for a neighborhood restaurant where you can feel 100% comfortable and well-looked-after, then Poesia is your destination. Absolutely authentic Italian food, always fresh and delicious, refreshing cocktails, impeccable but *not* snooty service, and Italian films projected on the wall! Cosy, romantic, and so, so warm. I heart Poesia and everyone who works there!
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Poesia... a gem.
Once again, have enjoyed Poesia on many levels -- good food that changes regularly so a few standards and then new items added with the seasons, good wine list spanning a range of prices for the bottles and also good by the glass or cocktails, and good service by servers who know their menu and wine list. Always a pleasure to go and see familiar faces amongst the waitstaff and the owner, Francesco, is truly a treasure and interested in your own experience in his restaurant. A rare find and a gem in my eyes.

Charming and Delicios! Grazie
Well sourced declicious dishes in a welcoming and lovely environment. One of the few worthwhile eateries in an area that is mostly about fleecing tourists.

I felt like I was in Italy!!
What a sweet place in the Castro! They show old italian movies on the wall. The food and passion of the staff made me feel as if I was in Italy. I will come back and bring more friends.

Interesting Italian Food
We had a great time at Poesia -- The beet and fig salad was great, the two pastas we had were good as well. An older Italian movie was projected on the wall (The Enemy of My Wife with Mastroianai). Service was excellent. We will definitely go back.
10/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
We took an out-of-town friend to Poesia and we all had a delightful meal.
Once again, I ordered the bread soup and ate every drop. For my main course, I ordered the pasta with sausage which was delicious.
Sadly, I got full early so I could not finish. But I got a wonderful take-home meal!

Excellent Italian restaurant
We were a group of five celebrating a birthday and the experience was delightful. The food and wine were both excellent. We had a great table. The owner took our order and was gracious with sharing insights about the wine. The atmosphere is nice; very comfortable and not pretentious. We had a really good time and will definitely go back.

Good value for tasty Italian
I've never had anything but great food at Poesia and this visit was no exception. I love the rack of lamb! Cooked perfectly with a lovely sauce and side of veggies. We also ordered the sea bass which was great as well. Our favorite though was the grilled calamari starter. If I could make that at home, I would never eat out.
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Been here for dinner four times and its always great food and a relaxed, intimate, home-like setting. Hope Poesia is around for a long time!

My wife and I thoroughly loved every bit of this restaurant
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent service, delicious food
The service was attentive and flexible to our requests. Homemade pasta, including a gluten free one, were excellent. Prices were in the less than $30/person for 3 courses, no wine, very reasonable for quality of food.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
brought back memories
My maternal grandparents immigrated from Calabria. My grandmother was a master of southern Italian food, and this restaurant brought back my best food memories. There were dishes I hadn't had for years....and they were wonderfully refined without a loss of what I remember the peasant dishes were.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurant is easily reached by public transportation (but parking is difficult). The staff were very pleasant and accomodating. The food selections were outstanding. Can't comment on the wine selections (don't drinnk wine) but the Martinis were top notch. The service was good and relaxed. A rather steep stairway gets you into the restaurant so it might be a problem for some.

Excellent Calabrese Food
Francesco the owner met us at the door, remembered our booking and sat us within 4 minutes. Helpful and very pleasant waitress (Napoletana) recommended the food and we were very happy with the choice.
Excellent, authentic Calabrese food,
If you like Italian food, it is as if the mother was busy cooking in the kitchen.
Check it out!!!

I've been to Poesia a handful of times and each time I have a wonderful experience. The food, vibe, service and overall experience is superb. I just can't recommend it enough.

Fantastic all around!
Everything from the food, to the venue, to the outstanding service made our experience top notch!
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was unique and delicious and the service was attentive. Our party was a bit large, yet we were given excellent recommendations from the menu and our server was quite attentive all evneing. The noise level in the restaurant made it difficult to communicate with people across the table. Lovely place.

Wonderful Family Dinner
My adult children and I visited San Francisco for a week and decided to have dinner in the Castro one night since we love that neighborhood. We found Poesia on Open Table and liked the menu. What a surprise! It was like walking into an authentic Italian restaurant in Milan or Rome. The owner was present and visited every table. We had delightful service. This is definitely a place we will re-visit each time we go to SF!
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
Drinks- Husband = Ellis Island, Me= Dante- so good, we ordered a second round
Antipasti -BEST bruschetta ever! Thin toasted bread, delicious prosciutto and the freshest mozzarella di buffala- can't stop thinking about it!
Dinner-Orecchiette Alla Calabrese, Fileji De Renato- we licked the plate clean
Great dinner to share with a loved one, or catching up with an old friend. The owner Francesco and his staff are so' attentive and friendly with their guests. The restaurant is in his home, there is no other Italian restaurant like this in SF or anywhere.
