I already loved coming here
I already loved coming here but this particular visit was through a Living Social deal. This worries me as daily deals sometimes mean the business is suffering-- PLEASE eat here so that the restaurant does not go away!! :) The food is so frickin good and the prices are excellent. This is definitely a neighborhood staple for me. The juicy pork, the pork and shrimp shumai, and the bbq pork puns are some of my favs. Mmmmmmmmm.... There are some dishes I'm not terribly fond of, but the deliciousness of those alone will keep me coming back. The service is always excellent and I really enjoy the vibe of the restaurant. Highly recommend!

A little underwhelmed
Food was good. Not much thought was given to seating. My husband and I were showed into a small window niche behind a large pole, next to a family with two small children. Our server wasn't very attentive. We won't be going out of our way to go back.

great food, not consistent
great food, not consistent service, but this can be over looked since the dim sum is pretty good; especially for those who do not want to drive to Alhambra or San Gabriel Valley for Dim Sum.

We have been coming here since they opened and Bao has become our spot to celebrate major occasions as a group or just as a a couple... the food is consistently awesome and fuses authentic flavors with a touch of welcome modernization. Plus, the bar is well-stocked and has much to offer everyone... The service here has always been attentive and top-notch, too!

Good Dim Sum on the Westside!
I LOVE Dim Sum, but the drive out to Monterrey Park makes it tough to get as much Dim Sum as I'd like. Having this very serviceable Dim Sum just 6 blocks from my house is brilliant. Sure, it's not the same, and it's not as good as a traditional Dim Sum experience, but a 3 minute drive makes me very forgiving. The Juicy Pork dumpling (Xiao Lin) is a must, as are the chicken pot stickers.

Mom says Thanks!
I went to Bao Dim Sum House for Mother's Day lunch at my mother's request for "some GOOD Chinese food" that of which I thought might be hard to find outside of Monterrey Park. My were we pleasantly surprised! Not only were the staff kind and attentive, they were accommodating to the +1 that arrived at the restaurant amending out party of 4 to a party of 5 without hesitation. All of the food was fresh and hot and easily unmistakeable making it a great place for dim sum newbies just getting their feet wet (like my mom). I will definitely be coming back to Bao Dim Sum House, not just for the great food but for the AWESOME ginger mojito!!
5/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
I love BAO. To start with, they have the best Lychee Martini in town. I usually have 3 while I'm there for dinner.
We also love the Ginger Mojito. Surprisingly, they even have some nice wines, as well.
Even if we don't make it to Happy Hour, there are so many things on their menu that we love. Even regular prices are fair.
I can't even pick favorites here, we love everything. We've tried about 85% of the menu already and nothing ever disappoints. We love all the dishes there.
The servers are all always upbeat, happy, welcoming and gay-friendly. They're all sweethearts.
There is nothing negative I could say about BAO, even if you put a gun against my head.
No wonder I'm a regular. I love the place!

Food was great, however, the place being calles the Dim Sum House misses the whole Dim Sum experience of the getting to pick out your food from the Carts found in authentic Asian Dim Sum restaurants as you can only order from a Menu. Being in West Hollywood however, this may not be the culture here, also, prices are much more reasonable in traditional Asian neighborhoods, but this is West Hollywood

one of my favorite restaurants. nothing like it around here...

Perfect for Colleagues
I was bringing a colleague to dinner from out of town, and she absolutely adored the dim sum here.
6/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food here is great, although it was a Sunday evening at 6:30 and they were running out of items, and still had a fairly packed house so that is not a good sign. The food is always spot on and comes out hot and fresh and is very good dim sum especially for those who do not want to drive to Alhambra or SGV.
The big issue is the service. Our server was horrible, and never came back to the table. It was impossible to get more water, napkins, new plates, or anything for that matter. To top it all off, the server took my credit card to close me out, and then took another tables' order, then stopped at another table to take some more orders and take down their livingsocial coupon. He then decided to close them out first. ANNOYING

Too much of a good thing
The dim sum here is excellent -- but the dumplings are at least 50 percent larger than what I'm used to. The great delight of dim sum is being able to savor different tastes one after the other. We ended up over-odering, and I was already feeling stuffed after eating just a few dumplings and half an order of the gnow mai gai (I asked the server to cut each one in half.) I know, I know, Americans like big portions -- but some of us weigh less than 250 pounds and can't consume such large portions. Perhaps the restaurant can offer its dim sum in two sizes.

Great dim sum
Not served traditionally with carts--and I would love that--but ordering off the menu is just fine as well. Traditionally prepared, high quality ingredients, and great service. We've been to Bao more times than I can count and we'll be back as many more, I'm sure. A really great find.
6/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Food. each dish that came out just kept better and better. Looking forward to going again. Highly recommend. Forget Chinatown Dim Sum. This is the real deal. Fresh ingredients. Great Taste

Accessible Dim Sum in Hollywood
The food was very good, fresh and succulent. They had most of the traditional dim sum and some newer fusion ones. There are no carts floating around so all the dim sum is ordered from the menu. There is also a nice picture menu to ease ordering as well. The prices were on par with other dim sum places so the bill was not outrageous even if it is in Hollywood. Overall very nice place to go for dim sum.
This has nothing to do with the restaurant but be careful where you park on the street! The parking signs can be very confusing! Most of the neighborhood parking requires a permit!

Excellent dim sum, but the service is a bit slow at times (possibly because we were in the back room)

Horrible service this visit!
We sat, literally, for 20 minutes before we finally waved down a server to take our drink order. We asked one server, who said she'd find out whose table we were at and we asked the same of a busperson. Neither one ever came back. Finally we did what nobody should ever do in a restaurant and we waved down a wait person from across the room. She came over and we were good to go after that/she said she didn't know whose table it was but she'd help. She was great, stayed with the table, and all was fine. If that had been my first visit to Bao, it would have been my last.

Authentic for West LA
I'm from Singapore and so am used to a certain standard for dim sum. I had my expectations very much managed before coming. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and taste. We ordered siew Mai (good), steamed pork ribs with black beans (exceeded expectations - this is always a "test" dish for me. It's hard to get right. They even got the smooth texture done well.)
For all the dim sum - I'm not used to the large size of each piece- they were big! Looked really odd and kind of cartoony. Am used to dim sum being a bit more......delicate. Overall, if you're in this part of town and don't want to drive far- this is fairly authentic dim sum (and a good Singapore fried mee hoon- the hong kong style). Yes, I'd recommend this place.

I love Bao.
I have been to Bao at least 10 times, and the food is always GREAT.
Shrimp & Pork Siu Mai and Chicken Potstickers are my favorites.
Service is always very friendly, but they always seem just a little too busy for the amount of servers they have on the floor.
But I will go back again and again, and I truly believe that Bao is one of the best values for a great meal in Hollywood.
7/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Pricey, but good quality food
Pricey dim sum, but available all day. Quality is good, as well as portions are reasonable.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
A change from the traditional
Great variety, great service and reasonably priced. This isn't the same dim sum that you will get in Chinatown or San Gabriel but, even the purists wouldn't be able to "poo-poo" some of the menu items at BAO. I don't go as often as I would like but, every time we go there it is always an enjoyable experience.
7/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Bao Dim Sum and then Some
Bao has never disappointed. The food is delicious and made fresh.
The drinks are always good.
All of the staff members are always friendly.
You really can't go wrong!

Lunch with my wife
My wife is Chinese and very particular about the Chinese restaurants that she dines. She is usually the one that decides where we eat when it is Chinese food. We were in LA for the day and I decided to make reservations based on a few reviews. She approved after admitting that she had her doubts about my selection all the way until the food arrived at the table. I've got to tell you if she approves, then it has to be a winner. I could probably never do this again in my lifetime. The ambiance is very nice. I love the way the restaurant flows. The tables are nicely spaced and the booths are large and spaced very well. The dining room is beautifully decorated and the staff is very responsive without being intrusive. The food is delicious.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
i love it every time!!! the service is hit or miss. just slow sometimes. doesn't effect me going back though cuz the food is yummy!
7/25/2013 5:00:00 PM
Excellent food, excellent service. Great place for dim sum.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
yum yum dim sum
I found this spot when a friend told me she wanted to go to lunch to somewhere new and different. I didn't really know what to expect but it really turned out to be a very pleasant experiance. We ordered 5 different items and they were all really good. The spicy chicken dumpling I thought were a hit. I only gave the food a 4 star because the chicken and spinach potstickers had some pink in it, is that the way its suppose to be? I thought chicken and pink don't go well together, i ate it anyway (lol) but i was weary about it. I didn't die which is a good thing. I'd definately go back to this place, it was great food at a reasonable price. Glad i found it :)

Delicious Food, So So Service
Bao Dim Sum serves seriously delicious fresh dim sum and tasty Chinese food. The room is lively, modern and attractive.
Our only issue with the restaurant is what appears to be a lack of experienced, thoughtful management and service. Several evenings we've arrived without reservations and while there were plenty of empty tables the people at the front desk (if there was anyone there at all) seemingly had no idea what to do with us. We sat around for 10 or 15 minutes without any service or even indication of when or if we would be seated. Even with reservations, there often is noone there to greet and seat you forcing you to distract a server or busboy to try to get served. All of this is easily resolved - hire some experienced management!

Great dim sum
Dim sum is great! Great cocktails and food, and convenient valet. Definitely be going again. A winner!
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent food but a little pricey
I miss going to the Empress Pavillion downtown LA, it has closed. The food here is better than that , but was a little pricey (at least twice the price that I would have paid there). I am assuming this was because of the location. Food was delicious though and it was worth it. Wait staff were friendly and service was pretty fast. I would go here again.

Well done dim sum on the Westside
Although a bit on the pricey side compared to most dim sum restaurants, this place is a gem. Beautiful decor. Picture menu is helpful for the newbie dim sum-ers, and it contains a lot of the tried & true dim sum favorites (har gow, sio mai, potstickers, egg rolls), as well as some interesting dumplings we've never seen before (wild crab). And the milk bao for dessert is top notch. Save room for that! Reservations through Open Table were easy and seamless.

as it should be, yet artisanal ...
For those who expect the typical Hong Kong dim sum restaurant, loud servers rushing you with steamcarts, don't come here. This place has original tasting, superbly handmade pieces. Prepare to wait. BDS is for those who want to be able to converse, eat at gentle pace, drink hot oolong in between. This group of chefs under Chef Chan take the time to ensure each piece has not lost the original taste. Artisanal. bread/dumpling casings-excellent. Consistency appreciated at each visit. Ambiance: moderate. Decor:simple teahouse.
My recommendations: WildCrab Dumpling, Ha Gow, PS Shumai, Crispy Crab/Shrimp Ball; Tofu Skin Rolls; Xiao Long Bao. MUST-HAVE DESSERT: Milk Buns and Sesame Ball with creamy redbean (eat right away. Best when eaten hot).

Bao Dim Sim is everything and more and went beyond our expectations. True stand outas L.A.'s premier place to enjoy the tastiest Dim Sum. Loof forward to going again and again.
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
after multiple visits I've tried every single item on the menu, and none has dissapointed me.... Rich flavours, great service, warm beautiful ambiance.... AND RIGHT PRICES.... This is one of my favorite places in LA

Delicious Dim Sum in WeHo
Baked BBQ Pork buns are good enough to be dessert. Juicy Pork dumplings were also delish. Be careful though, that soup is hot.

Rough Night at Bao
We love Bao...dine there all the time...but our dinner this time was really off, service-wise. Food, as always, was really tasty and a great value, but our server was either friendly and inept or friendly and absolutely in over her head, table-wise. She forgot two things, then disappeared for long, long stretches.
The service at Bao has never been stellar, but if my most recent visit to Bao had been my first visit, I probably never would have returned. As it is, I know that they are usually much better, so we will return.
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
TERRIFIC DIM SUM, BUT...
The dim sum here is every bit as good as anything you'd find at a top restaurant in Arcadia, but it's about twice the price. (However, considering what you'd have to spend for gas to drive to Arcadia, the actual total cost may be about the same.) The wait staff should be better informed about the items on the menu. They should particularly learn the Chinese names of the common dim sum dishes. Finally, the background music should enhance the Chinese food and decor, not clash with it. No one likes to listen to light disco or Beach Boys hits while wielding chopsticks.

My first time
I checked out this restaurant for first time based on friend's recommendation and I must say it was great

First time but a new keeper
Our party of four decided to try dim sun. This restaurant had an A rating. Others in the San Gabriel Valley had only B ratings. Dim sum was the first time for two of us. We loved, loved this place. Ambience is soothing. Wait service was attentive without being cloying. Food was delicious. Each Dim Sun selection was made fresh, no carts here.l I think this place may be better for lunch dinner. It was also affordable. We each paid $17.00 with tip. Pretty good for dinner.

The food was AMAZING, as was the service. All the staff was very attentive and the food always came out hot. I'm a lover of Dim Sum and this place certainly did not disappoint. Will be going back again very soon!

You can never go wrong with Bao. Amazing food, friendly service. We go every year for my birthday, and quite frankly, it is our default restaurant when we can't decide where to eat
Can't recommend it enough!

Love the dim sum!!!
Had five different dim sum, four steamed and one fried and then the milk bun for dessert. There were two of us and we could have gotten by with one or two less. This place is fantastic! All the food is cooked to order, not a cart dim sum place.....so fresh and delicious.......go!!!
