A wonderful dinner for date
A wonderful dinner for date night with my husband.

Had made lunch reservations
Had made lunch reservations prior to attending matinee at A.R.T. When we arrived we were warmly welcomed and it was noted that we wanted to be out in advance of curtain. Our waiter was informed and while he did not hover he was aware of our time and served us most efficiently...but never with a sense of rushing us. Really appreciated the fact that the menu entres allowed us to order appetizer portions. Perfect for lunch! Experience was delightful, food was delicious and soon even our waiter responded to the kidding and comments of three little old ladies in tennis shoes. Will return when next in Cambridge.

Great menu. I really enjoyed
Great menu. I really enjoyed the roasted kale salad although my husband found his Caesar salad was over dressed. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the beers on tap which made my husband meal. Inventive seafood entrees were well done. The restaurant itself is full of quaint charm and located in the heart of Cambridge.

Although full, noise was not
Although full, noise was not too bad. Food varied from good to out of this world great (particulary the lobster chowder). Ambience was very nice, bar has a wood fire (only place in Cambridge) and a dining room with a skylight. We had a table under the large skylight, which was very pleasant.

Food was excellent. Ended
Food was excellent. Ended up trying multiple things as appetizer sizes, to have a variety. Everything was delicious.
Service very good, although the waiter did forget my drink til end of meal.
Tables are too close together, made for a bit uncomfortable romantic evening. Felt cramped between two larger parties.
But overall, is was a very nice dinner.

What I love about this restaurant
What I love about this restaurant is that you can get half portions of many of the entrees; these are quite adequate in size, especially if you plan on having an appetizer and/or dessert. I had the duck and was asked how I wanted it cooked; my friend had the swordfish. Both were excellent as was the kale salad that we shared. Cocktails were yummy. Dessert choices were good. The main room was hosting a large party, and even on a weeknight (Wednesday), the room was completely full, so the noise level was a little high, though not overwhelmingly so. Reservations recommended! The Red House is in the heart of Harvard Square, but just off the beaten path. It is, as it says, an actual house that has for many years been a restaurant.

Romantic dinner spot
My companion and I had a charming table in the small front room, and the only thing that would have made it more charming would have been if the fire had been lit and the large party did not arrive towards the end of our dinner. How fun for them to have the room to themselves (as we did for a while). The food was very good. We shared a couple of apps and the half portions of our entrees were quite large. I love places that have great food and offer half portions! My companion is from England and we both agreed that only in America would that be considered a "half" portion!
The bar area looks like great fun, and the fireplace in there was lit. It looked lively but not too much so. Another reason I'll have to go back.

They were able to accomodate
They were able to accomodate my GF/SF/DF dietary restrictions! TRY THE KALE SALAD! It's awesome! Awesome lobster!

Unpretentious and Pleasant.
The Red House is a reasonably-priced dining alternative in Harvard Square. It doesn't fall into the cheaper "ethnic" food categories (Indian, Chinese, etc.), it's not as bar-oriented as John Harvard's or a student dive, and it's not as pricey as "special occasion" places such as Upstairs on the Square. They have a number of lobster specialties, and the lobster risotto is a good choice - a good amount of the shellfish in a creamy arborio rice mixture. The service is friendly, and as spring still has not yet arrived, the fireplace in the bar area is a welcoming spot. Overall, unpretentious and pleasant.

It was nice to be able to
It was nice to be able to order one of two sizes of certain entrees.

always a good experience at The Red House. Good food, good atmosphere and good service.

Altho I live in Cambridge, The Red House had somehow escaped my attention. I loved the (typically Cambridge) casual, funky ambience. The menu had some wonderful and unusual choices, it was difficult to select. The food was excellent, I got swordfish and it was tender, mild and juicy. The waitstaff were super nice and attentive. My dinner companion was 40 minutes late and they made me feel welcome and un-pressured as I waited, seated, munching on bread etc and sipping wine.

Delightful Tex Mex PopUp-Red House
We dined at Red House during the monthlong April pop-up restaurant serving Tex Mex by chef Amanda. Terrific food, great vibe, and fun to have the chef stop by and ask us about every course. There's only one Monday left in April, so we're coming back! Please have chef Amanda come again soon!

My kind of place.
Loved the menu, loved the level of elegance--still homey.
Some of the food just missed being great.
Still, I'd go again.

Classic New England
Great good and service every time we go. The small private dining rooms are really wonderful for small groups for groups as small as 6.

Our daughter chose the Red House for her graduation dinner out of all the other restaurants in Harvard Square. The food, service and atmosphere were superb! The desserts were, for lack of better words, to die for! It was a great place to celebrate a very special event for our daughter and family.
Thank you so much!

Reliable Neighborhood Spot
Whenever anyone comes to town, or when friends want to get together to have a bite of good food and a place where we can talk, I go to the Red House. I know that everything, from the staff greeting to dessert will be fine. Giving diners the option of having a full- or appetizer portion of their entree is, well, civilized. You don't end up stuffing yourself. Not a so-called foodie's dream, just a good, reliable place to eat.
5/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
Thoroughly impressed! Quality wine list, great bread to start, farm fresh salad, and generous half portion entrees. I highly recommend the linguini con carciofi.
Will definitely be back!

Consistently good food in a nice atmosphere, right in the middle of Harvard Square

Red House Rocks
The Red House is an outstanding restaurant. The ambiance inside as well as on the outdoor patio, fully equip with a bar where the oyster shucking takes place and ample outdoor seating. When sitting outside you can really turn on the people watching, as you enjoy delicious and creative dishes and $1 oysters paired with the perfect glass of wine. The lobster chowder, with full pieces of lobster tail, as well as their cocktail menu really make this a great spot for dinner with a date, family or just to catch up with some friends. I give the Red House a ten!

Our 4July Dinner
Our group of five was seated at a round(!) table.
Perfect for conversation with everyone in the party.
The cocktails were good and fresh. The bread was delicious
The appetizers were inventive and included interesting choices for the
Vegans and vegetarians among us.
Same for the nicely presented and tasty
Entrees. The refreshing desserts concluded a lovely evening in
an air conditioned dining room
Much needed on this sweltering 90 degree plus day.

I don't know how I missed this place before. Terrific food, convenient to Harvard Square, great service, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. We'll definitely return soon!

What a nice evening!
Sitting outside at the Red House was lovely. Great service, excellent food, nice ambiance. I used to be a big fan of Casablanca before it closed, and the Red House may take its place as my "go to" place in Harvard Square.

Great food and service. My
Great food and service. My first visit and I'll definitely be back. One of the best Harvard Square restaurants I've been to. Fresh, delicious food, accommodating staff. Oh, and the drinks are wonderful too!
The one drawback to sitting outside is the chairs, they are beyond uncomfortable.

We found this place while
We found this place while in Boston for conference at Harvard. It is close to Harvard Square and has a great atmosphere. The evening we were there they were out of several beers. The service was great and the food was delicious. Chek it out if you are in the area. Will not disaapoint.

Gem in the heart of Harvard Square
Great location, on Winthrop between Eliot and JFK. I'm in my early 50's, was looking for a place to go with several friends - The Red House was perfect. I had the Risotto - while I wasn't blown away, it was very good. Energetic atmosphere and still comfortable noise level suitable for conversation. Service was great. Beautiful summer evening and outdoor seating was available. Yes, I'd go here again and would recommend The Red House to others.

a fun night out with friends
We had a wonderful evening here, with excellent food (& good choices for our diner with food-sensitivities) & great ambiance. We scored a table on the patio and the staff were all attentive and accommodating. And what a surprise to find that their desserts were fantastic, especially the apple strudel. This place is a gem!

Nice find in Cambridge
We decided on this restaurant when we were taking our son to college. My grilled marinated steak tips were excellant as was my son's lobster risotto. We sat in the dining room which was the perfect place to be to hear both the jazz band which started at 11:00 and still hear table conversation.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious, every time.
I've been to the Red House probably 5-8 times. I am a student and it's my "go-to" when my parents are in town and want to take me out to dinner. I've never had anything here that I didn't really, really enjoy.
This past time, I had the Tuscan Kale Salad and the Pan-Seared Scallops (on a most yummy bed of curried and pureed cauliflower) as an entrée. I also tasted the salmon and the duck whatever it was. All great. Very reasonable prices, and usually the option to get half-portions, which I really appreciate.
I wouldn't think twice before deciding to dine here. Just do it.

Good but not fantastic. Service excellent. Surroundings excellent. Nic historic neighborhood.

Best in Harvard Square
I'm not wild about Harvard Square when it comes to restaurants, but The Red House is a rare exception. Their food is delicious, not under-portioned, the service is good, and it provides a welcome escape from the expensive, crowded bars that surround it. Two thumbs up!

Red House Review
As always, our dinner at the Red House was delicious. Food was perfect, service was perfect. A great place to go after work for drinks and dinner...relaxing, with great food!

Had dinner with a family friend here. Really enjoyed it and highly recommend the food!

Quaint and divine!
Small treasure in the Harvard Square area. Quaint little house with every space nicely arranged for a comfortable dining experience. The food and service were superb. Wonderful lobster dish options. Nice for special occasion, too.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Red House has a wonderful, comfortable feel as you enter. A nice bar room with a spacious dining room in the back. A sky light adds brightness. The menu is not overly extensive and the food preparation is excellent. Service was attentive and good.
We enjoyed our meal and will very likely return.

Lovely late lunch
Wonderful experience dining mid-afternoon here. 2 for $1 oysters from PEI were amazingly good -- balance of salt and sweet. Food was inventive and fresh, and wait staff helpful and attentive. Will return soon.

Good eats, Poor location
Lobster dishes were very good. Pasta and others good, but not exceptional. Service was attentive, but we had 5:30 reservation as restaurant is popular and books few days in advance. Was surprised by lack of good restaurants in Harvard Square area, but Red House is one of the better ones. Location is somewhat undesirable (alley) and I would not want to eat outside there.

The gem of Harvard Square
We have frequented and loved the Red House since the day it opened. The ambiance is excellent whether sitting outdoors in the summer or in by the antique fireside in the winter. The food is always excellent and if you are a key lime pie lover you can not do better!!!
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
My favorite place in Cambridge.
Austerity the last few years has caused the restaurant to narrow its menus options, but its dishes continue to be beautifully prepared. The wine list is solid and has good moderately priced options. The service is informal but friendly, courteous and efficient.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
We came here with my fiance's family the day after I proposed. The food was great, the service was better and the drinks were best!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Pleasant atmosphere good food
This was a nice place. Both food and service were very good. Nice for a large group too!

Lovely food, nicely served. We had a great time. The portions were great and the flavors were excellent. Will definitely go back.

A great dining experience
We enjoyed our recent dinner at The Red House. Our table was ready when we arrived - a corner with bench seating and lots of pillows. The Lobster Fra Diavolo was among the most delicious meals I have ever eaten in a restaurant. My husband loved the scallops. As a starter, the squash soup was perfect. Service was attentive, the wine reasonable, and we look forward to a return visit.

Food was very good but not
Food was very good but not knock-your-socks-off good. Ambience was great. Service was attentive, almost but not quite to the point of being obtrusive. I would go back.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Perfect for a winter day
I loved the Red House...we sat in the bar area, which was not crowded or loud when we went (for lunch). The very best part is that we sat next to a beautiful roaring fire. It was so warm and cozy that, honestly, the food was secondary. Though, the food was very good.
Also, the server was really pleasant!

Red House was Red Hot!
We had a thoroughly enjoyable dinner with friends last weekend. There were six of us and we decided to sit in the bar area - directly in front of a beautiful fire place that was kept burning all night long. The service was quite good and the food - delicious! We had the braised beef ribs (yummy) and fish. Both dishes were delicious and the portions were very generous. In fact, we were too full for dessert. The cost is modest and worth the food and experience. We are definitely going back!

Warm inviting fireplace on cold day
Our party of four enjoyed the special Thanksgiving menu. It was a cold, windy day, and we arrived 15 minutes before one pm opening, but they invited us in to have a drink by the fire. Very understanding when the other members of our party were held up. Special Thanksgiving menu was great. I enjoyed the oyster stew, my wife loved the sauteed sea scallops. Service was good, and we never felt rushed by the friendly wait staff. Good dining experience, and we will definitely return.
