Went to a show & arrived 20 mins late. Got there & said we were 1/2 hr. late & gave our seats up. However, within 1-2 mins the host said we could get a table within 5 mins. That was ok with us and enjoyed our dinner. This would not prevent us from going again.

Everything it was cracked up to be.
Had such a great romantic diner here. It's off the beaten path and one of H-Kitchens true gems! Unlike other restaurants their wine list is both impressive and in stock. Service is wonderful and the ambiance is intimite. All and all 2 thumbs up!

We love Gallo Nero Wine Bar, and highly recommend it!
Every bite of our food was delicious, and the wine we chose was a perfect complement to the meal.
You will not be disappointed!

Great Pre-theater Dinner
Since its on the other side of 10th, it does not get the tourist traffic the haunts the midtown theater district. Small little bistro with and excellent menu. The prosciutto is to die for.

A cut above the usual for that area
The problem I had was with the menu. I had expected an Italian restaurant, if not the usual standards one finds everywhere, but only half the dishes seemed truly Italian. Yes, I know that Italians eat roast chicken but I can go anywhere for that, perhaps not prepared as well, perhaps better. But I had gone to this restaurant for Italian food, and if you subtract all those dishes that one doesn't normally find everywhere, there wasn't all that much that was Italian in this Italian restaurant.
I'm sure others would disagree, as this is a quality restaurant, and although it wasn't what I had anticipated, it was still a delicious meal and I'd certainly go back.

Another good experience
This is my fourth time to visit Gallo Nero. I have not been in a year or so. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I had the spinach gnocchi and it was marvelous.

Great Italian Food!
A little small and tight, a little loud but the BEST Italian food I have found in NYC so far! The manager, Brian (who may even be the owner) made us feel like we were family coming over for dinner! He selected amazing wine for us and circled by at least three times to make sure everything was perfect. The staff was on top of their game and didn't miss a beat.... A really enjoyable evening!
6/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We ate lunch at this quaint establishment. Everything was great and affordable. We will definitely come back.
6/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Went here for dinner with my fiance and a couple friends -- they had a GREAT wine selection and we LOVED the flatbreads that we started with. I got a skirt steak and it was good, too -- but I wasn't in love with my dish as much as the flatbreads. I'd definitely go back and keep trying things on the menu. The staff was really nice, too! Great place!
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have eaten here several times. Food is not outstanding but is consistently good. Prices are typical for the theater district places. Service is efficient and attentive. Place is dark and tables are close and it can feel just a tad claustrophobic. In warmer weather noise and lights levels get mitigated by the doors being open. Portions are neither large nor small. Wine selection is adequate and prices are within reason. My date had the lasagna and I had the gnocci. Everything tasted freshly prepared and was deivered to the table warm. All in all, a satisfying experience

Had an interesting menu great
Had an interesting menu great food good service and casual atmosphere
We had a terrific experience and will return

Good pre theater spot
Highly recommended. The farfalle with shrimp and the rigatoni were excellent. One of our favorite restaurants in NYC. Staff is very helpful and accommodating.
6/24/2013 4:00:00 PM
great service and interesting beers
Met a friend for a pre-theater dinner. Service was accommodating, fast and friendly. Enjoyed the beet salad very much and the salmon was cooked beautifully. Especially enjoyed trying some new and very flavorful beers from Italy. Started to get pretty loud around 7:00 as one might expect. All in all, a very good experience.
6/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
We were looking for a pre-matinee lunch place just outside of the tourist/theater craziness, and this was absolutely a perfect little nook for us. The other reviews have referenced the noise level, but for a Saturday lunch, there were only a few other couples and it was absolutely lovely and the service was extremely personal, attentive and friendly. We were offered tastes of wines, and even a limoncello as a departing surprise. The gnocchi was amazing, and my partner's hanger steak was fantastic. We will definitely be returning when we are in town. A gem!
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
It's just good food
As recommended in earlier reviews, I went with the gnocchi & it was marvelous; my cousin went with one of the salads & enjoyed it. There's noise (music a bit loud in the small space), but you can easily carry on a conversation. Service was excellent. We splurged on dessert, the pear tart & tiramisu. It was a great way to end the dinner.

Great all around
Love this spot because its always like your in your own little world....
7/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
My boyfriend and I went here for dinner since it was in the neighborhood. It was easy to make a reservation and the host had a table for us. It is a small restaurant and it was definitely cramped in there. The food came in a timely manner and it was pretty good. We ordered the calamari, gnocchi, and lasagna. All were delicious. Portions were smaller than what we're used to but it was enough (especially since I loaded up on the bread they gave us). It was a bit pricey in our opinion, but we're glad we tried it.
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food, wine, service all great
This is the 2nd time I've been to Gallo Nero; this time I brought 2 new friends. Is great location close in theater district, yet the ambiance is not touristy or overpriced. Food and wine worth the price; waiters are knowledgeable both about the food and the wine. Wine list is extensive, but glass or bottle. Food was consistently good, everything fresh and prepared according to requests. Service is quick--we had 7:30 tickets. I will be going back again soon.
7/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was a 10. The space
The food was a 10. The space is tight but not so bad after a glass of wine. The chairs are not the most comfortable, they are small and have rattan seats. Staff are friendly I would absolutely recommend!
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, the owner is an
Great food, the owner is an eclectic guy who loves to entertain. Beware the space is small and tables are quite crowded. Also, the music is always on at a really loud level. However, it is a great place for quality Italian food at reasonable prices.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great find in the theater district
Tried this restaurant based on reviews, and for location near the theater. Was pleased all around. The food was very good . We tried a special, carrot gnocchi, that was awesome. Open doors onto 44th street was nice, but the restaurant remained quiet, very pleasant. I will go back, and highly recommend it.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a great place to dine after a matinee in NYC. Location is convenient to all the theaters and the food is great!

Fav Italian Restaurant in the City
Brian, Simone, and the rest of the staff truly take care of you. Any Bolognese pasta or meat tortellini are amazing.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Incredible from start to finish
Exquisite yet unpretentious and non-touristy spot near Times Square - who would have thought? The wine list is impeccable, and the waitstaff is very helpful in helping you select the right bottle. The food was 'moan-worthy' -- especially the beet/Gorgonzola gnocchi ! wow.
A quaint, brick-walled and wine bottle-lined interior gives the atmosphere of a neighborhood bistro in the Italian countryside. It's charming and cozy and perfectly located near the Broadway theaters. Honestly, couldn't rate it higher in any category. Four people split the bill - 3 bottles of wine, 4 appetizers, 4 entrees, 2 dessert - $87 total per person !!! A MUST GO spot.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
This place feels like home. I eat here every time I come to NYC from LA. They always remember me
even though I only come 2-3x/year. Service is always friendly and attentive, food is consistently delicious and the atmosphere is always buzzing. It's perfect to meet a few friends or for date night. Great wine list and excellent, crowd-pleaser selection of dishes. It's a favorite!
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Cute Neighborhood Cafe
This place is close enough to the theaters for a quick bite before a show, yet far enough away from the madding Times Square crowd to give you time for conversation and to enjoy the food. The food was excellent, nicely prepared and served well.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and value pre-theater
What a fantastic find in the theater district with a charming interior and great food at un-New York prices! They have truly flavorful Italian fare, a great wine list by the glass and bottle and a fantastic location.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wanted to try something new in the theatre district, that did not serve brunch on Sunday. Nice intimate restaurant reminding us of Rome. Doors were open to the street, a lovely breeze, a beautiful day. The rib eye was excellent. Would recommend and will return.
8/24/2013 5:00:00 PM
Very Good Experience
A very pleasant dinner with friends. Food and service very good and a very comfortable ambiance.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dined here 8/29/13 with family before the theater. Quaint, great food and service. Nice selection of wine. The place is a bit small and loud however, I would definitely recommend it
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Over the years I've tried several pre-theatre restaurants in the theatre district and must admit this is the best one yet! An intimate little restaurant with friendly staff along with excellent food/quality/selection and a great wine list. Don't miss this one if you're heading into the theatre district - you won't be disappointed.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Happy to have found this gem of a restaurant with a romantic atmosphere and delicious food. I look forward to dining here next time I visit NYC.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
What a nice surprise
Went with some friends and I had never been before.
Food is really good and the service impeccable. They have a very nice list of wines and - being Italian myself - I found the whole menu pretty authentic.
Nice place for an everyday dinner or a special occasion.
You know? That feeling that makes you feel comfortable....
I'll definitely go back.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Such a great surprise
Was meeting another couple for dinner and thought to look up Gallo Nero. We'd been there before but thought of it as a wine bar -- good wine and small plates.
We were all so surprised. The food was great, and the service friendly and attentive. It's a new favorite.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
my second time
Went for dinner with a couple of friends I hadn't seen in years. The atmosphere was perfect, so was the food. Personnell was attentive and kind. I will go back again!
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved the pumpkin ravioli
One of the specials of the day! Love it, would definitely recommend the place and the ravioli's. Did not liked the dessert. Ordered a soufle and seemed a molten lava cake. Was not really decadent. Would come back for dinner but not for dessert.
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great neighborhood gem
Love the food and the ambiance. The specials are always delicious. This is the 3rd time I have dined here and I have never been

A NYC gem
So glad I listen to my friend to try Gallo Nero...it is a MUST if your in NYC
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
WE ENJOYED EVERYTHING AND
WE ENJOYED EVERYTHING AND EVERYBODY AT THE RESTAURANT. ITS VARIETY, QUALITY, WILLINGNESS TO SATISFY (A TYPICALLY ITALIAN TRAIT) MAKES THIS A DEFINITE "COMEBACK" PLACE.
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing NYC find
Discovered this place as a close to my hotel opentable search. What a gem! Was with a business group of people after a trade show day at Jacob Javits center. Close by and an easy walk. Opentable search and quick reservation went perfect! Go here for an amazing NYC Italian dinning experience!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, wish there was more!
Overall, my date and I were very impressed with the quality of the good and the atmosphere of the restaurant. We really enjoyed the candlelit, romantic side of Gallo Nero. My sole complaint is that the portions were not as large as I would have expected from an Italian restaurant, I thought there would have been more food per meal. Overall, a very good restaurant though!
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
good theater district dinner
looked online for last minute dinner reservation for a Friday night, and found this , very close to the theater we were attending. Great main dish pumpkin ravioli (special) , reasonable prices, we had salad apps and pasta mains, good bread! Wine by the glass was high at 11-13, but I suppose typical for NY.
tight space though, don't come with large bags or coats!
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was Our first visit to Gallo Nero so we wound up arriving about 30 minutes early for our reservation not expecting to be seated. We were politely asked to relax with a glass of wine while we waited, so we sat at a small table near the window and enjoyed watching the staff hustling to meet customer's needs. We were seated at our table shortly thereafter and, even though it's a very small restaurant and I don't think another table could have been squeezed in, we didn't feel cramped. We did enjoy the atmosphere and our meal: Pumpkin Ravioli, Clams w/Linguine, and we shared the Strawberry Cheesecake which was also really good and creamy.
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great neighborhood italian restaurant. We went before the theater and the service and food was outstanding
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Most of the places in and around the Theater District are either overpriced, have bad food, or both. At Gallo Nero we had an amazing wine from an extensive list, fantastic food (the linguini and clams had more clams than linguini - yum!!!), a wonderful waitress, and an attentive host who immediately asked if we had a show (we did) and made sure we were out of there on time. Charming, quaint, friendly, delicious. We'll be back.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Knowing we had to make an 8 pm show we needed a restaurant near theatre district that was tasty and get us to show on time. In this way Gall Nero did not disappoint. Though the dining area is small, it is a handsome and cozy room. The wait staff is capable of negotiating the close quarters and can deliver your drinks and dinner efficiently. The appetizer of bruschetta trio was delicious, the beet salad filled the bill. The pork scallopini piccata with mashed potatoes and spinach was terrific. The spaghetti with clam sauce was everything we wanted, a generous portion of fresh clams, but were underwhelmed by the amount of pasta. We would come again, but, be advised the noise level was high. Lower the music.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great spot had dinner on Monday food was good wine even better
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
Superbly prepared dishes in a very romantic, if cramped atmosphere remeniscent of a lot of neighborhood restaurants in Rome. Carbonara is to die for, breads are wonderfully crusty, the kitchen speedy, the wines reasonably prices and the service staff attentive and friendly.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
A step away from the Theatre!
Enjoyed the dinner. A friend recommended the restaurant. Its extensive wine list was great, and the variety of delicious food choices was perfect for vegetarian and omniverous tastes.
