As always, dinner at the National Exemplar was great. Kudos to them for each year setting aside an evening when proceeds benefit the Cancer Support Community, a free program that gives psycho/social support to those facing cancer, as well as caregivers and families. A big THANK YOU.

Never a bad meal.
This is one of our favorite restaurants. We have never had a bad meal there, and we rarely get the same thing.

This has always been a good,
This has always been a good, steady restaurant, with a reliable menu that seldom changed. The new chef has expanded the menu, while retaining most of the "classics". I had the short ribs over pureed parsnips this time. I had had the chef's short ribs at his prior restaurant, and was looking forward to them again. This time, they did not hit the spot for me. They were so tender, that I never used my knife, which was a positive. However, they seemed to lack the flavor I recalled from our earlier meal. Nonetheless, we will be back to try other new entrees.
As always, the service was prompt, knowlegeable, and friendly.

Excellent food, excellent service, and a nice atnosphere. The Spring Menu was recently released, and has a lot of new delicious dishes on it, it was hard to make up my mind on what to eat. Highly recommend trying the mushroom soup, and the seared scallop appetizer was amazing!

The service was excellent.
The service was excellent. The food was amazing (you have to order the mushroom soup!). I loved the new scallop appetizer. It's a fantastic restaurant in a wonderful neighborhood.

Great food, excellent service, an all around very nice restaurant to go to.
A very interesting menu with some very different food and flavor combinations. The food experience was well worth the trip.

30 years and better than ever
We celebrated our 30th anniversary and we were surprised to find it was the restaurants 30th anniversary too. Free glass of champagne and a special 4 course dinner for $30 was out of this world yummy!

I have no clue what they have done to the menu but its so limited. One chicken dish. A couple months ago they had more to offer. What has happened. Won't be back til I hear they add more. Place was totally empty for a Friday nite. That ought to tell you something.

Really good food!
We celebrated my birthday at this restaurant, and it was great. We were HUGE fans of Hugo in Oakley and were sad when it closed. When we discovered that Hugo's owner/head chef was now the head chef at National Exemplar, we decided to give the restaurant a try. We weren't disappointed. Some of the dishes were "safe" to appeal to regulars, but several dishes definitely had a bit of Hugo flair to them. Overall, it was a great experience!

Awesome service with a smile
Went here as a special date with my husband and loved it. From the time we checked in everyone was over the top nice. I loved how the entire staff worked together to make sure we were taken care of. Great server training. We will be back. Loved the veal.

The National Exemplar has seen its aging clientele of locals wane over the years. But I'm pleased to report that this once tired and stodgy restaurant has been reborn, thanks to the talents of chef Sean Daly. It can't be an easy job - attracting new diners with increasingly sophisticated palates while taking care not to alienate the old faithfuls. But in order to thrive (not just survive) one must be willing to reinvent. To that point, I recommend the grilled salmon with butter beans, broccolini and bacon in a mustard cream, pinot reduction. I also loved the Weisenberger grits with bacon. Service was very good.

It has been some time since we visited this restaurant. It was always good but I felt it was an older generation. Wow! To my surprise, it was vibrant, fun and atmosphere inviting. Every dish we had was amazing too (mushroom soup, crab cakes, scallops, pasta). The server was pleasant and very engaging. Bravo!

crab cakes, salads, mushroom soup, steaks were great. veal with pasta was ok--pasta was bland. Drinks were great. I would definitely recommend and we will definitely go back.

The best prime rib in town & excellent menu for chicken, fish & steaks. I am a liver & onions fan and this is an excellent choice . We always ask to be seated in the back pub room.

We had some preconcieved ideas about this establsihed restaurant, having dined here off and on for years. It is not the tired, old place that some may think -- I've heard comments that it was an older crowd. Yes, the liver and onions and veal suzanne and outstanding mushroom soup are still on the menu but there are many fresh takes on other entree itemes. The filet and prime rib are good examples of solidly done food, ample servings, and good accompaniments. Take another look !

The first time I brought my parents here the food was excellent the second time for my birthday even better!!! The waiter was good the service was good the special on the baby back ribs was especially delicious!!! This is a great neighborhood restaurant with excellent top-notch food definitely recommend!

Everything from the Grits and Crab Cake Appetizers to the Main Courses of Prime Rib and Filet that we ordered were outstanding. Highly recommend for those that have not tried.

We had forgotten how enjoyable ...
It has been 2 years since we last dined here ... Over the years we always enjoyed the food and atmosphere.
Our recent visit was a most happy reminder of how much we enjoy and appreciate your establishment.
Clearly, everyone is focused upon a truly enjoyable experience ... The food and service was outstanding!
We certainly look forward to returning more often.

We took my Dad out for his 91st birthday and had a wonderful time. The food was awesome and everyone was very friendly the moment we came in the door. Highly recommend the veal and carrot cake, best I've had of both!

National Exemplar was recommended to us by a friend and it was a great recommendation! Our server recommended the Duroc Pork and my wife said it was the best thing she had ever eaten. Everything on the plate missed perfectly together to create a party in my mouth. I had never heard of bacon jam before but it was awesome! Great food and service!

could not have been better
We were there with a group that kept changing in size as we were being seated. Moved from 5 - 7 - 9 - 12 and back to 10
Lisa the manager was very gracious and accommodated all of our confusing changes. The food and ambiance was excellent.

Very good dining experience
Having tried many restaurants in the area during an long business trip, this is my second favorite and for a very decent price. I had the smoked salmon for starter. It comes with a poached egg, asparagus, a wonderful sauce and some warm bread. Then, I had the fish of the day, which came with a small potato soup beforehand, then nicely cooked veggies and nuts with an eggplant puree. The waitress let me sample a few wines until I found what I wanted.
I had no room for dessert but she offered me a small sample anyway with the check: an Amaretto fudge, amazing!
Everything was delicious and the price more than correct for the quality (45 USD + tip for one person with 2 glasses of wine). Would highly recommend it!

8 for dinner
The Exemplar turned out to be a great choice for our group of eight men for dinner. The service was outstanding especially in view of our request for separate checks. The food was served in a very timely fashion as were our drinks and dessert and coffee. The noise level is relatively low so that we did not need to raise our voices to be heard at our large table. We enjoyed our meal and we will definitely return.

nice quiet evening by the fire
Had a great ambience---felt like an old English tavern, without all the noise. Their food was very good--great pork osso bucco. We had a group of people and it was actually nice because we could have a nice conversation without feeling like you had to strain to hear people talk--it was a quiet atmosphere. Overall, very pleased with the experience.
