Great Mexican food and awesome guacamole! Service was really good also.

Although I've eaten better food overall, there were items that stood out on the menu. I highly recommend the ceviche! The service was outstanding!

Just excellent mole, reasonably priced, and a fun place.
Great mezcal cocktails.

Fresh/refreshing take on Mexican.
Fresh/refreshing take on Mexican. Very "mole" focused menu but don't let that deter you! They have about 6 different types of mole and our server hooked us up with a tasting of each of the moles before we ordered. Our entrees were perfectly prepared. Oh and some of the best margaritas I've tasted in DC ... even better than L'Oreal's.

The food is delicious and so are the jamaica (pronounced "ha-MY-ka") cocktails.

delicioso como siempre
The food, as always, was excellent. We especially appreciated their vegan menu items and were particularly impressed by the ancho chili relleno. A roasted pepper appetizer, while delicious was disappointing in terms of bang for the buck - two skinny peppers, with nothing else, for $7. Much better were the cactus fries. I've always found the service to be very friendly and fun. We had trouble with parking and were about 15 minutes late for our reservation. But, they still managed to seat us within less than 5 minutes of arriving (and the restaurant was full). It's a gem.

My wife is vegetarian and I follow a vegan diet. We both ate very well! The vegan options on the menu were creative and full-flavored. Gluten free options were all marked GF. It was so refreshing to find a Mexican restaurant that served more than just meat. Our Cinco de Mayo dinner was a lot of fun and very tasty. It was well worth the drive in from suburban Virginia.

All around great place
service was great, food was outstanding (best fish tacos i've ever had). we had a screaming child at a table nearby and the staff was accommodating and moved us to a table in the back. Get's pretty noisy as the place fills up but I hear the upstairs is quieter.

Great food with warm hospitality.
I started with Margarita and Chips with guacole and salsa. Them the beef flank steak dish with some rice. Finished up with desserts - tres leche- was excellent.

Went there for the first time. Most of the moles are pretty darn tasty and not too Americanized. Actually, from what I recall of eating some in Mexico, these are pretty close to the real deal. The wait staff were friendly, informative, and helpful. My date and I peppered our waiter with questions. He was patient and answered them all and even had a good sense of humor about it.
Would definitely return and definitely recommend to others.

Lovely Friday Evening
We came to Casa Oaxaca for Valentines Day, which was a great decision. We had been thinking about going back, so we made a last minute dinner reservation for a Friday night. We asked our server if we could try a taste of each of the different moles, before settling on entrees. He brought out a very colorful plate with a tiny bit of each flavor, and he explained to us what they all were. The food was great.

Great little find
A little gem that we stumbled on near the Washington Hilton that we were staying at. Traditional Mexican menu fantastic mixture of tastes. We had tacos with an additional hot sauce washed down with Corona for the adults and coke for the kids. All in all, great tasting food at a sensible price

Tasty Mexican food
We were attracted by "Oaxaca" in the name. We've spent months there and have an appreciation for the food. The restaurant uses several moles which are a staple of Oaxaca. But there is a variety of dishes from other parts of Mexico (the owner's roots are in Mexico City) so we tried some of those. We had excellent ceviche and pork and lamb dishes. Everything was delicious.

Great Vegan menu, too.
I've discovered my new favorite mole at Casa Oaxaca! They serve classic dishes and contemporary options. I'm so glad that they have a tasty menu for vegans, too.

Had the shrimp enchiladas and they were fabulous. The fresh guacamole was very tasty an margaritas were not weak. Definitely would recommend!

Outstanding food and service
the only reason i gave it a three star for Ambience is that it's always a little too warm there. So dress in layers or lightly no matter the time of year. that's really the only downside to an otherwise fabulous and still-hidden neighborhood gem.
The food is outstanding. I tried the filet with a smoky mushroom cream sauce this time around and it was amazing. The ribs with a green mole are another favorite. Seven moles (maybe eight now) to try...so you must go at least that many times!

uniquely delicious -- and beautiful
We love Casa Oaxaca and would make the effort to go regularly even if it wasn't just a few blocks from home. Wonderful moles (we particularly love the black and the verde). Nice big tart margaritas. And no gloppy cheese melted all over everything.

Our server was great and we
Our server was great and we sat down right away! The ambiance was nice and the noise level wasn't an issue. The food was a little bland and we didn't get Chips and Salsa with the meal... that was strange for a Mexican Restaurant. Finally, the server added tip for our group of 6. That's not a problem, we would have tipped him more had he not, but it's a little insulting.

Top Mex & veg/gluten-free friendly
A true neighborhood gem on 18th St., entered speak-easy style from the lower staircase. From the outside, you can't tell it's hopping with every table or booth full.
Casual, with delicious, homemade Mexican food -- fresh chips and salsa from scratch, and a varied, authentic menu from plantains to ceviche to a selection of mole sauces (savory sauces with a chocolate base) so vast, the waiter will bring you a multi-colored plate to try them all before ordering. The menu also helpfully lists which options happen to be vegetarian friendly or gluten free, and the waiters can let you know what's in most everything.
The tequila flights are worth trying as well -- a chance to experiment sipping tequilas you likely haven't seen before.

One of my favorite Adams Morgan spots, a good Mexican restaurant in a city with otherwise lousy Mexican options.

Great food, great fun!
We highly recommend this place. We were visiting from Portland (foodie place on its own) and took our 20- and 23-year old kids to Casa Oaxaca. There was something for everyone. The menu is diverse and the food is really good. The service was great and the setting is really fun. Very affordable as well.

Good authentic Mexican food. We love the HH prices and the people who work there are always friendly. THe food is good, not great but it fits my cravings.

Fantistic from Start to Finish
First visit to Casa Oaxaca. It was fantastic. Love true Mexican food, and that is kind of hard to find in DC (most are Salvadorian). Wonderful margarita, great appetizer of fresh guacamole. Dinner - was huge and almost too much too eat, but made the sacrifice and ate it all. Desert, love churros, especially the way they make them.
Not easy to exactly find the right door to enter, but well worth it!

two out of three great dishes!
The staff are terrific, and they found us a nice seat even though we arrived a bit early for our reservation. We highly recommend ordering several dishes from the appetizers menu, we had two outstanding items ( a creamy Tamal Oaxaqueño wrapped in banana leaves, and a Kekas three tacos dish with huitlacoche, pork, and mole, wrapped in blue corn tortillas). However, the vegetarian entree we ordered was dominated by lettuce on top, which was a bland disappointment. Nevertheless, it was a fun evening, with a great atmosphere and very kind and attentive staff!

Wonderful attentive customer service - great advice on dinner for us.

Menu was interesting and different, not your everyday Mexican. Goat cheese in my enchiladas! Liked it a lot.. And How can you not like mole sauce?

Great food and MOLE!
Mole sauces are excellent, very unique! Great food, great drinks!

Not many authentic Mexican restaurants in DC, but this one is amazing. They have a flight of mole! Enough said.

Amazing food, as usual
I love this place and HAD to come here for the Dia de los Muertos food specials. They didn't disappoint. They even made a special pumpkin cocktail that was creamy and sweet. I loved it, and I HATE creamy and sweet cocktails. The service, however, was inattentive, somewhat condescending, and curt. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt because this is the first time that has happened, and I will definitely be back.

Great Vegan options
Loving the vegan mole. Who new that could be so awesome?!?
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not having much mole to base this experience off of, i'd say it was a good start! We started with guacomole, which was delicious, as well as the kekas. I got tres moles, which was really delicious! The green mole was my favorite. My boyfriend got the ribs, which were also pretty delicious. I'd definitely go back when craving Mexican.

I took my date & we enjoyed
I took my date & we enjoyed the food. However at the end of our dinner, there was a big group next to us. It got loud and killed the quiet mode. Other than that , service is great. Food is excellent.

Authentic Oaxacan food
We absolutely love Oaxaca and have spent a lot of time there. It's nice to have a restaurant in the city that serves close to authentic Oaxacan cuisine. Not only was the food good, but the service was excellent despite how busy it got after 7 p.m. on a Friday night. Love that they have a lot of mezcals as well.

Not usually a mole sauce fan, but LOVED their moles! When we asked about the different moles on the menu, the kitchen brought us a variety to sample as first time visitors to the restaurant. We will go back.

Not your comfort food Tex-Mex
This place was quite good. Their 7 types of mole sauce are definitely their claim to fame. However, if you're craving comfort food Tex-Mex, this isn't the place. Nothing is smothered in cheese and enchilada sauce. It's definitely on the healthier, more authentic Mexican side, which is great, as long as that's what you're looking for.

Pleasant Birthday dinner
We were a group of 5 people here for a birthday dinner. The downstairs is not that big but they were very accomodating. The service was great, drinks were good and the food was pretty tasty. I've had better mexican food but it was worth the money. I'd recommend this restaurant and will visit again if I was in the neighborhood.
