Not ideal for San Franciscans
It is the Wharf; it is meant for tourists - nothing special but once in a while you just have to go to the wharf.
Definitely better than Alioto's. Very polite and friendly staff

I had not been to the Fishermen's
I had not been to the Fishermen's Wharf area for years and so had not seen Fishermen's Grotto in a very long time. Three of us went there for dinner on a weekday and I was dismayed to see the restaurant practically deserted. Dismayed because in its heyday, the Grotto was pretty grand and always crowded. As other reviewers have noted, the restaurant is quite dated, looks pretty rundown and could use an major facelift. Even so, I have to say we really enjoyed our dinner. The food was good, but what made our evening was the tremendous service our waiter gave us. He was entertaining but still professional, attentive but not intrusive. I'm not sure i would go again for dinner, but might stop by for lunch.

The food and service we received
The food and service we received was great. The restaurant itself needed some serious upgrading, but the view made it all worth it. My family and I plan on going back some day.

We were dining during the sunset time. Beautiful view and great seats next to the window and great food is worth the price. Making reservation was helpful so they had a seat ready for us.

We had a wonderful time. the cioppino was so delicious and I could hardly finish it. They also have red clam chowder which I like and is rare to find. The bread was delicious and the house wine was great. View and service couldn't be beat. We are locals and enjoyed it immensely.

We enjoy the older atmosphere of the Grotto. It's been around a long time and like the old time feel. You do have a view of the water, but not the most scenic. You can see the sun set. Lots of windows for viewing. We've gone in groups of 5 - 9 and were very pleased with our service and the food. We loved the fresh dungeness crab with garlic/olive oil. We'll certainly go back.

Lunch at the Grotto
We had a generous crab Louis that was yummy. Loved that they comped us two hours in the parking lot across the street. Great view and very attentive servers. Nice time.

Room with a view
Great food and great view
Historic restaurant. Interior could use updating but that does not take away from the experience

Good place for seafood at the wharf
Was a traditional restaurant, touristy, but the seafood was excellent! Staff friendly and very efficient. Would recommend if you want to Fisherman's Wharf experience and good food.

Our dinner was most delicious . Everything was prepared as ordered. Our waiter did everything to make sure that the selections were complimentary to each persons'. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking a quality meal at a competitive. price. I plan to eat there again on my next visit to SF.

Wedding Anniversary Dinner For Two
My wife and I essentially flew to San Francisco with the intention of coming here for the Dungeness Crab Dinner. We reserved well in advance as our wedding anniversary is July 4th. Fisherman's Grotto did not disappoint. All of the staff were superb with us. The food and entire evening here was flawless. We would do this all again, anytime.

Keeping it old school!
This place is for the more subdue. I don't recommend to bring children (unless they are EXCEPTIONALLY well behaved). It's a very relaxing environment and I can see it being very romantic in the evening (however my mother and I ate here for lunch). Came specifically for the Scallone and my mom was NOT disappointed. Love the old school feel to the place.

I have been coming to this restauramt for over 40 years & have never had a bad meal. I have brought many friends here as well who also enjoy it. I have never had a bad meal here. The service is great as well as the menue & the wine list. If you like New England clam chowder this is the place

Don't miss this Crab Louie!
Whenever our travels take us through San Francisco, a Crab Louie from Fisherman's Grotto is a must. Crisp greens with an amazing amount of fresh crab and the best Louie dressing is not to be missed.

My aunt used to go to Fisherman’s
My aunt used to go to Fisherman’s Grotto #9 when she was first dating her young man, Uncle Tom. It was not yet a restaurant in those days, but a take-away place that offered clam chowder in a hollowed out sourdough bread-bowl. (Auntie is still with us, in her late 80s/early 90s.) So, when I started dating their nephew, Auntie insisted we go to “their” restaurant. I've never had a bad meal or experience. Their crab cioppino is always wonderful, and the view of the harbor is breath-taking.
Maybe the ambience is from Frank Sinatra's era, but that's part of the charm of the place. My husband and I always bring our out-of-town guests here for dinner, and no one's ever been disappointed.
