Excellent Food and Music
My wife and I are currently visiting Washington DC. The other evening we had dinner at Johnny's Half Shell. We sat outside on their covered table area. The rain was coming down. We shared a bottle of wine, listened to the jazz band had an absolutely wonderful dinner. The seafood was uniquely prepared and done very well. I would highly recommend this restaurant. A very nice relaxing place to share a dinner with someone close.

What a great place! This has been a great place to take a client with constant quality.

Excellent Mid-Atlantic Seafood
Enjoyed dinner outside with 3 adults and 4 children. We sampled oysters, soft-shelled crabs, crabcakes and bouillbasse. Good tasting moderate portions. Soft shells were too salty. Otherwise, food was good. Service was attentive, if not warm. Bar scene was active. A good experience in D.C.

Booked based on Washingtonian Mag. Made reservation for Sat via Open Table! All worked out perfect! The Crab cakes for a non Baltimore restaurant were excellent! They had a live jazz band on Saturday night that was absolutely perfect! Go if you can!

The food was superb. We both took waiter recommendations (soft shell crab and catfish w/risotto), and were both extremely pleased with our meals. Great portion size, strong drinks, and an overall great experience. Definitely recommend it! We split an app, got two cocktails each, two entrees, and split a dessert. W/ tip it ran us about $150, definitely worth it for the experience!

Crab cakes are excellent
The Maryland crab cakes are excellent. Service was good at outside seating area.

Patio Fine for Hearing-Challenged
Have been to Johnny's several times, but this was the first time eating on patio. I wear hearing aids and find too much noise upsetting, but the patio was much quieter than I expected and the traffic did not overwhelm conversation. Our party of three had a very gracious and patient waiter, and I want to mention that the buttermilk pie was outstanding!Patio

We love this place, the food
We love this place, the food is always delicous and and the staff are the best in town. They always remember and take the time to come over and say hello. We had a new waitress, can't remember her name, but she was good too.
6/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
The service was outstanding! We had a very personable waiter (John) who was well knowledge and very understanding of the menu items and what best the customer would enjoy. We were seated outside and the weather was gorgeous. On of the highlights that made the evening more enjoyable was the live jazz band! It was a great way to share father's day with my family. It was our first time dining and would love to visit again.

Worth another visit
The food and presentation were excellent and the prices what I would expect in D.C.. Wait staff though pleasant was not on top of things. Had to wait for a water refill and beverage refill. Convenient to the Capitol, Union Station and the Mall.

A good setting to discuss business over lunch or an office outing with attentive service and great crab cakes as mentioned in the Washington Post Food Critic corner.

Great Food/Music & a Cool DC Breeze
We were met with a very pleasant greeting from Jeannene at the reception. We discovered outdoor seating was available and a jazz quartet was playing at no extra charge. The predominately seafood menue was quite nice. My wife ordered crab cakes (of which she still raves) and I the soft shell crabs (2) which were the very best! Our guests were equally pleased with their Crab Imperial and salads. The wine was ordered by the glass and I was truly surprised that many of the more desirable labels were available in this manner. Be sure to say hi to Mary, the evening Manager. We will surely endeavor to repeat this fine dining experiance with our next DC visit.

Classic seafood restaurant
Delicious, classic meal. I had the crab imperial which was very tasty. The fish stew and the crabcakes were good too- but don't miss the grilled squid appetizer. It's probably the beat squid dish I've ever had!!
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
We made reservations online thru Open Table. We arrived a little early and were seated exactly as requested.
Wait staff was outstanding (thanks Mile and Marko). Best filets we have had in a long time
A little pricey but worth it.

I went to Johnnny's because a friend of mine was visiting from NYC and staying in the area at the Hotel George. I wanted a restaurant that was close by (it was hot that day) that had good food. I made a reservation the moring of and was delighted to be able to get one for that evening. When we got there one of the other patrons was rude but the hostesses were very friendly and took us to our table in a matter of minutes. The table was close to another table but we had a lot of privacy. The wait staff was friendly and never rushed us even after we had completed our meal. We were able to have a nice meal and catch up without feeling rushed or intruded upon. I would not hesitate to go back or recommend it to other visitors. Thanks

We have been here twice, both times with friends. Everyone has enjoyed the food a lot, and the service has been just the way we like it: the server is there when needed but does not come by every five minutes to ask "how're we doin'?" Simply delightful place to eat.
6/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
reminds me of home and a great location with wonderful seafood! The guava cake was one of my favorite dishes!

Amazing food, great service!!! This is a local find that is a MUST to visit!!!

Met All Expectations
Nice dinner w/ friends - 5 of us - been there before but not recently. Service was efficient but not intrusive (empty glasses cleared - yay!);food lived up to good memories from before; relaxed but not loud ambience - could easily talk across a 6-top. Thanks, Johhny's!

This was my second time at this hotel and once again I enjoyed myself. They really get it right with their soups and the service is always a pleasure. Will return again.

Outstanding and peaceful
The food was excellent and the drinks great. A very nice meal and a surprisingly quiet getaway on a Friday in DC. Thanks.

The food was great, our waiter John was extremely attentive and knowledgeable. We would definitely go back.

I went with a group of 8 people
I went with a group of 8 people during a conference and we were all very satisfied here. Service was great and food was delicious. One person in our party stated the halibut dish he had was the best he ever had. Portion sizes were also good. It is a little pricy, but this is as expected for the location. I would recommend this restaurant to others.

Delicious & Friendly
We were looking for a good restaurant close to Union Station for a friend who was here for a day visit. This was perfect. Great menu, delicious food and friendly wait staff. We had to eat early, but restaurant was full when we left and bar was hopping.
7/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Took my family here when they visited for the weekend. New Yorkers expect a lot and they were blown away by the food and service. Every dish was great and the oysters were very flavorful and clean. Place is top notch.

Late lunch rendezvous
One of the best lunches I've ever had. Katie is a goddess who should be placed on an angel throne of swan feathers. Oysters tasted like tear drops from heaven. Pure bliss all around, blacked out briefly. Would recommend to anyone that has blood running through their savory veins

Tried Johnnys for 1st time for Restaurant Week - sometimes the special menu is limited for Restaurant Week, but theirs had a number of good choices, it was hard to pick. Clearly the focus is on seafood but I didn't know there would be such a Cajun theme to the food, which we enjoyed. Shrimp and grits and gumbo were fantastic, fish with andouille sausage risotto quite good, my only complaint about my scallops with beets is that the scallops were only SLIGHTLY on the chewy side - only slightly. Desserts were good too, we got the peach cobbler which had a nice citrus touch and real whipped cream (a generous dollop) and the chocolate angel food cake, which I'd never had before, was good, not too sweet and served with a salty caramel sauce.

We were lucky and able to
We were lucky and able to sit outside on one of the few cool days in August. Johnny's Half Shell has a really nice patio area and we enjoyed it. The food was excellent! We come every year during restaurant week for my birthday and have always enjoyed it. Great seafood. Best fried oysters!
8/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was good and service
The food was good and service excellent. Very nice atmosphere. Highly recommend. Only down-side was the etoufee was way too spicey.

Half Shell and Full Service
It was an unusually pleasant August evening so we opted to dine outside. Food was great, service perfect. Will definitely go back!

Great Evening at Johnny's Half Shel
Fanstastic place, from the incredible food (the best crab cake I've ever tasted) to the wonderful service and the ambiance (classic soul music that perfectly complemented the atmosphere).
We will be sure to make this a mandatory stop every time we're in DC.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
The dinner itself was excellent (crab cakes prepared two ways) but the service had a couple of glitches. Ordered dozen oysters on the half shell (they are named "half shell") but received six. Ordered crab cakes for my wife and me and asked for the crab cakes prepared one fried the other broiled. Received only one dinner. The server thought we were sharing the cakes for the one dinner. But she was so apologetic, I and my wife were not put off by the longer wait for the second order to come, If visiting DC again, we will definitely try Johnny's again.

Great location, memorable food
We have dined here before. Service is great, food is great. As you wou ld guess from the name, it excels in seafood. If you are staying in the Capitol Hll area, it's a quick and easy walk.

Fantastic fun place to dine
The food was spectacular with oysters to die for. We had the salmon which had an amazing sauce although if you are concerned with calorie intake --- look out. The gumbo and Maryland clam chowder were both tasty. There is absolutely plenty of flair in the soup bases. Doubtful you could duplicate the favors the chef seems to have a flare for.
There are many dining options - outside, inside, lounge area- all of which have DC charm. Highly recommend you try this place and Saturday's special is a great bottle of wine for 25.00. Not too crowded and the service is on spot.

Came for lunch and got an outside table, which was nice. Service was very attentive and friendly. I got the oyster bake which was very flavorful. My friend got the beet salad, but they were out of the caviar. She accepted a tuna substitute and liked it a lot. I've had their shrimp and grits before, which were very good. I'd like to try the fried oysters next time.

I had dinner for my friend's
I had dinner for my friend's birthday, and we went all out -- oysters on the half shell, three other appizers, a couple of entrees, and a couple of desserts, and all were fantastic. Our server was great, and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. Love it when wait staff have the requisite training and take service seriously and treat it as the profession it is. We had a blast, and everything was delicious.

i visit DC aa couple times a year for business. I have tried new places each time. This was within a couple blocks of my hotel. The location was handy, the food was very good and the service was outstanding . Worth a second visit.

Good food, nice service
Can't go wrong with Johnny's. Everything is pretty good if not great. It's pricey but good.

A sure fire, go-to place
Tasty food, great service, wonderful location-- what more could you ask for?
Satisfies foodies and others alike.

Capital Hill treat
I loved eating on the outdoor patio right in the heart of Capitol Hill. Parking was easy with tons of metered streets around, and you have to try the Manhattan Clam Chowder! Amazing!
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
I had had the salmon on a
I had had the salmon on a bed of sauteed spinach. The salmon was cooked perfectly, but the spinach and sauce was too salty. Chefs should be more aware that too much salt isn't for their customer's health and overpowers the delicate flavor of the basis dish.
The Manhattan clam chowder was excellent.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had a wonderful meal at Johnny's. Grab a dozen oysters and a couple of apps to share between three, then an entree each. I had the filet of catfish, and it was perfect.
10/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice but pricey
We had a great meal and the entrees were excellent. Price point for apps and salads was high.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fully met our needs
A group of four wanted a place to converse and enjoy a good dinner. Johnny's Half Shell filled the bill. The service was unobtrusive and attentive, my friend's cocktail was large, and my dishes were well prepared. I did the double appetizer thing, starting with winter squash salad and moving on to the single crabcake. Both were tasty, and the combo filled me up nicely. Conversation was easy, even with the restaurant quite busy. I'd happily go again for an after-work social occasion.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
my night here
I really enjoyed the food. It's a great place for seafood lovers although it was not a huge dinner menu. the waiter was extremely attentive but knew when not to disturb. very pricey but definitely worth it. great wine list and crab cakes are small but delicious.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Solid But Not Spectabular
Nothing was out of the ordinary for our pre-theatre dinner at Johnny's Half Shell. Nothing was especially superb, but nothing was especially lacking. We had an above average calamari, an above average Oysters backed with butter and Parmesan cheese, a very nice wild Scottish salmon, and an above average seafood cioppino. Like I said, the place was deserving of 4's all around but definitely not 5's. Maybe it was the lighting in the restaurant, maybe it was the bar scene with many young Capitol Hillers, but all in all this was a 4 if ever there was one.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Had an early dinner and thought that the over all experience was good. The wait staff seemed a little slow but not too bad since we had time. The food was good - we got the spinach salad as a starter with the Famous “Trotter Tots” pork tots we'd say that the salad was much tastier than the tots they were just ok. My hubby really liked the Shrimp Creole Etouffée Sauce it was really nice I got the crab cake dinner it was good lots of lump crab meat and the french fries i liked but the cole slaw was very bland. Both desserts we had were pretty good - the chocolate angel food cafe and the sticky toffee cake was also very good I just would have liked the toffee cake to have been warm. Over all it was very good.

Great Seafood and Service
Very enjoyable for a nice relaxed birthday celebration. My wife and son who are seafood fanatics had no complains about service or quality of seafood. The salmon was exquisite and the side order of spinach was the best I have had anywhere.

Great dining experience
The food was absolutely great. We started with gumbo and crabcakes. Both dishes were perfect. The perfection continued thoughout the evening.
