It was a nice atmostphere
It was a nice atmostphere but food wasn't great. Server wasn't knowledgeable about the menu.

charming setting, puppylike service
We chose this restaurant for my mother's 90th birthday celebration. We had a couple of advance requests, which were responded to promptly but often indirectly; it took persistence to nail down the details. The setting was beautiful, comfortable for conversation, the waitstaff extremely friendly and enthusiastic, which helped keep us entertained during the long wait for the main course. A modest request for a substitution, overlooked at first, was then attended to with gracious overcompensation. Food was tasty, containing imaginative elements without being precious. Duck moist and tender, gnocchi enlivened with morels and air-dried bacon. Excellent coffee, rare in an American restaurant.

Mother's Day Brunch
Perfect spot for Mother's Day.
Great food, service, plus we were treated to one of the Harvard
A Cappella Groups as part of the dining experience.
Would definitely recommend and will be back.

Mother's Day Brunch
We went to Upstairs for Brunch on Mother's Day and sat upstairs. The staff were friendly and VERY accommodating when our 4 year old spilled a blueberry smoothie all over one of their banquets. Nothing ruffled their feathers. The food was excellent. I had the Cod and it has a mix of textures and flavors that I'd go back for. The steak was well prepared, but the sides were the real star. One of the best locations around, if you like the old yankee Harvard bustle.

Love the service and the ambience.
Love the service and the ambience. Everything on the menu is good. The lunch selection is a little too limited.

In the Heart of Harvard Square
Always on the best of list, Upstairs on the Square brunch didn't disappoint. Great food - attentive service- fun atmosphere. A hit!

A totally delightful restaurant.
A totally delightful restaurant. Food was so much better and upscale than the restaurant's outward appearance would suggest. Don't get me wrong, the restaurant's design is charming but the elegant food presentation and taste was dramatically good. This is my new favorite (non-ethnic cuisine) restaurant in Cambridge.

We picked the wrong day to
We picked the wrong day to go - it was Harvard graduation, so only a prix fixe menu was available. It was very pricey and the main courses did not meet the price expectations. The chicken pasta had almost no chicken in it but the gazpacho was superb as was the strawberry -rhubarb cobbler. The wine was pricey, too. We will go back, but not right away.

An Absolute Gem
I love Upstairs on the Square. I've been back MANY times and referred so many people iIve lost count. They always come back and say it's their new favorite place.
Each dish is creative, incredibly tasty and beautifully presented. The decor is a conversation piece in itself.
The service is wonderful and Mary Catherine and Deborah (the owners) are incredible hosts that make make you feel like friends at their house party.

We had a nice late dinner
We had a nice late dinner on a Friday night in June in the more casual space, the Monday Club Bar. Fun decorating and many happy diners. The service was a bit slow, but otherwise good. Food was very good. Definitely a fun spot for a memorable meal.

A good place to sit down with
A good place to sit down with friends in a place offering a decent choice of delicious foods and notable wines. Luncheon and brunch is served in the first floor whimsically decorated with Zebra motifs while the second floor is reserved for Dinners in a rather elegant settings.

Loved the breakfast sandwich--good size portion. Really disappointed they didn't have chocolate milk. My husband's brisket was wonderful too. The bread basket was to-die-for. Waitress got way too close when speaking to us.

Wonderful birthday lunch
I had a wonderful lunch with my mom here for my birthday. The food was delicious, the servers so nice, and I love the funky decor. I'll be back.

Dining with Friends
I brought my friend, a world traveler, to Upstairs for the first time, and what she enjoyed most was being able to sit outside. Since the first time I went to Europe, I have always loved being outside, too, and am happy to see that so many restaurants in Cambridge do this. The waiter was very well informed about the menu choices, and that helped because neither of us were familiar with some of the offerings. As a consequence, we tried an a couple of items that neither of us had had before and both were outstanding.
I've been coming to the restaurant for years and this is something I wouldn't do if I weren't happy with any aspect of it. This has always been a pleasurable experience, that's why I keep coming back with family and friends

Great food and tres romantic!
This is really two places: downstairs a vibrant bar and separate eating area for lighter but filling food; also outside on grill nights.
Upstairs a very romantic decor with great food.
Long known as a Harvard Sq gem and rightfully so.

The outdoor grill raises the bar
I've had many enjoyable meals and cocktails at Upstairs, but the grill outside was a whole new level of great. I had brought out of town work colleagues with me who were looking for something local and not stuffy and at the end if the night they all thanked and congratulated me on my selection of the restaurant. One says he wants to make a special trip back just for the corn.
8/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had three different people waiting on us over the course of the evening and every one of them was charming and attentive without being intrusive. It made a good meal into a great meal.

Server was very good and friendly. Food was good, but one of the dishes was no longer warm by the time it came to the table. I would expect better from such a well-respected restaurant.

Such a cute place tucked away in Harvard Square. Love coming here for the food & ambiance.

Check out Lobster Extravaganza
We had a great time during the Lobster Extravaganza hosted by Upstairs on the Square. We had lobster two different ways and both were immaculate. Highly recommended.
8/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Went in to enjoy the special lobster menu. Thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere and the summer special on lobsters offered 4 different ways. The Angry Tater Tots were amazing!! My husband and I had the loster special menu prepared two different ways. The lobsters and the corn were great and I inquired on the side salad-coleslaw. The waitress asked if we were ok without it and she would check not sure if part of menu. Waitress never addressed this again for rest of evening. My daughter had the pizza and wad happy with her choice. We topped the dinner off with dessert which we all devoured!
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food at a very nice
Great food at a very nice bar; we did not eat in the upstairs (fourth floor) restaurant as we prefer the second floor bar. It is a great place to be served food and the food is unbelievably good and elegant.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
The menu situation was a little confusing as it differed from floor to floor. I also made reservation for outside seating but wasn't available when I got there. Great food.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious, fresh, food, always
I always look forward to dining at USATS. The food is deliciously prepared and presented. The other night, four of us went to USATS and each had a different dinner selection. All of the appetizers and entrees ended "plates eaten clean".
We ended with coffee and dessert, a wonderful ending to a very enjoyable night. The Soiree room is so nice to sit in
the whimsy and the service is impeccable. I am always attended to from the entrance to the exit. Very well taken care of.
This is a special gem. With all of the many restaurants in Boston, I get on the red line for a quick trip to USATS and never disappoints.

Great Brunch spot
I've only every been for brunch but it is a great spot to be! Also great for baby showers and bridal showers. And the front room has a nice view onto the square below.

Solid restaurant week meal
Five of us enjoyed a wonderful night at Upstair's on the Square. It was the first time for all of us. The decor is worth it for one, the flavors were great, for two. We really enjoyed all of the options we had. Solid food and wine and good variety for restaurant week. We would go back and try it again on another occasion.
8/27/2013 5:00:00 PM
a nice restaurant week treat
We dined here for the restaurant week menu. We had great service, really enjoyed the table bread and the menu selection. the starters were all great, and the entrees were pretty good. I loved my seared tuna (seasoned to perfection) but the jasmine rice was so-so. Two of us had shortribs for dinner and they were cooked wonderfully but lacked flavor. The desserts were cute and tasty, but nothing outstanding. Might try this place again for the brunch or high tea, but probably not for dinner.

I went for restaurant week.
I went for restaurant week. I was delighted to have it meet me expectations. I can't wait to go back!
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were in Boston dropping our daughter off to college for the first time and someone we met suggested this restaurant. I am so glad I listened to her because this was exactly what I needed for my last night in Boston. There were six of us dining so we were able to try a few different dishes. I have a food allergy and they had no problem accommodating me. The only negative was that 2 people in our party were served their dinner later than everyone else. We were told it was because they ordered the BBQ special and that was made outside. Not sure why that should matter, but it did. Other that that, it was a great evening with good food and good people.

Love the fun decor. We sat outside, though, and it was delightful. Great mushroom pizza and homemade pasta with seafood. Excellent cocktails too.

We celebrated my husband's birthday at Upstairs at The Square on Saturday. The highlight of the experience was the service. The Maitre d' was incredibly gracious and definitely set the tone for a very enjoyable evening. Our servers were also perfect - exceptionally helpful without being smothering. With the exception of the grilled oysters with apple mignonette (which were incredible) the food was well-prepared without being mind-blowing.
The ambiance definitely takes some getting used to - if you have an aversion to Peptol Bismol pink, you may want to be seated on the main floor, not the top floor.
Overall, a great experience - with the staff getting top marks for excellent service.

Fancy date spot for a couple!
My boyfriend and I went there for the afternoon tea.
The afternoon tea sets had around 12 kinds of little bite size sweets and a pot of tea. When we went, we added champagne and it was only $5.
I really liked the decor of the restaurant. Everything was very pink and it had an ambiance of somewhat like Alice in Wonderland.
If you want to try something new, it's a place to go to!
We really like the waitress too. She was energetic and nice.

Sad to say Adieu
We came here for our anniversary dinner and to catch the Squash & Apple seasonal menu they had going on. Our server this time was not as personable as usual but she was very professional and tended to our table the perfect amount. The food was outstanding as usual! I had the Pattipan Squash Salad and Pumpkin Gnocchi and my partner has the Grilled Oysters and the Duck entree. The flavors in the salad gave me goosebumps! We love the atmosphere and decor in Upstairs on the Square. It has a spunky, fun nature, yet still accomplishes an intimate atmosphere in the soiree room. I wish the party room had some sort of opaque wall to prevent camera flashes lighting up the entire soiree room, but it wasn't a big deal. We are sad to see it go!

Great burgers on 2nd floor.
Great burgers on 2nd floor. Limited but varied menu, warm friendly servers and fine food; nicely like Cambridge. I liked the grilled shrimp appetizer a lot.

Special Place in the Square
Upstairs is a neighborhood staple for anyone familiar with the Harvard square area. Great food with an eccentric atmosphere and decor. It's a fun place to go on a date.
10/25/2013 5:00:00 PM
My wife and I ate here last weekend and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. I had the duck and she had the salmon. Both were absolutely wonderful -- fine dining at its best. We ate in the third-floor room, very elegant. The service was excellent, too. We were there for an anniversary dinner, and I think we picked the best place in Harvard Square!
10/25/2013 5:00:00 PM
Too bad its over
Just found out that Upstairs is closing as of December 31st. A true Harvard Square icon. Get there while you can. It's still a great place to stop when shopping in Harvard Square. The staff is particularly friendly. It's like saying good-bye to an old friend.
10/26/2013 5:00:00 PM
after having lunch there, I heard they are closing after the first of the year. what a shame, one of the few consistantly good restaurants in Harvard sq.

Unique and Delicious!
We visited for Sunday brunch. The brunch menu is very unique, delicious and reasonably priced. The decor is fun, tasteful and inviting. The porch area is open and airy. Nice to have the bar within the same space as the dining room.
We enjoyed a special treat - The Harvard Krokodiloes performed a few numbers right in the dining room. They were amazing!
All 4 of us each ordered a different dish and all were exceptional, as was the service.
It was our first visit and we were disappointed to learn that they'll be closing at the end of the year.
We hope to see "Upstairs On the Square" reopen in a new location with the same fine features, quality and ambiance.
A delightful experience!

I'm actually very sad this place will be closing. The food was delicious and I love the servers.

The Last Hurrah
Upstairs on the Square will be closing at the end of the year. It will be the end of an era for an iconic Harvard Square restaurant. But before it goes, one can thoroughly enjoy the eclectic color schemes and nicely prepared food, including sumptuous desserts. Always a fun place for lunch, and its front-of-the-house proprietor, Mary-Catherine, makes everyone feel welcome and part of an illustrious cast of characters who have dined there over the years. Don't miss it before it goes!

A Perfect Date Night
My partner and I received a gift certificate to Upstairs on the Square from WMBR as contributors to their pledge drive. While dinner here would ordinarily be beyond our price range, we seized the opportunity to see how the other half lives, dressed to kill, and decided to give it a shot. We were not disappointed. I've been working in and around Harvard Square for years and never realized that this place had so much space. It was a bit disorienting, but the host staff led us quickly to our table (three floors above the coat check at ground level--what??) only a few minutes past our reservation time. While taking in all of the lavishly beautiful scenery, I must say the food and cocktails stole the show.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
So sorry you are going..
I have had so many wonderful moments in your elegant and delicious space…thank you for wonderful food and gracious dining that will be long remembered. All the best to you in the next chapter. Jane and Ursula

Brunch meets Alice in Wonderland.
Brunch meets Alice in Wonderland. Will be very sad to see this deliciously imaginative place close. Glad I was able to go one last time.

A sad farewell
Upstairs on the Square is one of the best restaurants in the area--superb food and wonderful atmosphere. So it's devastating to know that it will closing on New Year's Eve. People who love it will miss it terribly. The other night, I had the "cowboy" steak--an absolutely scrumptious rib-eye that was one of the best steak dinners I've had in a long time. And the lobster pizza was a perfect appetizer. There's something really sad about the closing of a restauant that one loves. Upstairs will be greatly missed.

It is such a shame that this
It is such a shame that this gem has to close at then end of this year. It really is an outstanding restaurant. We also had a wonderful friendly waiter which really made the meal fabulous!

We're sorry this neighborhood
We're sorry this neighborhood restaurant is closing after the first of he year. It's a very nice place to go for any meal. We took out of town friends and they loved it.
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
The turkey and "fixings", which is, after all what ones come for on Thanksgiving, were fine overall. The turkey was excellent, and the sides were fine too. I would rate the appetizers and salad were disappointing, though: nothing at all special or outstanding about them, nor creative at all. Ditto for the desserts.
The restaurant was cold -- every time someone came in,m there was a draft from the door. The waitstaff was VERY responsive and moved us to a table out of the draft. However, I noticed, that "Upstairs" has an interior door to the vestibule and that was left open ! and I do not understand why they did not take advantage of that vestibule door to retain heat in the dining area.
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
If you're wondering if the food is still good, given that this is their last couple of weeks, the answer is yes. We had the five course tasting menu and it was great.
