This was my first time at Cognac and I was very pleased. Food was excellent and prepared just the way I requested. Service was
excellent. My server was friendly and came to the table several times to ask how everything was. I liked the atmosphere and it was not noisy. I will definitely return and recommend Cognac to friends.

True french restaurant
Amazing. And I'm picky.
Took my French wife and mother-in-law here and they couldn't believe how authentic it was. "It tastes like food back home" they said.
They didn't have the wine we wanted so they upgraded us to a better bottle at no additional charge.
Only complaint is that it took awhile for the bill...though I suppose that is authentically French too.

Excellent charcuterie. Crispy
Excellent charcuterie. Crispy calamari. Very good frites. Pot-au-feu very good, fork tender, just big enough a portion. Pousse-cafe dessert option just right -- small glass of cognac, two tasty cookies, and a cup of coffee.

Went for brunch on Easter. They had a special brunch but the regular brunch menu was prixfix and was very good. The waiter was excellent and very accommadating. Would definately return.

Too loud and service could always use more polish, though this visit was better than usual.

Great drinks, wonderful food
Great drinks, wonderful food (those scallops were fabulous), and gracious, friendly service. Waiter had excellent wine suggestions and was extremely helpful with the menu and with helping us choose that amazing dessert (chocolate shell with coconut sorbet)
All six of us loved it- 4 of us were entertaining 2 from out of town and we all had a great time.

It is always a pleasure when a place meets your expectation to be well-fed and well-cared for when you decide to go out for a meal. I recommend this place to anyone looking for taste and comfort.

Very reliable stand-by for a fine meal. Service a little less than great--wait staff hard to flag down when needed

A repeat visit and still satisfied
We all love the ambiance and food at this lovely restaurant. Staff most pleasant and helpful. My guest enjoyed their meals and drinks - all perfectly served. Will return again soon.

Wonderful place in a great location
This is a wonderful restaurant with great wine-by-the-glass, an excellent chef, and a menu I never get tired of, with surprises all the time. The French wine is reasonably priced and delicious, the fondu is great fun with friends, and the chef makes the best souffle this side of Paris. Go!!
4/24/2013 4:00:00 PM
Enjoyed sitting outdoors on
Enjoyed sitting outdoors on an early Spring Saturday evening and having Broadway more or less to ourselves for a few hours - little vehicular traffic and none of the crazy chaos of Times Square. Food was good, basic, classic Brasserie fare. This spot has become a go-to option for us for Carnegie Hall and City Center events. Will definitely keep going back...
4/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
A regular go to for lunch
Its a good place to go for business lunch that is a few steps above a diner and not terribly expensive. Their burgers are great.

VERY GOOD RESTAURANT. HAVE EATEN HERE 4 TIMES THIS MONTH
5/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Enjoyed the crab meat and avocado appetizer at brunch. The chicken terrine appetizer was less successful. Followed with a hamburger that was very good though cooked more toward medium than the medium rare I ordered. The lemon ricotta pancakes got strong reviews. Very good service. Nice cozy French brasserie atmosphere. Seemed good for pre-theater too.

A wonderful find
While the restaurant is a little bit of a walk for the theatre district, it is well worth the hike. It has a lovely warm interior and a smiling reception that honored our resevation immediately. The service was friendly and fast, but not too fast. The food was wonderful. Delicious Lobster, the most amazing Asparagus and dessert, well , I will leave that to your imagination.
Add all that up and you would think so would hike the price. You would be wrong. As someone whose job forces me to eat out a lot and particularly in the theatre district, I can say without doubt that this is one of the most priceworthy places around. To call it "cheap or moderate" would be insulting. The price, like everything else is well worth the sanpling.

Always a good pick
This is my "go to" spot for a lunch in Midtown West. It is easy to get too, the food is consistently good, service is always professional and it is very reasonably priced, while offering many traditional French Bistro offerings. It is also good for casual dinner, especially if you are going to the theatre or a concert at one the many closely located venues. As long as you are not expecting a really "high end" dining atmosphere (which would cost much more in Midtown Manhattan) you will not be disappointed.

Delicious breakfast but ......
We have only been here for breakfast, but love the Eggs Benedict which are served with potatoes and a small salad. Each time we eat there service is a problem and this time we were the first customers on a Sunday morning, and it was difficult to get a coffee refill, more cream for the coffee, or get the check, and get it back after giving the credit card; it is like the customer is an afterthought, and they have more important things to attend to. Nevertheless, it is convenient to where we stay, good food, and not cheap, but not over the top expensive either, and we will return. I guess it is a French thing and we American's are in just too big a hurry for them.

Comfortable Local Venue
This is a midtown spot. It's French bistro style. Small outside seating area when the weather permits. The menu has good variety, very solid. Tasty items. Nice for lunch and dinner (haven't tried breakfast, but they have it). Wine-by-the-glass selection is mid-level, very good, reasonably priced. Members of my family enjoy going there as a neighborhood venue (we live nearby). It attracts some tourists (Broadway @ W55th), but this is not a significant negative in our experience.
6/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
I always enjoy dining at Brasserie Cognac, centrally located in the theater district of New York and a stone's throw from Lincoln Center and great shopping on 57th Street. I always imagine I'm in Paris, an illusion that is not dispelled by the cuisine or the atmosphere. In short, a real find.

Welcome to the upper east side
I shall gush. I adore this restaurant. I adore the one on the west side and now I can adore this.
The neighborhood needs this kind of a great brasserie, and so do I.
Now I don't have to go to Balthazar for splendid french friend and mussels.
The waiter was a pro, and so is the manager and the gal at the desk.
This is my new favorite restaurant, and I didn't have one until now.
The only bad thing about my writing this glowing review is that the place will be mobbed....but so what.
I want all to share.
6/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a girl as our server this time and she was terrible but was not representative of the great service we had 3 nights in a row from a nice man and another woman who was nice. The girl this night did not listen, messed up on the order because of inattentiveness, was rude twice to my wife then failed to bring my change as I had to call the man to do so. He asked if there was a problem and I said yes then he was rude to me also. He had not been there the previous 3 evenings. I guess this was the "BAD" night to be there.. a Sunday.
7/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first time dining at Brasserie Cognac. Our waiter was very kind, personable and food savvy. We were delighted with his food recommendations and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We will gladly return on a future trip into NYC.
7/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
This place is perfect for City Center--and they sure get you out on time!
7/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Brasserie Cognac can always be relied on for great food and friendly service. It's close to Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Time Warner building, City Center and some Broadway theaters so it's a great spot for a pre-show dinner or post-show drink and dessert.
7/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
A great mid-town find. Excellent brunch menu, tho not inexpensive. Worth every penny! Also great for late night dinner and drinks. Go after a Carnegie concert. Tables are not Too close, but if you get a loud neighbor, it can be noisy.

Theatre District Fine Dining
Not a tourist trap. Less than 10 minute walk to Jersey Boys. Not cheap but affordable. I had the cassoulet and it was very good and a generous portion. The service was attentive and friendly.

Cognac does a great at traditional middle-class bistro food. We had great brandade, salads, gougeres, etc. We'll be back.

Great Meal on Saturday in September
We had a wonderful visit on a warm September night. The French doors to the outside were open and it was nice sitting indoors but with the ambiance of being outdoors. Food and service was very good, prices normal for NYC. The restaurant was a convenient short walk from the mid-town Hilton hotel.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
excellent midtown dining experience
I've been to Brasserie Cognac three times and the food every time has been of excellent quality. The service is attentive and the maitre d' and the servers are all personable and make you feel very welcome. Always a good choice!

Very professional manager, he made sure our experience went well. Nice to know that we had our time to chat and drink without being given rushed.
Food was good as well

We found this restaurant when our favorite pre-Opera restaurant was not open. A good substitute and a good meal. We were able to walk to the Metropolitan Opera (ten blocks up town). Could also walk to theatre down town.

Close to Carnegie Hall
Great place for an early dinner before Carnegie Hall.

Begining to end an excellent meal. Good service, outstanding food in a relaxed environment at reasonable prices.
A rarity in New York
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Reserved for brunch. Although our order was inadvertently given to the table next to us, when we were served, it was excellent. They also responded with an additional brunch drink. We sat for some time chatting and rec'd multiple refills on beverages. The decor was comfortable French country - just right for Sunday brunch.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great place for pre-theater dining!
This place has everything -- great entrees, a big enough list of appetizers and small plates that it's hard to get to the entrees, and a nice pre-theater prixe fixe that is reasonable and includes standard menu items, not extra, less attractive food. The selection of wines by the glass is excellent, and those wines can be purchased by the bottle at reasonable rates. Don't forget to treat yourself and order a souffle in the near future, they are the best!! I also appreciate that they give Carnegie Hall Members a discount.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Restaurant is a welcome addition to a neighborhood that seems to be heavy-Italian. We always seem to take people who have not been prior and they always rave about the food. Definitely a go-to local spot. Food quality stays sytong the restaurant should flourish. Strong crowd.
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
We were stuck on a horrible traffic jam and couldn't make our 6 p.m. reservation before an 8 p.m. concert at Carnegie Hall. We arrived at 7:20. The waiters pushed our food order thru, served us and got us out in half an hour in time for us to get to Carnegie on time. The food was great - as usual - and the service was beyond accommodating.
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
We were looking for somewhere to have an early dinner following a Sunday matinee that got out at 3:30 that was neither very fancy nor just a pub. This fit the bill. The restaurant was not too noisy and the food was quite good. I had the roasted chicken which was terrific. My companion wanted the steak and eggs but it was unavailable so he had a burger. The spinach and avocado salad and the tuna tartare was shared and was very good as well. The experience was very positive and I would go back.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
Picked this restaurant based on location to meet friends for dinner. Three of the four were delighted with their entree choices. The four said "good but nothing to write home about" service was very good, nice wine selection and good wine recommendation by our waiter.
We will be back and will recommend to others.

Very lively buzzy friendly place. Good food that is sensibly priced, as was the wine list. Will definitely return.

Our first visit to Brasserie
Our first visit to Brasserie Cognac and we enjoyed it very much. We ended up arriving a bit earlier than our booking time but were seated straight away. The food and wine was very nice, particularly the cassoulet and the Cotes Du Nuit, just what was needed on a cold November evening. The service was attentive and we didn't feel at all rushed to leave at the end of our meal, just simply allowed to enjoy the last vestiges of our wine. We shall definitely return.

convenient and solid food
convenient and solid food as we left the letterman show and needed to grab a good quick dinner

Very good value for a pre-theatre dinner. Prefer menu items as oppose to the Prix Fixe. Good wine by the glass. Cheese puffs are delicious!

Great location, menu & service!
Been here twice, for brunch & light dinners before theatre & both times quite pleased with food & drink offerings, service & overall ambiance. Not inexpensive but discount for Manhattan Club travelers made it more reasonable for us, plus so convenient & outdoor seating during seasonable months makes it all the more likely we will return. Recommend to others too.
