At the level of Japanese standards
You will find at Sushi of Gari the same atmosphere and good tastes of Japan, that I visited quite often. I really recommend. It is better to make a reservation as this restaurant is very busy.

3rd time at Sushi of Gari
3rd time at Sushi of Gari and always great! Only negative was that they were unable to figure out how to use our visa gift card and we have never had a problem in the past with other restaurants.

Looks like your neighborhood
Looks like your neighborhood sushi joint but one of the best places around. Tell them your aversions or allergies and say omakase and et them handle the rest.

Omakase is spectacular! We
Omakase is spectacular! We plan on returning to try other specialties from the menu. Go for the food, not the ambiance and don' t be shocked by the price.

The Best Sushi in New York. Warm & Friendly Staff that welcomes you into their home. I look forward to my return. The Green Tea here is amazing. The sushi rice is some of the best I have found in the city. You will not be disappointed in anyway by your visit.

Pricey, because we ordered
Pricey, because we ordered the chef's special sushi creations, but worth every penny! I have never tasted better sushi, and neither has my niece who is half Japanese and goes to Japan regularly.
4/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
and I quote, "best sushi, hands down." The place is not cheap, but when the bill comes you know exactly what you paid for.

Lived up to our lofty expectations
We have been talking about going here for years. This place did not disappoint….sure it's expensive, but it was worth it.
5/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
I've been meaning to come here for forever - it didn't disappoint. Expensive but well worth it. Really great experience.

Although the chef's tasting
Although the chef's tasting menu was tempting, we stayed with hand rolls and cut rolls - which were absolutely wonderful. Seared salmon was everyone's least favorite, but everyone really liked the scallop, tempura shrimp, spicy shrimp, and I enjoyed the smelt roe roll. We also ordered a few starters - which were tasty, but very tiny: spinach with sesame was about one spoonful. There seemed to be a thriving take-out business and the quality of the food was so good that we decided it would be worth it, next time we're bringing in Japanese.

Food fantastic, ambience so so
The food is dedicated. I ate 13 sushi, including 1 roll. After that, I felt full. I chose to seat at the sushi bar, then I can see chefs making my sushi. They were very busy, merely talked, except introducing the sushi. There was a girl seated next two seat to me, she was noisy, keep asking her mother a lot of question loudly.

At $420 (including tax + tip)
At $420 (including tax + tip) for the standard Omakase sushi-menu (plus one additional round) and three alcoholic beverages, I thought Sushi of Gari was an interesting experience for my girlfriend's birthday (her request). The service was impeccable and friendly. The sushi was delectable -- like nothing else I have ever tasted. The restaurant is a little cramped, however. I think I would have preferred to sit at the bar. Also, it would have been nice if the bill was 10% less.
6/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
The sushi concoctions were so simple yet downright delicious! the marriage between western and japanese was perfect. fresh seared salmon and cream cheese atop sushi rice? holy smokes it was good. i especially loved the eel and avocado pairing, and the uni was the creamiest roe i've ever tasted!!! that said, it IS expensive for just sushi and i will only return if i'm flush with cash!

Don't understand the poorer
Don't understand the poorer reviews. The omakase was exceptional; filling, creative and beautifully presented. The rice was sublime. This is my second time in 3 years at this location and it is among the best sushi meals I've had anywhere.
6/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
Innovative, fun, a bit over the top
Freshness and quality are abundantly apparent with every piece of fish brought to the table. My friend and I did the omikase (not knowing exactly how the final bill would look). Every morsel was expertly prepared and presented (although I found the amount of rice a bit overwhelming. A mere quibble).
I enjoyed the tako -- soft, full of flavor, and not too salty. The bluefish (yuck! bluefish!) was really tasty, with no oiliness. The mackerel was the best. I never order dessert at a sushi bar, but my guest wanted the caramelized banana thingy and the green tea cake. Both were really excellent.
Two people, 6 beers, 2 omikase, 2 desserts. Including tip and tax: $550. That's a Lexus payment. But worth returning.

Must do the tasting menu!
Sushi like I've never tasted before

Order the omakase
Best sushi we've ever had. I was visiting NYC, and we are comparing this with sushi in San Francisco. We had the omakase, which I highly recommend. We've never had such fresh mackerel: no fishiness, and much umami. The uni was as sweet and fresh as it ever gets. Nice selection of premium sake. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Sushi of Gari
Great sushi experience. I'm not a big roll lover, so I stick with sushi. It can get a little boring. Sushi of Gari mixes up the treatment of each piece in very novel ways. Plus the food kept coming quickly. Nice spot tucked in the neighborhood.

Quality Fish, Talented Chefs
The chefs at Sushi of Gari are highly skilled and serve up an array of savory, well balanced bites resulting in a satisfying and diverse dining experience. I'd recommend ordering the chef's choice, but if you do, come hungry! The portions may appear to be small but the plates just keep coming.
The only drawback is that you'll be ruined for california rolls forever!
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
ruins you for other sushi
Ordered omakase. Each bite was a piece of heaven where the final bite was the completion.

A Truly Memorable Meal
This was up there with Sushi Yasuda, it is on the other end of the spectrum, at Yasuda you get classical offering, but at Gari you imaginative and inventive sushi. Neither is better than the other. I'd steer clear though from their most popular item, nigiri with salmon, tomato and cheese, the flavors overwhelmed the fish.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing quality, excellent service from everybody, a feast for the pallate.

The sushi is outstanding.
The sushi is outstanding. Absolutely one of the very best in NYC. It more than makes up for very cramped space, and little in the way of ambiance.
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
First time trying Sushi of Gari and it is my new favorite. Got 11 great pieces for around 80 a person
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Don't bother with ordering a la carte, go for the omakase. Gari will surprise your taste buds with the most amazing flavor combinations in each bite. I can eat here every night and never tire of it. Worth every penny spent! Every bite was followe by a resounding mmmm mmmm mmmmm. Yes, this place is THAT good. So fresh, so creative and so memorable you'll be thinking about it the next day and probably the rest of the week.

what a treat
we had not heard of Gari until an "in the know" friend gave us gift certificates and suggested we use them for the Omakase menu. We did, to celebrate a special anniversary and were not disappointed. Freshest and most delicious sashimi and sushi we've ever eaten outside Japan. Also the most expensive by multiples. Be prepared - or make sure someone else is paying. Try the excellent pumpkin tempura as a dessert, it was perfectly cooked and just sweet enough to cap off the meal.

Best Sushi in NYC
I've traveled to japan a few years back, but Sushi of Gari is still the BEST sushi I've ever had. Make sure you ask the waitress for the most popular sushi pieces, or the chef's selection. This is was made the eating experience so enjoyable. If you just order sushi off the menu you might not understand why I loved it so much. Fresh fish, delicious and complex taste, and beautiful presentation. Warm and friendly waitresses and waiters as well.

Wonderful 1st Anniversary Dinner
We love Sushi of Gari and they were very nice to put us at the sushi counter even though there were initially no openings. Thank you, Gari!!

If you REALLY like EXPENSIVE sushi
Four of us went to Gari at the pleading of one of our sushi-crazy friends, and we're fully prepared for the sticker shock. Actually, it's difficult to say sticker shock when there is no sticker price! If you order the "highly recommended" Omakase, be ready to drop $160+. You have to ask for menus. The staff did seem a bit irritated that all four of us did not go for it. Don't get me wrong, the Omakase that he got was absolutely beautiful, creative, delicious, and fresh. But $175 for 14 pieces of sushi? The rest of us got either the standard sushi platter or individual pieces which were superb, priced appropriate for where we were, and equally fresh and delicious. Atmosphere is business like, plain, not at all romantic.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you only love traditional japanese sushi this place might not be what you want, although they do have it. The creativity is genius and original, I know they've been around for years and its still hard to find place that are willing to take sushi to the next level. The flavors work well together and not overpowering. I would say the price is a bit much, but thanks to Michelin they can pull it off. The michelin guide is legendary lol
I didn't get the best service and was confused a few times but overrall I loved it and left me inspired as a chef

Had the tasting menu was fantastic
Had the tasting menu was fantastic . Server was friendly and informative . Presentation beautiful
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
I had great expectations due to the amount of friend recommendations. We ordered hot sake and the Osomake menu, which consists of one small entrance and a lot of nigiris (the individual pieces of sushi with a small portion of rise with fish or other on top of it). Here is the catch: you can either tell the sushi-connoiseur waiter the type of food you like or you can let the chef surprise you with a custom made menu that varies according to what you drink or what he infers you like. The food was unbelievable
Ambiance is good, upper east-upscale without the unbearable personality of the in crowd, tables are very close to one another (at least in the upper east restaurant) so I wouldn´t recommend it for private conversations.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Unusual combinations. Most are delicious, but one or two don't, such as using a jalapeno-based sauce on hamachi, a fish with delicate flavor that is overpowered by the spicy pepper. Quality of fish is very high. Presentations are beautiful. Omakase dinner is timed so there is no rush.

Exquisite Sushi in the UES
on a side street off York ave sits this quaint Sushi restaurant. High-quality fish in simple presentation. You come for the food and you will not leave disappointed.

Amazingly creative sushi
We had the tasting menu and it was out of this world. The chefs used traditional Japanese techniques with western ingredients creating innovative but very subtle flavor combinations. The foie gras was the best I've ever had! For dessert we ordered the crepes with chocolate which were delicious. Overall a great experience and worth every penny.
