I eat out on client lunches often, and found high-end Chinese challenging in many places or, at least, not really higher-end. Here it is was very-good and compelled cross-tasting to verify. All was very-well. The Duck varieties are great.

A Royal Good Time
Shun Lee Palace continues to be the royal residence for Chinese cuisine at its finest. A varied and contemporary menu (that also devotes a section on the old time favorites from the 1950s), attentive but unobtrusive service and a beautifully appointed space all contribute to a memorable New York experience.

Old standard still delivers.
Plentiful, hot and interesting food. Attentive service. Still a great place.

Venerable but excellent Chinese,
Venerable but excellent Chinese, a stronghold of traditional "New York" Chinese food, yet at least as "authentic" as the finer places I've been in Hong Kong. Very good Peking duck, dumplings, shrimp in garlic sauce, ma po tofu, and seasonal specials. Good decor, fine service. I go every time I am in the city.

Classic NY Chinese restaurant.
Classic NY Chinese restaurant. So few of these remaining. Food was well prepared and very tasty. Extensive menu. We chose mostly from the daily specials. A bit pricey, but well worth the trip.

After not dining at Shun Lee
After not dining at Shun Lee for several years, we tried it again on May 16. The Szechuan bouillabaisse, crispy prawns with xo sauce, and crispy scallops in oyster sauce were fantastic. Service was impeccable and prices very reasonable.

Shun Lee is still one of the
Shun Lee is still one of the most reliably high quality Chinese restaurants in the City. This is not the fiery, exciting high wire act that once characterized the uber-competitive Szechuan and Hunan restaurant scene in Cambridge, and still does in San Francisco. And NYC deserves no less. Nonetheless, SLP delivers consistently good food and dignified service in a comfortable setting that has aged well. Very few New York City restaurants that were performing at this level in the 1980s are even open today; fewer have never faltered and perform at the same level today as they did 30 years ago. For that precious few (e.g., La Grenouille, Orso, Le Bernardin, Gotham), we should be thankful and appreciative. Shun Lee is one of them.

Service, food, and atmosphere
This is one of my favorites for an evening that is always a winner.

always our first dinner in NYC
We always return to Shun Lee for our first dinner in NYC. The food is fabulous, the service perfect and though it is pricey, it is just a GREAT restaurant! For over 35 years it has been our go to place! The shredded beef is so good you cannot feel guilty eating it!

One of the Best
When in town, Shun Lee Palace has become a Sunday night family tradition. Excellent food and always excellent service.

good Asian/Chinese food!
We use the "hot and sour soup" test to see if the chinese/asian restaurant is good ot not. Well the hot and soup soup was delicious served in a footed mini-soup tureen, bit more than a cup but less than a bowl. It was perfect with the combination of the mushrooms and the consistency of the base which isn't too think or watered down..The skewered chicken appy was good too. The crispy beef was delicious with the julienned carrots and so is the buddists delight- everything was fresh and of good quality. Mistakenly filled our Pellegrino sparking water with tap water but rectified it so swiftly... no problem with that either. Good old world charm to show visitors next time!

One of our favorites and with restaurant week prices hard to resist.

Pricey but good
The portions are big with the price to match. Bring the family to split the bill and share the food family style.

Great Chinese Food!
I went to Shun Lee as a part of Restaurant Week. I made a reservation, however, they didn't seat us right away (note: we were only a party of 2). However, the captain and server were both very polite, friendly and humorous . The food was amazing! Definitely worth the trip.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Too long between servings
The food was excellent. We had starters followed by Beijing Duck, but after this course we started to fidget because the main course took so long. We should have ended the meal with the duck because by the time the main course arrived we were no longer hungry.
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and service
This was the absolute best Chinese food I have ever tasted. Every entree was delicious. My family thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience!

Food and the service was good.
Food and the service was good. The menu is pricy, so I don't know that I would go there if it weren't for restaurant week.

We love this place and celebrate
We love this place and celebrate our wedding anniversary here every year for the past 18 years. Everything is just wonderful. I can't say a bad word about anything. Just love it.
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
The best Chinese food anywhere! If you want an outstanding dinner, start with appetizers of chicken soong and soft shell crab, and then dine on their superb chicken in black bean sauce, grand Marnier prawns, filet with cellophane noodles ( they call it Ants Climb on Tree) and their perfectly cooked Beijing Duck. A trip to Shun Lee is well worth a ticket to New York.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our family has been going to Shun Lee Palace for many years. We''ve never had a bad meal or bad service there. The food is wonderful, and they prepare it however you like. It is always our first night restaurant when we are in NYC. It's never frantic, and we feel relaxed and at home here. We always leave with a smile on our face.

25 years of going to Shun Lee's
I go to Shun Lees every time I visit NY and have always had a great meal. The service is excellent as well. I have referred it to numerous friends who have also said they enjoyed it.

An old star continues to shine
The emenu cocnsists of the expected, but also has dishes that can be found no where else such as grilled scallops.
Every dish is superb and one could eat here every day without getting bored.

GREAT THROUGH THE AGES
AN EXCELLENT RESTAURANT IN THE SIXTIES AND IT HASN'T LOST ITS CHARM. THE KITCHEN IS FIRST RATE AND THE AMBIENCE AND SERVICE LIFE UP TO ITS REPUTATION.
9/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Perfect, as always
The Bejing Duck was wonderful, the skin crisp and thin, the meat lean and tender and tasty, the service impeccable, the other dishes wonderful as well. It's an experience you can count on to always be the finest. My only problem was that there was so much else I wanted to order, but the waiter told us that two dishes after the duck was more than enough for three people. He was right, of course, but even if there had been leftovers, I would have enjoyed having more.

I have been going to shun Lee Palace since I was a child, with intervals of years between visits. The Peking Duck was done to that perfect degree of crispness, but I would have preferred a few more scallions or a little something wrapped in with it. Everything else we ordered was very good, but not knock your socks off. The head waiters still wear suits, which makes it seem like you are dealing with some Chinese officials and is an appreciated, old-line touch. It is probably a good idea to let them know you are not in a rush so they don't pile on everything you have ordered at once. Also, don't be shy about not having them serve you the entire dish at once. Good cocktails. I will be eating there more frequently.
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have never been disappointed with the the service or the the food.

Very well prepared Chinese food; not your typical Chinese menu. But expensive.

Shun Lee Palace
The very best Chinese restaurant in New York City. Our favorite for over thirty years.

Outstanding dining experience
The chef is at the top of his game, I felt as if I were back in Hong Kong. Superb cuisine, extremely attentive and courteous waitstaff, beautiful dining room with classic detail - china, silver and linen napkins. An outstanding dining experience.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
I love lunch and dinner at Shun Lee. i was surprised this time to find that there were very very few selections for my vegetarian guest. I was somewhat embarrassed. Betty
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not your average Chinese.
No joke, the place is pricy. And if you're looking for the usual beef with broccoli type of fare, this isn't it. Food is more upscale than average Chinese place --- and it's delicious! Walters are very attentive (almost too attentive). And the booths are very private with their extra high backs.

Elegant & excellent as always
S.L.P. made our visit with some guests from London a memorable one, with an astute eye and fine food.

Service a little off with confusion over some dishes. Decor a little tired. Bring Adam Tihany back to refresh the decor!!! Love this place and want it to go another 20 years but they need to renovate.

Old and still great
If you love Chinese, Shun Lee Palace is one of the older and more elegant places to visit for more traditional fair. Food is great and the service is exceptional. They won't pressure you to order and allow you to have long breaks if you like between courses and before or after the meal begins. You definitely don't feel rushed and can enjoy your company.

An Old Reliable
We have been eating at Shun Lee Palace for many, many years. This time, we went with my brother and sister-in-law. He calls this "expense account Chinese food". I think he means that the prices are fairly sporting. I, however, feel strongly that the quality of the ambience, service, and (most importantly) the food justifies the expense. We have never been less than delighted with our meal - and the overall experience. We plan to keep coming back for years to come.
