inventive and delicious. very unique flavors.
BUT....astoundingly small portions.

Inventive veggie cooking
My boyfriend and I are not vegetarians, but we really enjoyed this all-veggie restaurant! Most veggie restaurants are defined by what they don't have in the food, or by the fake meat that kind of, sort of, is supposed to taste like meat (but the texture is never right). This place doesn't have anything fake - they just show what vegetables are capable of in much more inventive ways than I've seen anywhere else. You won't miss the meat. All dishes can be made to accommodate vegans, too.

Sublime & Not Inexpensive
Plan far ahead for a reservation at this tiny place. Walk-ins: maybe in 2 hours. Don't expect to eat here on a budget. 3 of us had 3 appetizers, 2 entrees & 3 desserts, plus 2 1/2 glasses of wine. Total tab was $160. Hush puppies were a must snack for my husband, who always leaves here hungry. Avoid the 1/2 glasses of wine - barely 3 sips. Best apps: fennel soup & the onion dish. I could have re-ordered the onion for my main it was so good. Parsnip pillow entree was like sweet, airy gnocchi - sublime! Corn entree was also yummy. Nanaimo bar dessert was the best, though the rosemary cotton candy that comes with eggplant dessert is an outstanding surprise. Share everything!

Best hole in the wall I've seen!
This place is tiny! I would've walked right by if my boyfriend hadn't been there before and knew where we were going. There's space for 10-12 people I think, which makes it hard to get a table (we reserved 6 weeks in advance). Funnily enough though, they will take walk-ins if they can fit them in between reservations. Overall, while I'm not sure it was entirely worth the wait (maybe the build up was just too much for it to meet my heightened expectations), the food was delicious, staff was friendly, easygoing and fairly attentive for a small staff in a small restaurant. Is a bit too pricey for my taste (plus, I'm happily not vegetarian, so I couldn't make it a habit), but I recommend giving it a try!

delicious, delicate, subtle...
We arrived early for our 8:15 reservation & were seated promptly. The waitstaff was helpful & accommodating, allowing us to sample 2 wines before choosing one. The food was everything I'd hoped: delicious, delicate, subtle, intricate, & flawlessly presented. I can't recall the last time I'd eaten that slowly - savoring each bite. (I generally avoid fried foods, but I didn't even notice the "everything is fried" aspect that some folks have ~complained about.) We saved room for a shared desert (Ice Cream Nanaimo bar), & it was my date's favorite part of the meal; an avid & adamant carnivore, she was appropriately blown away by the entire meal. I will definitely be taking a foodie-friend in October. Wonderful! Thank you, Amanda!

I'm not a vegetarian
Absolutely delicious... We had one of all but one thing on the menus between the 4 of us..... favorite dessert was the popcorn pudding.... Broccoli hot dog is a cool concept and very well done... The mushroom mousse was fabulous as well... I'd love to go again... Make sure to reserve like a month ahead.... Seats go quickly... so much fun!

Amanda Cohen does amazing and beautiful things with vegetables, and she and her staff are super nice.

Love your veg
This was an incredible treat. Managed to get a relatively last-minute reservation for last seating of the night and was absolutely worth it. It's a place with a great sense of humor and warmth and basically you taste the love for vegetables (plus fungi). :) Completely delicious, creative, fun, and super-great to go to a "safe" place (for vegetarians) that is about awesome food and celebrating vegetables and not taking itself too seriously. Highly recommended.

Really great experience overall.
Really great experience overall. The food was delicious and our waitress was helpful and knowledgable about each of the dishes. If it weren't for the 3 month in advance reservation I'd go back all the time!
7/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best vegetarian restaurant I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot, as I'm vegetarian - and have been for the last 8 years. The food was a knock-out! The chef has an awesome cookbook too, which we bought after the incredible dinner and desert.

More passion from these veggie concoctions than the other 99%. A must stop on any vegiterian's quest for edible adventure.

The food is inventive and delicious. Too bad the space is so cramped and uncomfortable. The chairs were uncomfortable and the waitress kept stepping on my feet.
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday after waiting months to get a reservation. Intimate, great service, great food. He's not a vegetarian but loved everything he tried. Our favorite dishes were Corn and the mint chocolate ice cream bar.

An amazing take on vegetarian
An amazing take on vegetarian cuisine by elevating the vegetables to centerstage. I'd recommend this place to any omnivore! I'd recommend reserving in advance, it's a tiny restaurant so walk-ins are not guaranteed especially during peak dinner hours.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not just for veggies
Really well executed dishes, not everything is for everyone but there is nothing too challenging on the menu.
It's a small and cute space, menu and chef :)
I would strongly recommend the beans, the broccoli dog and out of the starters we thought the cabbage was the winner.
We were too full for dessert, this time.
I don't think you need the Hush Puppies to start the meal, the bread is great and enough.
8/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great vegetarian restaurant!
The service and food at Dirt Candy were great! The waitress knew the menu well and described the food perfectly as it came to our table. The food was really tasty, fresh and unique. I got the Beans! and tomato tart appetizer and loved both. My brother had the Broccoli! and Cabbage which were both full of flavor. Definitely a small, quiet place so better for a smaller party - there may have only been one 4 top in the restaurant but worth a visit whether you're a vegetarian or not!

Taking Vegetables to a new level
Never knew you can make vegetables taste so good and look so beautiful on a plate. Appetizers and dessert were fabulous. We shared 3 appetizers and they were all so yummy that next time I may order appetizers only. The parsnip pillows were good but nothing that special. The popcorn pudding was outstanding.
Would definitely come again...have to eat my veggies.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious- lived up to expectations
We had reservations for months for our anniversary dinner and were pleasantly surprised when the restaurant actually lived up to and beat our expectations!! They made all out courses dairy free for me and our waitress was super attentive and enthusiastic. We ordered almost everything on the menu and the bill wasn't expensive! Loved it and can't wait for another special occasion to go back. Still dreaming about the corn and egg dish and my cucumber soup...nom nom nom.
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Scrumptious, innovative, filling
Even the appetizers are quite filling because each dish is actually several variations on a vegetable theme and its accompaniment. Hush puppiy snack plus two appetizers, one entree and two desserts was way too much for the two of us who eat like birds...
The chef is not afraid of frying or sweetening so just because it's vegetables doesn't mean it won't fill you up.
Portabella mushroom appetizer is scrumptious. Like a pate de foie gras without the guilt.
Cucumber soup was a deep cool cucumber taste with even colder and explosive tastes at the bottom of the dish. Divine.
Skip the sweet pea icecream if you want sweet. Go straight for the frothy sweet corn pudding with caramel corn topping!
Friendly, very efficient service but not rushed.
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
order everything on the menu
the hushpuppies were sublime as was the rosemary infused cotton candy that came with the tiramisu Also loved the cucumber soup and the parsnip pillows.

Great concept and delivery. Enjoyed thoroughly and would recommend without reservation.

Hot vegan date night
Jalapeño hush puppies. Everything just got better from there. Great food and wine. Crazy dessert. Left happy
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is excellent, and the portions are an appropriate size as to not feel too full at the end. The background music is very low, almost non-existant, which is nice for conversation. Very friendly waitress.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Beautifully presented dishes that were as delicious as they were creative. Everything was a playful and intense version of the food we have all had in far less creative ways. In particular, the mushroom and the tomato appetizers were explosions of flavor. Entrees continued the exploration of the ways one can move vegetables around to challenge our ideas of plant based meals. The desserts were less interesting, although all were good.

Hidden Gen - for real
The food was just fantastic. Real attention paid to each dish and with all the touches of flavor and correct preparation this meal was exemplary. Small in space but large in personality. The servers are warm, friendly and more than your ordinary NYC restaurant. It's worth a visit, 2,3 or 4.
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
exellent food - bad coffee
The food was very good and intereresting. The most well prepared I've had in New York. The dessert were a bit too veggie-influenced for my taste, however well done. The coffee was so weak it looked like tea. Horrible. When I pointed this out to the waitress she just told me to let it steep a bit longer (frensh press), wich off course didn't help nince the problem where the amount off ground. A really bad ending (I need my coffee) to an otherwise very nice experience.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Well worth a visit
Even though there is no meat on the menu, I dare any meat eater to not like it. Very creative, delicious. The place is very small and the seating is quite close and tight, reservations are almost mandatory. Service was very good, and they do a great job explaining each dish. The owner may be you server too!
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lovely dining experience
For people who appreciate creative and excellent vegetarian food and don't mind small spaces. We ordered 2 apps; a tomato feta tart (fab!) and hush puppies (good), 2 entrees; one of which was a tofu with beans and black rice cakes that was so good that I would order it again, and a dish of parsnip pillows which was good but I liked the tofu dish better. The dessert was this crazy combination of sea salt caramel pudding with popcorn that was super great.

Took 2 months to get in and was well worth the wait! Cannot wait to go back! Excellent menu and service!
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were both really impressed at the chefs ability to transform vegetables into incredible meals!
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
I was excited to get in at the last minute as the reservations book up 2 months in advance (when they make them available). It is a very small restaurant with few tables and about 4 vegetarian choices under each menu section...with 2 of each section available to be offered in a vegan version...which is my fare if choice. My dining partner is not vegetarian but enjoyed her meal as much as I did. Definitely give this restaurant a go if you have the opportunity!

Parsnip Pillows by any other name
This is a HIP vegetarian and I think Vegan restaurant and they appeal to all ages, but you have to make a reservation
at least 6 weeks in advance thru Open Table. I am amazed it is THAT popular, because I mean it's FOOD and .....but
people seem to want to dine there. I liked what i had, especialy the first course of various mushrooms. ThE Parsnip Pillos
are really GNOCCI in my opinion-light, flully and a little goes a long way The eggplant dessert was clever-the menu is
inovative and creative but there is a limit to my tolerance for vegetarian cusine that strives to be 'different." My dining
partner wanted to go there and she is a vegie...and young. I am old and crabby abut I was able
to hear .
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Totally worth the wait - reservations two months in advance. I can't wait to go back.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amanda Cohen deserves every bit of praise she receives. Our meal was fantastic and nothing short of miraculous how great the food was coming out of that tiny kitchen. I loved every single thing we tried, but am still dreaming about the tomato tart, mushroom pate, and smoked broccoli dogs. Can't wait to return and would recommend to anyone, where you think you love your veggies or not.
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Chef and her team do an amazing job from start to finish. Every detail is important and monitored closely and it shows in the food, flavors/textures, presentation and experience. We would all do well to dine at this quaint restaurant, perhaps in spite of the fact that it can be characterized as being on the "road less traveled".
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have had the privilege of eating great food across the globe but it's rare that we get to eat food from another planet. Thumbs up.

Tasty & Healthy Candy
Our party of four love the Aurumm menu. Must come back for the orher seasonal menu. Some of the dishes have very deep flavors. Hmmm...good. I felt satisfied and not stuffed. Leaving the table, I felt like this is what good meals should be -- feeling healthy and good about myself.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Creative and fresh vegetarian fare perfectly prepared by an all female kitchen lead by their fearless leader, Amanda Cohen.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
I can't believe how they can transform vegetables in such amazing food. Genious!
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is wonderful, service is impeccable and the wines were perfect for the cuisine. The owner is informative and lively. Go here and rethink what your perception of veggies are!

Creative vegetarian eats
This place is quaint so a reservation is HIGHLY recommended. Be sure to arrive on time because your seats will be reassigned before you know it! I am not a vegetarian, but I was treating my vegetarian guest to a birthday dinner. With that said, the plates were very interesting and flavorful. As a disclaimer, it is best to anticipate ordering more than one plate. This place changed my perception of what it means to eat vegetarian. (Vegan versions are also available) Its definitely worth trying

Most inventive vegetarian food
Finally got a Friday night table (booked 6 weeks in advance). Warmly greeted on arrival and seated promptly. It is a tiny space but the staff did an excellent job of maneuvering.
Ordered the hushpuppies and the mushroom! to start. The maple butter with hush puppies was amazing and the mushroom mousse was surprisingly complex. For entrees had corn! and beans!. The grits and poached egg in the corn dish were velvety and delicious. The fried beans on top of and below the poached tofu were tasty and inventive. Didn't order dessert. All of their wines are available by the half or whole glass or the bottle, solid range of choices and server was happy to provide guidance. I just wish they had more seats so I could go more often.

Vego / Vegan Fantasyland
It's a tiny restaurant in the village that deserves a great reputation for all types of eaters. It's vegetarian with most dishes able to be converted to vegan. Meat lovers get into the broccoli hotdog flavours and the jalapeno hush puppies are a winning touch. The maple butter is delicious! Book well in advance online to secure a table. We booked almost two months in advance.

Everything was great
Excellent service, wonderful food, interesting and unique wine list, yummy desserts. Husband and I enjoyed it. I am a vegetarian; he is not. We both left happy. The portobello appetizer blew me away! Reasonably priced, too, considering the level of food and in a NYC location. We spent $140 and had 4.5 glasses of wine, appetizers, entrees, desert and coffee.

1st time here
It took a while to get a table reserved, but worth the wait. Celebrated my friend's 40rh anniversary of vegetarianism. There were only 4 entrees but I liked mine and my friend's choices. I'm a little afraid of spice and some options had,a little bite. Wine was great, dessert very nice. a wonderful, special evening. Service was knowledgeable and put up with my friend's stories cheerfully.

Best meal of the year....
We love this restaurant but WOW, they're hitting on all cylinders now. All 4 dishes were inventive and wine selections perfect. We observed how well the staff handle tricky situations: a patron spilled her red wine onto her companion. The waiter jumped into action- she blotted up the spill, then the chef came out and helped the person with the stained garments blot the spill. Ms. Spilled-upon said, "It's all gone, its not going to be a stain." Then came another glass of wine. In less than 10 minutes all had passed. These patrons went on to enjoy what they'd come for - good food & wine with no stress. These pros had made it all possible with their no-drama competence. You're in generous and loving hands when you come to this civilized place.

This was one of the best meals I have ever had. From the food to the staff. I had a 5 star dining experience. We were a party of 2 and had the poppers (divine), the Spinach (the flakiest pastry and I am rethinking spinach), the corn (best grits outside of South Carolina), the beets (I don't know how to describe this. It was an explosion of flavors) and the celery (candies grapes!) I will dream about this meal for years to come. The staff was friendly and knowledgable. We even met the chef. I wish I hadn't had to wait two months to get in but it was well worth the wait.

The level of ambition, care and excitement is unsurpassed for "vegetarian cuisine". We are dedicated carnivores and found plenty to be excited and satisfied about. Broccoli dogs!
