Our party of four were there
Our party of four were there to celebrate a birthday. We had drinks at the bar while waiting for everyone. The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent, both the presentation, the taste and the quantities. The appetizer was a little slow coming out. The wine price seemed a little high.
Overall experience was very good.

Easter brunch was tasty at
Easter brunch was tasty at Ironhorse! My husband and I often eat at Ironhorse for special occasions, but had never done brunch here. It was very tasty, the buffet was kept fresh and had delicious high quality dishes. The menu was not overly extensive, but very well done.

Great with room for improvement
The Ironhorse is always a fun outing for a special occasion. We had two different steak dinners which were both excellent. Great care was taken in the kitchen to prepare the meal. The staff was very attentive and on top of things for service.
My suggestions for the menu would be to carry a standard or signature beef option (filet, strip, sirloin) instead or in addition to the rotating entre. The menu is custom but I like a go-to standard steak every so often. The wine list is fun but it would be nice to have some the recent wino favorites (Caymus, Silver Oak, etc.) Better bread would be good thing also.

I liked the convience of obtaining a reservation online. The Ironhorse has a great location in Ashland. Good parking off the street in the rear of the establishment. Perfect for anniverseries or date night. Try the specials, take your time and leave room for dessert. The portion sizes are generous and cooked to your specifications.
Very good experience all around. My entire family had a good time.

Great local spot!
We've been to the Ironhorse many times and love it! For this visit, we brought my brother, who was visiting from San Diego. He's very well-traveled and dines out A LOT!! He was SO impressed with the restaurant, esp. the extensive wine list! The Ironhorse is now on his list of Richmond-area favorites!

Worth Driving to Ashland
We are normally city diners if we want to try the next best thing. We live equidistant to the city and Ashland, so it's about a 15-20 minute drive for us to get to Ashland's historic town where Ironhorse is located. We used the Open Table app to get a reservation at 6:45, and arrived slightly after that. They took us to our table, which was located at the back part of the fine dining area. While it was not bustling when we arrived at that time, the scene quickly filled with couples and families. The train went by during dinner, which was so fun to see and the food was wonderful. I had the marinated skirt steak, an iceberg salad (house-made dressing was fantastic) and pork morsels fried in duck fat - so indulgent and good. We'll be back!

A welcome diversion on I95
Good food and ambience is possible when traveling on I 95. A short diversion to the Ironhorse and you will find both.

Loved sitting outside and watching the trains roll through town. Our guests really enjoyed the evening. We go to the Ironhorse three to four times a year. The food is always changing and always good. The bar is very nice too.

Enjoy the Food and the View
Great place to get a wonderful meal while watching the trains roll through. Been going there for years and the food is consistently delicious and the staff is friendly and attentive. It's a true "Gem" in Hanover!

Ironhorse -Ashland, VA
We made reservations for Mother's Day Brunch after stopping by and having a great afternoon bite several months before. I like the restaurant being next to the railroad tracks, the outside tables and overall ambience. The menu food is very good but I was overall disappointed with the brunch selection for what they charged. On the buffet was sausage/bacon, scrambled eggs, cheesy grits, greens and green beans, waffles and chipped beef (I think) already spooned on toast. A carving table with beef (very good) and ham. Oysters on the half shell and spiced, chilled shrimp. A fruit table with melon and cantaloupes. All for $30.00. However, by 1230 they had run out of the soup, deserts and there was no bread/rolls offered.

Saturday night finest
Was pleasantly surprised when our group of 4 was able to secure a last-minute reservation for Saturday night. The dinner menu was concise, but all dishes were excellent! I ordered the sesame chicken which was lightly pan-seared, giving the skin a nice taste. My husband had the steak - cooked to his liking, sliced, and served with mashed potatoes. Our friends ordered the pork and salmon respectfully. Each plate was presented beautifully, with a nice size serving for the price. One down side - the wine list appeared to be by the bottle, leaving us unsure of by-the-glass prices. In retrospect, we should've ordered a bottle for the table. When we return, we'll try lunch for a different menu and vibe.

Dependable neighborhood dining
I've eaten here many times over the past 8 - 10 years and I've only had one meal in all that time that wasn't at least very good, and most were excellent. On this visit I had the Rainbow Trout and it was very good. The service was also very good. The only disappointment was the limited wine selection. There is an excellent wine/beer store at the end of the block. I would think they could work out a "Featured Wine" idea with the wine/beer store that would benefit both establishments. Other than that the Amtrak came by right on time and also a freight train. So we had a very good meal and some visual entertainment.

Great fish specials and local produce!
Feta cheese outstanding!

What a gem of a restaurant we discovered in Ashland! We frequently travel the I95 corridor & make stops along the way. We will definitely return to the Ironhorse! The food was delicious and well prepared. We had the flat iron steak and the brined pork loin as main courses; both were excellent. The fried green tomato appetizer is worth a drive back to Virginia (we live in NJ). Our waiter was charming and efficient.

Good spot in Center of the Universe
The Town of Ashland bills itself as "The Center of the Universe." The staff at Ironhorse try their best to make you feel special and that YOU are the center of their universe. We had lunch on an extremely hot day - tomato gazpacho, salads and sandwiches for two of us, and shrimp & grits for the 3rd. All were very good and the service was outstanding - attentive, personable. This is one of my local favorites and never disappoints.
7/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you like a bit of history this is a great place. Situated in historic Ashland right near the train station you can sit outside and have Amtrak and CSX rumble by 20 yards from your table. If that is too noisy for you (I liked if), inside is much quieter, but you can still enjoy the sense of watching the last century roll by. The food was good, but not memorable. The wait staff was very nice. I would and will go again.

" I like this place"
Of a party of 5, there were two repeaters and three new. As expected, the seating was comfortable, food was great WITH an attentive waiter. I overheard one person say " I like this place" at least three times. That is exactly why there will be 5 repeaters NEXT time. Come as you are and be comfortable !

We go to Ironhorse a couple of times a month. The food is always creative and excellently prepared. Service is outstanding - friendly and helpful. Wine list is good but could be expanded. We always feel welcome here.

Took a chance since I had never been there before. Brought a good friend and my wife for an evening meal and had a great time. Service was outstanding, food was great, and the atmosphere was convivial. A little loud for my taste (it was Saturday night) but have experienced a lot worse. Great experience overall.

Doesn't matter what it is or how crazy it sounds, these guys are the masters of exotic flavor pairings.

Mixed feelings about this place
This was our third time eating at his restaurant. We've recently purchased a home in the area and are trying out different restaurants in the area. This time, the noise inside (primarily from the stacking and handling of dishes) was almost overwhelming in the dining room that we asked to be seated outside. The table was fine, but the heavy smoking from the table next to us took away from the ambiance. As for the food, we did enjoy the items we finally got. My first choice, an evening special, ran out right before my order was placed. It was a bit surprising that they would run out so soon on a Saturday night, especially when our reservation was at 7 PM. However, the stuffed pork loin was quite tasty, although a bit overdone.

Outstanding restaurant and a perfec
If you love trains this is the place for you. If you are into an evening outing for a great dinner this is the place for you too. What's not to love about the Ironhorse Retaurant. It combines the ambience and charm of great dining with the lore of trains which frequently pass by directly in front of the the restaurant --- and is an awesome feauture. The trout stuffed with crab was out of this workd delicious and the special steak dinner on the menu was equally as enjoyable. The sides and other dressings on our plate just made this a dining experience to remember. Can't wait to go back. Thhs restaurant has become a favorite and is only a very short drive to Richmond.

Celebrate a Night with Your Student
We made reservations at the Iron Horse as it looked to be a nice restaurant within easy walking distance of Randolph Macon College. The menu is a bit pricy but we ordered several appetizers and just one main dish and had a wonderful meal. The vegetarian options were a bit limited but the squash entree was amazing! The pumpkin soup was a bit of a disappointment as it needed salt or just more flavor. The wine list was expansive. The Argentinian Malbec I ordered was reasonably price and lovely. While waiting for our food we sampled the fresh bread and a cheese appetizer, which were both very tasty.

Loved eating a romantic birthday dinner here! Right next to the train tracks, it was fun to see the trains cruise by while we dined. The food was excellent, as was the service! I would definitely recommend this restaurant!

We had a wonderful evening at Ironhorse. It was a busy night, but we never felt as if our meal was taking too long. The service, from Will, was outstanding. Highly recommend Ironhorse.

The Iron Horse Restaurant in Ashland, VA brings back childhood memories of a quaint, picturesque, friendly railroad town. I had a delicious lunch with a friend. The potato and garlic soup was divine. The first words from our waiter was 'welcome back.' Because I had made a reservation on Open Table, he knew that I had previously been to the restaurant.
After our wonderful lunch, we went across the tracks to some shops (traffic stops for you when you are ready to cross the street). A delightful day!

A Foodie's Delight
Great place for a relaxed and delectable dining experience. Fried oysters were a little bland, but the Rainbow Trout, was really bursting with flavor. I would love to have the recipe for the sweet and sour kale that accompanied the entree. It was scrumptious! There's no kids menu, but the bar menu offered our 10 year old a choice of barbecued wings and fries, so she was happy. They really don't do anything special for birthdays, either. Overall, the food and our server were great. The server was very attentive and pleasant. We will definitely be back when the weather is warmer to enjoy the trains going by, while we dine outdoors.
