The potato flatbread with apricot jam and cream is incredible!

I was incredibly excited to dine at Tartine after having heard so much about their baked goods, I wanted to find out what meal by them would be like. The online menus looks amazing, and they certainly lived up to expectation. I dined with a friend who has a few food allergies and the restaurant went out of their way to make sure those restrictions were accommodated - even to the point of providing a non-menu dessert that she could eat.
The restaurant itself was just beautiful - a perfect space to dine in. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and more than willing to come forward with suggestions when asked. Only one dish did not meet expectations because of over seasoning. I could not have asked for more or left any happier than I did.

Different but YUMMY
Great for groups ordering a bunch of small plates and brunch is amazing. Our service was a bit slowed due to computer system outages, but once we were seated the service was fantastic--knowledgeable staff--and the food was really interesting, unique, and delicious. Nice to see something other than burrata, thin crust pizza, avocado, and truffles on a menu in SF!

Unique spot, don't miss!
Great spot, wonderful service, delicious food. Order a variety of dishes to share. Do not miss the dessert!

Everything was fresh and beautifully presented. The bread the best!

We had been looking forward to trying Bar Tartine for some time now (we live outside the bay area) so we eagerly anticipated this first visit. We were not disappointed. The food was extraordinary. I particularly loved the green chili fish stew but the quail paprikas were fantastic as well. Everything we ate was creatively conceived and executed. The most outstanding dish was the cucumber sorbet with lemon and yogurt and burnt bread. I'm not a big dessert person but I had to try it and it was as if someone created an end to a meal with me in mind--it was savory and salty and a little sweet and just perfection. I can't wait to return for a second visit.

The bread was worth the dough.
All the small plates and mini sandwiches were very tasty. Our server was very helpful and informative. But,the take out loaf was out of this world. The next day we had some at every meal, except when we went out for dinner, where I overheard my son inlaw say "I have some more bread in the car that we're taking home. Should I go get it?" Duh.

The whole meal was great from
The whole meal was great from start to finish. The bread with seaweed butter, however, changed my life. I loved it!..The simple things.

We ordered almost every offering and all were good/great but the simplest country loaf with butter provided the pinnacle experience. Service was very good as well. It was an added bonus to see Chad completing the last loaves and offer advice to a querying guest about baking non-rubbery rye bread.

Full of surprises!
Imagine grandma's food from Eastern Europe, exploding into the 21st Century. We enjoyed 15 tasting courses from the Family and Friends menu, and each showed real purpose and style. From 3 types of salmon to mushroom tartare to match the steak tartare, there were amazing textures and flavors, in a modern but earthy presentation. Super fresh ingredients and bright combinations made this a memorable experience.

Creative menu. Assorted salmon
Creative menu. Assorted salmon appetizer is divine as was the beef tartare. Fisherman's stew was quite good as well. Wine list would benefit from expanding a little.

Creative and delicious
Creative, interesting, sometimes unusual food combinations, work well together. Bread is definitely fabulous-as well is should be!
Staff attentive, pleasant, surroundings very attractive yet homey.

My only criticism: The tasting
My only criticism: The tasting menu is too much food for two! Make sure to order it with a party of at least three people or more.

My partner and I went to Bar Tartine for our birthday brunch. We had heard good things about it and it did not disappoint. It was a relaxed atmosphere with friendly, attentive wait staff, and delicious food and drink. Highly recommended!
9/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
where am i?
the delicious fare has caused a rift in our dining party, we're not sure where the inspiration for this cuisine comes from. i think it's mostly eastern european, as are many of the great wines on the eclectic and not-too-long list. my date maintained that there are a lot of latin influences as well. aside from the name of the restaurant being a romance language word, i'm just not getting it. but i'll happily be back at some point to continue my research...
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great inventive food
Food is very creative robust and flavorful don't let what's written on the menu deter you from eating it. I wish they had more tasty desserts, sad they ate now charging for the bread!! Not good to charge for bread that should come free with your meal!
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderful, innovative, interesting
We went for an anniversary celebration. Choosing is the hard part -- the dishes are simultaneously unusual and fascinating, so they need some explanation (which the waiter is happy to provide). The food was, indeed, outstanding. Also a good wine list, with some nice 'regional' wines to go with the eastern european roots, and some great beers also. p.s. save room for dessert!
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
I'm pretty sure the tasting menu here is the best dining value in SF, at $62/person. It is properly called a "friends and family" menu, since the word "tasting" would seriously understate the size of the menu's portions. But don't think that this is a quantity-over-quality experience. Nick Balla and Courtney Burns serve up one ingenious dish after another, many finding their inspiration in Central and Eastern European cuisine. Standouts include the best pickled beets and beef tartare (on Koji toast) you will ever eat, smoked potatoes that put Benton's bacon to shame, a farmer's cheese dumpling that is so light it almost floats off of your plate, and a dessert rye porridge that will make you forget every other savory dessert you've had.

Fantastic for brunch
Had been here for lunch and dinner a couple of times and wasn't overly impressed, but I'm very glad we gave this place another try for brunch. The food was excellent! We'd heard raves about the potato flatbread, and it was very good, but for me the star was the pork loin open-faced sandwich. My only tiny regret was not passing on the chocolate buttercream open-faced sandwich; I was afraid it would basically be Nutella, and it was certainly delicious, but nothing novel.
The service was initially a bit slow and the restaurant was running a really loud dishwasher or some other machine that made it very hard to hear for a while. It was the kind of white noise you don't really notice until it's mercifully turned off.

One of the best restaurants we have dined in in a long time. Friendly knowledgable staff guided us through the menu. The chef does a remarkable job bringing out the flavors with various fresh vegetables and herbs. I think it is one of the top five restaurants I have dined at in the past five years.
9/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Much Better Than Expectations
For some reason, I thought the food would be unapproachable. Not so, and the waitress not only stopped us from over-ordering (altho' now I need to go back to try the famed flatbread), but dealt kindly w/a gluten intolerant member of our party (more than the usual pain in the ___ in a temple of bread!). Unusual and delicious sauces on the pork meatballs & shellfish stew); the best kale salad ever; & the smoked potatoes really are to die for. Crowded, but could still have a conversation. And, of course, that bread! Would return in a minute.
9/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was by far one of my the best meals that I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. My partner and I ordered the tasting menu, which I highly recommend. The menu has so many options that we thought it was best to leave the choosing up to the chef.
The service was impeccable - friendly but not overbearing.
The wine's were amazing as well. We tasted wines from Croatia and Bulgaria!
Highly recommend - 5 stars!

Bar Tartine is a really remarkable
Bar Tartine is a really remarkable restaurant. Each dish I had challenged my palate which is great. However, it's not a meal I'm dying to repeat in the next couple of months. It was in part a mental exercise, seeing how far we can push cuisine.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Full of surprises
When we looked at the menu we were a little stumped by it. There was nothing resembling an actual meal. Instead, a hodge-podge of (mostly meatless) appetizers. As a party of four we ordered about 9 selections, and we were all pleasantly surprised by everything. The biggest downside was that we felt very rushed --one or two dishes brought out at a time, and the next set in quick succession. For the amount of food we ordered a little more time would have been appreciated. (We also felt rushed through the ordering process.) This is definitely a hot spot, and it was very good, but I'm not sure that we would be too eager to go back.
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
What a combination of flavors.
Bar Tartine has some of the most unique flavors I have every tasted. Enjoyed an anniversary dinner there and was amazed with the dishes we ordered. Very difficult to decide because everything was so unique.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
We decided to dine her on a Sunday night for our friend's birthday. Our friend enjoys a great dining experience but can be picky especially when portions and service do not justify price. We ordered a number of dishes of which the standouts were the assorted pickles, potato flatbread, beef tartar and smoked potatoes with ramp mayonnaise. Service was polite and casual, maybe a little awkward and off pace at times. The atmosphere is beautifully lit with a lull of music in the background, quiet enough to have a conversation at a normal voice level. We really enjoyed the food and left full and content without feeling like we had over indulged or over paid. Most importantly our picky friend was very happy. We will definitely be back!

Fantastic - exceeded expectations
Really great innovative food. Had an awesome time.

The food was amazing, we ordered 8 dishes and they were all unique and yummy, there was not a less-than-stellar dish in the lot! The service was also excellent. I cant wait to come back!

Wonderful food, friendly service
I had a great time at bar Tartine. I had heard a lot about it and had huge expectations and they definitely lived up to them. The food was sublime and surprisingly exciting. The wine program was fun. Can't wait to be back in SF and go back

This menu jus definitely fit
This menu jus definitely fit for foodies, a very interesting and creative combination of flavors. Something to try
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and service. Was concerned about tapas like plates. For 2 people 4 plates good with enough room for dessert.
10/29/2013 5:00:00 PM
We had the tasting menu and it couldn't have been better. The variety of flavors was superb. We are experienced foodies who have eaten at Michelin 3 star restaurants and many others around the world and there were new experiences for us here. The ambience could be a little more softer and comfortable for me, but by no means bad and not a detractor.
The Root vegetable ‘gulyas’ with marrow crouton was UNsane. So delicious.
If you are about new tastes and variety, go here.

Great ambience + interesting menu
The atmosphere is casual yet refined and enjoyable. The menu is unique and interesting. The food was well prepared and left us perfectly satisfied.

Food was tasty, the dessert was sophisticated.
Get the BBQ potatoes
I'm surprised and a little disappointed that the bread was served cold.

Tasting menu Sunday dinner
Overall very good dinner. Some dishes were outstanding and quite surprising given the simplicity of the ingredients (e.g. smoked potatoes). There was a large number of items in the tasting menu, and it was quite a bit of food. Not sure if there was a rationale in the order of the dishes, but it was quite heavy toward the end, we could not really finish (or savor) much of it. The savory portion was overall fantastic, but the two desserts were quite disappointing. They were not on par with the exuberance of the black cod or even simpler savory dishes (gai lan broth). Overall, wonderful food, and the servers were knowledgeable, personable, and charming. Good wine selection and price range.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
We love the cafe and have their cook books. So, when we heard about Bar Tartine, we had to try it. The food is nothing you've seen before and tastes amazing (and we've been to a lot of restaurants around the world). The service was also great and we will definitely go back. We tried the tasting menu and everything on it impressed. One warning for that option is to come hungry! If you want something lighter, try a selection off the a la carte menu. You should be happy.
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent Food and Dining
Bar Tartine exceeded my expectations. I had two friends who are foodies visiting me and desired a restaurant that could provide fresh California ingredients with creativity. Bar Tartine did just that.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Palate enlightening w/poor service
The food was excellent, my party of four tasted several dishes- including an amazing trout pate, cheese ball and mushrooms and beef tar tar. While under the new American umbrella it was not the traditional fare for the better. The restaurant looked good for a large group and a romantic dinner. It is great for exploring a new take on an old cuisine. My reference to service is that our waitress was visibly annoyed with us- kept approaching and then very abruptly taking off, didn't want to provide much in the way of recommendations and it definitely lessened how much we enjoyed the meal. Not the ideal for a $100pp birthday dinner. I wouldn't let it stop you from eating there just hope she's gone on to a profession she finds more enjoyable.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
fresh, pure and unique
Bar tartine features a fresh, seasonal, unique menu along with some nice beverage selections. Friendly and good service as well. Portions were described as generous but definitely not the case. Overall this place is slightly pricey but worth a visit for unique dishes.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
I was so impressed with the food. I had the kale and after 3 days I am still reminiscing!! I would definitely recommend and return the next time I am in town.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Amazingly interesting dinner
The one word description of this place is "interesting" (in the most positive way possible). The menu is short, with only a few options each night. And rarely will you find anything recognizable. The descriptions are filled with words I don't know and ingredients I wouldn't normally try. But we ordered several items (pretty much at random) and were not disappointed by anything.
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
Love this place
Great food, lots of vegetarian choices, super service. Couldn't be better. If you haven't been, you're missing something.

Did not disappoint!
Delicious, simple heartland food with a twist. A brunch must-do!
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Our party of 3 from out-of-town went for dinner on a Sunday night and we opted for the friends-and-family menu, which was a ten-course degustation. It was excellent value and I really loved a few dishes I probably wouldn't have ordered off the menu - the blood sausage and the potatoes smoked in black garlic. The dessert were simple, but complex in flavors. Down-to-earth and attentive service rounded everything out! Well done Bar Tartine.

Top-Notch SF Restaurant
Bar Tartine is one of the best restaurants in San Francisco for a few key reasons:
1. They keep the menu small and execute each item flawlessly (even the most critical foodie would agree)
2. There is hardly any signage on the exterior - somewhat under the radar, which allows it to maintain the neighborhood feel
3. The staff is friendly and well trained - can give great suggestions and add to the experience
There is much to do and see in this great city, but Bar Tartine is not a restaurant you should miss!

Food is always so understated and spectacular at the same time. Never fails to impress.

Very well done.
Delicious and exciting cuisine. Our waitress was efficient fun and knowledgable. Can't wait to return.

With a good friend in town for the weekend and wanting both incredible food and a warm, inviting atmosphere I knew that Bar Tartine would deliver just that.
The wine complimented the food and the kefir butter disappeared in mere minutes. There is no doubt in my mind that I would highly recommend a meal here, especially dinner, as well as more than gladly return.
