Nice service. They had a little bit of difficulty with some new staff, so we ended up waiting longer than usual. In the end we got our dinner and received a couple of free deserts. All the food was amazing.

The food was so unique, every bite was tantilzing and amazing. Lots of flavor and texture in the food. Absolutely wonderful.

Amazing food and atmosphere
This was our first time at Takashi. We ordered the chef's 7 course Omakase tasting menu. Everything was amazing, and some of the dishes were pure magic. The washugyu beef tataki was pure bliss. The soba gnocchi literally melted in our mouths. The the egg and pistachio macaron was perfect. Perfectly portioned, presented and tasted better than any desert we have ever had.
We were there late and chef Takashi stopped by our table to see how were enjoyed everything. He was very nice.
Our only gripe was the music. There were several songs in the play list that were simply horrible... if they had been just in the background we could have ignored them. They were quiet enough to talk over but still too loud to ignore.

Great from Start to Finish
I had been wanting to try Takashi and some friends recommended it for a birthday we were celebrating. We had the omakase menu. Tasting menu is an apt term in the sense that it introduced us to new flavors and presentations, starting with an egg custard amuse with truffle and asparagus (make sure to smash and then mix the wasabi), but it also is a misnomer because the portions were more than tasting and we were quite satiated by the end of the meal. We enjoyed every single course, but disagreed about which was the best with beef, duck and dessert being our choices. Wines were excellent, the list was manageable and prices were not outrageous. The rooms are small so you are close to other diners, but for us, that enhanced the experience.

Get the scallops!!!
You must order the scallops with house-made gnocchi...INCREDIBLE! Server was very attentive and friendly, we had a wonderful dining experience at Takashi!

Best. Meal. Ever.
One of the most memorable meals that I've enjoyed with my daughters, both of whom are international foodies. Words will fail to describe the attention to detail provided in terms of textures, layers of taste, and stunning composition of visually and emotionally appealing presentations. This is accessible, comfortable, and soul stirring food at its best. The chef's tasting menu was without question the best way to enjoy the multifaceted talents of the chef and his kitchen.

Special evening in Chicago
We were fortunate enough to be familiar with the famed Chef Takashi's style from eating at his famed suburban Detroit restaurant Tribute. He follows a similar style here however in a somewhat less pretentious atmosphere. There wasn't a plate that wasn't beautiful. I literally could have ordered 1 PB everything. Waitstaff was superb. Will look forward to eating there upon my return.

Great meal start to finish
My husband and I really enjoyed our meal at Takashi. We each had an appetizer, seafood chowder and soba gnocchi. Each were just lovely. I had the duck which I highly recommend. The server suggested a great Syrah and monastrelll blend to go with it. The combination was absolutely superb. My husband had the barramundi, which was also excellent. Our desserts were sesame pana cotta and the tropical fruit financier. The financier plate was amazing! This was a great meal! I am so happy we went.

Please Don't Go :-)
This is my favorite restaurant in Chicago and if you all go then you'll discover it's greatness and then I'll never be able to get a table!
On the other hand, it would be selfish I suppose not to share this true Chicago gem.
So - GO... enjoy... tell your friends... and encourage Takashi-san to expand so that more of us can go more often.
The food is what you would expect from a chef who has 1 Michelin Star and fought Michael Symon to a 1-point decision on Iron Chef...simply put, outstanding and creative.

Brief but good menu & evening
We were in and out in under 2 hours - interesting food combos, good flavor balances.

Truly a Top Chef
There can be no better chef in Chicago than Takashi. From 1st sip to last bite an extraordinary dining experience.

Japanese French Fusion Fun
Great neighborhood spot to take a few friends or that special someone for a quieter evening for great food. It's a bit pricy but you will be satisfied and full.

My guest was so comfortable
My guest was so comfortable to dine at Takashi. I would like to bring my family to Takashi as well.
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
We celebrated or three year anniversary here, and we had a blast. Definitely recommend the chefs tasting menu. Absolutely stunning presentation, and even better quality. We will be going back next time we are in Chicago.

High class w/ comfortable elegance
Everything was fantastic...close to a 5. Food was fresh, especially the specials. Service was attentive. The pork dish we had was excellent. I would certainly eat there again in a second, but won't rate this as a cant miss place

Good Asian fusion food
I went there with my folks - we all enjoyed the food very much. Dishes were made with creative fusion flairs, although some had slight disappointments e.g. beef of my dad's main dish was a little tough and they could have used a more tender cut. Nothing to be too concerned about and we still really enjoyed our dinner. But when we compared it to Blackbird which was around the same price, we all agreed that we preferred Blackbird.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
I Didn't See Stars
The food was excellent: imaginative and and beautifully executed but the service was friendly but amateur despite the waiters being charming. All that and the less than remarkable decor made one wonder why Michelin awarded a star.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of my favorite restaurants. Clean, great tasting food. Great decor and excellent staff. Amazing
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food has gotten slightly
The food has gotten slightly tired in the year since my last visit. Certain aspects are still delectable and well presented (pork belly, confit appetizer) but the mains were closer to phoning it in. Service is friendly but expert. Ambiance is and always will be amazing: cozy and comfortable. But the food needs some perfection to keep this restaurant in Chicago's top tier.

A Fabulous Dinner
This was one of my most memorable meals ! Everything was just perfect. Fixed beautifully and tasted wonderful.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have been to Takashi before and found it absolutely delicious. The food pairings are unusual and mouth-watering. I can't wait to go back.
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
finally, first-rate japanese-based fine dining in chicago. as great as chicago's dining scene is, it has not for many many years stacked up well to new york, SF, and LA for japanese-based, like masa, morimoto, benu, ame, nobu. takashi's is not quite up to this standard (yet), but there were some exceptional dishes. the flavor are sometime off the chart and chef takashi is incredibly creative and talented. the service is solid, but could use a bit more of the finicky, performative attention to detail that you find at tru and used to find at trotter's. great meal overall.

What a treat!
A "must" experience for foodies. Chef Takashi is a master and perfectly combines delicate tastes and textures with the spicy, bold, and unexpected.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Simply one of the best dining experience we've had. Takashi himself was excellent yet humble. You barely come across such individual. We had chef tasting menu, and it was one of the best tasting menu we've had. (There were some misses, but the hits were just perfect!) Give yourself and love one some treat by going to Takashi!
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Takashi hits the mark
I went out on a first date here on a Saturday night and it was perfect. The price tag is on the high end but it was definitely worth it. The tasting menu with the wine pairing was the perfect experience for a first date. Afterwards, we even got to meet chef Takashi Yagihashi.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Special occasion?-Special place
Takashi is very expensive but worth considering when you are looking for that very special place to celebrate. The food is exceptional and you will not have tasted many of these dishes ever before in your life. Even the desserts (yes, plural--at least on the 11 course tasting menu) were delicious and I am usually not a fan of eastern desserts.
The service was impeccable, the ambience modern but cozy at the same time. We asked the server to turn down the volume on the great jazz music on the sound system and, once he did, the sound level was perfect. We had a table for 4 that was partly in a recessed nook so it felt very private/public at the same time.
I recommend the beverage pairings, too, as they added to the experience.

We have been a few times now
We have been a few times now and the food and service never disappoint, one of the best meals you can have in the city.

Excellent omakase + scallops!
For our anniversary, we tried the omakase (chef's tasting menu). Each dish had a slight sense of nostalgia/familiarity, while subtle culinary twists elevated the food above the traditional dishes we were reminded of. Our favorite was the scallop with soba gnocchi - the scallop arrived searing hot and to perfect doneness; it was one of the best we've ever eaten! I was impressed by the successful incorporation of parmesan cheese into an asian seafood dish. We also received excellent service - attentive, but not overly so, and very informative of each dish's finer points. Near the end of our meal, we even received a plate with "Happy Anniversary!" written in chocolate alongside fresh raspberry sorbet! Overall, a fantastic experience.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
I recommend getting the tasting menu if you've never been to takashi. It's a great way to try his best in one setting. Pork belly and scallops are real standouts.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
We got the 11 course prix fixe and it was great! There was everything from sashimi to udon to sukiyaki. Would definitely recommend this for a special occasion.
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Strikes a rare balance
The fashion among top chefs seems to be to mix disparate ingredients and present them beautifully on a plate. All well and good, except when the ingredients are so various and mixed that the palate can neither differentiate nor appreciate any of them.
At Takashi, the ingenious menu offered myself and my very exacting Italian husband a rare chance to enjoy food different and special enough to justify the trip (we were visiting from another state) and expense.
We opted for the chef's tasting menu. Every dish was a delightful surprise - a thoughtful and well-excecuted grouping of ingredients, which nevertheless did not overdo things. You could taste the ingredients individually and in their creative blending.

Changed A Bit
We have dined at Takashi repeatedly every since the year it opened. In past, the combination of very good food and a quiet, leisurely pace to the attentive service were the main attractions, now the restaurant seems to have evolved a bit. the food is even better at its best-sublime really( the scallop dishes, the pork belly, the tofu, the duck., the "egg" for dessert.) but a bit less consistent. In a few, part of a portion was flawed, the rest great. The service also was much less appealing. One had the sense of a staff wanting to turn tables fast. It would be great if Takashi could combine the best of the old and best of the new. Despite the flaws, we would happily return again.

Great Spot for a Quiet Anniversary
We were seated on the second floor toward the front. The setting is intimate and relatively quiet. Our server was well-informed (and interesting) about both the menu and the wine choices of interest to us. We particularly enjoyed the sauteed Maine scallops with Soba Gnocchi (a house specialty and not to be missed) and the heirloom tomato salad, both appetizers. We were relaxed and not rushed in any way. Service was attentive without being intrusive. We'll return.

As a food TV junkie and a proud Chicago resident, I'd been wanting to visit Takashi for some time. Using my birthday as the catalyst, my boyfriend and I made reservations for the big day. Before going, we reviewed the menu online and decided to share two cold plates, two hot plates and one main. Considering we're both petite people, we were full to the brim after adding a dessert to that list. Everything was incredibly good (the beef tartare was our favorite dish with the duck confit and scallops coming in at a close second). Unabashedly, I told the waiter that it was my birthday and when the dessert came out, it was accompanied with a plate that had Happy Birthday written in chocolate - a thoughtful touch to a memorable night.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was a really great experience. The food was fantastic, the service excellent. I had a show to catch and was pressed on time, the server made sure all our food came out in a timely fashion. The plates were dazzling. I absolutely love this place and will definitely come back! Thank you for making my boyfriends birthday that much more special!

A perfect dinner
My girlfriend and I had an amazing experience at Takashi! We did the tasting menu and added in the seared foie gras because we love foie, and thank god we did because it was the most delicious thing we ate all night. Sometimes when you do a tasting menu they do 15 courses and 2 or 3 of them are anticlimactic fillers. With this 7 course tasting every plate packs a punch with many different flavors and layers. The waiters are well versed on the menu selections and are very attentive without overdoing it. I highly recommend this restaurant and I do consider myself a food snob. Try this restaurant, you won't be disappointed .
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
This has to be one of the most flavorful dinners I have ever experienced in this city. We got the tasting menu and each item built on the next with more and more delightful flavors. One of my favorites was the gnocchi with the scallop - simply divine! Takashi himself was even at the restaurant and came over to say hello.
I can't wait to go back and try the Japanese tasting menu!
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great family style experience
My friend & were visiting for the marathon, had the 7 course family style dinner after running the race...it was a great experience. As a person that loves all asian food, we appreciated the variety of food in addition the many methods of preparation, no two dishes were alike, yet everything was in perfect balance. The service was outstanding as well, a true gem.

Outstanding kaiseki menu
This spot has a relaxed, elegant, but non-pretentious atmosphere, which makes for a wonderful romantic evening. The first time I went here, there were some stand-out items, but also a few underwhelming entrees. The second time I came here, I ordered the kaiseki menu with drink pairings, and it was outstanding. Out of 11 courses, there was only one that I found disappointing. In particular, the octopus and scallop crudo with tobanjan vinaigrette was astounding -- I had never had a crudo before where the sauce so perfectly enhanced the oceanic flavors of the fish. The other stand-out was the gorgeous ginger panna cotta dessert topped with a delicate pink watermelon gelee and chopped plum. Overall, one of the best meals I've had in Chicago.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great fusion cooking
Some of the food was purely Asian, some more French influenced. But all we'll prepared and delicious.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fun play on food throughout
Fun play on food throughout the 11 course tasting. We were overwhelmed with amount of food by the second to last main course and we had two more amazing desserts to go. Delicious as always and it was a pleasure to celebrate yet another anniversary at Tekashi.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Friend and I did the chef's tasting menu. Very good range of flavors, plates were paced well that neither felt rushed nor dragged out. Opted to have individual cocktails over the wine pairing, which were certainly unique flavors in themselves. Enthusiastic wait staff. Great space, we dined upstairs in what looked like a large attic, but was beautifully decorated and well lit--certainly felt intimate.
The only plate that really blew us away was the dessert (creme brulee with pistachio macaroon), but all the dishes were all excellent and kept us on our feet as to picking out complex flavors and textures. Fun experience overall. Expensive, but for us it was worth it for a special occasion.

Scallops are a must
We had a wonderful dinner! I recommend the scallops and the pork buns wich are spectacular.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything was just fantastic.
Everything was just fantastic. I also wanted to comment on the fact that I have an allergy and they were even willing to rework the Omakase(Chef's tasting menu) to accommodate.

Run by a Top Chef Master candidate, this was a fun evening. The chef tasting menu is an awesome experience in Japanese-French fusion art...

Delicious spot for foodies!
This is one of those restaurants where you want to order everything on the menu. If you're looking for flavorful cocktails, an inventive menu, and exquisite flavors... this is your place. We ordered the Duck Confit and Prosciutto Salad, the Soy-Ginger Caramel Pork Belly (which was served in a deconstructed style with hot buns and daikon), the Mugifugi Pork Loin and the Scottish Salmon. Chocolate sticky cake for dessert. Romantic ambience... great for a special occasion. We will definitely be back!

Best Birthday Dinner Experience!
Truly one of the best dining experiences of our lives! Takashi's creative entrée dishes are amazing! A must visit if your ever in Chicago! Thank you for an amazing dining evening!

Took us back to Japan
My wife and I went to Takashi to celebrate her birthday and enjoyed the Sunday Kaiseki meal. We did the 11 course meal with parings and it was fantastic. It reminded us of the Kaiseki meals we had in Japan. I can't think of a better compliment than that. The service was second to none and the environment was just amazing. This is our second time to Takashi and it was as good as we remembered! I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves great food and especially those looking to either revisit some Japanese food they've had in the past or explore some amazing interesting flavors and tastes!

2nd time there, perfect 10
2nd time there, perfect 10 both times. Can't can't say I've ever said that about a restaurant before, go here and enjoy everything.

Years ago a young chef from Ambria started a restaurant in Detroit, Tribute, which I came across while there looking for a site for a business dinner. It was so good then I returned 3 times. Imagine my joy to learn that Takashi had returned to Chicago. The menu is divided three ways: cold, hot and entrees. Tuna crudo was our starter: the crisp pancetta was a perfect topping. Scallops with gnocchi and chanterelles were perfectly seared still moist within. The pork two ways, breaded cutlet and roasted loin, was well seasoned and tasty. Finally, save room for the chocolate creme brûlée which comes delivered in an eggshell accompanied by the perfect macaroon. I would drive to Detroit for this dinner. Happily Takashi is here in Chicago.
