My boyfriend and I love this restaurant . The service was great, our server was friendly and knowledgeable. She was attentive, but didn't hover. They always bring out a complementary bread basket, which has a delicious cornbread in it. My boyfriend ordered the strip steak and was very pleased with it. I had the hanger steak, which I've had before and it's delicious! Since it was my boyfriend's birthday and I'd let them know ahead of time we were given a complimentary dessert - the apple pear fritters, which are also amazing! The menu ranges in price, so depending on what you order it could be a $50-60 meal for two or closer to $80-100. I'd definitely come back to try other menu items!

This restaurant might be about
This restaurant might be about the closest you can get to Little Theater of Alexandria, so a great pre-theater choice within easy walking distance. Good menu, good food, reasonable prices and the service was excellent.

The food was perfect and made a special lunch memorable. Will definitely return. Great wine list too!

Great food, decent service. Right in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Overall outstanding experience.

Very good lunch
The food and drinks were outstanding. Service top notch. Had saw the restaurant before and didn't pay it any mind, but man was I wrong. Definitely will return. Brunch was very good and very well priced.

Classy but accessible
A good Restaurant Week find. An upscale contemporary American food restaurant that seemed full of young professionals, we nevertheless didn't feel too out of place with our 4-month-old.
Almost everything was terrific--with particular highlights in the appetizers and desserts. I highly recommend the onion rings and reuben rolls as appetizers, and my berry compote was great.
A few of the entrees might have used some tweaking. The dried strip steaks seemed a little gristly and the bison stroganoff was under-seasoned. The diver scallops were fantastic, though.
Overall, we left very full and very satisfied.

An evening at the Firehouse
My wife and I recently dined at the Columbia Firehouse for the first time. We chose to dine in the upstairs dining room that provided a sophisticated yet casually comfortable setting. The service provided by the dining room staff was second to none. Their timely yet courteous demeanor reflected training, discipline, and pride in their work. The quality of the meal was very good and the suggestions made by the staff regarding wine and food was superb.
We noted as we departed the restaurant the bar setting and made a note to return one evening to enjoy the atmosphere provided by a stunning bar presentation. The Columbia Firehouse is truly a "not to miss" location in Old Town Alexandria. We will return!

Here's the fire!
Sparkling service, interesting menu (bone marrow appetizer, stroganoff with bison ribs), well-prepared food, and a lovely outdoor patio make this converted firehouse in Old Town Alexandria worth a visit.

Slow for food to come out.
Slow for food to come out. It was a busy day, with waiters being shadowed by what seemed like new people. But still pretty slow.
Food was amazing, minus the Apple-Pear Crisp, which had an overwhelming "ginger"-like taste. Just wasn't what we were expecting.

Columbia firehouse does standard favorites, but with a twist. We brought two friends there for Restaurant Week. Two of our party of 4 ordered the Rueben appetizers, and they were delicious--all the usual rueben ingredients, but done in an egg roll, and served with a russian dressing dip. The fried oysters were done to perfection, and served on a bed of spicy coleslaw. One person had the chili, which was task and a generous portion.
Three of us had the bison stroganoff--nice sauce, and a tender, whole serving of meat atop the nice noodles. One person enjoyed his steak entree with vegetable sides.
We liked the banana pudding dessert very much!
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Took the in-laws here and heard that the mussels were outstanding. The onion rings were fantastic, and especially the buttermilk goat cheese dip for them...mmmmmmm. My bison stroganoff was fantastic, husband said his dry-aged steak was the best meat he's ever had, and our desserts were, well, let's just say there were no crumbs left.
The server was very nice, even when, as a whole, our table took about 30 minutes just to figure out what to eat. We got there around 6 and sat in the main room with the room-length sky light. It was a nice room, beautiful light fixtures. It did get noisier as the night got longer, but that is to be expected. Overall, I would definitely return!

My coworker and I really enjoyed our dining experience The Columbia Firehouse and look forward to returning.

A Neighborhood Gem
We had a fabulous meal with outstanding service. It was the last night of Restaurant Week, and the four of us had delicious meals from start to finish. We began with the salad wedge with tons of blue cheese.I had the seared scallops, outstanding. My husband enjoyed the bison stroganoff. The banana pudding was delightful, and my husbands berry sundae was refreshingly delicious.
Our server was friendly, helpful, and professional.
The Columbia Firehouse is beautifully decorated, loved the idea that it was actually a firehouse. It's a romantic place to celebrate with friends and family.

Great get together place
I went to the firehouse with 2 girlfriend and we had a rest time. The server realized we were a group of friends catching up and left us to taking and gossiping. Wonderful food too. I had the bison strogonoff which melted in your mouth. The mac& cheese and meat and cheese platter were excellent as well.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing food, service and atmosphere! It doesn't get any better then the Columbian Firehouse!
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very good service and good
Very good service and good attention to detail. Sunday night Meatloaf special was very good. Would return again.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Requested an outdoor table when we made the reservation. They offered one to us when we arrived. Mussels were very good and tasty. In the past we enjoyed the tuna taco's which were not on the menu, however, our server said she would take care of that for us. Great job. Main courses were good. Service was excellent.

Great, Innovate Brunch Menu
Food was great, service was excellent, love the Bacon Bloody Mary's, and all the menu items we excellent and innovative, definitely worth a visit and they definitely earned their place on Washingtonian Magazine's Top 50 Breakfast.& Brunch list.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent across the board
The food was amazing, the service attentive, friendly, but not over bearing, and the ambiance was energetic without being too noisy. I was in town from Germany, and went there with some friends....it definitely impressed us. I'll be going back the next time I'm in the DC area.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
A nice night out.
We had a nice night out with friends. The service and food were very good. I would recommend the Firehouse to a friend.
One exception... As the table ordered dessert, I capped off the night with a Guinness. This was a bad choice...they cant pour a Guinness.

Dinner at the Firehouse
late kitchen making it a good after theater eatery
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Beats the mean
Better food and service than other similarly priced restaurants in old town

Great for a special occasion
This is the second time we've chosen Columbia Firehouse for a special occasion meal and there's a reason we keep coming back - great service and a wonderful atmosphere! And the pork shank meal was enough for me to enjoy twice- yum!
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dinner for visitors
We've been there numerous times, but my parents came to visit from the West Coast and are foodies. They had a great time and raved about the food. I almost hate to give such a great review so it doesn't get too crowded. Definitely one of the top restaurants in Old Town.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very nice menu with options
Very nice menu with options for all. Wine list and bar options were very nice. We did find we were waiting extended times between service re-visitsbecause our waiter was assigned a large party and was unable to juggle both. The delay caused us to not have time to order dessert. Overall a truly enjoyable meal and dining experience!
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is always excellent and the service is wonderful. Thanks for being consistent!
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great staff. We had a very nice dinner. My wife's filet was done beautifully and had great flavor - perfect.
My pork shank lacked flavor but the polenta served with it helped make it an enjoyable meal. We also discovered a very nice Cabernet! This was our second visit and we would consider coming back.

Great for Date Night
My boyfriend and I went to Columbia Firehouse on a Friday night for date night. Great choice! The server was attentive but not overly so. The cocktails were well made and the corn bread in the bread baskets were delicious. We both ordered the squash soup and it was really amazing. Great flavors and perfect for fall. I got the scallops and he got a steak, both were well cooked and seasoned. Overall a great place for a date, gathering with friends, etc. We will definitely go back!
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Enjoyed the menu a ton
We loved this restaurant. We invited our friends and their son. Great night. Service was slow, but everything else was great.

Great Food and Awesome Atmosphere
First time having an actual meal at the Firehouse! Took my mother and father to dinner to celebrate her birthday. The bar is perfect for a pre/post dinner cocktail as the bartenders are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The dinner was perfect all plates were empty at the end of the dinner. The a la carte side dishes were perfect for sharing two between 3 people (green bean casserole and broccoli/cauliflower au gratin were amazing). I had the scallops with rocket salad and corn fritters it was the perfect amount of food and the scallops were high quality. The steak selection there is something for everyone and they are quality cuts of meat. As I live a few blocks away I'll definitely be having more than just drinks again!
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had a great time, service was excellent, food great! Food served VERY fast, not much time for table talk. But they didn't rush us too much!
Bison was great!!
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Relaxed atmosphere, limited menu but the soup of the day was very good as was the roast chicken.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was great and they don't rush you. The chef even made a dessert that was not on the menu but one a guest had in the past. The waiter was very gracious and said he would ask if the chef would prepare it and he did! The noise level was low and enough room between tables you don't feel cramped or crowded and no one is listening in on your conversation.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went right at opening on Sunday morning - we had reservations, but most of the other early folks did not and were seated right away, so it probably wasn't necessary. We sat in the bright atrium area - very nice. My corned beef hash with poached eggs was excellent. My spouse had the burger with pimento cheese and bacon. The burger and bacon were both excellent. Pimento cheese was a nice touch, but the powerful flavor of the bacon overwhelmed it (in a very good way - the bacon was top notch). The onion rings were also good - thin, crispy battering. Many other things on the menu looked good and we'd like to try it again when we are in the area.

Good Neighborhood Place
Been there many times. Service always great. Servers friendly. Wish they had a wider variety of entrees and sweet potato fries rather than french fries.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
This place is a block off the main street and doesn't look like much from outside but I am so glad we gave it a chance. Not only was the place nice but the food was great as well. I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the area.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Arrived with the a reservation for 3 requesting a high chair. Everything was ready to go when we arrived. Waitress was helpful and food was terrific. Great wine and beer list.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
I come here often because my husband and I have an ongoing dispute as to who has the best mussells in the DC area. It is a close call between Columbia Firehouse and Brasserie Beck. We still can't decide but both are outstanding.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Get the mussels!
Initially it took them a while to seat a table for 2 that was previously reserved in advance. Once we got over that hiccup, our service was wonderful. There was a mix up and the mussels we ordered for an appetizer never came out and the management comped us for it even when we would have kept the order anyways cause the mussels are that good! I've been here several times now but just at the bar area and service has always been really great. I think the shareables are tastier than the main courses itself but the food lives up to the high standards. Not wow off my socks tasty but not terrible either. Just right.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Everything was great. I'm
Everything was great. I'm still talking about the curry/coconut milk mussels! The pork shank was melt in your mouth good. Looking forward to a return visit
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
CF was a unique spot. I loved the ambience, and the different menu. I'm glad they added on the chophouse portion of the menu, as it gave some good meat choices. We had to spring for dessert, (which I never do unless its a special occasion) and it was delicious. It was great to share, just enough to satisfy the sweet tooth with over indulging. Would have liked to have side options available that comes with the entrees - something small and light, like a cup of veggies, sweet potato, or a side salad option. Although the add-on side dishes are delicious, none of them provide a very healthy option, as they all seem to be casseroled or have meat in the them. Chophouse salad was delicious. Love the beets and fruit combo.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Local eatery with historic significance. Learned about the history of the building from a menu filled with a complete array of drink options and food that made my dinner choice far from simple. For starters, we shared the tuna that came with pickled vegetables, it was tremendous. For dinner I had the braised pork shank over polenta with an au jus sauce and my girlfriend had the scallops with sweet corn fritters. Both were cooked and plated beautifully. Everything was excellent.

My dining experience
Amazing food and company at the Columbia Firehouse and definately would recommend this restaurant to my family and friends and look forward in visiting this restaurant again in the future. Stuart Austin from United Kingdom

Loved it for brunch!
Great menu and delicious French ham and cheese and Portobello sandwich. Loved the atmosphere and everything!

Amazing food and great local beer!
The Columbia Firehouse has an amazing selection of beers from Virginia and Maryland. The menu was unique and the food was delicious. Absolutely a great restaurant!
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
I brought my very mid-western in-laws here two weeks back.
Jon, our server, was well informed and patient.
The food was delicious and exceeded their expectations... Which is a hard thing to accomplish.
My filet, rare, was incredible. We all loved sharing the side and creating our own dishes with the "sides" and steaks.
There was a terrible lady that sat next to us, then moved and moved again causing a small disturbance as she moved throughout the restaurant. It looked as if a manager had to serve her and her mom? in the end. The manager needs a hug pat on the back, she suck it up for everyone.
Overall, a wonderful time.
11/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
great space, great food, okay wine
My friend and I meet before a 7pm concert. Considering the Firehouse doesn't start seating until 530 it was tight. We shared a kettle of mussels and I had the scallops and she had the sea bass. Mussels were perfectly cooked, scallops could have had a bit more color but were tasty. I didn't feel like reading the wine list so I asked for the house white. They don't have a house white. The server suggested a sauvignon blanc, as I don't like chardonnay. I have had much better wine. I had a but of a sticker shock when the bill came-the wine was $12 a glass! Yikes, my two glasses of wine was the same price as my meal. lesson learned, never trust a server to suggest wine, especially here. Read the wine list!

Wonderful Experience, Tasty Food
The atmosphere of The Columbia Firehouse blew us away. On a Tuesday evening, the crowd was just right to not feel abandoned but still feel quiet and intimate. The decor walks a good line between fancy and comfortable. An ideal setting for a meal. Our waiter was attentive, always there when we needed him but never in our faces or rushing us.
My husband got a filet from their new steakhouse section on the menu. Their steaks all come from a local farm and blew him away. With the side of mushrooms that was also amazing (and could have been shared between 2), his meal was $50 which we weren't expecting but he was fine with. I got mussels which were good but not amazing. Dessert was fine but could be skipped. Great beer and cocktails.

Great for special occasions
Found this gem while looking for a restaurant close to MetroStage. The service was a little slow but it was a Saturday night and the place was packed. We started with the mussels and split a wedge salad. Then we moved on to the sea bass and the New York strip with bacon/bourbon butter. Everything was delicious. It's pricey but, hey, it's Old Town. Great for special occasions and before a play.
