The Quintessential Experience
The Carlyle Hotel is simply the best hotel in New York City, and the restaurant is completely consistent with that. Everything is effortless and sublime. We go there whenever we are in the city, and we are treated like old friends. Truly, the golden age of New York City is alive and well at this unique establishment. Long may it reign!

A special treat. Relaxing
We have lunch here when in NYC. THE OLD CUBAN is my favorite cocktail. The bread is great! Very accommodating with special requests. The flower arrangements are always creative. A special treat.

grand ole time
It is nice to be able to dine in the neighborhood in old world elegance similar to what my mother ( 85) was used to years ago at the St. Regis without all the fuss of going to midtown. The service and staff are most accommodating and hte feeling is relaxed, familiar and wonderfully destressing!!! I would choose a table on the periphery of the room next time as it is hard to hear for some elderly
in the middle where the other tables in the ceter are so close. Also it's been ages and I usually travel with my husband who takes care of the bill so I was caught a bit off guard by the split gratuity between captain and staff. Guidelines please for next time!

Dad's 70th birthday
It was a great place to host a small group on an important occasion. The setting, service and food helped to make it an elegant, perfect choice for his birthday dinner. With a feeling of 'old new york', The Carlyle has the air of old wealth, pure elegance and successful establishment. The food was delicious.

We went here for my mother's birthday and everything worked out perfectly. The food was great and the service was excellent. We took with us out 4 month old baby and they were very helpful with the stroller, patient when she was fuzzy, and very caring with her and us. The menu is delicious. However, the desserts are just good, very standard in my opinion for a place like this, that's the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. Also, the space was a little weird: we were 4 dinning together and my husband had to sit at a different table attached to the main one. But it wasn't really too bad.

No Better Place to Dine. Period.
I am a long-standing fan of the Carlyle. The food is extraordinary, the service divine. The ambience is what is most surprising, as you will be treated like a valued patron whether you're in jeans or a suit. It's the best place to have an adult meal--quiet, elegant, delicious and the warm-toned, fabric walls envelop you like a womb. The price you pay for this is high, but no higher than any other fine meal in the city and there NOTHING like it anywhere. Nothing.

Opulant and Enjoyable
Extremely opulant, expensive but worth it, had the Beef Wellington and would gladly return

We were seated to a narrow table, which was good for drinking but not for lunch. But otherwise, we had a great time!

Old world charm and modern cuisine
Upon entering the building,I felt transported back a century. The atmosphere was superb. it was not a
Noisy environment. I thought I was entering someone's house, not a restaurant. The room set aside for
Early comers was very pleasant. instead of uncomfortable chairs, we were seated on a lovely, cushiony
Couch. The days fixed-priced lunch was superb. I was sorry I could not choose the lobster bisque.
Unfortunately, the fish entree was cold, but the hanger steak was good and the cream brûlée was
Heavenly. I observed the reproductions on the. There was only one modern painting, the rest reminded
Of the early twentieth century or 19th century. Most diners for the afternoon meal were older women, but it was
An enjoyable experience. Be back again.

I found the Carlyle a wonderful restuarant. It was elequent and sophisticated without being stuffy. Staff was attentive and sophisticated without being pretentious.

We went to celebrate my husband's birthday. Our Captain Chuck, (real name Charles) was attentive and went out of his way to make my husband's birthday memorable. Thank you Charles. It is a very beautiful restaurant and very romantic too. However the food was good, not great.

Elegant Dining Experience
We went to the Carlyle to celebrate my friend's birthday. This is the kind of dining experience that is hard to find. From our table we could look at this magnificent flower arrangement as we dined. The food was beautifully prepared and delicious. I would go back to order the Cornish hen again. The service was impeccable.
I do not often say this--I cannot wait to go back!!

Visited during Restaurant Week and the food, service and ambience were impeccable. For Restaurant, they did not skimp on portions or quality; Lemon Tart outstanding! Truly, a New York City gem.

Excellent as always
The Carlyle is one of the best restaurants in New York City!!!! Classic, attentive, a touch of "GOOD OLD FASHION FRENCH SERVICE" like years back at many New York Restaurants. Having had the opportunity to work for the Rainbow Room when it was owned by Joesph Baum I sometimes long for the "Classic Touches" and "Romanticism" offered to those dining at these now missed establishments. I ordered the Salad with Jicama and apples, the Cornish Hen with Summer Polenta, and the Fresh Plum Melba all created to perfection. I have "YOUNGER" friends who are now interested in experiencing dining at the Carlyle after sharing my experience with them.

Elegant luxury with superb service
I had been to the Carlyle a few years ago & returned this summer hoping it had not fallen from the heights I remembered. The standards are still as high as ever.

Wonderful food and an experience
Wonderful food and an experience enhanced by the most beautiful and elegant surroundings, which create intimate spaces. Here the scenic view is not NYC but the room in which you are having a special meal!

Ladies Who Lunch
We have eaten at the Carlyle every year we have come to NYC (since 2007). Normally we do the "ladies who lunch" menu, but due to Restaurant Week, we tried that menu and it was wonderful. I couldn't get my favorite dessert - the 27 layer lemon crepe - but the alternative was good, too. We look forward to this meal - one of the highlights of our trip!

Romantic, with fine food
This is a romantic restaurant, with old world ambiance, fine food, excellent service and low noise level. Highly recommended, especially for the skate.

Almost Perfect But
I have been to this restaurant before and found it to be very refined. This time, when we arrived, the captain was wonderful, the service superb and the food delicious. The reason I have not rated the restaurant more highly is due to the captain that came on around 2-2:30 pm. He began conversing with various patrons in a loud, self serving manner, and didn't stop. It was so irritating that we finished our desserts quickly so as to leave as soon as possible. We were stunned to have to tolerate this behavior in so refined a place. I don't know the man's name but he made sure to let others know in a loud voice that he was of Polish descent. The owner of the restaurant needs to educate this man on what is acceptable behavior in his role.

Our brunch at The Carlyle was a truly memorable and special. First, the outstanding staff saw to every need and the professional touch they added was wonderful. Secondly, the presentation, flavor and variety of the menu is a delight to any palate. Finally, the setting is beautiful, grand and a welcomed coziness that adds to the luster of such an opportunity to treat yourself or a loved one to a true dining experience.
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
When you look to define a classy place you can find it on the upper east side at the Carlyle hotel.
9/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
When I was a child (a long time go) my parents always raved about The Carlyle Hotel. Recently on my honeymoon, we had the opportunity to have dinner in the main dining room. We were hoping to see Woody Allen in the Café but we were too late for that. In any event, the main dining room is an elegant setting that evokes the timeless panache of old money NYC. The food was outstanding as was the service. The experience is not inexpensive but then what is a lifetime memory worth?

A special brunch
We had brunch for 7 people here for a special occasion - ages 5-70 - and the experience was remarkable. The service was impeccable and personalized. Not stuffy at all. They were extremely accommodating with the kids food-wise. Beautiful formal setting. Old school and delightful. Highly recommended for a special occasion brunch.

Our 26th anniversary celebration, since last year's 25th was destroyed by "superstorm" Sandy, was an event to remember. The food and service impeccable, Dover sole for two served table side and the sauce was devilishly delicious. Our server was a dr boning master/server who made us feel comfortable, yet special. Kudos to you, Carlyle!!

A More Traditional Slant on Dining
Don't expect imaginative, complex food offerings, just well-prepared, ample-sized dishes that won't leave you wondering what you got for your money. The entrecote (sirloin) for two was enormous, delicious, and worth the steep price-tag. The meal was greatly enhanced by the elegant surroundings, comfortable seating, and well-spaced tables.

The best food and service in NY

Old world dining and ambience
Carlyle is a great place to find that rarity in New York City--a QUIET, elegant place where you can hear your conversations. Its old-world ambience is elegant, timeless and soothing, the service outstanding, and the food is gourmet quality. If is also affordable if you opt for the prix-fixe lunch. When you feel like treating yourself, this is the place to go.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
My wife and I have been customers for many years of special occasions and the restaurant always delivers the goods. Norbert, the captain, is simply the best, as is his staff. Great cocktails too. Cheap, no! Worth it, yes!!!

Excellent hotel located on the upper east side. Great demonstration of historic new York control, power and wealth.

Great food spotty service
Enjoyed our return trip to this elegant spot. Food was solid but service was not; it took 20 minutes to get a cocktail.
