Previously noticed this place
Previously noticed this place in passing, but had never stopped in or eaten there. Very happy we chose to try it. Food was very good and staff was friendly and accommodating.

The brunch experience I had
The brunch experience I had was adequate, mainly because the server was slow (though really personable) and because we had to request plain tap water. The only water they gave us had cucumbers in it and not everyone enjoys this. The entrees was interesting but didn't blow anyone away. And they serve the tiniest biscuits I have ever seen!

Fried Chicken Rocks, Blinding Glare
Brunch Si Bon! - First approach, buffet setup doesn't look elaborate. Once one moves in, & then begins to nibble back at table, food is so super, not 1 item that was off, every single offering a tasty treat :) Waffles, Fried Chicken done so right, & so many wonderful other additions. For the price, some sort of juice should be included, or tea / coffee. Delightful food makes for a great meal, along w/ fine live music, even if the bill is harder to swallow, @$22 per person,+ + +. Near back, THE BRIGHT GLARE from Glass Back Door, reflection via white building-side, it's a shame. A partial blackout curtain above the door, or outside awning, would BOOST enjoyment of many diners having to face that back wall, just terrible. Can't see partner.

Fantastic brunch! The smoked
Fantastic brunch! The smoked salmon baked eggs were delicious. You have interesting drink options beyond a mimosa. Best part was the live band. I went with my entire family and everyone was having such a good time that the waitress had to politely coax us to finish up because there was a line out the door.
Definitely will return!

Our server was amazing! I
Our server was amazing! I believe her name was Pova? She was very knowledgable and extremely friendly. She definitely made our night!
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Would go back, but the location is in the Tenderloin so just be careful when getting to this restuarant!
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is always excellent esp. When I get a hankering for fried chicken! Great service and scene! Love their cocktails and mocktails too!
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
I met some friends here for dinner after work. We had a great dinner. The cocktails were amazing. The music is great. Yes, it is loud, but not so much that we couldn't have a normal conversation. I will definitely be back.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Efficient yet personal
The staff were always there when needed, re-filling a glass of water or taking away a finished plate. The items rolled out like clock-work. The restaurant was bustling, but not overwhelming in terms of noise or commotion. The food was fun, and sized nicely. All in all a good time to be had. I would definitely recommend this.

Didn't go for the brunch buffet-it
Didn't go for the brunch buffet-it looked like way too much food. The skillet eggs were delicious. Only negative comment-the biscuits were waaaay too small. I'm a big fan of biscuits and one of their biscuits is about the size of 1/4 of a normal biscuit.
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent food and cocktails
I've never had anything but excellent meals here. The fried chicken is to die for. When trout almondine is on the menu, order it!

Great southern style cooking
Best to have an early reservation because it does get crazy hectic. But 5:45 on a Friday was perfect. Seated immediately with a fantastic server, whose name, sadly, I can't remember. All our meals were very good to excellent. Pork chop on special was probably the highlight. It was gigantic and cooked to perfection, moist and flavorful. Veggie jambalaya with shrimp (shrimp optional) was very delicious, spicy but not too overbearing. The least of our three were the blacked shrimp and grits. They were delicious, grits were creamy cheesy goodness, BUT they were just lukewarm. The blackened shrimp were piping hot, so I suspect the cook plated the grits a little prematurely, and I didn't expect to have to detach the entire shrimp body. Yams yummy

I have head about this place for a while and we finally made it over here for dinner. My drink was pretty yummy, I had the orchid punch. We all seemed to enjoy our food (party of 4)... very tasty!! The only problem we all had was that people kept smoking in the enclosed gateway, basically it smelled like they were smoking inside the restaurant.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Weekend Stop
I've been on both Saturday and Sunday due to the breakfast buffet being open on only those days. If you like some good 'ol southern food, then check it out. The live band on Sunday, however, was way too loud. Couldn't hardly chat with company except between songs.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
We didnt have to wait. We were seated as soon as we arrived. The service was great and the food. I love this place because it small and the band is great
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Definitely keep coming back
I've been 3 times for brunch and have never been disappointed. The host, waitstaff, bartender, were all extremely friendly and helpful. It's a rough part of town, but as soon as you step inside you're transported. Brunch buffet is delicious! Get there right when they open and everything's fresh. They do a good job of keeping things delicious but there's nothing like the first hour: crispy outside, moist inside fried chicken, biscuits, gravy, fresh fruit, waffles, bacon, eggs! Not to mention, the best playlist anywhere. What's not to love about drinking a bloody mary, eating some bomb comfort food, and jamming out to Tevin Campbell, TLC and Aaliyah! Everything's to love about Farmer Brown. Go there.

A place for a great time, good food, great drinks and amazing service!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
My family and I went here for brunch after running the Nike Women's Half Marathon. We were running a little late for our reservation, but I called to let them know and it was not a problem. We did the brunch buffet which was a good choice. Fried chicken was so tasty! They also had an awesome band playing called "The Hot Pockets"!
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything was wonderful, I had the catfish and my friends had the shrimp and grits and the pulled pork. Everyone enjoyed their meals, the service was good and the drinks were nice. The fish was very fresh, the veggies were too and I can't say i have a single complaint.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
What a pleasant surprise!
We were looking for someplace to eat before going to the Orpheum and wanted to try something different. I have to admit it is a little intimidating walking through the tenderloin and when we reached the restaurant we wondered what we were in for. The outside of the restaurant wasn't bad, but when we went in we were extremely impressed. What a great atmosphere. We all were extremely happy with our dinners...the specialty, fried chicken was excellent, and everyone else raved about their meals as well. What a great find....southern soul food at its best....looking forward to going back and taking our husbands.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have been occasional visitor's of Farmer Brown's since it opened and again, enjoyed our dinner with our friends. One of them was a first timer to FB's. our waitress was fabulous, not only was she a great ambassador to the restaurant she also provided enthusiastic recommendations to us.Our dinner plans in the city are usually based around our final destination usually involving a club or a music venue. So Farmer Brown doesn't get our attention as often as we like to...We love Farmer Brown's and will go back soon!

Rich, warm tones
Rich, warm tones descrice the look and the food is just as comforting The fried okra reminded me of visiting my Madear in Texas

Not so bottomless mimosas
Some friends and I came on a Sunday for bottomless mimosas. I had heard so many great things about the food so we couldn't wait to eat and drink all morning.
I usually eat at Radish or Luna Park for brunch and bottomless mimosas on Sundays. With my experience, my glass was never empty. This was definitely not the case at farmer brown. Often times my friends and I found ourselves chasing down any waiter/waitress we could find to fill our glasses.... Not to mention the 90 min linit on the table.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was great. Wait staff
Food was great. Wait staff was very good and outgoing.

Organic Soul Goodness
Okra & shrimp huspuppies were fluffy and yummy. Sweet potatoe steak fries had a spicy kick with a perfect aioli dipping sauce which is mayonnasiey at all. These were my favorite
Chicken and Andouille Jambalaya is a good size & great for sharing. Southern Fried Chicken wing was good
but breast lacked seasoning and was dry. The macaroni and collard greens were perfect- just like home. Shrimp & Grits were good! The flavor of these shrimp were worth the leg removal work. The grits were perfecly buttered & cooked and, thank God, not instant.
The host made sure to not give our table away even though we were running late. She was very pleasant. The server was ok; not great and not terrible, just ok.
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great food and fun restaurant
This is a great place for foodies. Good food, and good cocktails. The only thing is that it gets really loud, and it's hard to hear the person you are dining with across the table from you.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went to Farmer Brown for brunch. We chose to order off of the menu rather than partaking in the buffet. We both had a skillet entree and both were fabulous. The Bloody Marys were great also. We'd go back for brunch for sure the next time we're in San Fran.
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
A friend and I dined at Farmer Brown while waiting for my daughters attending a concert at the Warfield. It was a quick walk from the theater. I made a reservation the morning of and was disappointed with our table- I felt like our table was an island and in the way of wait staff who had to walk around us to get to other tables. The food was good and priced right. Ribs were good, and also the blackened shrimp and crawfish were very good. If you want to have an intimate dinner and be able to hear your companion this is not the place to go- it's a noisy place. A good place to go if you're in the area. I don't think I would make a special trip.
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great place to entertain friends
Although we were there right before closing (10PM), the service, ambiance, and especially the food was great. This place has kept its quality through the years. Wish the kitchen was open later as in the old days, I could visit more often after the theater is over.

Fried Chicken. 'nuff said!
First time at Farmer Brown. A bit of a sketchy walk there from Union Square but well worth it. Farmhouse Lemonade was refreshing and went down (too) easily. Had the fried chicken, which was deeelicious! It was accompanied by mac and cheese and some greens - both solid. We also shared some angel biscuits - good stuff, but I've had better. Well worth a trip!
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
I made a last minute reservation for a party of one. They seated me immediately giving me a choice of dining at a table or in the bar. I opted for the brunch buffet in the bar. The bartender and wait staff were over attentive, supplying anything I needed. The only negative to the experience is that while the food was tasty the eggs and grits were cold.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Hit the Spot!
After being in the San Francisco and Napa area and experiencing different cuisines; this was a gem to find. The food was delicious and the service was the "best" we experienced...even after dining at some exclusive dining spots. This is one you would want to dine at if you are looking for a place where locals go and enjoy some good Southern Soul food cooking.

Elders at Brunch
My husband, sister, and I ate a delicious Sunday brunch at Farmer Brown. I was surprised by the demographics of mostly white hipsters. The ambiance was wonderful and in tune with the band. It was difficult to hear. We are hearing impaired.
The food - both the waffles and the French toast melted in our mouths. My husband ordered the burger. I ate the house-made chips, which brought back memories of chips I use to fry with our cook in our Oakland Chinatown restaurant some sixty plus years ago. The carafe of mimosa washed down our tasty food choices.
While the neighborhood is dicey it was easy for us to get to Farmer Brown because we stayed at the Metropolis. I would be interested in eating lunch or dinner there in the future.

Reservations don't matter
My friend invited me to a show at the Golden Gate Theatre. I found Farmer Brown and thought it sounded good. I made a reservation because I didn't want us to be rushed to eat before the show. We checked in with the host at 6:29pm for our 6:30pm reservation. We were told that there were no tables available, but checks were out and they were waiting for people to leave. We didn't get a table until almost 7pm. The host was very nice and kept us informed of what was going on and once we sat down the wait staff was also very nice, but we ended up trying not to burn our mouths while rushing to eat to get to the show.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
Dinner was delicious and the food came out pretty quickly, but had to ask three times for water before it actually arrived. Ask for a water carafe when you are seated. Some foods can be spicy and you'll need to wash it down.
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Fun and delicious!
We are always looking for great restaurants near the theater. Farmer Brown definitely fits the bill! It is one block from the Golden Gate Theater and there is a $15 parking lot next door.
The atmosphere is fun and vibrant! Really unique.
The food was delicious! We had fried okra as an appetizer...yum.
The catfish was lightly battered in cornmeal and delicious.
We also tried their specialty drinks which were fun and tasty.

Breakfast Brunch buffet was great and our server was on TOP of the bottomless mimosas, loved it!

The neighborhood is as other reviewers have said, "sketchy" but once inside it is worth the trip.

Secret in the Rough
Although, you may not want to travel to the tenderloin, the food and ambiance inside were well worth the tripI We enjoined the food tremendoulsly and the service was excellent. I stopped by with my boyfriend, before gong to see a musical at the Golden Gate. We were ever so thankful for the attended parking that was adjacent to the restaurant. I can not believe that I have missed this great restaurant, all these years, I will definately be back!!!! I had the fried chicken, greens and macaroni and cheese, LOVED IT! and he had the Catfish , yams and green beans, he also LOVED IT we als sipped on some jamaican cider which was delicious!!!! and last but not least, the music that was playing was great, we sat reminicing : )

Fun before the show spot
The location leaves much to be desired but it is convenient for a show at the Golden Gate Theatre. The menu items are great. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The service is slow, especially considering many of the guests are dining prior to a show. Overall, its a good spot for dinner!
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent Pre-Theatre Brunch Spot
Dined for the first time at this restaurant because online reviews sounded great. The restaurant did not disappoint - lively atmostphere, delicious brunch food and reasonable prices. Servers could have been a touch more attentive. Short 3 block walk to the theatres (Orpheum, Curran or ACT). Highly recommend.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Real good Southern food!
Farmer Brown's food was excellent! Not very many people can pull off greens and mac and cheese. However, it is a little on the pricey side, the portions are small, and the neighborhood is definitely not the best, but worth the experience.
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
Finger Licking Fried Chicken
I came here to taste the southern fried chicken and it did not disappoint. Dish came with 2 legs and a thigh since I like dark meat, and served with mac n cheese [not cheesy enough] and mustard greens [tasty]. Service was attentive and friendly. My friend had the catfish with mashed yams and fresh green beans which she enjoyed and finished. I will try it next time. The cucumber drink is very refreshing and delicious. Drinks and water are served in mason jars. Atmosphere is dark and urban grunge.
Noise level is loud and difficult to carry on a lengthy conversation. It was a full house. Also, lighting is too low and was difficult to read the menu in the dark. However, the food was very good with generous portions.

Southern Cooking at it's finest.
Farmer Brown really knows how to spice their food and make it tasty and delicious. We both enjoyed our meals and each had something very different. the Fried Chicken is truly Southern Fried Chicken and it comes with collard greens that are tasty and mac and cheese..Oh my Oh My...my husband had Smoked Chicken pot pie and he loved it. He had Chicken gumbo as a starter that he said was excellent and I had a wedge salad that was very tasty. they served little corn muffins with honey butter as a starter as well. So nice to see San Francisco adding some restaurants in what used to be considered the "tenderloin" and not a place you would frequent. This is a very nice restaurant with excellent service and not horribly pricey!!!

Great place for Brunch
Everything was good the only complaint I had that is was way too cold in there to really enjoy your food. We had to ask to be reseated because the table we were at had a direct draft from the front door and we had a baby with us. They were kind enough to move us but you still could not take off your coat to be comfortable. It was an ice box in there. I would definatley go back but maybe not till the summer when it warms up because I don't enjoy my good as much when I'm cold. That is the one thing they need to fix
12/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
secret place for travelers
It was a second visit at this restaurant. The foods are special in this area, as far as I know.
The location and outside looking is not so good, but the inside is fine and noisy by music.
Its soul foods offered here are tasty even for Japanese.

Great Soul Food
We visited prior to seeing a show. We arrived early and planned to have cocktails in the bar area. The bar was already very busy. The only place to sit was a table for two and because there was four of us, we asked to be seated at our dining table. We had our cocktails there. We placed orders for appetizers. The fried okra was "to die for". Each of us ordered something different for dinner. The Jambalaya was the definite winner, followed by the fried chicken. We will be back. Loved the dining experience, although it was very noisy.
