this was one of the best fine dining experiences that I have ever had. From service to food to wine, Tru delivers in spades. kudos for continuing to fill the void left when Trotter's closed!

Chef tasting treat
What a great experience for our 42nd anniversary! Our names were embossed on the top of the menus to great us, each server greeted us by name, Kyle (the wine guy) listened to our wine tastes and recommended a beautiful Pinot Noir to accompany our special dinner. We declined the caviar tastings as we would react like Tom Hanks in the movie BIG. Each and every mouth size morsel was tasty. The pace was perfect and the presentation was stunning. Lighted bowls, cold granite serving plates, salt rock slabs from Utah, etc. each presentation highlighted the components of the dish. Each separate but a wonderful harmony. Cheese plate was stunning, dessert bites kept coming plus one for breakfast the next day, as if we would ever eat again

It was a memorable evening with excellent food, superb service, attention to details and an excellent wine and champagne list. The focus is on the food and not so much on the "show". The ingredients were seasonal and the combinations of tastes, colors and texture were remarkable. Each dish had a surprising detail and we were always wondering what the next - positive - surprise would be. The only disappointment was one of the deserts which was not quiet as tasty and elegant as the other dishes of the menu. You pay for what you get. We left the restaurant with 1200$ bill for two. That included excellent vintage champagne and one of the more expensive choices of excellent caviar. Next to Alinea the best place we have dinned at in Chicago.

I don't think I can do it justice, but...
I planned a special dinner at Tru to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. When we arrived, we were given menus, that upon closer examination, were custom-printed with "Happy 50th Birthday Jon". It was a wonderful, personal touch that set the evening off beautifully! (Of course, we got to keep the menus!) We ordered the 14 course Tru Experience--go big or go home--and started off with caviar & also enjoyed the wine pairing. This was some of the most beautiful food we've ever seen & every bite was heaven. An unforgettable evening!

It was so-so
We enjoyed our night and we were thankful for a wonderful waitress who understood we were not the best candidates for the full 14 course, 4-5 hour experience. We chose the 7 course option and added a caviar course which took a little under 3 hours. It is wonderful that they offer this option. The food was very good but it would not bring us running back. Having experienced NEXT, ELIDEA, and Alenia, TRU is good but not the best Chicago has to offer.

23 century food
The food presentation and style changed from the last time I was there 4 years ago. Now ,although the food was good they added bells and whistles such as liquid nitrogen processed food. .Not my cup of tea. I like small portions which they had. Some of the larger portions could be smaller. Great sommelier and wine list.

It was a perfect experience
It was a perfect experience in every way. Top-notch dining with food and service that far exceed expectations.

A great restraunt!
Great service, food is good but certainly not worth $500, for a party of 2.

The Best of the Best
An incredible dining experence. My very favorite place to dine in Chicago. Remarkable creative. Impeccable service.

Unique dining experience
Fabulous presentation and food. A real gem for special occasions. Über expensive

Outstanding in every way.
The food was innovative, flavourful and beautifully presented without being overly dependent on the mainstay of many menus today - foams, gels, powders. The wine list is broad with depth in French offerings but the list of Champagne and sparkling wines and New World wines offers selection at reasonable price points. Service was attentive, unintrusive and well paced for a tasting menu with adequate time between courses. The dining room is very attractive if your tastes run to a minimal, modern room and the tables are sufficiently wide spaced that you can have conversation without being overheard or having to compete with the ambient music. An excellent dining experience.

We had the wine pairings with
We had the wine pairings with the 13 course meal. It was a pleasure. The food and service were excellent. 3 1/2 hours went by quickly. Explanations of the food and wine enhanced the dining experience. The presentation of each dish was beautifully done with some very creative touches. The entire staff was attentive, professional and knowledgeable. The music was annoying at first, but we didn't notice it as the meal progressed. If you want to experience a spectacular meal in Chicago, Tru is a must.

Food as art and theater
Quite a unique space where nothing competes with the food. Each course with it's own stage showing off the skills and creativity of Chef Anthony Martin and his staff. Highlights were Caviar, Blond Morel Royal, Veal loin, and the Epoisses with herb salad with the presentations in harmony with the quality of ingredients. All accompanied by great service of Mayan and her team on the floor. As good a list of Burgundies I've seen in the states in a while. It's always nice finding Rousseau on the list!

The food was excellent and
The food was excellent and service outstanding. Very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff. We were early and able to sit right away with no issues. The preset menu was great. We considered the Wine pairing but when advised that it was mostly white we opted for a bottle. We were very happy the waiter informed us of the white wine as we typically do not go for white. The setting was very quiet and romantic. Defiantly a must visit for dining in Chicago

Tru is lovely and the service is impeccable. Is it for every night? No, not unless you are extremely wealthy.
We decided to treat ourselves on the occasion of my partner's birthday and me starting a new job. It was about $570 after tip.
Now I'm motivated even more to succeed at my new job so I can come back! ;) Service was amazing, food delicious and inventive.

Great Anniversary Dinner
Tru had been on our restaurant list for awhile so we went to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Lovely evening and even got a tour of the kitchen at the end. Service was wonderful and we had customized menus celebrating our occasion. Great wine and very interesting presentation of the food.

Classy, innovative, fun
I had the 13-course tasting menu at TRU and overall really enjoyed it. Some of my favorite courses were the passionate marshmallow dessert, cool as a cucumber with caviar, Scottish salmon and yellow corn royal. I like Tru better than L2O and don't understand why it only has one Michelin star. On a weekday the dining room was less than half full the entire night and the lounge outside was completely empty. Service was excellent, always present but never hovering. I liked that they didn't push us to have wine pairings either, but helped us select a few glasses. Only a couple things were really off - the macarons in the mignardise tower were dry and crunchy and the veal was a little too chewy. The Epoisses cheese course was boring too.

Wonderful anniversary celebration
Our 2nd annual Anniversary dinner at Tru. This year was as outstanding as last year. We are fortunate to have such a fine dining experience in Chicago. Everything was perfect !!!

The food was beautiful and tasty, I think. Portions could be two bite sizes larger. Don't go starving. Service and presentation was outstanding.

a let down
after the closure of Ambria and Charlie Trotter's have been on a search for a replacement. This place has been around for a long time, finally decided to try it. It would have been great if the 13 courses had some link to them (other than 3 of the courses being served on wood) other than beautiful presentations that left us wondering, where in the world do you find such petite veggies, herbs and tenderloins? This was another one of those dining experiences where the chef has too much time on his hands to come up with combinations of ingredients rather than what works and has way to many assistants in the kitchen with great knife skills. Won't be back again.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is exceptional, worthy of any praise it receives. I would go so far as to say it was flawless, beautiful execution. The service is beyond reproach-- absolute perfection. A "must-do" dining experience.

Best we've ever been to.
My wife and I have eaten at exceptional restaurants all around the world. On September 14th, 2013, we had the best dining experience of our lives. I have very rarely been so inspired by a restaurant that I was motivated to write a review. You will spend a little money at Tru but it is worth every hundred. ALL of the 13 courses we had were amazing. In every dish, each ingredient was appropriately presented bringing together taste and texture combinations that were nothing short of impressive. The service was flawless. The wine pairings were perfect. Go to Tru. You won't be disappointed. Again, this was the best meal we've ever had.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Your reviewers are correct
Your reviewers are correct the portions are too small and not having the bread service seems a bit cheap.
Overall we enjoyed our meal very much and wished there was more. We had the five course menu and my husband left hungry.

Top notch fabulousness!!!
There was not one dish that was less than wonderful. Once of the very best restaurants in Chicago!
9/18/2013 5:00:00 PM
The Tru staff was outstanding. It is obvious they take pride in their work and enjoy it too. Everyone who took care of me made me feel special and like I was a regular. Our seating was great too! I do not live in Chicago but visit often and try to make Tru a part of my visit.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is the focus and is prepared superbly. Seven courses are very adequate to satisfy.

Very elegant setting with absolutely stunning service. The wine list & pairings were exquisite. We enjoyed the food, however they did lack the creativity that some Chicago tasting menus have.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved the food and presentation!
We loved the food and presentation! Each course was a delight although we preferred the cold courses over the hot dishes. All in all it was a wonderful dining experience and the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion!
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I finally made it to Tru. The museum feel is classy and modern, and the artwork is truly sensational. However, it is a bit quiet and stuffy. The food was great, although there wasn't a dish that made it truly memorable. The experience itself was memorable. Our server did seem distracted and we never bonded like we have with other places. Overall, it was an experience, but one that I doubt we will repeat.
Times are changing and my taste is too. I think I prefer more comfortable, music enriched restaurants these days.

An exceptional meal with attention to every detail from the pre dinner cocktail to the beautiful seating in the dining room with explanations of every course. We selected the 7 course experience with wine pairing and it was exquisite. We savored every bite of every course, including the extra cheese course. Unobtrusive but well orchestrated attentive service team. A memorable evening !

Great dinner, wonderful food and the best service imaginable. Worth every penny.

TRU = WOW
From start to finish, we felt very lucky indeed to be able to dine at Tru. We've heard a lot from our fellow foodies about this restaurant - it was the first reservation we sought when we knew we were traveling to Chicago. They were competing against a Bears home game, so it was a relatively quiet evening. The food was impeccably served, and the presentations were fun and somewhat innovative, particularly the pork belly with chambered smoke consomme. Jennifer Tietz is the sommelier, and she had some outstanding pairings. We were particularly impressed with the sake paired with the "Cool as a Cucumber" dish, as well as the brachetto with the wild berries dessert. The price was worth it - superb throughout.

My mother and I had the most
My mother and I had the most amazing birthday dinner. We have a yearly tradition to eat at a restaurant we splurge at and enjoy the amazing talents of the chef. We were not disappointed. Every course we beautifully presented and tasted even better.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great for a special occasion. I have dined at L2O and comparatively speaking, the food was better at L2O, but the price was also higher. The wine and the sommeleir were wonderful. He was very personable, which was great. The decor was very sparse, leaving a cold feeling.

Great experience. Some dishes were outstanding others ok, Japanese would call this a French American kaiseki.

An excellent dining experience
One of the very best dining experiences that we have enjoyed in North America. Our tasting experience was right up there with the very best French restaurants in Paris. Outstanding taste and presentation. The foie gras was fabulous.

Client dinner was a hit!
Took a group from a conference and it was a phenomenal evening. The wine pairings were great, tried new things, loved the explanations of how and why things were paired together. Everyone had a blast - would absolutely recommend TRU and will make a beeline over there the next time I'm in Chicago. Just awesome - food was delicious.

Quite an experience
We had an awesome experience at Tru. It really is a rare occasion when everything comes together...service, wine list and food were all impeccable. I'm not a big fan of stand-offish servers however. While the services was crazy good, the servers don't engage with the customer. I like to chat with them, get to know them a little. That won't happen at Tru. They do their job (very well) but thats it. Don't expect to chat them up.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good creatively and perfectly prepared. Service is the most exceptional I've experienced at any restaurant I've been at including Robuchon and French Laundry. Well done.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent
We went to Tru to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Hadn't been there since their first year. Amazing experience! If anything, it was better than I remembered. Wait staff was superb. Highly recommended.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
The meal I had at Tru was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. The service was excellent with an attentive staff which was not overbearing. There was not one course I did not love. I have dined at many fine restaurants and this is among the best I have ever been to. I look forward to returning to Tru in the future.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Each course was not only a piece of art, but builds the taste sensation. Some reviews made it seem like you'll leave hungry, but I thought the servings were just right. Excellent venue for that special occasion. Recommend the wine pairing.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
It was a truly amazing experience. The food requires a developed palette, but is very very good. The service was great. It is fancy and worth the money.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Title says it all... Service was more than wonderful, attention to our personal menu needs/desires never questioned and responded to much to our delicious delight. We will surely return!

A truly memorable experience! The Foie & tartar stole the show :)
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
We go to restaurants like this ones a year with our grown up kids. Dinner takes 3 to 4 hours and you are pampered like kings. It gives you time to relax, talk and lough in a wonderful environment. We took a tour of the kitchen and it is amazing.

Worth the trip
In town for a conference is sufficient reason to visit a few restaurants.
Been here before, so worth a revisit, the same pertains.
Great evening out
