We were celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary in DC. We are from NYC and have been to DC several times. Went to Marvins for the first time. The atmosphere and service was great. The chicken was the crispyest and tenderest breast that I have ever had and the waffles was cooked to profection. Did not put any syrup on until I noticed it on the plate. So even without the syrup at the beginning I was hooked. I look forward to trying the mussle if I can resist the urge to get chicken and waffles.

Fun find in DC
While chicken and waffles is a pretty common dish, Marvin's has tasty fried chicken; some of the best I've had. The addition of tender collard greens to the dish was a plus. We also tried a special of fried soft shell crab étouffée that was prepared perfectly. I would come back again. Food was inventive and yummy, the atmosphere fun and the drinks inventive. Great combination for a fun evening.

Good Dinner Spot
I'm a big fan of Marvin. I frequent the rooftop bar and eat here on occasion. I've always had very good meals. The server that we had was awesome. Really nice guy with dreads. No complaints here. Solid spot.

They'll take care of you
We brought a family member specifically for mussels...and didn't think to check the brunch menu, which doesn't have mussels. But thievery kind server took our request to the chef, who made two orders, right on the spot. Very flexible, and very good!!

Good food and ambience
Went there for dinner a couple of times actually. Great scallops and wonderful caramel with ice cream dessert. Entrees are not large but complete with some cooked vegetables - all at reasonable prices. Good house wine and beer. People who go there are on the younger side and seemed to be enjoying themselves. Ambience is nice and intimate.

Fantastic Food and Atmosphere
Marvin's has the best food I've had in a long time. The food is flavorful and sensual as a Marvin Gaye song! The decor is classy and laid-back and the locale is in a perfect location on the U Street Corridor. We plan to make it our 'new spot' and I highly recommend a visit.

Marvin - We Love You!
So glad you're part of the neighborhood! Food, ambiance, service are always excellent. Our last minute birthday party was amazing. Scallops, chicken and waffles, shortribs, burger all received raves from friends who had not visited in the past. Thanks to Sheila for the champagne!

What a pleasant surprise-- chose Marvin for its Creole style brunch-- they kept the menu simple-- some might be turned off by the small number of offerings-- I think was about eight or nine different dishes-- the three dishes we had as a party of three were terrific-- great kitchen-- good service a terrific experience. If you think you need 30 brunch items or a huge buffet and go somewhere else
if you like Cajun Creole breakfast/brunch-- Marvin is your place
great bloody Mary to boot!!!!

Food and Service were great but I had indicated we were celebrating my friends birthday and the restaurant did nothing special which was disappointing.

Unexpectedly awesome food in a casual, friendly, pub atmosphere

Was really tasty! French press coffee? Yes please. Mimosas were bubbly, waffle egg & bacon sandwich was great, and even the little salad on the plate was really good. Service was good & they even called to confirm my reservation when I was a minute late, looking for parking. Big fan. I'll go back again.

On Sunday afternoon, Marvin
On Sunday afternoon, Marvin was bright with sunlight through the front windows. Most of our table got the Chicken and Waffles dish, which was perfectly prepared. Many of the other menu options looked great too. Service was prompt. The restaurant wasn't overflowing with people, but the noise level got pretty high. The Mimosa du jour was delicious and staff was friendly. Great experience.

Great Beirgarden, Food was good-ish
Big fan of trying new things, here! So, here's the spiel: Biergarten, rock on, great location, 1/2 outside, 1/2 covered. Great venue for meeting up with friends, lots of room, super nice bartenders. Good Belgium beer selection, nothing outrageous, but something for everyone. Then we then proceeded downstairs for our reservation at dinner. Food was pretty good, as in better than normal, but not blow-your-mind good. High fives for the gazpacho and for their selection of fries with "toppings", so unique. You are served a cone of (yummy) fries and then a bowl of goodness (check out their selection) to dip or pair with the fries as you wish. Overall, quite good, I'd return for the biergarten, Oh, and points for the friendly, attentive staff.

food was good
The food was good and came quickly. I had the chicken and waffle. It was really good. My husband had the scallops. They were tasty and cooked just right, but there were only 4 of them.
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had a wonderful brunch w my husband and a friend. My husband and I got the unlimited mimosas which the waitress was generally good checking on...even gave us one last round as plates were cleared and we had some coffee to finish. The food was wonderful. We'd had a dinner here before but heard great things about the brunch. My huevos rancheros were nicely prepared, my husband was wild about the chicken and waffles and our friend enjoyed the breakfast burger. We would definitely come back!

Southern food with charming staff
We enjoyed shrimp and grits and waffles with chicken. Yummy! Staff were attentive and food came out with a smile. Great place to enjoy comfort food. Enjoyed listening to some oldies (not too loud) while breaking bread with family and friends.

Great for Girls Night Out
A group of 5 friends went to Marvin's for a birthday dinner. The atmosphere was fun and vibrant. The service was good and our server was very attentive. The food was good and reasonably priced. I would definitely return .
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
I visited Marvin's over the weekend with another couple. We ordered Shrimp & Grits along with Chicken Fried Oysters as an appetizer. Both dishes were great! My wife ordered a Mojito and the bartender didn't have the necessary ingredients to make it which was odd.
I've been dying to try the Country Fried Chicken and Waffles. The chicken breast is huge but they give you a little tiny cup of syrup and just a drizzle of gravy on the side. They should bring you a nice cup of gravy for that huge piece of chicken because the meal was extremely dry. Overall the place was great. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. I'll give it another shot at some point.

Cool vibe, good food
While the fried chicken and waffles, and the waffle breakfast sandwich looked amazing, I was quite happy with my egg white, black bean and salsa burrito! Delicious and moderately healthy! I admit I was shocked that a "southern" restaurant had no iced tea - not even sweet tea - must be the Belgian influence. Great spot for brunch - and I hear the party on the roof is fun in the evenings.

I had a great birthday dinner
I had a great birthday dinner here. Scallops were awesome, mussels delicious, and of course the chicken and waffles were the highlight of the evening. Yum!

(Marvin) Gaye Old Time at Marvin
Delightful dinner out for four, imaginative food, thoughtful waiter, good value. We will happily come here again. (But, no Marvin Gaye being played the entire time we were there? Music was an added bonus, very jazzy but not loud, so conversation was at a normal volume, thank you!)
9/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very loud, not a lot of menu options, didn't hear one Marvin Gaye song playing and the rooftop was overly packed. Chicken and waffles were awesome and that's about all I can really say about this place.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
soul food & good ambiance
Good food and ambiance at this u street corridor soul food spot. Try the chicken and waffles, you won't regret it.

Random Tuesday Dining
I went for dinner with a colleague and had a lovely meal. Everything was lovely. The atmosphere and service were wonderful. Highlights of the meal included our appetizers, coffee and dessert. Our entrees were good. I had the steak frites and the steak was a little tough, but I understand that the hanger steak can be less forgiving. My colleague had the duck, and it was good, just nothing spectacular. I had the French Onion soup which really was Delicious, excellent flavor and presentation was lovely. My colleague had the shrimp and grits, the portion size was great and the grits were silky and flavorful. We shared the toffee cake and a french press. Simply amazing. The toffee cake was perfect and the coffee..oh the coffee, a perfect finish

Visited from Chicago and my girlfriend took me for the first time. The food was outstanding and service was in point. The chicken fried oysters were incredible!!!
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
I selected Marvin's to dine with another couple just to talk and catch up. The service was great. The server seemed knowledgable about the menu and was able to answer questions and give the specials for the evening. The food was good, a little lukewarm for my taste (I prefer hot) but tolerable. I had the special which was a lamb shank served over mashed potatoes and greens. The greens were bitter but the potatoes and shank were good. The fried oyster appetizer was outstanding. I would go back but try another entree.

I grew up in the 60s & 70s and R&B was my genre of choice. Marvin sent me back to those days! Whats better than good music and good food! I had my first chicken and waffles there and will be in the pursuit to find more places that offer it. Great place for brunch

Who Would of Thought
Who would of thought by the look of Marvin's casual laid back appearance, that the food would be 5 star quality! I took some friends up from Miami FL to Marvin's this past Friday, through a recommendation from a friend. Though the menu is not vast, which is a good thing in my opinion, there is plenty to choose from. My party ordered LOBSTER WATERZOOI, DUCK CONFIT, STEAK FRITES and MARVIN BURGER. Everything was just superbly prepared. The presentation of the food deserved to be photographed and displayed in Washingtonian Magazine! But most importantly, the flavors were extraordinary. I truly can go on and on about Marvin's, but there is a character limit on this review and I am running out of characters! LOL! You'll have to see for yourself

Loved the Chicken & Waffles
I've only been here for brunch once, but the chicken and waffles were delicious.they come with greens that were the best I have had in a while. I also ordered the cheese grits and almost had a Meg Ryan moment from When Harry Met Sally. Our server was kind and prompt and kept the bottomless mimosas flowing. My glass was never empty. Overall it was a grat place to eat and I will definitely be back!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
So DC is really good with doing bottomless brunches so I checked out Marvin's offering. They too did the bottomless mimosa offering $15 with an entree purchase. The chicken, waffles and collard greens plate was fantastic! The play on tastes was a surprising delight, the chef really knew what he was doing. The only thing I think could improve would be the temperature of the food, it could have been hotter, I was a little disappointed the chicken was served hot.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Marvin was a great outing for my wife and I the customer service was outstanding. The atmosphere was amazing, the food selection was different and interesting and very good. I will visit this spot again and recommend it to my friends or anyone else.

Nice birthday celebration
We had a party of 7 celebrating my parents wedding anniversary and my father's 70th birthday. I'm glad we made the reservation for 6pm because it was very noisy after 7/7:30pm. Other than the restaurant being a little too dark, I found the ambiance to be very good. Our food was very good. Most of us had the chicken fried oysters for appetizers and chicken and waffles for the entree. The service was good. I would recommend that more Marvin Gaye and/or Motown music be played since the restaurant is named in honor of Marvin Gaye. My 70-year old father was looking forward to hearing that kind of music, but that did not happen.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
We used to live on V Street, but since moving to family friendlier Brookland we don't get over to this side of town much. Clearly, there are a ton of restaurants to choose from but Marvin has a special place in our hearts. It was where we ate dinner with our family the night before my husband's radiation surgery, it's where we just went on one of our last big date nights before D-Day (I'm 8 months pregnant). We have gathered there with friends for special occasions, or our birthdays, or just because. I only ever eat the mussels there and my husband only ever gets the chicken and waffles, but you know what? We're never disappointed. I think it's a great place for creatures of habit and new diners alike. Go early as it's a bit quieter.

Heard It Through the Grapvine!
Marvin's is truly a neighborhood gem! I love the chicken and waffles!

Great meal and service
My family went to celebrate October birthdays. It's a cool place with a great vibe. It was loud though. Food was super and our waiter was too.

Marvin after church
Good brunch spot. I had shrimp& grits which was fantastic. The chicken & waffles look good too. Reasonable prices, a little noisy.
11/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Chicken and Waffles
The chicken was absolute perfection: crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The waffles were a bit chewy, but the perfection of the chicken made up for that.
11/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
More than decent but, like
More than decent but, like so many DC restaurants, the noise level is annoying. NYC restaurants invest in noise/echo reduction why can't any in DC? There's a price to pay for high ceilings.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great for guests
Had an old friend in town from Manhattan for a few days. Wanted to show him that DC can be every bit as hip and sophisticated as New York. Marvin delivered. Great food, wine, cocktails, and service. Also nice to have a liquid dessert upstairs afterward - bypassing the line of 50 ppl on the sidewalk.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
I made the reservation a day in advance, many slots were open but the i choose the place because of the reviews and location. It was not packed and we didnt really need the reservation but since we were 8 ppl. The service, food and drinks were great. The place wasnt packed so we got all what we needed pretty fast. For what we needed this place was great.

Great for brunch
We made a res for Marvin at 10:30am on a cold Sunday & were the first to be seated. It was empty when we arrived but slowly filled up; by the time we left, there was a line of folks waiting for tables. I had the waffle breakfast sandwich, which was simultaneously soft & crunchy, perfect dipped in syrup; my boyfriend had the biscuits & gravy, which were not quite the down-home cozy meal he hoped for. Still, everything was delicious, plus BOTTOMLESS MIMOSAS. As it got busier, our mimosas came more slowly because there was only one server on duty. Still, he was friendly & working hard, so we tried not to be bothered. In the end, it was $30 each including tip, which isn't bad at all for a tasty breakfast & four mimosas apiece. We'll be back!

French onion soup
there were many things I liked about Marvin - but most of all the French onion soup!
