The feel of the restaurant
The feel of the restaurant is wonderful, very old San Francisco. The tables are spaced somewhat far apart so the noise level is quiet and you can enjoy the conversation of your dinner party. Great place to go before seeing a show at the Orpheum!

Great convenient location
Great convenient location for meals before and after a show at the Orpheum theatre --which is right across the street and off civic center BART station as well.

The online menu is outdated--
The online menu is outdated-- some of the prices are not correct, and there were a lot more items on the online menu than when we went there. Food was great, but I was looking forward to one of the items that was on the online menu, but wasn't offered in the restaurant.

Our pre-theater group of six
Our pre-theater group of six people were happy with our meal, service, and location near the Orpheum Theater. The lamb chops and asparagus were very flavorful but barely warm when served. We allotted 1.5 hours for service but still did not have time for dessert before heading across the street to the theater.

Good pretheater restaurant
As a preballet dining place it is actually quite convenient. Good food and very good service. A shorter menu but with good offerrings. They don't dally, which is good a pretheater restaurant. Nice apacing on the tables so you have some privacy. Small number but well selected wines by the glass.

Ideal Pre-Symphony Spot
We planned to attend the 7 pm lecture before the concert at Davies Hall, and made it in plenty of time. Only 1 in the party ordered a salad, but the staging was timed perfectly, with entrees arriving moments after the salad was consumed. All 3 courses were tasty and well-prepared. The server was attentive without hovering. The only negative note was a language problem. 1 member of the party asked if the Chilean Sea Bass was sustainable, knowing that the fish is on the "watch list." The server clearly didn't understand the question, but went to ask the chef. When he returned, the chef's reply made it clear that either he didn't understand the question either, or the server mangled the query. It's a simple question - "fished or farmed?"

Notes from an out of towner .......
I live in Georgia currently, but lived in Sonoma County for twenty plus years. While in town for a wedding, I had the opportunity to have lunch with a newly found lady friend. The grill was perfect for he as she worked just a block away (a bit hectic for me tho since I am not used to the traffic, tourist and lack of parking. But we both thoroughly the moment. And the grill was perfect with the food, service and location. Thanks. Tim Coffey

Good food, good service, reasonable
Good food, good service, reasonable prices, pleasant and quiet. We were there for early lunch before the Asian Art Museum and enjoyed it very much.

Actually, pre-Jazz Center. Waiter inquired first thing if we were going to a show and needed a timely meal. The food was quite good. Burrata on the Caprese Salad was amazing. Crab Cake was delicious as was the Carbonara and the clam chowder with smoky bacon. We were not at all rushed and had plenty of time to make our show.

Locally sourced food
Small but nicely selected menu - freshly prepared and tasty - price is totally reasonable for quality of food items - we had spaghetti w/Sicilian sausage in tomato sauce - spaghetti all dente and sauce nicely spicy;; lamb chops - very tender in a crispy herb rub;; Scottish salmon - perfect crust not overcooked w/fresh veggies; wild mushroom ravioli - very tasty. Portions not excessive. Wine list is acceptable with a few good by the glass offerings - nice bottles if you're a few people sharing. Quiet atmosphere - as food is freshly prepared it does take a bit of time - if in a hurry do advise staff and things will move along more efficiently. They did have Bushmill's Irish whiskey - great. Definitely well above average hotel dining.

Market Street Grill was delightful and I will return for pre-opera or symphony meals. Our waiter asked without prompting if we had a performance time to meet. He kept things moving at an appropriate pace. We did not feel at all rushed, nor nervous about our show time. The food was delicious. I had the Salmon Saffron, very tasty and nicely cooked. My wife had the lamb chops and declared them excellent. I will add that we are fussy and don't hand out "very good" ratings easily. The wine list was interesting and had a good range of prices. The location, on Market between 8th and 9th, is not the most luxurious block, but is just a few minutes walk from Davies Hall, the War Memorial Building and the Asian Art Museum. I will return.

We were looking for some place reasonably close to Davies Symphony Hall with a good menu and reasonable prices... and we found it. We were there very early and had a relaxing drink in the bar served by a friendly and knowledgeable bartender. When we asked if we could move up our reservation it was no problem and again service was excellent and food was fantastic. Corn soup was perfection. My friend had the lamb chops which she raved about and I had the Tangerine Chicken .. also very yummy. Highly recommended! Only downside is the parking .. but that's no surprise in SF. Although we had prepaid for parking at Davies we had to pay another $20 to part in the "public" lot at the hotel in which the restaurant is located. But it was worth it!

A surprise on mid-Market
An underutilized restaurant with very good food, perfect for meeting with friends or "working" lunch. Prior to tech boom was always busy with City & State workers,.
Ambiance is casual elegance, clean, prices were very reasonable for San Francisco. Salads were fresh, the corn soup was outstanding, the Dungeness crab sandwich was described as delicious!
There was only one other occupied table at our 12:30 reservation, given the cost and so-so quality of other hotel restaurants, this is a neighborhood "gem".

great pre-show venue
Directly across the street from the Orpheum Theatre, this restaurant is perfect. Our chops entree was excellent as was the apple tart with ice cream dessert. Service was sporatic since the pre-show crowd shows up about 6pm and the servers seem a bit overwhelmed or the kitchen is slow. Dining room very comfortable.

Unassuming quaint cafe
Needed a quiet place to eat before our Matinee at the Orpheum. We live out of town and drove in for the event. Didn't want to drive around so we parked at the Civic Center parking and walked to the Hotel Whitcomb where the Market Cafe was located. We were thrilled that the theater was across the street, now we could have a leisurely lunch and glass of wine with our meal. The chairs were upholstered in an English Fox hunt theme and room had the ambiance of an English Countryside Inn. There was a large decorative art sign noting that bicyclists are welcome. Our waitperson was very pleasant and the food was excellent. I had a coconut crusted chicken salad. It was wonderful. I would recommend the restaurant to all.

Great Food and Service
We thought the food was excellent. Compliments to the chef. My mom had ordered the crab cake and she said it was the best she ever had. I had the Black Cod and it was cooked to perfection. The accompanying side dishes were delicious.
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have been looking for a nice restaurant within walking distance of the opera, symphony, and theater and now I have the perfect place. Everything about our experience was excellent. I will definitely dine there again.

Theater and handicap access
We look for restaurants that have wheelchair (power) access. The Market Street grill is accommodating and conveniently close to the theater, Orpheum and BART. I wish there was more variety around the Orpheum.

We were totally surprised
We were totally surprised at the quality of the food, the excellent service and the upscale atmosphere. I had the ahi salad which was fabulous. We will be back!

great dining if going to Orpheum.
The restaurant is within 2 minutes walking distance of The Orpheum if you are going to see a musical there. You might have to wait a few minutes if go to a matinee as dinner starts at 5:00pm, but there is bar with some seating available while you wait. The food was exceptional and what one would expect from a restaurant tied into a fancy hotel. Extremely convenient for anybody that takes BART into the city as the Civic Center/UN Plaza station is right outside both the theatre and the restaurant. We would definitely consider going again before or after a performance.

lunch before play
We had a great lunch before attending a play at the Orpheum Theater. Very friendly and attentive staff and the food was great.

For before the show meals
We've been here before. The menu usually doesn't change much, but this time the wild mushroom ravioli had been displaced, much to my wife's chagrin. The food is extremely well prepared and the selection is reasonable. The winelist is only average. The only negative was service this time. Not much attention to detail and very few check backs. It's definitely a place worth trying.

Civic Center Gem
As someone that is extremely spoiled given that I am able to eat at all of the 5 star restaurants but given that some of us like to work and eat near the seat of government this is a real neighborhood gem. The restaurant staff is second to none. The food is great and its always served with one thing in mind and one thing only....are you enjoying your meal and how can I make it an even better experience. They practice customer satisfaction all day long! The servers are the very best! The chef menu leaves nothing to wish for! I enjoy it for either business or pleasure! Business this allows for an atmosphere conducive to real discussion of any kind.

Market St Grill was terrific - great service, interesting food with local, fresh touches, and terrific ambiance. We sat next to a roaring fire, watching the vibrant street scene, and had a perfect seafood carbonara, with lots of lobster, and the best crab cake ever.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our family of four had reservations. My son had the clam chowder and caesar salad which he enjoyed. My daughter had the chicken salad sandwich and she also enjoyed her meal. Husband had the grilled ahi sandwich with a salad and I had the lobster roll with sweet potato fries. We both enjoyed our meals. We had very attentive servers. It was a busy theatre day. The chef came to the table after our meal and asked me why I didn't eat my brioche roll with my lobster salad (sandwich style) and I explained I wanted less carbs and he said next time just ask to have the lobster salad on a bed of lettuce instead and they would have no problem making it more of a salad for me. Overall we had a very nice experience for our lunch before the theatre!

Across Street from Orpheum Theater
Food was great. Menu had lots of culinary favorites ranging from clam chowder, caesar salad, crab cakes, steak, fish, lamb, pasta, etc.) Went with my daughter (16) and she thought it was very fancy. Nice wines. Lots of couples. Looked like a lively bar area. Located in a historical building, across from Orpheum Theater. We booked reservation 1.5 hours prior to performance and timing was perfect.

Grab a bite before a matinee show
The restaurant is across the street from the Orpheum theater. We had a party of 8. We were seated right away, and the server asked if we were going to the theater - so she could make sure we were out in time. The lunch choices were standard lunch fare - everyone enjoyed their meals.

Just moved from NYC
My wife and I just moved to the SF Bay area and this was our first evening out. We were looking for a fine dining experience near the SF Symphony and could not be more pleased with our choice. The food was very, very good. We had excellent starters of mixed crudo plate and wonderful mussel and chorizo dish. I highly recommend the potato crusted trout and my wife enjoyed the delicious and very rich special of dungeness crab carbonara.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I went to the Market Street Grill before attending a show nearby and were both impressed with our meals. I had lamb chops and she had the chicken. Both dishes were superb. The service was excellent as well.
While the menu is limited, based on our experience, that translated into time and care in the preparation and presentation that made for a memorable meal.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
great service, excellent menu
Market Street Grill provides a surprisingly warm, welcoming, cozy restaurant in what can be a funky area. You feel like you are in a nice living room, and it makes you want to linger for a while and savor the delicious food. Good choices - something for everyone - meat, chicken, fish, and vegetarian. Truffle fries are a nice touch. We had very attentive service.

We had 5:30 reservations before going to see Book of Mormon. We were seated promptly, the service was very good, and the food was delicious.

Great pre theater spot
They are friendly, efficient, care about our dining experience and after several visits, I can say they are perfect at timeliness before a play at the Orpheus, or even golden gate theater.

Good food. Don't order dessert.
We had a nice time (again) at Market Street Grill. The location is perfect across the street from the Orpheum Theater and the staff works hard to get your meal out in time for you to attend a show. The salads and all our entrees' were excellent. The Lobster Mac and Cheese and Salmon entrees tasted fresh and flavorful. The chef is nice about accomodating special requests. Do not order dessert! It was clearly not house-made, and one item even had a slight taste of freezer burn. Wine selection is good and reasonably priced so you can afford a bottle with dinner.
11/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very convenient for dinner
Very convenient for dinner before a show at the Orpheum--my son loved the winter menu lamb chops-my new york steak was perfectly cooked--the mushroom ravioli is very good--a little pricey but expected in San Francisco--attentive service--

Market Street Grill a gem
It was a lovely surprise to have the most delicious salmon entree I've ever had at Market St.Grill. It's a perfect pre and post Theater restaurant and one that would work for people trying to connect over a good meal.
The historic aspect and decor were special. Our server was congenial and efficient. Very classy.
I will be returning as will my friends.
