The wine service was outstanding. The server kept recommending wines based on what we were already enjoying. A real treat. The halibut was solid, but the restaurant was so conducive to conversation that we were't as attentive to the food as we should have been. The seating was not as crowded as other reviewers have noted.

My husband and I recently went to Mare during a weekend trip to Boston. This was one of the best seafood meals I have ever had in my life! Everything was delicious and the service was wonderful. We had mussels from the raw bar and scallops to start. For the main course we had the halibut (Amazing! The sauce was so good!) and tuna steak. I would strongly recommend this restaurant for someone looking to have a nice, romantic seafood dinner. You will not be disappointed.

Very Enoyable Evening
My wife and I had a great experience this weekend at Mare. The food, ambience, and service were all excellent.
My only 2 minor complaints are:
1) Not having a full bar
2) A little over priced - I would come to Mare much more often if the prices were a little more reasonable, specifically the appetizers and side orders. Because of the prices, I only go to Mare on special occasions.

Great food and great service.
Great food and great service. The staff was even able to move our reservation up despite a very busy crowd.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food and atmosphere are
The food and atmosphere are both wonderful at Mare! Our server was way too solicitous! He hovered around us constantly and would not leave us alone which drove my husband crazy! :-( The Crudo appetizer was outstanding! The sardines are very special, and you really can't get them anywhere else! The Swordfish entrée was excellent! My girlfriend loved her locally caught striped bass special.

North End gem
Great selection of oysters! I had the braised wild boar with pasta....excellent! All six of us thought it was a great find. Very walkable to Quincey Market area.

We had reservations here last night and were seated right away. Our waiter was attentive and very accommodating to an allergy I have. He checked with the chef and adjusted my meal to avoid the allergen. We ordered the lobster cocktail for an appetizer. It was light, delicious and a generous portion. I had salmon and my husband had swordfish. Both were fresh and very tasty. The whole staff was extremely friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend Mare!
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
very good food. a bit pricey
very good food. a bit pricey since a salad and sides with the main meal were not included. My swordfish was very good though.
8/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurants pops with people and conversation. Do not go if you want cozy and romantic.
I had a truffle crusted tuna that I still dream about. However, my companion wanted just a steamed lobster but had to settle for stuffed.
That was the only criticism. Reservation was on time, food excellent, service great.
8/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very nice place
It is very good food but small place and long waits to get in even with a reservation. The hostess, Amelia, was pretty rude at first but became nicer as she saw our agitation at having to wait while people who did not have a reservation went in first. The food is very good and their stuffed lobster is enormous. Great raw bar also. Just be prepared to wait.

Lots of fish in the sea
High quality seafood in a variety of preparations, mostly Italian inspired but some 'fusion' choices.
Scallops were delicious, some other courses had an excessively developed direction (too much pickle in the octopus salad, too much garlic on the Grigliata do Pesce). Had some excellent Italian whites by the glass to complement that.
Crowded and normslly on the loud side but very pleasant with all windows open. Reservations advised.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
This little restaurant in the North End occupies a corner space overlooking the vibrant neighborhood life. Its floor to ceiling windows provide a lovely evening view. My husband and I went here for our anniversary dinner and have only wonderful things to say about the ambience. The food, however, did not quite have the same quality as the atmosphere. The seafood was average compared with other seafood restaurants in Boston. The wine and ambience was above par.
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was exceptional as was the service. Limited bar in terms of spirits creating non tradtional drinks (no vodka martini), but they had martini's with flavored vodkas.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had a great meal. Was pretty
Had a great meal. Was pretty loud so if you want to have an intimate discussion it would be tough. Also, didn't realize they didn't have a full liquor license but the wine list was good.
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is great but...
The food was outstanding. However, the overall ambience does not contribute to a positive dining experience. The restaurant is far too crowded and extremely noisy - we were at a table for 2 and could not carry on a normal conversation across the table. It was so loud that it really took away from the dining experience. In addition, our table was not ready when we arrived and we had to wait 20 minutes - fortunately there was 1 (ONE) seat at the bar so half of us could sit.
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very good service and reasonable
Very good service and reasonable price for seafood. The raw oysters were fresh and tasty. The appertizers and tuna entree were outstanding. We wil visit again.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went mid afternoon on a Saturday. I had heard it was noisy, crowded and could be hot and that the wait staff was at times inattentive. Our experience was completely the opposite. The service was impeccable. Our waiter was very knowlegeable, helpful and attentive. The AC was on, the place was about half full but there were plenty of people working so that if it was full and busy i would believe our service would have been just as good. The food was superb. The fried oyster appetizer was exquisite and the jumbo shrimp cocktail was truly jumbo but the shrimp were still tender. The main courses, the Risotto di Mare and the Halibut were cooked perfectly and presented well. The chocolate ganache dessert was sublime. We will be returning soon.

Amazing! Best in Boston.
This is my favorite restaurant in Boston, by far. It has fresh oysters, amazing food (I recommend the Wild Boer Pappardelle), great wine and the best dessert menu in the North End (I highly, highly recommend the Panna Cotta).
The ambience is great. Perfect lighting, cozy and classy settings, and just the right level of chatter. The location is also great. If you're looking the spend the night strolling around the North End, Mare is the best place to start.
The only downside is that the restaurant is a little small and can get busy (a good sign). Patrons have a tendency to stay long (another good sign) so even if you have a reservation, be prepared to wait a bit. Also, the restaurant is a little pricey, but don't worry - it's worth it.

Excellent food, tight table spacing
We had the lobster roll hot, which was outstanding. Good wine list. We were there on Tuesday night, so it was not crowded. But if we were packed in with diners at the neighboring tables it would have seemed crowded for a table for two, as other diners have suggested. If you have more than two in your group, then you would sit at a table in the middle of the room, which is not crowded. So go early on a weeknight if you can.
9/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
I used to go to Mare all the time, but now it's tougher since I moved to Denver. Whenever I get trip back to Boston, I include a visit here. Top notch service, wine selection, and food. The seafood and meals taste like each ingredient was freshly picked that day. The taste combinations are innovative and savory. I took work colleagues this past time and every loved it. A great experience!
9/4/2013 5:00:00 PM
Loved the seafood, lobsters, oysters, swordfish, halibut -- all fresh and expertly prepared. Thought it was a bit odd that they don't have a full liquor license (they sell beer, wine and flavored liquors).
Service was stretched a little thin, but very knowledgeable and hard working.

North End Seafood
For our trip to Boston, we were looking for fresh seafood. When I saw a seafood restaurant in the North End knew it would have to be good to survive in an area with countless great Italian restaurants. Also. When I ask concierge at hotel he too recommended this place. Great selection of oysters and fresh seafood. Small place as most are in North End and loud. Oyster were good. We only had appetizers but they were also good. Had reservations and they accommodated us early. Would recommend reservations. Great seafood with an Italian flare!

A great Open Table find
A treat. The lobster cocktail appetizer was perfect and we will definitely go back.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
The best oysters in all of Boston. Clean, crisp, buttery, sweet. All the right adjectives.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Awesome as Usual
Mare is off the beaten path in the North End of Beantown. Its top notch service and food keep me coming back again and again. Don't miss this wonderful dining experience and ask for Antonio if you want one of the best wait staff you'll ever meet.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was spectacular. The restaurant was a long wait for the table even with a reservation and there wasn't much room at the bar to wait., however the food was worth the wait. We are still talking about it and how great everything was. The service was great as well with friendly and competent staff. Everyone wanted to go back and do it again, so next time in Boston we will be back. Loud...but then so are my friends so it didn't bother us at all.

Four Times a Winner!
We enjoyed Mare for our 4th time last evening, which happened to be our 31st anniversary. Though we have not been in about 18 months it has actually become even better than we remember.
Though I did not mention our anniversary in the reservation, I did ask for a window seat if possible. We were delighted to know our request was honored and had the lone table in window bay corner - fabulous!
We started with the oysters and were convinced they were some of the best we had ever had. Appetizers were wonderful as well, though a little pricey.
For our entrees, the wife had the halibut and I opted for the Striped Bass Special - both were outstanding!
If you like seafood then you must try Mare - cheers to Frank P.

Great food not cheap
Fantsatic seafood in the North End of boston with a handful of seafood oriented pasta dishes. The halibut, salmon, and appetizers were the stars of the show. The whole fish had so many bones, my husband spent the night picking them out of his teeth (yuk!) The seafood canelloni is good, but needs much more sauce (lobster sauce) so it can be a bit dry. The wines vary in price, some of the better wines are not the most expensive (an excellent priorat for ex). The desserts were only so so, save your sweet tooth for Mike's around the corner. Dinner with wine will cost about 80-90/per person
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
great raw bar
Food was very nice, a bit noisy, but it's a small, intimate spot.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
The restaurant is small and
The restaurant is small and several two seaters can make you feel a little awkward, especially on a first date, but the food and Italian wine list is amazingly good.I recommend sitting at the bar if you don't mind loosing the white linens, etc. Tuna tartare and oysters are the best I've had in years!
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fabulous oyster selection
Both the list of oysters and the wine list are extensive. The seafood menu offers everything from simple pasta dishes to daily grilled fish specials. Wonderful place.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good for all occasions
I've taken clients here, I've taken my wife here, and it's never disappointed. It's got that North End vibe without feeling like I'm playing tourist. Food, service, wine, atmosphere all seem to come together.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great night, great food!
We celebrated our anniversary here and got a great window seat. It was much smaller inside that I expected which was a good thing since it was very intimate. It was a wonderful experience. The drinks were good and the food was excellent. I got the hallibut in a clam chowder sauce. It was amazing. My husband got the grilled seafood platter. I thought it was good but a bit plain. We would definitely go back.

North End Gem
The corner location set the tone that Mare offers a different dining experience. Walking in to the well designed layout with wrap-around floor to cieling sliding windows, providing the maximum use of limited space, and still allowed for a feeling of intimacy. The raw bar selections reflect the attention to freshness one expects from a big seafood town, (yet some other restaurants fail to achieve). Friends who dined here recently implored me to try the pasta and truffels, and I am so glad I did. The pasta, which is made fresh daily "just down the street" from Mare, was aldente and had the perfect amount of pocini cream and truffels. Everyone at the table raved about the appitizers, entrees, and desserts and a fine selection of wines.

Amazing food. Ordered the maine lobster and some rounds of oysters. Wow!!

Great North End Seafood
Small, very busy spot in North End. Even with 930 res, had to wait about 1/2 hour. Hostess offered to call when table available. Oysters were terrific, every bit as good as Island Creek. Entrees were varied and well prepared. Wine list was good mix, with a lot of well-priced Italian wines. Highly recommended.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Mare is correctly named.
This is a SEAFOOD restaurant. If you a re looking for meat, go somewhere else, but if you like your protein in seafood form, this is the place for you. Most importantly, the food was very good, and I thought the lobster casserole showed some imagination. The staff is friendly. Although we were 30 minutes early and there was no table ready, the hostess made us feel welcome (rather than the usual, "why are you here early" scornful stare). The wine list is extensive, with some good micro brew beers available, but the liquor at the bar is limited. The tables are CLOSE. You can converse easily enough, or you can listen to the conversations at the neighboring tables. On the whole, we liked it.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurant is one of my favorites, however I had reservations for 8:00 and they were running one hour behind. When finally seated the food and service were great. Our waiter was very knowledgable about food and wine and recommended a great pairing.
The noise level is quite loud and seating very close. So don't expect a quiet romantic dinner. Do expect a great meal and service.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
No more Mare
The oysters were stellar. The bib salad was delicious. Both the gnocchi and linguini with clams were disappointing.
Our table felt tight. Our server was attentive but for the price, the over all dining experience was not amazing. Too many other restaurants to give this one another try.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Wonderful seafood. The service was excellent. I would have liked a wine list that had new world wine choices, however our waiter was able to offer my favorite chardonnay that was not on the wine list.

From the moment you hit the door, you are treated well. Service was excellent and the food spectacular!!

Amazing food and great service
I just visited Mare for a special occasion dinner and it turned out to be one of the best meals I've had in Boston. The food was spectacular and the service was outstanding, I highly recommend and will be back soon myself!
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
We went for the oysters and ended up eating seafood!
We ordered the Tomato Bufala appetizer which was very tasty.
Also had the Lobster casserole which was good, just a tad o the bread side.
The Branzini was delicious but came with ho-hum potatoes.
Pannacotta and expresso martini were both perfect.
We would go there again, it was very comfortable with great windows all around 2 sides, altho a small place.
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Seafood was very good
This restaurant was well known for it's seafood and it did not disappoint. It was fresh and cooked well. Definitely should check it out if you enjoy shellfish or just fish in general.

Some of the BEST seafood in Boston
This was the second time coming here for my husband and I and once again we were blown away by the food. The selection of oysters and raw bar items is great. My husband tried a couple of new oysters while I went straight for the crab cocktail which was delicious. Our server was very accommodating and had the chef put the cream sauce for the crab cocktail on the side for me. For dinner both of us choose to try something new; Zuppa De Mare for me and Lobster Casserole for my husband. Both dishes were divine! This time we had an early dinner(5pm before the Bruins game) so the place was still pretty quiet. It can get a little packed later on in the night but nothing beyond whats normal for any of the little North end restaurants.

We had a fabulous dinner.
We had a fabulous dinner. Randomly got the corner table for 2 by the window. Best seats in the restaurant. Great food and the fried oysters were to die for. Knew lots of wines on the wine list and they were way overpriced - at least by Virginia standards.. Jordan for example was $128 which you can buy at Total Wine for under $50. Waiter was delightful.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Limited menu but very good
Limited menu but very good food. Restaurant is very small and tight. We felt a little crowded and warm. They did put air on when requested. We were early, planned to have a drink at the bar. Bar was very small and crowded, but luckily our table was ready, so we had a drink and took our time before ordering. A little pricey but comparable to others in area.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great food, tough parking
Food was terrific; portions ample overall except for the baked stuffed clams (not even bite-size). Bibb lettuce salad, baked stuffed lobster, wild boar pappardelle, halibut all great. We had a 6pm reservation on a Sunday night; After circling many times looking for a parking space, we finally asked the restaurant about valet parking. They directed us to their sister restaurant, Bricco. Upon arriving at Bricco, we were told they do not park for Mare, and they sent us to a lot down the road which told us was $14 and 'less expensive than valet', but in reality the cost for this lot was $25. Our server made an apology but the restaurant did not comp anything on our bill ($270 before tip) which we believe they should have done.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Delicious food, smaller portions
Restaurant was happy to accommodate my vegetarian request to remove the roe from potato gnocchi, even though it's primarily a seafood restaurant. The portions were a little small, but delicious.
