Top notch sushi for Edmonton
I originally thought it would be crazy expensive but it was not as I thought. I went there for a birthday dinner with family and we were able to try a lot of different dishes because each dish was small enough. It's definitely great for sharing. I recommend the Love crunch sushi and Halo both very good. I also recommend trying the beef on the hot stone. Although they say it's kobe beef which if outside Japan is highly unlikely it's still pretty good beef, very tender and I've actually had kobe beef in Japan. This is definitely a must try restaurant, and worth the money. I was not impressed with the matcha creme brule. It was not smooth and did not taste like creme brule. Do try the mochi ice cream.

Fresh and expensive
This place has some of the freshest fish in the city. Though you may need to spend $100/person to feel full, I would recommend Ichiban and other sushi places for more regular meals. I started with the Tuna Tataki and continued with the sashimi and sushi which were very fresh. I ended with the standard chocolate cheese cake. I washed it down with a large Asahi. The notables were the Tuna Belly, Squid & eggs, and white tuna.

not your regular sushi.
I was impressed with the amount of different offerings on the menu. Plenty of dishes that I haven't tried along with a lot of more familiar options. More than enough to warrant a second visit. The service was excellent, and the food itself was very good. I particularly like the honey plum tuna and the beef tataki.

Fantastic lunch Omakase
We tried the $20 Omakase (ie. "up to the chef) for lunch and it was incredibly delicious and an outstanding value! It gave the chefs a chance to showcase a few different items on the menu and next time I think I will request for some more off-menu type items to let them be really creative.
The Omakase came out as a juiced up version of a bento box (the comparison is in the most complimentary way possible). Items included chicken karaage - ask for ginger dipping sauce, tuna tataki, seafood ceviche, 3 pieces of sashimi, miso soup, 2 raw oysters, HALF of a charbroiled yellow tail and rice. Presentation was very nice and great flavors through all the dishes.
Highly recommend doing the lunch Omakase...call ahead so they can prepare for you.

A nice twist on regular sushi
I eat a lot of sushi. I love it. When I first looked at the menu, I went right to that section, but we decided to try a few different things and asked the server what her favourites were. The Prairie fire was great, and the mango one (can't remember name) was even better. I'd order two of those next time. The yellowtail appetizer was mediocre - would have been better raw and thinner. A warning for anyone who loves (or is afraid of ) jalapeños. They are on a few of the dishes but they lack any kick at all. They actaully have very little taste to them. So if you love a little spice you will be disappointed or if you worried about something being too hot with jalapeños they are not. Service was extremely good. I'd go back for sure.

Second time a charm
Yes we went back to Japonais Bistro -- you know just to make sure it was consistent - this time in the evening - well it was great again we brought friends with us and they also loved it -- the plates presentation are fantastic -- really appealing and beautiful and everything are fresh and tasty --
This is now our new favorite sushi place in town ..

Probably the Best Sushi in Edmonton
Innovative and delicious food. Service leaves a bit to be desired. Wagyu beef appetizer wasn't fantastic for the price & portion size.

Unique Japanese food
A little on the expensive side but the food is always fresh. There are dishes that other Japanese restaurants don't have like the tuna nachos or new style roll. If you're looking for something different japonais bistro would be a good choice.
