Spatze with lamb and Wurstknödel
Spatze with lamb and Wurstknödel were terrific, and we enjoyed both of our salads, but the highlight was the poached huckleberry dessert!

One of my favorite places
One of my favorite places in all of Manhattan. Great beers and great food. Posters and decor are terrific. Great first date place.

Both food and service were excellent. Unfortunately the noise factor disturbed any conversation we were trying to have. The acoustics should be fixed by lowering the wonderfully high ceiling.

Outstanding cuisine and service, love the decor and the casual atmosphere, thinking of having a group of us along next time... Big fan of the Neue and Cafe Sabarsky so I love all the art posters to look to while dining... plan on stopping in again soon. Truly a gem in TriBeCa.

Great food, poor service
It was good overall, service staff not very attentive. We ate at the bar for the convinience of it, Bartender disappeared for a while, so we waited for drinks a little long even though the place was not busy at all, and there was not much going on. I used to run a high volume place in the city, I would probably have reprimand the bartender, she could have sold us another round of drinks, another bottle of sparking water, and desert because she was never there to ask; a total of $ 50 loss in revenue from us, if multiply by 5 people a day is $250 loss per day, and if she is in that habit that will a monthly loss of $7500, and $90,000 yearly. Poor management is expensive! The food was outstanding, too bad the staff is so poorly trained.

A Taste of the Old Country
The food was great and authentic. My friend told me that it was much better than the Austrian restaurant she tried before. The bar keep and waiters were friendly and helpful in making recommendations.

They've raised the prices
They've raised the prices substantially across the board, so it's no longer the comfortable spot for a weekly visit but now a place for an occasional splurge. I'm not sure it's now worth the cost. Too bad.

Austria in NYC
Wonderful Austrian bistro, better than getting on a plane and flying to Vienna.

Great Dinner Out Front
Took advantage of a sultry late-spring Sunday evening to enjoy Austrian cuisine on Duane Street. We ordered the avocado and crab appetizer, which came cradled on four spoons. About what you'd expect, hard to go wrong. For my main, I had a smoked trout tart with horseradish, again what you'd expect. My friend's main was the backhendl, chicken prepared like schniztel. It was good, though the bones were annoying (but the meat was juicy). We had the Stadlmann Rotgipfler of 2011, a mineral-y wine that went well with our dishes. It was the waiter's suggestion AND the cheapest wine on the menu and we really liked it, so win-win-win. Dessert was apricot blintzes, we adored them. Bill came to $120 pre-tip ($44 of which was the wine).

We have been to Blaue Gans several times and the food and staff have always been amazing. Delicious German cuisine, beer and wine!

The best German/Austrian food
The best German/Austrian food West of Germany. This is truly German cuisine at it's best: Fantastic, original veal Schnitzel and Gulasch. Great beer selection and wine selection, too.

Awesome Food and Drink!
We started coming here a couple of years ago once my husband saw this gem on a job. Ever since, it's been on the top of our list for relaxing and sharing good times, with good food and friends! The place is truly a gem!

Authentic & Delicious
I prefer the fall/winter menu more so than the summer. But the summer dishes are of course delicious, just not as meat-extensive!
6/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
I think we could best describe Blaue Gans as a neighborhood gem. Lots of regulars hang out there and so do we! The menu offers a great variety of Austrian food and I am always looking forward to some of their dishes. My weak point is definitely the Spaetzle, and a couple of their desserts. It is refreshing, artsy and European...
Long live Blaue Gans!!

Food was terrific! Bratwurst
Food was terrific! Bratwurst and jaeger schnitzel best I've ever had.
Only negative was no air conditioning on a very hot summer evening.

A friend recommended the place to me a while ago and finally I had time to go last weekend and I just loved it! The owner has decorated the place with really cool art posters on the walls, which gives off a very artsy vibe! The staff was super attentive and gave us great recommendations as to what to order. The food was out very quick and the manager who was really sweet even came by our table to see if we were enjoying the food. We ordered the beet salad and chicken wings as an appetizer and jager schnitzel and vienna schnitzel as main courses and then had apricot dumplings for dessert, yummy! Will definitely go back to Blaue Gans!

Had not visited Blaue Gans since 2006; happy to report it has only gotten better in the interim! Absolutely everything is fantastic in all details -- from the pretzels to the vinaigrette to the delicate Spaetzle and the fine Steak Tartare. The wine list is exceptional as it emphasizes Austria's fruits of the vine (largely unsung in the USA), including some rarities. The beer list is un-fashionably short, and I like it that way because the options exemplify the Austro-German brewing tradition--best in the world. In recent years, there has been a rash of Austro-German restaurants in New York. I have visited most of them--some are great, some verge on disastrous; but BG offers the best value, without question. It is not to be missed.

Not your average fish dishes
Most eateries offer up salmon and a cheap white fish. Blaue Gans impressed with grouper and brook trout. Both were paired with peppy sauces and veggies. This is a creative kitchen that pleases the palate. Only downside of my lunchtime visit was the lack of air conditioning.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food very authentic. Wiener schnitzel excellent. Mussels were a little salty but sauce very good.

Great German-Austrian Fare
We wanted to experience a new German restaurant in the city and were greatly rewarded. Excellent food prepared with fresh ingredients, a fine selection of beer, and a friendly bartender who catered most kindly to us all added up to an enjoyable time.

The best of Austrian german cuisine
It's good to know that there is something different out there, sure French food is great so is American and Japanese. But when you are looking for something a little left of field this is the place to come to. The staff are friendly, the food is spot on and the ambience is perfect if you are looking for something fun and upbeat.

Great food, impressive menu
Great food, impressive menu selections ... delicious. We were not impressed the first couple of times we ate here, but that was a while ago. Something changed and now everything we ate was fabulous. The ham and liptauer cheese appetizer was wonderful -- great ham and probably the best liptauer cheese we've eaten. Portions are large. Lots on the menu we have yet to try, so we'll be back!

Best snitzel in the world outside of Vienna but that is where the Cheff is from!! Service and food were excellent we were constantly checked on for our needs , beer and wine lists exceptional.

Blaue Gans is one of our favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. This was the first time we tried their brunch/lunch. We've always gone there for dinner. Dinner is excellent and lunch was too! The service is always superb and friendly.

Four of us met up for lunch
Four of us met up for lunch and found the prix-fixe menu to be a great value. The food was fresh and delicious -- we had a variety of dishes and everything was flavorful. I would just not get the sirloin again -- the cut was grisly, and I think they should substitute another cut of beef -- but the potatoes and red cabbage that came with it were great. The desserts -- Sacher torte and apple strudel -- quickly disappeared.
Service was attentive and very helpful in describing the menu. We're all ready to go back!

Great restaurant, excellent food!
We thoroughly enjoyed eating at the Blaue Gans....the ambience is outstanding, the food delicious and the service very attentative and friendly. 100% recommendable

This is a neighborhood restaurant for us, we've been here often, and the food is consistently excellent. It can get noisy, if the big center table is full, but not insanely so. Last Sunday night it was very quiet, and we sat and talked for 4 hours. I often get the schnitzel, though I've had the goulash and other dishes too, and they are of a consistently high standard. And I strongly recommend the apple strudel, which is perfect!
Service can be spotty, but last night was very good. It's pricey but good quality and I never feel ripped off.

This is a great place for gourmet Austrian/German cuisine. The beer selection is good too.
