So much flavor packed into dishes!
There was so much flavor throughout every dish. The curries are a must try, the fish melted in my mouth, and everything tasted great. The dishes looked very simple, but each was a flavor explosion. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone that loves Vietnamese food.

Love, but too hot!
Doi Moi is an excellent addition to the 14th Street corridor. Love the atmosphere. Service was excellent and overall it was a great experience. The food is good, but too hot. The waitress told us it was hot, but one friend couldn't even eat it. The halibut and scallops were perfectly prepared and the other flavors were lovely (once you got past the heat) - makes me think that it just doesn't add anything to have it be so hot. At a minimum, it would be nice if you could order at various degrees of heat. The rice noodles with veggies was perfectly prepared and an absolute delight.
Will definitely go back.

Another Great Experience
Simply outstanding! Great ambiance, menu, execution and service.

We will be back!
Saw several items I wanted to order which means we will be back! Loved the service, our waitress new about everything on the menu and they have only been open for two weeks.
We would recommend the salads and curry dishes. The hanger steak starters were delish. The dipping sauces were sweet and spicy. Great flavor.
I did not like the shrimp starter and the glasses of wine were small for the price. Great selection on beers.
They had soft serve for dessert, yum. The bananas were quite good.

Restaurant is beautiful, great location, menu is fun, food is good, drink menu is nice. Above all, the service was extremely attentive. Water (tiny glasses) was refilled at every turn. After asking for a minute more to think about the menu, waiter returns as promised. Need a suggestion, he appears again. We were on the early side but they did not rush us out at the end when the place got crowded. I was impressed with the number of staff hovering about checking in on us. My only complaint is that there were so many of them, squeezed next to every table, which are not spaced widely apart, that if you're on the aisle, you could feel a bit hemmed in, with all the elbows reaching in and out.

We are very impressed with Doi Moi as a new restaurant on 14th street that actually makes a statement with its cuisine and its architecture. We tried the 'shark'beef, the whole fish, the halibut curry and several other small plates--all were very good except for the rather dry dumplings. This is an excellent restaurant--worth a journey to experience.

Interesting selection of food,
Interesting selection of food, well prepared. Service was good, although server was very busy. A bit noisy. Overall, very good.

Delicious and fun
My husband and I really enjoyed the whole dining experience at Doi Moi - from our seats at the kitchen bar, where we could watch the food being prepared calmly and competently, to the excellent guidance of the servers in navigating the menu. The food was delicious, with plenty of heat - which was nicely counterbalanced by the excellent salted key lime soda and gin cocktail. We look forward to coming back soon, preferably with a few more people, so that we can sample more of the menu.

Great Vietnamese in DC!
Great food. Flavorful veg options. Very good service.

Upscale, Innovative Asia
While Asian restaurants -- particularly Thai -- abound in the U Street area, the new Doi Moi offers different fare together with its inscrutable name. The dishes are Asian influenced, but not really Asian standards. Ingredients are combined differently, flavor combinations are often unexpected ones. Thanks to impeccable execution, the concept works, albeit at much higher price points than the neighborhood Thai joints. The food is well-seasoned, but not fiery; a "very hot" dish we shared was far less spicy than a dish I had down the street a few days earlier at a Thai restaurant not known for uncompromising seasoning. Staff is very adept at explaining the menu.

Noise level is too high. Your
Noise level is too high. Your rating system is deeply flawed here. Energetic is not the opposite of quiet. Loud is the opposite of quiet. Any 5 year old could tell you that.

Mouth on Fire!
The food was very spicy, but had a great deal of flavor so you forget that your mouth is on fire. We ordered a side of rice and a crisp white wine that really helped. Do yourself a favor and order the lemongrass chicken! Skip the desserts - they were a mess.

Another small plate gem
Each plate was flavored beautifully and delivered promptly. Our server had excellent recommendations. The cocktails were all very flavorful as well. Banana cake was a little underwhelming but perhaps only because the dinner had set the bar so very high.

Authentic Vietnamese & Thai dishes
If you dont like spicy food, dont come here. The Marinated Beef was awesome; perfect for kids. If you like spicy food, the Laab Ped is excellent. We thought the dumplings would be good as well, but they were kind of plain compared to the other starters.
For entrees, we got Chiang Mai Chicken & Noodle Curry and Blue Crab Noodles. The chicken curry was very good; it has been slowed cook such that pieces of chicken just fall off the bone. The noodles were ok. I would have preferred to have chicken served with vegetables in lieu of noodles. As for Blue Crab Noodles, the noodles were thicker rice noodles, which were better than noodle on the chicken curry.
There were a lot more dishes that I want try next time I come here.

Wow ! Different tastes, intense flavors. We loved it. The whole fried fish was awesome.
We can't wait to go back.

Best chicken noodle soup I've ever eaten!! Crab fried is delicious & skewered hangar steak melts in your mouth. Can't wait to go back.

Doi Moi was amazing. Unlike
Doi Moi was amazing. Unlike any other Thai restaurant where I have eaten, including two recently in York, England. Our most wonderful dish was a whole fish. The cashews were also super.

Worth a visit!
We had a great dinner. Really flavorful food. Lots of options. They were accommodating to a vegan guest as well. We headed downstairs to Two Birds & One Stone. Nice for an after dinner drink.

What is really cool is that
What is really cool is that the servers really know how to sell the menu. I have been there many times and really enjoy it.

I wasn't aware of all the hype of Doi Moi. Heard it was good so I went. And it was! Delicious food all around. I recommend the sablefish. I saw the whole crispy fish come out as I was leaving and was sad I hadn't tried it. I'll be going back for more. My partner who dined with me and has visited Vietnam thought the flavors were authentic. I think they do a great job of recreating Vietnamese flavors in a way that is easy to love while still pushing people's limits with spice and new ingredients.

food is very good. place is too noisy. server was annoying. did not know much, particularly about the wines, but kept telling us what she thought and what she likes. but she was not attentive to what we needed.

I choose Doi Moi for my aunts birthday dinner and I mentioned it to them and they did not even acknowledge it. It was also very cold in the resturant. Other than that the food was delicious and the drinks were very refreshing.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
Tried a half dozen of the small plates. The standout was the Lemongrass beef over vermicelli, whose noodles were tasty enough that my date tried to get a side order. The disappointment was the daikon (radish) cake, which was dull. We ended with a delicious banana cake and different brands of mead. We decided the Necromangocon mead was much tastier than the Blue Dog.
The restaurant was crowded by the time we left, so come early or risk having to wait.

fit the hype
Yes, it really was as good as the hype..... had a great meal and as one of us was a vegan, shared 3 vegan dishes that were just terrific. Got a bottle of wine and thought we would be bringing home most of it, but low and behold we drank the whole thing. Some kind of potatoe desert/ice cream for vegans for desert that was just fabulous. Truly wonderful meal

Excellent Concept-Outstanding Food
We have been to DoiMoi several times now. Everything is always a pleasure, especially the folks behind the bar, where we choose to eat. The menu, while excellent, needs to start developing some new offerings. We love DoiMoi.

Stylish Asian Small Plates
Doi Moi has a stylish room, stylish patrons, and stylish food. It tastes good too. The house specialty, an upright fried tilapia, looks most impressive on the plate and is flawlessly prepared, although not easy to eat. There was also impeccable frying in a salt and pepper squid dish which seemed far less peppery -- or fiery -- than it was during a prior visit. Crab fried rice was another successful, and adroitly seasoned, dish.
Our server and restaurant management deserve praise for gracefully handling an unfortunate situation. Apparently the restaurant's computer system vaporized our final order -- and several others -- as well. Our server kept up apprised about the delays and the restaurant reduced our bill without our asking.

Great Food.... and wonderful staff
Made reservation as it seems to be a hot spot these days for DC... reminded me of Beetlenut in San Francisco/Union St. in its heyday. Beetlenut was a PanAsian Fusion Tapas place... and Doi Moi is reminiscent of this place. I enjoyed dining at Beetlenut many many times in the '90s and I enjoyed Doi Moi for some of the same reasons too. Food was lovely... service was great... atmosphere was energetic.. a place I can see myself going to regularly.. even to just eat at the bar if crowded.

Americanized, but good
The Vietnamese food wasn't as authentic-tasting as I had hoped but it was still pretty tasty!

Excellent food. Spiciness
Excellent food. Spiciness intensifies flavor, rather than obscuring it. Dishes distinctive from each other. Presentation attractive. Atmosphere bright and enjoyable. Wait staff attentive and helpful. Price reasonable.

New, trendy, spicy!
I loved Doi Moi. I had been dying to go since it opened, and it didn't disappoint. The food was delicious, and the spice level lives up to its reputation, which was great. But there are options for those who don't like too much spice. One of the best things on the menu was actually the ginger-caramel swirl ice cream. You wouldn't necessarily think this, but it was amazing. We ordered two. The wait staff is also friendly and helpful. I would definitely go there again!

Great experience at Doi Moo
The food is deliciously authentic. The best Thsi in the DC area. Service was gracious and atmosphere was convivial. Well worth a visit .

On a snowy Sunday evening still a good number of diners. A pleasant relaxed atmosphere. We noticed the staff was very friendly and kind to all, including a young couple with a toddler. We do not enjoy hot (spicy) food, but were able to make choices with less heat. The sable fish with dill was excellent as was the lemon grass beef, both had a nice blending of flavors. The crab fried rice was a good comfort food.
