This one should break the cycle!
I work in the Jackson Square neighborhood where Roka Akor just opened. It is in the old Cypress Club location, where famously several restaurants with good pedigrees have spectacularly failed. It is rumored that the address is cursed. But I think Roka Akor could break the cycle. For one, even though the remodel is gorgeous (blonde wood and generous chairs with mango-colored leather upholstery; gorgeous pottery dinnerware; fabulous open kitchen), the food is the focus here, and it was a standout. No restaurant in SF can make it on decor or pedigree; it has to be about the food. For that reason, I think Roka Akor could actually break the cycle in its "cursed" location.

The Best Meal I've Had in SF
There are a lot of places in San Francisco where one can spend $200/pp, but this was the first time I left thinking "Worth EVERY penny, when can I come back?!" The quality of the ingredients, creativity, presentation, and precision of each and every dish helped to make this a meal I'll be waxing nostalgic about for ages.
For me, the warmer, more rustic vibe of Roka Akor makes the experience superior to even Alinea--and the flavors were more robust and authentic. To me, Roka Akor ranks up there with Cyrus or the Dining Room at the Ritz at their height; and Jose Andres' Minibar in Washington DC.
We had the "Decadent" menu at the robata grill, and were seated in front of Exec Chef Roman Petry. Overall, phenomenal.

Surprisingly complex menu,
Surprisingly complex menu, with sashimi/sushi classic at one pole and exquisite steak at the other, the food is the reason to frequent this upscale modernist decor experience. Roka Akor is not simply going out to dinner, it is fine dining, urbane and sophisticated, and as such a welcome addition to cool San Francisco and its best restaurants.

Roka Akor, San Francisco
This is a top-notch restaurant with excellent cuisine. We hosted a party of six for a business lunch and the restaurant was perfect for it. The food was wonderful, cooked to perfection and the courses came out perfectly paced. The noise level was more than acceptable to discuss business and a brief visit to the lounge downstairs topped off a perfect afternoon.

Outstanding restaurant with
Outstanding restaurant with sublime flavours, unusual combinations, definite urge to try everything on the menu, perhaps excluding sushi and rolls-hard to surprise San-Franciscan, but small plates-tataki-absolutely awesome , as lack cod or waguii beef, corn was super sweet and crunchi, rice with 4 kinds of mushrooms and truffles melting in your mouth, desserts- all very tempting and rightfully so!

Great Service along with Great food
Being a New Yorker I expect the best and have extreme high standards. From the minute we walked in the door we were treated with the utmost respect. The whole staff is extremely friendly and everyone always was making sure we were satisfied. Even the busboys would ask us of we were satisfied and wanted anything.
Now to the good part, the food! Every single dish we ordered was amazing. We were 4 people and we ordered alot of items to share. Every dish was a masterpiece. The table next to us had omakase which I was dying to do but my party wasn't Into it. I overheard them oohing and ahhing for 2 hrs too. I wish a place like this would open in ny!

Another fantastic meal
Roka never falls short of your expectations. As soon as you set foot in the restaurant all the way through a mind-blowing dessert, its a 5 star experience.
Something for everyone because I love my Japanese food where my husband is a full on carnivore.
If you haven't been here, you owe yourself this treat!

A Perfect Night
Steve, our waiter, took great care of us and I cannot say enough great things about the place. The tasting menu was sublime and worth every penny and the service was superior. I took my best friend for his birthday and we were not disappointed. I love letting the chef just take over and taking you on a culinary journey for the evening. Kiet the manager made sure we had everything we wanted and orchestrated a very enjoyable night for us. Go here now!
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
A good friend recommended the restaurant and I decided to check it out with my brother. We tried the decadent chef choice (it has a Japanese name but I can't remember how to spell it) and we were beyond satisfied. Every choice picked by the chef was perfect because it reflected the range of food the restaurant offered. We will definelty go back and this time bring the whole family.
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Unforgettable dining experience in city of fabulous restaurants. Enjoyed every morsel ordered. Filet mignon melts in your mouth. Sweet grilled corn a must order! Sushi fresh as could be; fish flown in from Japan & Hawaii four times weekly. Desserts on another planet. Is there anything this chef can't do? Service attentive, professional & California friendly. Cannot wait to go again!

Experience was awesome! Ordered
Experience was awesome! Ordered several dishes for a party of five. Each dish was beautifully plated, cooked to perfection and well seasoned and balanced. General manager stopped by a couple of times to ensure quality of service and food were satisfactory. Only con, portions were small for price. Regardless, I will return.

One of the best meals I have had in SF. The menu is innovative with many things to choose from. The service is professional and friendly. Try it!

great food. service is good
great food. service is good but can be absent minded and somewhat pretentious in a funny way. food was outstanding. Good cocktails in the bar but the bartenders move in slow motion.

Always an experience
This past Friday was an amazing treat with friends. We decided to share in a Decadent Omakase experience. After the parade of exquisite foods, we were all in agreement that the Decadent Omakase is the ultimate way to eat here. Not only were you eating the best of the best, it was such an array of meats, sushi, sashimi, seafood, desserts...oh my! Honestly, we couldn't believe they weren't charging more or coming out with smaller portions! The wine pairing was also stellar and took it to the next level. The service was flawless and it was such a treat to be near the Robata kitchen. I was ecstaticly glowing in my Omakase-coma well after the meal and have no doubt this is what I will be wanting for any occasion. Thank you Roka!
8/22/2013 5:00:00 PM
My fourth visit to Roka -- third Omakase Decadent version, and it remains simply outstanding, and matched by the high lkevel of service and knowledgeable staff. Can't wait to go back!

One of the best restaurants in town
ROKA AKOR opened recently and has immediately become my go-to-lunch spot for business meetings to impress visitors with SF's delicious food scene. The fish dishes are as fresh and tender as can be, the heirloom tomato salad melts on your tongue, the price for the business lunch menu more than fair for the quality you get ($24).
While I know it's very busy in evenings, it is still an undiscovered gem over lunch time and you will pretty much find a table any day without reservation. I highly recommend this place.
Bring a layer though - it's pretty chilly (and the slick and modern, japanese style minimalist ambiance doesn't make it feel any warmer).
8/26/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great new place
Went here with a friend from out of town. Food was yummy and nice ambiance. Our waitress was friendly and helpful.
8/28/2013 5:00:00 PM
The food was well presented. Beef tataki was delicious. Yellow tail was good. Appetizer
Portions were a bit too small for sharing. Good flavors. Service was a bit rushed and
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
The sashimi was good, but the presentation was way overdone. All the greenery (dead flowers, grasses, etc.) that accompanied a huge bowl of ice for ten pieces of sashimi was a bit over the top.
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Changes to an unasupicious spot
Roka is a very solid restaurant. Good food, beautiful presentation and great service. The atmosphere is more casual and friendly then it seems at first. The sake and wine list is amazing, so many goodies. I highly recommend coming for lunch and getting the $22.00 business lunch. It is more than enough to leave you full. The raw fish is good, but pricey for what you get. The cooked items and more tataki/crudo dishes are the real draw. The mix great presentation, cooking and flavors. I recommend giving it a shot!

Great omakase. Amazing food and for only been open for months on their game already! Stuffed and only did the $98 omakase. Love love love!!!!

What a treat. Some of the best, novel flavor combinations I've had in SF. I'd forgotten how good fish this fresh can taste. Great experience.

Pricey but worth a visit
I wanted to go to Roka Akor as I love their restaurant (Roka) on Charlotte Street in London. The restaurant is well set out and you have a lot of space which I like. I hate it when tables are tiny and on top of each other. The service was friendly and attentive, we were taking our time and ordering a few items at a time which I know can frustrate servers sometimes but we were never rushed at all. The wine list is very good, you can spend a lot if you wish but there are also some great options for a more modest budget. It definitely is not a cheap eat but it is well worth it, the quality is amazing. We had a number of dishes, crispy squid, wagyu potstickers, sashimi, tiger prawns - all were very good. I will definitely be back.

Not only great food, but NICE staff
I already contributed one review after being very favorably impressed by my first meal at Roka Akor, but this time, I want to say something about their niceness factor. I've been to Roka Akor an embarrassing number of times (five!) in the last couple of months since they opened, and every time, the whole staff has been wonderful. The restaurant itself is very sleek and posh, almost so you are braced for a chilly or snooty attitude from the host and waitstaff, as can too often happen when a restaurant wants to project a certain attitude. But the host and waitstaff at Roka Akor are unfailingly nice, warm, welcoming, and extraordinarily accommodating. Kudos to them and the management that fosters that!

Amazing creativity and presentation and all delicious. Highly recommend it. The bar down below is fun for a group or romantic too. Server was friendly, knowledgable and accomodating.

Excellent Japanese restaurant
We loved everything about this restaurant!
We tried the Hamachi maki roll was extraordinary and the Teriyaki sweet potato was really good but the corn tempura was the best! We even ordered another one!
We would easily come back next time we are in San Francisco.
Thank you for a lovely dinner!

Expensive (And Worth It)
Two of us dined on the Deluxe Omakase. Each dish was new to us and exquisite. Mostly protein, no carb filler. Excellent sake ($84 for the bottle) that complemented and stood up to every dish. $500 for 2, including a generous tip. We've spent that much elsewhere and left with the impression that we needn't come back. But not at Roka Akor - this was truly unique and memorable!
9/27/2013 5:00:00 PM
4 of us had a most delightful evening! We partook in their "Decadent Omakase" menu that consisted of 18 courses for $128 ( a deal!). All were good, some excellent. By the time we got to the dessert, we all thought we would die from so much food but then a magical thing happened. A huge and incredible dessert platter was set before us and suddenly we could eat much more.
Unlike a tasting menu at a restaurant like Coi or Commis, the dishes were not complex in flavor combinations or a unique concept of the chef's. But all were well done and totally enjoyable. Also the servings were not tiny tastes as a lot of tasting menus offer but huge servings, family style. The presentations were meant to thrill, and they did! So much fun!
9/29/2013 5:00:00 PM
Delicious food that was well prepared. If getting the decadent omakase make sure you leave room for the enormous dessert at the end! Food was delicious with all courses:
1. Uni and chicharrones
2. Beef carpaccio
3. Sushi platter with toro
4. Lobster tempura
5. Abalone soup
6. Australian wagyu steak
7. Chocolate cake and panama cotta dessert.

Hand down one of the best Omakase
My girlfriend and I order the Omakase Decadent since we didn't know what to order so we ask them to surprise us. I'm not sure how many plates I received but I'm sure it was over 14 courses. Each plate was unique and astounding which WOW my girlfriend. Their seafood is as fresh as it can get, where you can see the natural shine of their fish. Vegetables were fresh and delicious and their Waygu beef was to die for. Best part was their dessert which comes with many different varieties of sorbets and other goodies. Anyways bottom line is that if you want a nice romantic date, and want to surprise your love one, U would really recommend trying this place once.

One of the best meals ever...
One of the best meals I have ever had. I have been to many highly rated restaurants in the city/ bay area (Gary Danko's, La Folie, Morimoto's) and this one might just top them all. Had the decadent omakase, along with some beers and sake. I had a lovely 3rd anniersary dinner. All the servers were very attentive and detailed oriented. They explained the menu very well. Our server Vunce was amazing and made great recommendations. Only criticism was we were slowly seated with reservations on a Wednesday night , and I think a couple that arrived after us was given their seats before ours.
But aside from that issue, I would highly recommend.
10/8/2013 5:00:00 PM
Still new but a winner
The restaurant was about 3/4 full at peak lunch hour, and it took the maitre d' awhile to greet and find us a table, so I think this relatively new restaurant is still working out the kinks. The location and signage for the entrance was confusing, and the acoustics are challenging--hard to hear the wait staff when they're explaining the menu to your companions across the table. However, the walls of glass are visually beautiful and meditative in feel as is the warm natural wood with air plants on the walls. The food was fabulous and the lunch specials were a good deal for the high quality of the food and service.

Wonderfully thoughtful dishes which were superb in quality. Fantastic job in creating a environment that brings joy to all the senses.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Whenever a place opens in a location that has been a restaurant graveyard, one feels a certain trepidation...I hope these guys succeed. I have only been there one, for lunch, but although it is a little spendy, Roka is very nice. There are a lot of hard surfaces so I fear it will be noisy when full. Also, the tables are about 4 inches too wide, so one has to raise one's voice a little to speak across the table, which no doubt adds to the problem.
Anyway, well worth a visit for well above-average Japanese food.

Wonderful food and service ! What a fun dinner and just fun place to be.
A must have is the Butterfish Tataki with white asparagus !

Will never forget this meal
I had a wonderful experience here at Roka Akor. The food was superb, top-notch quality. This was definitely a meal I will never forget. It was a little loud, I'm not too sure why, it wasn't even that crowded when me and my date first got there but we're use to loud places so it didn't really take away from our meal and experience. The fish was extremely fresh and some of the best sashimi i've ever had. The Wagyu beef was probably the best piece of red meat I have ever eaten in my life. Had no issues with the service, our waitress was kind and friendly and informed us with great details about the menu and what they serve. It was also nice that they explained in detail each dish that was served to us.

Great food but service was lame
My husband and I were referred to this restaurant through a colleague. We sat upstairs but also decided to check out the downstairs loung area. I found us the perfect table in lounge area and the waitress said she would hold the table for us but failed to do so. We asked the waitress upstairs for a sake recommendation and she pointed to a $55 bottle of sake. But to our surprise when we received our bill the bottle was a $130 bottle of sake. Wow! Just think that she could have double checked that we indeed wanted a $130 bottle of sake. But no... Didn't bat an eye. Okey doke! Interesting! Besides the shotty service the food was delectable!

Fidi hot lunch spot
Shhhh... can you keep a secret? This is a great Fidi weekday lunch spot especially for those 'power lunch' crowds. Excellent food at reasonable prices especially when you dine on their business lunch special.
Service is well above average and the ambiance is great since it's brand new!
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
A client suggested this place. The ambience seemed a bit sterile when I first arrived, but the experience made up for it. They have a wide range of food from sushi to pork belly. All of it was presented beautifully and was tasty! The staff was super helpful in making suggestions and right on!
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
dinner menus were over prized; otherwise it would be a nice option.
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
I have now been to Roka 3 times in the last 2 months and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who will listen. The first time I came to Roka, I did the Roka tasting (baseline) which was a great way to see a broad range of offerings on the menu. It was really delicious - standouts were the steak, mushroom rice, butter / soy glazed grilled corn, and the sushi is unbelievably fresh. I didn't love the prawn dish.
This is a great location for a nicer night out as well as business lunches. The decor is clean and stunning, i particularly love the open kitchen. Currently, there is always prime time availability so Roka has become a go-to for me. I highly recommend this place!

Amazing new take on Japanese
Though the sashimi and sushi rolls are worth the trip, the hot dishes are even more special. We particularly enjoyed the huge (lobster sized) Madagascar prawn and the Brussel sprouts.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
A consistently fantastic treat
Roka has something for everyone-sushi lover or not. The presentation of the food was like a show and each bite a reward. It is the perfect place to take someone, or multiple someones, and "WOW" them. Its also a perfect lunch spot where you can have a mid day meet up with friends or a uber-nice business lunch. Thanks for making my city go-to spot!

I will be back!
Went for a business lunch. The food was delicious, our server helped with some amazing selections, and I love the decor. I am bringing my husband here for sure!
