Fresh and Deliciously Prepared Food
The food was really exceptional! Everything tasted so fresh and handmade. It felt like a lot of love and attention to detail was put into the food. The service was just good, not amazing. The attention to detail that was conveyed in the preparation of the food, was lacking in the service. We sat with empty water glasses for quite a while during the meal - when we were eating - not when we were done. We had to pour our own wine, which you would not expect for that to be the case for this caliber of a restaurant. I think perhaps we just got the wrong server and so the service experience definitely would not deter me from going back. Overall it was very enjoyable.

We had a really nice meal
We had a really nice meal at Le Virtu. We were seated promptly and the waitress was very helpful with wine suggestions from their very interesting and extensive list of Italian wines. We were told about the specials long after we'd had our menus, so it ended up changing our order quite a bit. Everything was either very good or outstanding. The appeitzers were excellent (egg and cheese croquettes were amazing as was the octopus salad). The pasta courses tasted great but the pasta stuck together quite a bit. The entrees were all very good though a little fatty (including the porchetta and the rabbit). Overall, this was a clearly above average meal - though not quite outstanding.

Friendly an informative severs, but very slow food service. Corkage fee of $10 per bottle of wine was upsetting. Almost $300 was spent on a dinner for four people. They could have waived the fee. Its about common sense business ethics - not a money issue.
Reconsider your corkage fees, particularly when the tabs are hundreds of dollars. While it is understandable restaurants make huge profits on wine and corkage fees, a small perk to patrons with large tabs will likely bring them back for a return visit. That is the goal! I am returning to the same ares next week, but another restaurant.

Great Chef Doing Wonderful Things
Enjoyed a fabulous dinner, seated in the garden on a beautiful evening! Every dish we had was unique and exciting, was expertly prepared, and the presentation was marvelous. Couldn't ask for a better showcase of the Philadelphia dining scene for my out-of-town visitors!

Had a wonderful time, fabulous
Had a wonderful time, fabulous food, great service. Will definitely go back again!! It was a great place to celebrate my birthday!

Not your red-gravy cuisine
Restaurant does excellent Abruzzese dishes. Don;t come expecting "American" Italian. Everything we've had here is excellent, from the Antipasti of charcuterie and cheeses (try the burrata this time!) to the excellent desserts, we've never been disappointed.

Top Italian resto in South Philly
Service is great. Recommend any pasta dish. The pork shoulder is tops. Wine list is thorough and not overpriced. Terrace is lovely in nice weather. Very European.

A trip to Italy
Almost every time we dine at Le Virtu we try some new dish that we've never had or sometimes even heard of before, which is one of our favorite parts about traveling. This visit was particularly rewarding, like a trip to Italy without the airfare!
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first time at
This was our first time at Le Virtu and it was a good experience. The octopus salad was especially good. We had the faro risotto and the seafood brodetto. Both of these were very good. The menu had many dishes that we would like to try on future visits to this restaurant. Their are several good restaurants on this part of Passyunk, and Le Virtu more than holds its own among them.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
top notch italian dining
This was our third visit to Le Virtu--one of the hotter Italian restaurants in Philly--part of that restaurant row in Passyunk. We always find the dishes (especially the pastas) excellent. One of the things that stands out here is the professionalism and attentiveness from the owners, hosts and wait staff. For some reason, a lot of places can't seem to deliver both the food and the experience. Le Virtu does both. And if the weather is nice, the outdoor dining option is beautiful. With the mural behind us, you almost felt like you were in Italy. If you want to dine outside, request it in advance. On a nice night, they fill up fast.

As good as Tuscany
Our dinner from appetizers to desserts was superb. After spending the month of June in Italy we were delighted to find comparable dishes at Le Virtu. My taglietelle with wild boar was excellent as were the other pasta dishes my party devoured. The porchetta was the best I have eaten and the orato was perfectly prepared. One dessert of grilled peach polenta cake was outstanding.
The noise level, however was terrible.

Best Italian in Philly
I have been to LeVirtu many times since it opened. It continues to get better. The owner Kathy greets you as if you are family. Chef Joe is the secret to the success of this place. I took five friends from out of town this time. They all raved about it and are all coming back. The salad was as fresh as can be, the macoroni with lamb was unreal. The folks who had the pasta with rabbit loved it, as did the person with the Orata and the gnocchi. The problem is too many great choices. Anyhow, on a nice evening, you have to eat outside. Nothing like it anywhere. Otherwise, inside is fine. I'd prefer a round table for six, but that's really nit picking. This place deserves the favorable reviews it gets from everyone.

Post Italy trip dinner
We selected the place since it had outdoor dining and it was a beautiful night. We found out that we had to request outside at the time of the reservation. Very disappointing, Thought of going elsewhere but decided to stay. We were seated next to the kitchen so it was a little louder but not unreasonable. We were greeted promptly. The food was very different so I would not go here if you are a fussy eater. We mostly ordered the specials of the evening and we were not disappointed. The fresh pasta portion was not large, but it was wonderful in taste and perfect for me. The duck was done perfectly. The salad of tomato, onion and cheese was top notch. Bread for the meal was better than average but nothing to get excited over.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
we ate outside and the food was excellent, service on point, and even the manager came over to check on us after we ordered the head cheese. everything was superb. we will recommend and return.

The best restaurant in Philly
I recommend this restaurant for all those who want to taste the authentic Italian cuisine. Maccheroni, gnocchi and taccozzelle were superb. Everything we ate was top quality. I need to return there very soon to try other special dishes.

First time at this restaurant
First time at this restaurant and loved it! We split a pasta course of torteloni stuffed with squab in a fabulous butter sauce, topped with fresh peaches. We both had the fish special which was a black bass served over a fresh green beans and fingerling potatoes. Wonderful dessert of blueberry crostata. Loved the atmosphere, service excellent.

Third Time is a Charm!!
This was our third visit!. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather with our wonderful dinner. The waitstaff is so friendly and a joy to deal with. The tripe keeps me coming back!. The first time I had it, I wanted to cry because it tasted just like my Mom used to make on Saturday afternoons. Please never take it off the menu! I had the fish special. It was cooked to perfection. Crispy skin and light and flaky. My son had the farro seafood risotto. He loved it. And my husband loved the homemade gnocchi. Always a favorite for him. We love LeVirtu and hope to go back in the very near future.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very good Northern Italian cuisine
Great food with rather poor service. We ordered the most expensive appetizer, before our entree and just after our drinks came to the table, our main course was also coming. We were a bit disappointed not to taste the cheeses and salumi which they are known for throughlout the city.
8/24/2013 5:00:00 PM
Everything at Le Virtu was exceptional. From the owners, to the food, to the service ... a special night!
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Going to Le Virtu is always a fine-dining experience. Service is wonderful, but what adds to the meal, in my opinion, is that everyone, from the front-of-the-house, to the bartender and wait staff, work with relaxed professionalism, instead of stiff formality. The food is truly remarkable. This visit I had chitarri with lamb ragu (to die for) and porchetta, which was served atop cannellini beans and broccoli rabe. The wine list is excellent -- good choices at varied price points and the staff will help you pick something to complement the meal. Excellent!
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
What a great find!
Friends have raved about this restaurant for quite awhile but this was the first time we have gone and we can't wait to go back. We shared a wonderful handmade pasta with black truffle, then my husband had a great rabbit dish while I had a very fresh Dorado filleted at the table. Everything was first rate. The cocktails were very well prepared, the wine list excellent and the after dinner liqueurs were terrific. The staff and owner were all extremely friendly and welcoming. A great find.

a neighborhood gem!

Wonderful "non-gravy" Italian
Wonderful "non-gravy" Italian restaurant with a clear focus on Abruzzo. We started with rice balls, sheep's milk cheese (percorino del parco) with house cured salume, pasta with rabbit ragu and spicy, spreadable Calabrese salame. The rice balls were moist and tasty, the cheese and salume were complementary and the rabbit rag and spreadable salame were other wordly. Main courses included a spicy single-strand pasta with hot pepper an pecorino, rabbit porchetta style and a special pork ragu. Each one was better than the other. They have a wonderful wine menu that focuses also on Abruzzo. Service was excellent. This is another gem along the Passyunk Avenue corridor.
9/20/2013 5:00:00 PM
Abruzzo oriented Italian
The Abruzzo is a wonderful province just east of Rome with mountain and pastoral scenery, good food traditions and never many tourists. A part of Italy you can really enjoy! Le Virtu features Abruzzo specialties, such as boar salami, in a rustic and very welcoming restaurant. Good food, attentive service, good wine list.

Delicious, Fun, Vibrant
Delicious, interesting preparation. Lamb sausage for an appetizer that was scrumptious. Fresh pasta. Beautiful whole fish. Perfect county chicken with potatoes and vegetables.Friendly, helpful service. Looking forward to a return trip to this great find.

Run, don't walk
Easily one of my top restaurant choices in Philly. A delightful menu, expertly prepared and presented. Simply wonderful food. Delicious. I enjoyed every morsel of our food.
The service was impeccable in every possible way. The servers were attentive, knowledgeable and keen to assist in making the evening fluid and perfect. I adore everything about this restaurant and look forward to my next visit.
I hope to get another great meal in before outdoor seating is not an option any longer!
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
How many ways can you say EXCELLENT? This place is so good, you almost don't want to tell others about it for fear of never getting another booking! It is difficult to adequately explain the uniqueness of the the food and the superior service. Honestly, I think it is the best restaurant in Philadelphia!
10/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
We decided on Le Virtu because of the homemade salumi and the Slow Food seal of approval. The service was excellent - great advice on the food and impressive help with the wine list. The wine list wasn't overly huge and complex - it was focused on Abruzzo and surrounding areas of Italy - so we needed some guidance - the wine suggestion was spot on - and the wine pricing was reasonable. The three of us enjoyed the salami sampler appetizer and then enjoyed different pasta dishes - each of us loved the dish we ordered. We shared a dessert, which was excellent flavor, presentation, etc. Of course the person who "only wanted a bite" ended up having almost half. The entire experience was excellent.
10/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, wine, service
This was our first visit. We enjoyed the entire experience. The Braised egg and cheese croquettes in tomato sauce and Hand-pulled, single-strand pasta were standouts. The wine list is well thought out and reasonably priced. The atmosphere inside is reminiscent of Abruzzo. There is a lot of restaurant competition in Philly, and on this block in particular. Le Virtu brings an A-game.
10/11/2013 5:00:00 PM
We sat at table 12 which is in the bar area.It is not a great table. The outside dinning is wonderful, but there are not a lot of two tables. Whatever you order at this restaurant is a treat. Salads and the handmade pasta served with red hot hot peppers in a basket with a scissors was delicious.. Be forwarned , skip the peppers even if you love hot, it's too hot. Then we had the rabbit served porchetta style which was delicious, perhaps a bit too much rosemary. Finished up with a caramel white chocolate semi-fredo and some lovely perfect not too sweet Lemoncello. Everything would have been perfect but for a very loud group of 8 that ordered very little foo and an abundance of drink, Deafening!!!!! Couldn't wait to get the heck out of there.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
your restaurant had excellent ambience, food, and wine
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Homemade pasta was excellent. Good place if you are in the neighborhood.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
excellent except dessert was sparce
My husband and I loved your food and will be back. However, we ordered the wrong dessert. The half a small pear in parchment was delicious, but extremely small in size, and it was the most expensive at $14. That was the only disappointment.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is definitely one of
This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia. Everything we had was excellent; the pastas were superb.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
every dish had a twist
my first time to Le Virtu...I am 65 and had three things I've never had before, spreadable salami, pheasant (stuff in raviolis) and gooseberry (tart)...every dish had a twist...the chestnut soup was to die for...
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
Consistently the best in Philadelphia. We went with real foodies from New York and Boston, and they loved it..
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Better every time
My husband and I keep loving this place
Everything is grat
The only thing that would improve things would be an asking from the owner of how things are
And not I asking us to wait at bar when there s no room

Best Pasta in Philly
With respect to all of Vetri's places, and the many other excellent pasta dishes in South Philadelphia, there is nothing that compares to the pasta at Le Virtu. Each variety is handmade and tastes it, perfectly balancing between good body and lightness, rich but not overpowering, substance twinned with delicacy.
I do not get to come here too often, which is a good thing, because my absence allows me to be stunned anew every time I come.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
We enjoyed the food very much.
We enjoyed the food very much. It was high quality with large portions. The regional Abruzzi cuisine distinguished itself from other so called southern or northen Italian cuisine in that it seemed more rustic or what I would imagine to be authentic.
We were not rushed. It was nice to see the head man serving some of the plates personally as well as engaging with the customers.

Interesting food, so-so service
First, the kitchen was "on" . My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal from the antipasti though the gnocchi al pastore and pollo alla casalingua to the apple and pear crostata.
Service was "off". We were seated on the "flyway" between the entrance and the bar. I asked to be moved to the next open table and was told "that's a three top." Not five minutes later, two people were seated at the "three top". My tall husband spent out dinner ducking trays/plates/waiting guests.
Also, our waiter was frequently MIA.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very Good !
We had a very good meal here. I would definitely return!

Best Italian in Philly
Fourth time at Le Virtu. Always an outstanding dining experience. Had an excellent Italian red. Went with one of the pasta specials and the octopus appetizer. Never had anything on the menu that I didn't enjoy. Everything is from the Abruzzo region. You don't come here for spaghetti and chicken parm. You come for a very authentic Italian regional dining experience. The staff is always friendly. Breads on the table are superb. I've sent people here looking for a high end restaurant in town that is not the typical same-old or another steakhouse. Nobody has ever had less than great things to say about their meal. Great choice for out of town guests looking for something special in South Philly.
