My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Salt Exchange. Food is fresh tasting and simply prepared. Portion sizes are manageable and pricing is reasonable. Our only disappointment was they were out of 2 fish appetizers, both the mussels and oysters. The waiter said they had a busy lunch service. We live in Maine and I found this difficult to digest. Right across the street are several fish companies. Whoever does the ordering, in my opinion, if you run out of something at lunch on a Friday, do your best to purchase more by dinner service. Also our waiter, who seemed new, forgot to offer bread or serve with our meal. I had to grab a piece from my husbands appetizer.
Other than that, Still MY FAVORITE LOCAL dinner restaurant!

Upscale but informal fine dining
Finally, a restaruant that understands appropriate portion size! We shared a cheese plate appetizer, each had a main course (well presented, not too large, very tasty) and separate desserts (small but tasty). Pleasant ambiance -- wood and old brick, lots of art on the walls. Highly recommend for an upper end experience in Portland.

Arrived Monday night of Memorial Day weekend and found the place nearly empty. A real shame, since the food was impeccable. A real alternative to better known Fore Street and Grace. Wine list is limited but imaginative. Waiter was attentive, professional, and fun. Taste and presentation are the things to savor. Hope it's busier on normal nights, since Salt Exchange deserves a life.

It was not my first choice
It was not my first choice but it proved to be an outstanding place. Not many people there, had great seats, service was excellent and the food well prepared and reasonable portions. I will be back.

did 95 settings on a saturday night
....on only 26 reservations; a testament to the local, walkin popularity popularity despite the sophistcated atmosphere anchored by tecnically competent local painting hanging, live jazz. Its very unusual to find a place where a third of the clientele walked in from nearby neighborhoods with their toddlers, a third could actually buy the art , and there remainder are their for what can be the best food in the city any given night. This particular night the kitchen ran out of dish after dish and owner just gave up trying to fill orders from the menu and just gave away the remaining entree's, lobster rissoto and all.

Very sophisticated kitchen with knowledgeable staff.

Good food, bad value
Food was terrific but costly and in small portions. The entrees were portioned as an an appetizer. Otherwise, creative, tasty, and well presented.

I was looking forward to a nice meal out with my son. The side of Chips was very nice, as were the salads we enjoyed. I ordered the ribeye med rare. I got a sirloin that was med-well. Very disappointing. My son's cod (the special) was perfectly prepared and most enjoyable. However, we probably won't go back.

Great Old Port dining experience
Down at the far end of Commercial Street, The Salt Lick is just enough off the beaten path to be non-frantic but accessible. Our reservation had to be changed because our plane got in late, but they were most accommodating. The lovely reclaimed warehouse has striking paintings and photographs everywhere, a treat in itself. The food was excellent: pear salad, Damariscotta oysters, marinated grilled Gulf of Maine dogfish (a small shark, sustainably fished), and the most lobster-intense lobster risotto I have encountered (and I have encountered quite a few). Service was amiable and well-paced. All in all, a very positive experience!

I know....the Mac and cheese is amazing. Tuna special with a guacamole purée was wonderful.

Great Lunch find!!
This was a terrific lunch find for us as a break from our Newport Rhode Island to Rockland Maine drive. It is a perfect place to relax and the food was great. We are fish-only diners and this place is a find. We had calamari as we have never had before and blackened fish tacos which I would have once or twice a week if we lived nearby. Everything was excellent, the waitstaff were friendly and the view was mesmerizing. It is a six to ten minute drive from I-95 so stop in and relax. You just might see us there!

Discovered a New (to us) Restaurant
We had some business in town, down on the waterfront, and The Salt Exchange was recommended to us. Arrived around 1:00pm--after the lunch-hour rush--and enjoyed a wonderful mushroom and fennel pureed soup, along with a piece of pan-roasted cod over a vegetable risotto. It was excellent. In fact, since we're in Portland reasonably frequently we're going to try this for dinner, as well. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Bourbon sampler and appetizer
We stopped in before dinner for bourbon and an appetizer. Both were awesome! The service was excellent and the atmosphere was very comfortable. Great place!

One of my favorite restaurants
One of my favorite restaurants in Portland. Small-ish portions mean you can actually have room for dessert. Friendly and helpful staff every time I've dined there. Great selection of bourbon and rye, and the cherry bar is beautiful. The complementary parking right nearby is a big plus.

Great service, great food
We had a wonderful meal at Salt Exchange. First time for us and our friends, and we will be back again. Nice atmosphere, attentive service, everyone enjoyed the food. Terrific location.

Enjoyable Saturday Evening
Pleasant early dining on a Saturday evening while on a visit to Portland. Food was all it said it would be, excellent fish as you would expect in a city by the sea.
Food, Atmosphere and people made for an enjoyable special occasion.

We loved this restaurant that we found through the open table app. We'd had swordfish 4 times in the last week in 3 different states from some of the best chefs and The Salt Exchange was by far the best. You'll have to go and ask the chef for the secret because I'm not telling. I must say, it completely surprised me and gave me a new way to make swordfish. Everything was exquisite down to the freshly baked sourdough bread.

Awesome food and atmosphere. Having Jazz Alchemy play was a bonus for our birthday dinner! This was a great find for us!

Salt exchange was definitely good food. On the pricey soda, but we were passed with the overall cost. Chips and sauce = amazing! Gotta try!

perhaps the best meal I've had
in Portland, and I've had a ton of great meals in Portland. braised pork shank was like touching the face of buddha - my companions had similar evaluations of their dishes (cod, duck and lobster risotto).

The Sat Exchanges Delivers
The Salt Exchange has one of the best chefs in Portland, Chef Adam White, at its helm, making it one of the best restaurants in town. He makes the ordinary extraordinary. Give him a piece of cod or swordfish, and what comes back is a medley of tastes and aromas that are truly creative. This is my go to restaurant. I love it.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was my second time at Salt Exchange, but was my first dinner and it did not disappoint. The pork was great and my friend enjoyed his swordfish. The menu is limited to a handful of entrée options and most of the apps were seafood. The cesar salad was good but over priced.
We'd go back to Salt Exchange and recommend you give it a try

Very comfortable atmosphere
Very comfortable atmosphere warmed with artwork by local artists and the character of its waterfront architecture. Food was carefully prepared, beautifully presented and held surprise after surprise of delicate flavors. Service was friendly, professional and well-timed. We would recommend The Salt Exchange for a special or everyday dining experience.

Excellent food, excellent
Excellent food, excellent atmosphere. Owner was walking around greeting everyone and making everyone feel like a valued customer. Will definitely go back.

My son and I loved the Risotto, but my wife went out on a limb and tried the quail and did not enjoy it. My daughter is a little picky and the burger wasn't what she was used to, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't good.

There were 7 in our party. We could carry on a conversation easily. The food was excellent. On a par with the several top restaurants in Portland.

The Salt Exchange
7:30 reservation on a Saturday night of a three day weekend. Got a call from the restaurant at 7 to confirm. Greeting seating and waiter were all professional Drink menu was inventive. The menu, while not extensive, had good range in terms of product and preparation, except our waiter reappeared to say that two appetizers and two main courses were unavailable. As we were ordering another entree became sold out, forcing some reconsideration. Desserts were clever and good. On balance the experience was very good. The food ranged from good to very good, although the early sell outs were a disappointing puzzle. Would return and recommend although an earlier seating might be considered if the supply is not the exception rather than the rule.

Go for it!
The Salt Exchange is lovely and low key, with a fantastic food presentation. I had the butternut squash/turnip/apple soup- perfect thickness, well seasoned, and totally comforting on a cold fall evening! Goat cheese salad was well dressed, allowing the flavors of the pear/cheese/nuts to come through-- greens were crisp and tasty. Mac and Cheese is heavenly-- gouda with bacon and just a hint of jalepeno-- you will love it! Pork chop was good, but had to be sent back because it truly was not cooked sufficiently -- staff was amiable about correcting it. Nice drink lists, and love the way the bread and butter are served with different salts to try-- interesting touch!

We love this restaurant! The food is wonderful - I had the lobster risotto and it was great. We tried a few different appetizers and enjoyed all of them. The wine selection was really good, too. Great place for a celebration or an intimate dinner.

Nice evening in Porland
My wife and I enjoyed our dinner at The Salt Exchange. Plenty of tables available when making the reservations that morning. We booked 7PM. By about 8, the place was pretty full.
Relatively small menu, but food is prepared and presented well. Portions not very large, but with an appetizer and dessert, you leave satisfied. I recommend the W.L. Weller Whiskey!

We loved the restaurant and our food and wine. Unfortunately for them, we were the only party in their dining room on the Monday before Thanksgiving. They were a little embarrassed and understandably would rather have been able to close, and we felt sorry for them. Otherwise a very wonderful and memorable birthday dinner for me. The noise level couldn't have been any better for us - we are in our 60's and don't hear as well as we used to.

Gourmet Food at Reasonable Prices
From the lobster quesadilla appetizer, though the monkfish and angus burgers, the chopped/sauteed brussel sprouts and the exquisite truffle oil and sea salt chips, the food was excellent. Great drinks too! Casual, arty atmosphere. An appetizer, three entrees, two sides, four drinks, two coffees and a dessert was less than $120. Great value!
