Unique Restaurant in Montclair
This restaurant stands out from the other places in Montclair in that it has a real vegetarian menu (that's not just pasta and salads) along with top notch steaks. The food is locally sourced and you can tell from the way the food tastes. We will be back!

A new kid on the crowded block
A new kid on the crowded block in Montclair. Worth a try. Very innovative flavor combinations. Far better than most in Montclair.
I wish them the best.

Food and service were both great. The separate and robust vegetarian menu was appreciated by my vegan wife, and I enjoyed the non-vegetarian menu. I understand that this restaurant is fairly new, but you couldn't tell. They really have their act together.

New & Phenomenal Food
Southern style cooking, elevated to a finer dining experience in a casual dining setting. Service was impeccable, if stretched a bit thin at lunch time. This new restaurant's menu prices will be going up soon!

The quality and freshness
The quality and freshness of the food were superb and preparation unique. The staff were very friendly and willing tp please.

Worthy addition to Montclair scene
A delicious salmon Amuse Bouche transitioned to inventive bread service, (we had biscuits with honey butter). Appetizers were crispy sweetbreads for me, and a nicely balanced green salad with shredded apples and pepato cheese for my wife. For entrees we were both gleeful; my wife with sea scallops garnished with an array of pickled beets, and myself with a gooey shortrib on a bed of corn grits. Desert was a chocolate ganache so ridiculously dense and rich I had wondered if they referred to the periodic table of elements while creating it. I still regret not having room to sample the local artisan cheeses they had on the chalkboard. Staff was knowledgeable and friendly and words like "Thalmus" were bandied about.

Great Find in Montclair
I stumbled upon Escape in searching Open Table for a place in Montclair. The reviews were excellent and the menu intriguing and relatively reasonable. What a find! It's a farm-to-table concept --much like A Toute Heure in Cranford but the prices were much more reasonable. The restaurant was lovely--tables weren't too close together. There were 4 of us in our party and everyone enjoyed their meals. My husband and I had just returned from Charleston, SC and were wondering if the grits here would compare--they did!! My husband's salmon dish was outstanding as well. Portions were a good size. The service was attentive and informative. We will definitely be back!

Wonderful Omikase Dinner
I've been to Escape several times and have always had the very best meals. On this visit, Chef Bryan Gregg prepared a 7-course Omikase dinner for my wine group (8 people). What a treat paired with the wines we brought (restaurant is BYO).
From clean and fresh uni with cucumber "soup" to the decadent crispy bone marrow and foie gras to chesses, our dinner was sublime.
A MUST visit if in the tri-state area.

Fabulous Farm to table!
We dined with friends and we were unanimous in our love for Escape and would go back in a heart beat.

Escape to Escape
Small space which could use some better decor, but food was excellent. If they found a new maitre d, this new restaurant could be a winner. Do not go to Escape with a "hungry man " appetite. Portions are not huge. Very tasty though made with all local fresh ingredients.

The food was delicious but
The food was delicious but the main course portions were a bit small. On the other hand, they brought out an amuse bouche and the breads were delicious. The restaurant is not fancy and most tables have a view into the kitchen at times which is not intentional. The service is friendly and attentive and they are clearly proud of the restaurant. We'll eat there again!

First rate professional service.
First rate professional service. Well chosen menu expertly executed. It is obvious how much care and attention goes into ensuring that you have a wonderful time. Nice wine glasses too for the BYOB.

The freshest ingrediants in Montcla
Escape could be the best restaurant in Montclair. Not easy since there are so many great places to eat in that town. They have created something quite unique, using the freshest local ingrediants to provide truly memorable meals. We've been to Escape a couple of times, and we will definitely be back. The food is outstanding.

Had a wonderful dinner at Escape in Montclair. Salad was very fresh and had wonderful texture with finely sliced fennel. It was light and refreshing. My pork medallions with potatoes and kale was delicious. My husbands chicken with collared greens and cheese grits was creamy with out being heavy. Portions were just enough food without beibg skimpy. I loved having vegetables
included, when so many restaurants have dropped them from entrees.

Servers too frenetic
The food was great and the restaurant had a nice feel to it but the servers were all running around like crazy in a relatively small space which coupled with the noise level did not make for a relaxing dining experience. We also felt ignored by our waiter who brought desert menus but neglected to return to take our order so we just asked for the check and left.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've eaten in all restaurants in Montclair. The food at escape is unique and out of this world delicious. Smaller , yet perfect portions. Veggies kale grits fish cheeses. The kitchen has serious talent. I would eat here once a week if I could afford it! A little pricey but worth every cent

kind of Southern
They advertise southern fare but except for grits and bisquitsI didn't see much. But the food is southern-inflected and very good.
8/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
went with family - outstanding food - every single dish and morsel of food was incredible. menu is not huge, but for a reason. go early to beat the rush for the chef.

Delicious and Fresh
My husband and I tried Escape by sheer coincidence, and absolutely loved it. Delicious, fresh locally sourced ingredients and a warm environment. We really enjoyed the menu and the ambience. Can't wait to return.

Nice farm to table themed
Nice farm to table themed restaurant with talented chef producing tasty, inventive dishes. Members of the waitstaff seem to outnumber tables, but they are running around like headless chickens, getting little done - we waited a very long time for our entrees. Montclair is a tough, foodie town. The chef is competitive in this market, but Escape has work to do in the realm of service and decor - the barn-like decorations don't work.

Great dining experience
We were very happy with our experience here. The menu is equally wonderful for meat eaters and vegetarians. The food was delicious. It was very fresh, as it comes from local farms. The preparation was very exquisite, the result was excellent taste without lots of salt and fat. I had the BBQ tofu and collard greens and the grilled tomato and watermelon salad. Both outstanding. Light but filling. I also sampled the cheesy grits and mac and cheese both delicious. I thought the service was very good. We went during the week and the noise level was such that my 83 year old father could hear, we had a great time. The after dinner chocolate and lemon squares were outstanding. We were very pleased.

Great addition to the Montclair
Great addition to the Montclair food scene ! Imaginative menu that changes daily.

This was our third time dining
This was our third time dining at Escape and the least positive. Saturday night was very crowded and noisy, not relaxing and enjoyable. I think the service suffered a bit due to high demand. The food was also not quite as great as it had been on previous visits.

Third time and each time the
Third time and each time the food was outstanding. A real gem in Montclair. The entire menu is balanced and well prepared.
I cannot say enough about the quality of the cooking. Definite find for "foodies". Not inexpensive, but absolutely worth it.
Wayne, the head server is funny and very knowledgable.
9/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
a new spot
The Hanger steak was as tender and delicious as any cut of beef I ever had and the pickled beets were just as great.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Creative and local
Not just the typical run of te mill local food selection - truly thoughtful combinations, lots of choices for all palates. Despite other reviews we did not find the portions to be small or the service anything other than hospitable. No rush- no doting, but there when you needed them. Definitely going to go back soon.
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first time dining at Escape and we weren't disappointed. The selection is small but the food is fresh and flavorful and beautifully presented. The portions are perfect and all four of us ate every morsel on our plate. We left sated but not stuffed. We will be back.
9/24/2013 5:00:00 PM
Worth the trip
I don't need decor, so don't let the low ambience score throw you off, just rating it along the lines what I think most folks would think. The food was terrific, good clean flavors, well executed style of cooking that I really love. If you like Farm to Table, not only is the food good, but the pricing is fantastic.
The service was spot on, attentive and helpful and never intrusive at all. I felt at home.

Dinner at Escape - 10/4/2013
Food was delicious. Plates are small - for me this was fine but my husband wanted to go home to eat something. He thought the salad was tiny and very expensive. Menu changes daily so there are not as many options if you have a limited diet. My husband had the halibut which he said was delicious. He would have liked a larger portion. Ambiance was nice. This restaurant is open only 5 months. Prices are a bit steep.
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is the best restaurant
This is the best restaurant around. Have been there at least six times and never disappointed..

we LOVE Escape
it's our new go to restaurant. the dishes are special and prepared differently every time we dine. The food is absolutely amazing and the service is best in class!! we LOVE Wayne the maitre D' - he's on top of everything to ensure all is PERFECT.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went to Escape for our anniversary and it was fantastic. The food was amazing, I loved everything we ordered. The place is BYO which helps bring the price down; however, it is pricey even without alcohol. It was worth every penny. The only negative in my mind is the atmosphere. It was brightly lit and all the tables were close together because it's a smaller space. I personally prefer a more intimate dining experience but I would still highly recommend this restaurant!
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Among the BEST!!
This is by far one of the best restaurants my wife and I have been to anywhere and definetly in New Jersey. Everything is farm fresh, served beautifully and is very tasty. we have been twice already and had different things both times. They were all so good we couldn't decide which were the best. The service is attentive without being overbearing. Bring your favorite bottle of wine and enjoy!

Best in Montclair right now
Everything was perfect - food, timing, service - just outstanding. Went for my husband's birthday and we were both completely blown away. Had an 8pm Sat reservation, got seated right away. The decor is unexciting but pleasant (a little loud but no worries for us) - and everything else about the experience is just wonderful. Had the foie gras and an assortment of hams and cheese for appetizer, duck and the best short ribs you've ever had as entrees, another cheese course, and carrot cake and chocolate cake for dessert. Plus they brought a fun ice cream soda for his birthday. Didn't feel too rushed OR too slow. Everything was just perfect. Highly recommended.

Runs with the Montclair aesthetic
Farm to table is the new buzz word (well, maybe not so new on the West Coast....) and of course, Montclair needed to keep up. Charming and noisy place with appropriate earnestness. Portions are small but very tasty, prices are what you'd expect for this kind of preciousness. It should suit the town's organic bougie tastes very well. We enjoyed many of the dishes, interesting flavor combinations, though my veal chop was unhappily fatty. Everyone agreed a tad more volume for the price would have made it more "must revisit" worthy.

Finally Picking Up Steam
We visited this restaurant when it first opened and again a month or so later. We were worried it wouldn't make it because it never seemed crowded. Saturday the place was finally packed. Was happy to see such a unique, excellent dining experience was appreciated by others. We'll continue to repeat dine at Escape even though there are many other options in Montclair.

Great, interesting food. Service
Great, interesting food. Service a bit slow, but very friendly.

Escape- Farm to Table
Ate at Escape the other night for a GNO. The food was delicious. Every dish that they brought to the table was full of flavor and beautifully presented. Portions are smaller than what you see in other restaurants but none of us left hungry. We all loved it. They even have a seperate vegetarian menu.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
A fabulous meal
A very small restaurant but you didn't feel cramped,we where 4 so we had a table by the wall. The menu was so interesting it was tough to choose. I had the tuna app as well as my husband, my husband had two app. Instead of an entree. I chose the duck, it was the best duck I ever had. The wait staff was good but confused at times.

a bit of the South in Montclair
wonderful grits, terrific barbecued and fried chicken, and oh, those potatoes. And try their goat cheese cheese cake! A great new addition in Montclair

Wonderful new gem
I had been eager to try this place and I was not disappointed. Went to lunch and had the prix fixe and will definitely go back for dinner.

Intimate birthday dinner
We went to celebrate my husband's birthday on a Tuesday night. The place was pretty quiet with only one other couple there. More couples joined as the night progressed. The food was great. In addition to dessert which was a yummy deconstructed carrot cake, the owner gave my husband a yummy root beer float as a gift. Nice touch!

Great Montclair find
Escape is a wonderful, unassuming restaurant with some of the best food in montclair. The chef is fantastic creating dishes that pop with flavor, fresh from local farmers. A great addiction to the dining scene. A must try.

Elevated Comfort Food at Its Best
Visited Escape for the homage dinner it had to commemorate the passing of Chef Charlie Trotter. Had the 3-course dinner featuring three dishes from Trotter's first cookbook and it was super. Lamb tartare was fresh and flavorful, the poached salmon over lobster mashed potatoes was delicious and the Meyer lemon pudding cake was light and dreamy. Had a bowl of the best grits I've ever had topped with lobster - a must try dish.
BYOB afforded me the opportunity to uncork a couple bottles I'd been wanting to try.

Escape has only been open for 6 months. Its menu and brick walls feel like they have been there, just right, for a long time. Our server knew the menu well and was happy to make sensible recommendations. He explained "I'm the manager. The chef is the owner." That explains a lot. Excellent chef, caring about quality and detail. The "manager" was not a charmer, but was helpful without being overbearing.
We were there for lunch. The choices were fully appropriate and nicely varied . We chose the 3 course lunch option, of appetizer, entree, and dessert for a very fair $15. The portion of the carrot cake was smallish but felt just right for lunch. And was delicious.
As my young guest proclaimed, "We'll be back!"

4th visit did not disappoint!
Two lunches and now two dinners - love the creative menu here and that it changes frequently - the prix fixe is a great deal!

Fresh and delicious
My husband and I went there and there is nothing bad about this place. Farm to table at its best and a reasonable for this type of cuisine. Also the cornbread is beyond amazing!!!
12/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
I was expecting small portions after reading many reviews but was pleasantly surprised- The appetizers and main course were a perfect size! I had the french onion soup and scallops and both were excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The desserts were the only downfall. The food was fresh and amazing.!!!
