overall pretty good
We really enjoyed the bar, the beer selection, the ambience, and the mussels for dinner! Sweet potato frites were a refreshing option, so we chose one each of the regular potato and the sweet potato. Our waitress got my husband's order wrong, but we didn't mind b/c the Mushroom Mussels with Truffle Cream were delicious!

Mother's Day Brunch
Mother's Day Brunch. For the most part, the food was very good. And of course, you cannot beat their beer selection if you're willing to order it at 11 in the morning. The complimentary "Ma"mosa was a nice gesture for the Mama.

Mussels to die for...
The Mussels here are to die for... Provencal & Mushroom Mussel dish are delicious. Been here a few times already and I'm never disappointed. Highly recommend the place...

Amazing food and service
I couldn't get enough food here. My wife and I split 2 apps and both had a mussel dish. Not wanting to end the meal I ate the lamb entrée and it was phenomenal. The strawberry crème brulee was just okay. However, that didn't deter from one of the best meals I've had in the Bethesda area. Well done, chef. The wine selection was also something that was over the top and the glass of red my wife paired with her meal was fantastic. On top of the food itself, our service was amazing. We initially sat at our table for far too long without anyone coming to us and he spent the rest of the meal making sure we were well taken care of. I will definitely go back to this restaurant and will expect nothing but the best. Thank you!

My husband and I come here at least twice a month for lunch. The food is excellent, especially the crab cake, steak frites, and the onion soup. Very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff. The ambiance of the place is a bit boring, but we go for the food not the decorations. Great wine list. Planning to bring friends next time.

Another hit for Robert Wiedmaier
After frequenting Brasserie Beck for years I happened to be in Bethesda and had wanted to try Mussel Bar & Grille for a while. We were not disappointed in both the food quality and service that I have come to expect from a Wiedmaier restaurant. Our waiter, Ross, was excellent and very informative on the extensive beer list. We ordered the crab soup and the grilled calamari which were both excellent. For dinner we had the Wild Mushroom mussels, the Kobe beef burger and the soft shell crabs. The mussels were the best most freshest mussels I have ever had. Turns out the come from Washington state and are very delicious! My friend who is a burger freak said the Kobe burger was the best burger ever! The soft shells were fresh and good too

pleasant evening at Mussel Bar
We wanted to eat outside, and we sat at the bar while waiting for a table. Nice vibe at the bar and the bartenders were friendly and accommodating. Great selection of beers! Dinner outside was good. You get the people-watching along with your meal. The food was really good - we both got mussels. Mine had really good sun-dried tomatoes. They did not taste like they came out of a jar. Good bread for dipping. I had sweet potato fries that were steaming hot and crispy. Everything was delicious! The service was slow, but when the food came it was hot and fresh.

I have eaten mussels at many restaurants, and these were the best prepared mussels I've ever been served. Care was taken to ensure that the mussels were cooked to perfection.

We had Father's Day brunch here and it was very enjoyable. The french toast is fantastic, as well as the huevos rancheros. Nice outdoor seating area and not too cramped. We'll definitely come back for the mussels!

The right glass for the beer
Mussels are the obvious choice at this restaurant and they did not disappoint. The beer menu is extensive and if you like your Belgian beers in the proper glass, this is the place to go. The noise level is above "energetic" as noted in this review. It is close to a conversation stopper. Just be prepared to shout, enjoy the wonderful mussels and beer and have a great time.

I went to Mussel Bar for my birthday, with family and friends. There were food choices for all (plain burger for picky 9-year old), and the mussels were the best I have ever had! Service was prompt and friendly to our large group.

Mussel Bar is a great find for a casual, neighborhood place. It was a bit loud, but the service and food were excellent. We will definitely add this to our "must go back" list.

Foodie food without the pretension
Mussel Bar has a great atmosphere, foodie food without the pretension. We had a reservation and were seated right away. Food was excellent - I can recommend the bacon, tomato, arugula flatbread, mussels (with mushroom broth), and the steak frites for the non-seafood-eaters. The desserts weren't as spectacular as the meal (Boston cream pie and creme brule), but it's a great place and we'll definitely go back. Lively, but not too noisy, and great background music too.

A delicious Sunday dinner
Last time we dined at Mussel Bar, it was a bustling Friday night crowd-- could barely hear the person speaking across the table. An early Sunday dinner was quite a different experience- much quieter and for us, more fun. We were hungry and the food did not disappoint. Mussels (Thai style) were lovely and savory and my only regret was that I ran out of bread to sop up the sauce. My husband had the shortrib - it was perfectly prepared and delicious. Had the Antigoon Double Blond ale on draft- very good.
Will come back again.

Went for Belgian Restaurant Week, had the 5-cheese onion soup, beef carbonara, and cherry creme brulee, shared the mussels with bacon and mushroom sauce. The onion soup was not crusted over with cheese like I was expecting, but still very tasty. Beef was very tender but slightly uneven. The mussels with fries were outstanding, although honestly we had so much bread with the sauce we barely got into the fries. Then the dessert came out and it was this generously-large thing topped with whipped cream and cookies and a cherry. Would have had a beer but I was driving.
Would visit again! I was there on a Wednesday at 5:30 and it filled up quickly. Reservations recommended.

We went with friends it was their first time, we all enjoyed the mussels, beers, tarte, waffle dessert, we will go back. James provided a great service.

The mussels Provençal was delicious. Not salty, not sandy just delicious. The amount of food was fair for the price. The beer selection, if you like Belgian/Austrian/German beers, which you should, is awesome. It's hard to find Kölsch anywhere let alone at a mussel bar in Bethesda. I'd recommend going here for lunch or brunch. The menu has a good selection and the food is good and filling.

Mussel Bar is one of our regular
Mussel Bar is one of our regular spots in Bethesda. Good food and a great beer selection. The great beer selection, however, is extremely pricey, and if you're sitting inside on a weekend night, it can be overwhelmingly loud. The good food makes it worth it, especially if you snag a table outside. A solid choice.

Everything was great. Mediterranean style mussels with goat cheese, wonderful.

Mussel's in the City
If you're a fan of mussel's and downtown Bethesda, this is the place for you! The service is great and the prices are right. You get to choose from different serf and/or turf meals to satisfy your craving.

Excellent service, food was great, not the best but great. Will definitely return again.

great food, great service
They have a new menu that has a lot of variety. Still focused on seafood, but there are some meat options. Our party tried the softshell crab sandwich and the lobster roll...all at prices that are very reasonable. I had the special of tartar duo that was outstanding! All the servers are knowledgeable and very pleasant.

Best mussels I have ever had!
My wife and I love mussels. The arrived perfectly cooked, not overdone as it is so easy to do. They were also very clean, no sand at all. We really enjoyed them. We ate outside on a beautiful night and our waitress was very attentive. Try it, you'll like it!
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was perfect. We ordered the calamari and the crab soup as an appetizer and had the Kennet Square Mushrooms Mussels. We ate it all up.

Mussels & Beer
We went for the mussels and Belgian beer. Both were excellent. They have a large selection of beers, especially Belgian ones, so we were very pleased with that. The mussels Provencal I had were excellent as well. My wife had the the spicy Thai mussels and she liked hers very much as well. My 11 year old daughter also had the Provencal and finished it off so I'm sure she liked it. My 9 year old son ordered the game hen and he said he liked it and did finish it. So the food we had was all very good.
The staff was friendly and service was prompt.
For a mussel bar I'd say they need to add some more different mussel dishes. Currently they have 5. I would recommend getting rid of some of the entrees and adding more mussel dishes.

Great beer and mussels
I enjoyed this restaurant. The service was very friendly. The food was very good and we loved the draft beer selection. Great place for great food in a relaxed atmosphere

Always a hit
I love Mussel Bar Bethesda. Always a great atmosphere, good service, and very accommodating when I needed some dietary modifications to my dish. And it was still excellent! I will go back again and again.

Great great great!!
My sister and I visited this restaurant on Saturday night and it was great! The prices were reasonable for the quality of food. I was able to get a meal size portion of mussels for $24. Now of course we had drinks and a few other items which caused a higher tab. The only criticism I have for this restaurant/bar, is that the soft drinks are only served in small 8 oz bottles without refills. Each bottle is $3. I did not like that sodas were so expensive. However, the beer was outstanding (312)!

At 8 PM on a Saturday night, I lower my expectations for any restaurant. When we arrived at the Mussel Bar and Grill, the place was packed; loud and energetic, but our table was waiting. I really appreciate restaurants that honor reservations. Our waiter was terrific, prompt, just the right amount of attention, but not hovering. He had great knowledge of the menu and beers and led us to great choices. I expected the grilled calamari to be overcooked on a Saturday night, but it was perfect, the mussels Mediterranean were unbelievable, the best you will ever have. My spouse had the clam appetizer and loved it, everything perfectly matched with the right beers.
Will be back soon.

The mussels were amazing: full of flavor, piping hot, yet tenderly came out of the shell.
Extensive bar list.
Our group of 4 had a reservation but arrived separately within 5 minutes. The waitstaff was unable to connect us and seated us at 2 separate tables. Not sure why they could not connect us.
The 80's music was a bit too loud.

First time - great time
This was my first time at the Mussel. I had mussels in cream sauce - delish. My guest had a burger. Both were incredible! We also had the pork belly appetizer. Nothing to speak of there as i've had better but well spiced. The service was outstanding. I made a special request when booking and it was executed like clockwork. Table service was outstanding - everything you would expect at the right time. I will most definitely be back!

Tasty food, noisy atmosphere
The food is always good here, but diners need to have a high tolerance for noise.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Always worth a visit...
A lot of good food for the money if you just have the mussels which come with fries. Innumerable beer choices make matching your tastes with the food more than possible. Lots of other menu choices if you are not yearning for mussels. Our only complaint was the wait even though we had a reservation.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had a very nice meal with three generations of family. Was quiet on a Sunday night. Very good mussels and the grilled calamari is outstanding. Salads and soups were also very good. Steak was nothing special, but alright. Salmon was good. Great beer list, good cocktails and wine selection. Ambiance is nothing special. Good service.

little bit of a let down
Beer - Check. Mussels - Check. $19 lobster roll that left you hungry - Check. Mussel Bar is a great add to bethesda with simple food cooked well but nothing that blows my mind. Hefty volume of mussels but for that price, you should get that much. the Flatbread was on the small side and the lobster roll disappeared in 4 bites . .. fortunately, we had enough other food to balance out the meal. Would like to see this place improve with more filling portions and more moderately priced drinks and with greater variety on the menu. a bit limited given all it could offer
