Over all, Mason Pacific really impressed me. This small neighborhood gem really blew my socks off; from their food quality and presentation to their service, everything was fantastic! The prices are great, however they really nail you with the wine list. Their pretzel bun burger and fried chicken app are the two best things on the menu. I can't wait to go back!!!

Amazing rib eye for two
We had a great meal here. The highlight was the rib eye for two. Perfectly cooked, beautifully aged, great crust, and with a tray of great condiments to choose from (remoulade, house salt, pickled onions, jus, etc)
The rest of the dishes wee very good too (octopus, pasta dessert)

Wonderful carafe pinot! Also
Wonderful carafe pinot! Also enjoyed our food very much, though found the menu a bit limited.

quality not quantity
This little restaurant packs a punch. They have a small dining room and a menu with fewer items than typical which turns out to be a fabulous thing. Everything they prepare is splendid so you can't go wrong with your order. Two people at our table of seven had the fish and said it was the best they have ever had. We ordered appetizers to share and everyone of them were superb. Pace yourself for dessert because it is not to be missed.

One of the few nice places in the neighborhood open late on Sundays. Loved the food and atmosphere!

A neighborhood gem!
Chef Sean McTiernan's creativity, exceptional taste and technique, and attention to detail are on a whole 'nother level. The staff is gracious and perfectly attuned to your needs, and the space is gorgeous. Kudos to all who have brought this space to life!
We LOVED the side dish of mushrooms as an app -- earthy and meaty. The fried chicken was pretty special, too. Go heavy on the hot sauce to highlight the flavor and crunch.
My favorite entree was the Halibut with Pepperoncini Sofrito. So delicate, fresh, and bursting with delicious contrasts and textures. The burger was ridiculously good too. I'd recommend getting it cooked medium rather than medium rare. The wine list and the peanut butter chocolate pot-de-creme are stellar, too.

Great date night out
Reservations enabled us to walk in and get seated immediately.
Octopus appetizer + ribeye entree was amazing. A very different eating experience from a traditional ribeye where huge hunks of meat are sliced off and devoured quickly while hot and still mooing. This entree involved slicing off of tiny chunks of meat, then dipping in one of 12 side sauces and savoring each bite slowly and then deciding which sauce was next.
The octopus looked quite good paired with some greens, though appeared overcooked. Though one bite changes whatever appearances may have fooled you. Seasoned well, with just the right amount of char, was a great starter.
My regret is coming here with 2 stomachs when so many other appetizers and dishes look amazing.

Good food but odd menu
The food was good and portions were generous but it was a small menu for the main dishes and many choices for appetizers. Also the appetizers were large portions--the steak tartar was the size of a hamburger and another appetizer was fried chicken with a leg and thigh being the appetizer portion.

This wonderful little restaurant replaced a topas place and it is far superior now. They really payed attention to the whole atmosphere and experience here, from the decor, to the menu, to the service, really all around a great place. Sit in the bar with friends, and in the dining room for special occasions.

Outstanding experience...food, service...will return soon! Loved the menu as it was short but very well rounded. Loved the smoked cod and tartare appetizer. The papperdelle with lamb sugo was exceptional.

Very good first time experience.
We live in North Beach and are used to consistent good dining experiences. Mason Pacific was equal to or better than anything we've experienced in our immediate neighborhood. Will definitely return.

I love MaPa!
This is a great looking reastaurant with excellent food. Don't miss the octopus, fried chicken, tagliatelle , halibut, or chocolate dessert.
You really cannot go wrong in this charming place.

A test in patience
Sometimes variables are outside your control. This certainly was the case this past saturday evening when I took a group to Mason Pacific. What was supposed to be a double date - turned into a date + a mommy/daughter. Unfortunately our group was the worst type of guest: late, loud, + child, 1/2 sober, etc. Despite a plethora of curve balls that we kept dishing out, the service was outstanding, as was the food. The restaurant performed flawlessly and the patience and professionalism with which they handled a difficult situation was admirable. I hope to return and blend in un-noticed (I was a bit red-faced leaving after breaking so many rules of etiquette) because the food, service, wines, and staff are outstanding. Thanks !

Great food expensive wine
I made a reservation for two here on a Friday night, and even though we were significantly late (25 min) the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We sat down and ordered potato skins, and the beet appetizer to go with a couple glasses of wine. The wine list seemed a little too fancy ($$$$) for the casual ambiance and menu offerings ($$). (80-90% of the wine menu is more expensive than 25% of the dinner entrees) We followed up our appetizer with the Lamb Sugo Pappardelle and the Halibut. Both were perfectly cooked and superbly delicious.
Ultimately, this is a restaurant that serves great food, but is stuck somewhere between being a casual dinning experience and an expensive wine bar. Should be listed as ($$$) if you drink wine.

But the food and service was just okay. the fava bean app was just alright, same goes for the burger and tagliatelle. We expected to be blown away by the flavors but were not.

Gem of a Restaurant!
We just moved to Nob Hill and found Mason & Pacific at the cross roads of Nob Hill, Russian Hill and Chinatown. Amazing food and excellent wine list! Highly recommend the steak and burger and the appetizer list is impressive. A great little neighborhood restaurant!

Love this place
I went there for a special occasion. We had a reservation, and when we got there they were very busy and couldn't seat us right away. The staff was very apologetic and ended up giving us a free appetizer because of our wait. We got the rib eye dinner for 2 which I would highly recommend. The house wine there was incredible. And the heirloom tomato salad appetizer was delicious. The service there was second to none. Overall I really enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

We had a beautiful anniversary dinner at Mason Pacific. We live a couple blocks away, and this spot is a welcome addition to the neighborhood! The food was inventive and delicious, the service was attentive and overall we had a lovely experience. The ribeye for two was perfectly cooked, and the accoutrements were a fun and interesting addition. I definitely want to drop by the bar soon for a glass of wine and that amazing looking pretzel burger...

Must go back. Foodies delight.
Everything spoke to first class establishment. Very creative recipies. Great wine list...but too great..prices that is! Like to see good wines not priced "over the top".

A great vibe
This is one of my favorite restaurants. Love the imaginative menu, great wine selections and the service is friendly and very knowledgeable.
9/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were a party of four and had a lovely window table. The noice level was very manageable. The service was not rushed. Foofd choices were interesting - we all enjoyed our meals.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
My experience at Mason Pacific could not have been more positive. The staff was very kind and accommodating but most of all, the food was absolutely sublime. Arguably the best fried chicken I've ever had. My party of 5 and myself continued to rave the entire weekend about how good our dinner was and how much we enjoyed this place. Go there!

This was my second visit to
This was my second visit to Mason Pacific and it was just as lovely as the first time. I was disappointed that the brandade was no longer on the menu but everything was delicious, the service was perfect and it is really just a very relaxing and enjoyable place to be.

Lovely meal in a beautiful setting
We had a fabulous time. The food was impecable, as was the extensive wine list. The decor was inviting and beautiful and the service was spot on. Try the Crispy Feta, and the New York Steak- both delicious and the steak was cooked perfectly rare, as requested. Our desserts were fabulous, too- the Humphrey Solocombe ice creams worked beautifully with the seasonally available Apple Crisp with Cinnamon Whipped Cream. Great food, service and ambiance. Highly recommend.

Quality food, exceptional service
Came for a birthday dinner on Sunday night. The restaurant is beautiful (A), the service is outstanding (A+), and the food is good (B), but not outstanding. It's probably a little overpriced and the portions are a bit small, but I would still recommend it.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Perfect little neighborhood gem
Unexpected location. Beautiful interior. Warm ambiance. Really good food and wine list. Loved it.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing food, enthusiastic service, great ambiance, and we has a celebrity sighting (Kanye West). Def would go back!!

Casual and carefully crafted
It's tough to find casual fine dining in the Downtown SF area without having to head down into the seedier side of town or stuffy steakhouses and typical run-down old SF tourist traps.
This place is a true neighborhood gem - on a quiet block, with friendly attentive service and simple, fresh and delicious food. Highly recommended! This chef and team truly cares about their food and customers and it really shows.

Unique food selections
Dinner at Mason Pacific was a wonderful surprise. The menu offerings were different -- smoked octoupus appetizer was ample to share and the most tender we have ever had. I had an outstanding mushroom pasta topped with a poached egg. It was the best pasta dish (homemade pasta, of course) that I have had in a very long time. There were different kinds of mushrooms cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The wine list was also very good. The ambiance was quiet and sophisticated, but there were a few tables outside too that would be more casual. We will definitely go back.
10/5/2013 5:00:00 PM
Early dinner was delicious
We had a 5:00 p.m. dinner reservation, they were printing up the menu so we knew the ingredients would be fresh. Professional wait person, Excellent beet salad, then the pasta with lamb ragu was rich & flavorful, though the pasta was a little too al dente. My wife had the buttermilk chicken starter for a second dish & it was some of the best fried chicken we've ever had. The tea service & expresso lungo was outstanding. All in all, we'd return if we were in that part of SF again.

Superb steak, best mashed
Superb steak, best mashed potatoes in town and great deserts. Could not have been better.

Mason Pacific Restaurant
This is our second visit to Mason Pacific. The first time we sat in the dining room. this time we sat in the bar window table for 2. It was interesting to watch the passing neighborhood people and the cable cars. The wines by the glass were good especially the syrah. salmon was terrific as was the ravioli with black truffles. we live in the neighborhood so we will go again.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
LOVE this place
I will absolutely be returning to and recommending Mason Pacific to friends. I have nothing negative to say about this place and I can't decide whether I like the food or atmosphere better. Very quaint location, great lighting, romantic ambience and absolutely delicious food. The house carafe of wine was also a great value. Added bonus: Valet service!!
This is a must try!

Amazing new place!
We have now been to Mason Pacific 3x, and we LOVE it! Small and personal, with elegant setting. The chef is amazing...every dish was special. Don't miss this spot!
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
My local friends had not heard of MP but they have now! Menu was an eclectic mix of upscale and casual food. Everything sounded so good, but ended up with the burger which was phenomenal! The bartender brought me a side of their potato skin crisps with Parmesan....yum! Wild mushrooms were delicious!
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had another incredible
We had another incredible meal at Mason Pacific. From the corner booth window table, to our charming and witty waiter "James", to the perfect meals, it was a great night. Cannot say enough about the all around quality of this restaurant.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our 2nd visit and again the food was very good.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
would def. come back!
my only complaint is the staging of the 4 dishes we ordered for the two of us....bringing two at the same time, allowed the other dish to get cold...would have preferred them one at a time, to have more time to enjoy each dish individually....
10/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellently prepared, high-quality
Recommended by a local SF friend as an newish up-and-coming place, got an early reservation to allow for making it to SF Jazz show. Quite small menu but I think that works to one's advantage in quality and taste. I had the NY Strip, she had trout. Both came with seasonal, well-herbed root vegetables. Apple crisp was great, buttery delight.

Nice neighborhood restaurant
We're not from San Fran but were looking for a highly recommended restaurant for dinner and came upon Mason Pacific. We weren't disappointed. My burger was great and my spouse's steak was very good. We ordered a salad and the green beans on the side. We enjoyed it very much.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
We had a great night!
We went as two couples and had a wonderful time! Chef Sean's food was outstanding and he even quietly came to the table to explain and serve himself (we didn't know it was him until later). The dishes were flavorful and delicate and the atmosphere was intimate but celebratory. Great wines and great fun! A hidden gem in an in-between neighborhood, but valet parking made it easy. A big recommendation for Mason Pacific!

Everything was great Wish
Everything was great Wish the menu was just a little longer with more main course options.

Relaxed fine dining
Great food, carefully and thoughtfully prepared, good wine advice, excellent wines by the glass. Absolutely recommended.

A wonderful new find.
What a great dinner. Presentation and service were flawless. Food excellent. Lovely room. Next time we'll try sitting in the bar area.

San Francisco gem
Quintessential San Francisco experience - right on the Powell-Hyde cable car line. The food was delicious -- someone in the kitchen has a very delicate touch. Go now to enjoy the chef''s take on Dungeness crab. Everyone on the wait staff was knowledgeable about the wine and food preparation.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great new restaurant!
Drove by this place frequently, and finally made a reservation. The service was good, food was excellent and location is great for visitors (right on the cable car line). Definitely recommend.

Excellent all around
I hate getting hopes up for everyone else, but MP was delicious. I was 25 minutes late for a reservation and they were very flexible, granted it was a Tuesday night. I believe "casual elegance" is how they describe themselves and it's pretty much spot on. We chose primarily appetizers and one main, so unfortunately I can't comment much on the main dishes. A few comments on our appetizer choices:
- Crispy Feta - delicious, very very rich. I highly recommend taking advantage of the pumpkin puree it comes in as well as some sweetness to balance it out.
- Fried Chicken - Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Definitely utilize the tabasco.
- Octopus - If you're a fan of octopus elsewhere, you have to try it here.
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
Friendly and Good
Very warm welcome, comfortable dining room and attentive service. Loved the menu -- tried several small plates -- fried chicken, potato skins, lump crab meat with interesting sauces, kale salad and pasta -- all delicious! The space is small, and tables are pretty close together -- good for those who enjoy listening in on others' conversations! The trolley (Mason line) stop is right outside which makes this an easy stop for dinner on the way home.

Really liked it
This was our first visit here. We were early for our reservation but it gave us a chance to hang out at the bar area and watch the cable cars go by. The bar area is very nice with all the windows and very cool light fixtures. We really liked the crispy feta appetizer. We also ordered the tagliatelle pasta with crab and the new york steak, both of which were delicious. We would return.
