Great Spot for Pre-Concert Dinners
I always plan for dinner at John's City Diner before attending concerts at the BJCC. Love the convenience and the food is delicious. Great atmosphere and service.

Great Food, Excellent Service
The service was impeccible. We were greated by our server immediately. Our server was prompt with drink refills (we never had to ask - she just showed up!) Our server was kind, engaging and just fun! The food was delicious and served quick after our order.
One person at our table wanted Herb Crusted Chicken and was disappointed that they "were out".
I saw a friend at the restaurant on the same night as my visit and I later asked him "How was your meal?'" He said that they were out of Chicken and Waffles and that he was dissappointed.
Our visit was early (6:00 PM) on a Friday night, one would expect for all menu items to be available early on Friday nights.
All-in-all, a good experience though. I will go back soon!

Late Delight in Birmingham
When I first moved to Birmingham, I heard from several people that I had to try John's City Diner. I never did, because I was rarely downtown hungry. But on a recent trip that happened to fall during Restaurant Week, I went. I wish I had gone my first week in Birmingham, I enjoyed my dinner so much. The side salads were large and clearly made with fresh ingredients. I got the Trout Amandine, which was great. My boyfriend got the Meatloaf, which he enjoyed very much. For dessert, I got the Peanut Butter Pie (delicious), and he got the White Chocolate Bread Pudding (also delicious). John's City Diner also has many local (and not so local) craft beers. Our only regret for the meal was that we hadn't tried John's City Diner sooner.

Worth the wait
This was our first visit to this restaurant, and it was a decision based on feedback on OpenTable. We had reservations for 6:30 on a Friday night. When we arrived, we told the hostess that we had reservations. She told us she had just given away the only empty table right before we walked in. We waited for 45 minutes for a table to open up. Once we were seated, the owner brought us a complimentary fried okra appetizer since we waited so long (we both hate okra, but the gesture was nice anyway). Now to the good stuff. The food was AMAZING! We ordered the pimento cheese appetizer and it was better than good. My husband had the chicken and waffles and I had the pork chops with smashed potatoes and greens. Everything tasted fresh and homemade.

The menu is interesting and I enjoyed trying several different things. The food was excellent and the service was exceptional. The waitress was also our bartender because it was late at night on a week night and she did a great job of making me feel at home. I was traveling through Birmingham and she made me feel welcome. Will go anytime I am in that area. Perfect choice for a special evening.

Service and food = 2 thumbs up!
Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable and lots of fun. Food I would say was even better! They have an nice craft beer list, and cocktails are not to bad either. I love the relaxed diner atmosphere, makes you feel very comfortable and at home. I would strongly suggest the duck, it to die for. There is something for everyone to eat, and take my word for it you will not be disappointed.
