Lived up to expectation
I've been wanting to try out this place for a while, my husband is from New Zealand so we went on Saturday night and were not disappointed. Fantastic food, creative, nice sized portions (not too big or too small), hip vibe, relaxed, we were seated straight away and delicious. Its so nice to taste fresh veggies and herbs which make all the difference! Also great to go somewhere with space for your elbows and private conversation at your table without any of the snobbery you can sometimes have to incur. Overall great night out, wonderful wine list and looking forward to going back again.

Seems like this would be a nice neighborhood place, but it over-deliverd on every expectation. Excellent service on all fronts - warm greeting, attentive and knowledgeable waiter, terrific Somm and visit from Chef Lambert. As a displaced San Francisco foodie, its rare I find a New York restaurant that really delivers on the promise of fresh ingredients and excellent preparation. The Musket Room delivers. The food was exceptional and the wine pairings perfect. Only one complaint, which the restaurant likely has little control over, there were smokers convened outside the front door and when opened we were exposed to cigarette smoke that didn't complement the food. Moving the smokers down the street a bit would be nice.

We (four of us) loved everything about our visit on Friday night! The food was absolutely brilliant and perfectly prepared, not to mention GORGEOUS. There wasn't a single "meh" or "okay" item in the bunch. The service staff was perfect - totally accommodating and friendly while not being at all obtrusive. One of my best ever experiences dining in New York. I look forward to going back again on my next trip!

I went to Musket Room on a Saturday night and it was packed but not overly loud. Perfect restaurant for a date. The wine list was great and had a ton of great selections. The staff was very attentive and made sure that everything was perfect. The food was excellent. A few of the appetizer portions were a bit small but besides that everything was excellent. Definitely try the venison.

Fantastic haute cooking, lovely staff and relaxing room. Try the vension and the cod and the foie gras! Amazing Kiwi chef

Best dining experience ever!
We came here for my girlfriend's birthday and every person from the hostess to bartenders to waiters were exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. It was truly a magical event. We had the corn appetizer with truffles: exquisite. The smoked scallops presentation was like art. We split the steak and cheese was a perfectly cooked petit filet flanked with talleggio cheese and root vegetables with puff pastry placed on top. The duck with huckleberries had the same effect. Every dish was sprinkled with beautiful herbaceous flowers and meticulously designed. I loved how every dish was completely inspired. Will be coming back very soon.

Definitely one of the best
What´s not to love about the Musket Room? The food is outstanding (I wish we had tried one of the tasting menus, which I will probably next time), service is both friendly and stylish... this place has something more that makes you feel welcome and appeals to all senses. I very rarely feel the work of a chef deserves to be praised but in that case it does, and so does the whole team who made our evening a very special one. I understand the Musket Room opened just a few months ago and seems to be still underrated, yet it is now one of my favorite restaurants in Manhattan.

Food was fun and well prepared.
Food was fun and well prepared. Great ingredients and the service was wonderful in the beginning but once they started to get really busy it was noticeably scaled back. Would not go out of my way to visit again could be tempted by the foie gras bon bon. Would defintiely recommend others.

this place is not what you would expect in this neighborhood.
fantastic and innovative food without being pretentious

Wow!!! Had a delightful, wonderful and amazing dining experience. The
food was superb and enhanced greatly with our choice of wine. The tour of the garden,
with mint tea was an added highlight. A must do again.

A meal full of highs and lows
Food was excellent - delicate meldings of flavors. Recommend the smoked scallops and the corn custard, which was my favorite dish of the evening. My friend had the pork which was amazing and I had the tofu gnocchi, also very good. It came with a subtle chili sauce and the waiter recommended the perfect, slightly sweet sauv blanc to balance out the heat. However, it was slightly disconcerting/rude to have the hostess come up and request we move to the bar almost immediately after our plates had been cleared. I expect that kind of treatment at a bottomless brunch in Murray Hill, not at a restaurant where I've just dropped a couple hundred on dinner.

Well situated, nicely designed.
Well situated, nicely designed. Food is excellent. We were four and had different dishes and all were exquisite. The service was outstanding and after dinner they took us to see their garden and treated us with a cold tea made from herbs grown in the garden.
The only drawback is the noise level. This could easily be fixed by adding some acoustic elements on the ceiling and walls.

Nice but portions are
We had the 5 course tasting menu. The food was very good but a 5 course meal should be ample to satisfy one's appetite. This was barely there and my wife and I are not big eaters. The watercress soup which was tasty. The corn salad was excellent and beautiful. The scallops were a bit dry to our taste, could have used some sauce, butter or oil. The venison was our favorite dish, meaty but not gamey. The eggs and toast were good but kind of a throw-away. Seemed like a teaser to try the place for brunch and did not seem to fit with the overall progression of the meal. The dessert was fine but not any better than what a good restaurant should offer for dessert. Overall a nice experience but plan on having a midnight snack afterwards.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was creative and elegant, without being overdone. They start you off with fresh baked bread, the corn appetizer was awesome, and the octopus, deer and tofu gnocchi entrees were all delicious and unique. The foie gras appetizer and the chatham cod were also very well done, but a little less inventive than the others.
The service was impeccable and attentive and always friendly. They noticed when we were low on brioche for the foie and brought more. They realized when we ordered too much food, or uneven numbers of appetizers and portioned out the food so everyone could share.

This place is still slightly
This place is still slightly below the foodie radar. The main courses were excellent, especially the New Zealand red deer (venison)
and the steak and cheese pie (more a nice hunk of meat with a cheesy wafer) than a traditional British-style meat pie. The desserts
were okay, but slightly bland with overly creamy textures and not enough to bite into. Some oddball cocktails, but the bartender
can mix up terrific traditional martinis and manhattans. This block of Elizabeth Street is worth a visit, with interesting little boutiques
and upbeat eating and drinking places. The whole experience is well worth the trip downtown. The back room overlooks a charming
herb garden and the front room with a big bar faces a pleasant street scene.

We eat out a lot and through reading the Imaculate Infatiation Blog stumbled on this restaurant. The last thing we ever expected was this for the neighborhood it is in. Truly delightful in every aspect. Presentation of food was done in a careful and very nice manner, great combinations of ingredients and delicious.
The wine list is smallish but with great opposites in choices, but it could be a bit more varied. However, as the blog wrote, the somelier is very nice and if you have the right bottle, then who needs more choice?

Lovely, Interesting Food
We had been looking forward to trying this place and were not disappointed - we had a great meal here - the courses were well-thought out and well-executed, with good technique. Really appreciated the interesting flavors and the presentation. Favorite dish was the tofu gnocchi (it works!). Service was excellent - friendly and responsive, but not intrusive. The portions were very well-sized, but I would note that those with large appetites may find them on the smaller side.

The best New Zealand has to offer
This little gem, boasts inventive dishes that are sure to satisfy, with all the New Zealand flair you'd expect. Fresh, delightfully surprising, food with attentive, five-star service. Ask for a table near the garden in the back, and you might just get a peak at the chef cutting fresh herbs from the on-site garden for your meal. Pick one of the delicious wines, mostly grown in New Zealand to accompany your meal, and you can't go wrong. Highly recommend this new establishment.

Great food, but service a little spotty (took about an hour for desserts to come out, and nothing was said nor comped). Nice, rustic ambiance.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved it all: the great and very tasty food, the ambience, the location. It was right on. We will certainly come back!

My husband and I have been
My husband and I have been here twice, once in the main dining section and once at the bar. Both times we received suburb service, and could not have had a better night if we tried. All wait staff was attentive, the sommelier was insightful, and the food was incredible. We love that the ambience is refined enough for a date-night-feeling, and casual enough for a mid-week drop-by meal when we happen to be in the neighborhood. We will definitely be back again soon.

My husband and I were visiting NYC for our 5th anniversary. We were looking for something unique and I came across Musket Room. We love NZ and its food and wine so we were curious about Musket Room. The food was AMAZING. We had the tasting menu (6 courses) and all the flavors were wonderfully blended. We accompanied the meal with an Otago Pinot that was perfect. Don't ignore the cocktail list. The one I had was perfect. Not sweet and very unique. After dinner the staff were so nice. They walked us through the garden out back to show us some of the ingredients that they are sourcing from their little "farm". I would go back to Musket Room. No question!

Great service; attentive to details
My husband and I had a great meal at the restaurant. Service was excellent. The food, although the portions were small, was beautifully presented and tasty. I would return.

Over all a really good experience,
Over all a really good experience, with a few starter problems.
our reservation was for 8:45pm but we did not get seated before 10pm. The receiving hostess was new and she did not have a clue on how to handle a situation like this. When we finally got the main hostess, she was amazing. She was keeping us updated on time and she provided us with drinks and really tried to make us aware of the fact that this was not okay and how sorry she was for the delay. When we got our table, she had complimentary dishes waiting for us and more to come. We ended up getting the royal treatment. The food was amazing and I highly recommend the Tofu Gnocchi as well as their mixed juices.

The chef offers a unique combination of flavors and dishes. The venison with hints of gin and steak cheese pie were absolutely outstanding. There was a private event in the back room so we sat in front which was great.

First rate experience
Musket Room was first class in every respect: food, drink, ambience, decor, service. Dane, the sommelier (at least: he seemed like he also may be some kind of manager) was particularly exceptional.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
A fantastic gem!
I eat out at least 3 nights a week in NYC and this is the BEST new restaurant I have been to in at least 5 years! Certainly the best downtown. Amazing food. Inventive menu. Right sized portions and prices. Incredibly interesting wine list (try the dada 2 if they still have some) and attentive service. Relaxing interior with a great garden view. A true gem! Try it now before it gets so popular you can't get a table!
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
tiny portions but very good
neither my husband or I appreciate big portions. however, the Hamachi starter fit into a soup spoon and was more an amuse bouche than a starter. Same w/dessert, albeit delicious. food worth praising but disappointing on miniscule portions.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Stopped by The Musket Room for Saturday afternoon drinks one night and was lured in by the cocktail list and friendly staff. I've been back a few additional times for dinner or drinks and the experience has been outstanding across the board. The food at The Musket Room is top of the line to die for and everyone who works there is professional, well-trained, and intuitive enough to understand your needs before you even have to ask. Both a neighborhood gem and one of my favorite restaurants in the entire city.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM

Awesome service and good food. Nothing too special about the food but stellar waiters.

relaxed and stylish
What a nice and refreshingly pure restaurant.
I loved it!
The Gnocchi were exactly as comforting as I hoped for.

Unique Taste Sensations
Travel extensively, heavily peppered w/ many a corporate dinner at gastronomic extraordinaire locales. This one surprised & delighted - will certainly be returning when next in NYC.

My boyfriend and I went to The Musket Room last week after hearing about it on Twitter. There were some mixed reviews so we were a bit skeptical but after our experience I am more skeptical about those who gave negative reivews. The restaurant has great decor and ambience and the food was excellent. We had the quail appetizer to start and the steak and cheese pie and the red deer as our mains. For dessert we had the devils food cake with olive caramel. Everything was beyond fantastic. The price was right, especially given the quality of the food. We were more than full after this meal. The portions were definitely appropriate. I'd highly recommend this place!
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
We arrived 20.30 and chose to do the 6 course tasting menu, the efficiency of the place allowed us to leave two hours later (it was getting late for us). Food was awesome, with complex tastes totally confusing our taste buds. Started with the gazpacho which was awesome and it never dipped in quality right until the macaroons that accompanied the bill. And look out for their rye bread, it is so cool, 2.5" breads that looked and tasted good!
Service was impeccable, friendly, quick and efficient, and no grumpyness about us only drinking water.
The place was buzzing, and yet you never felt that they lost control of you at any time. And parking was in the street, easy as!
Would I return, you bet i would! Then for the 10 course tasting menu :)
11/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
I live on the Upper West Side and never travel all the way downtown for a restaurant of any kind. I have been all over the world and eaten in the very best of restaurants which is why I do not travel to find good food at this stage of my life. However, a friend told me about Musket Room and making my way to Elizabeth Street was well worth it.
The food is creative, beautiful and delicious. The service is lovely and attentive without being in the way. If you sit in the back room, the noise level is just fine. I say travel from wherever you are and have a great meal.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was outstanding, great restaurant. Highly recommended.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Get ready to be amazed!
An absolute delight! The food is remarkable - creative, beautifully displayed, with each course expertly balancing layers of flavors and textures. A nice selection of New Zealand wines pairs well, and the sommelier can tell a story about each. This restaurant will really stimulate your senses!

drinks are great. Food is creative and delciious. New Zeland deer is fantastic.. I would go back and bring breinds.

Great for a date.
Overall I would rate this a high 4 star restaurant. The menu items were creative and executed well. The ambience is very nice, unobtrusive and relaxed but still a lot of attention to detail. It is great if you are looking for very good food and service but with a casual atmosphere.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Loved every bit of this place!
This is such a good restaurant! The interior is very nice and the food is heavenly! Great staff, good vibe. I will revisit this restaurant next time im in New York and recommend it to all my friends!

Gives flavor a whole new meaning
Our dinner at The Musket Room was extraordinary in every way. Chef Lambert coaxes new tastes from familiar ingredients by his brilliant and creative combinations. He achieves textures that are pure perfection. We have been eating our way through some of the world's finest restaurants and we were wowed. The tasting menu is sublime both in overall composition and in execution of each course so it is hard to single out particular dishes, but perhaps the mushroom custard, bay scallops, foie bon bon, and gazpacho deserve special mention. The service matches the food. Our server and all the staff were incredibly knowledgeable, accommodating, and attentive without being at all intrusive, clearly dedicated to creating a superb dining experience.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
I can't say enough good things about this restaurant! I had the duck and it was a large portion. It was wonderful and the most tender duck I have ever had. The people I was had the venison and raved! The service is prompt and friendly - and the servers can explain the menu. The folks at the host desk are some of the friendliest people in NYC. We arrived about 5 minutes before our reservation and the restaurant was packed - we were seated on time. We enjoy the back room - it is pretty and a little less noisy (no "bar chatter"). We will be back!!
11/19/2013 4:00:00 PM
Really a nice experience for food, beautiful ambience....but really noisy...
Nevertheless we suggest to try this reastaurant. We took the 10 courses menu and we were really satisfied.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
We enjoyed the 6-course tasting menu. Most of the items were excellent. Tasting menus are always small portions, but one person in our group ended up having a snack upon returning home. If it weren't for the chocolate cake for dessert I wouldn't have been full either.
Plain rustic ambiance.
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
Fun City Dining Night
Only down side to our evening was the heat was not working in the bar area - however the fun and personable staff made up for it and we enjoyed hanging in the bar before dinner anyway! Had a great date night and it made our visit to NYC even better.
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
The perfect place to take a date or even to impress your parents. The service is absolutely gracious and extra hospitable. From the moment you walk in to the moment they say good night. The menu offers lots of choices a la carte and also offers the opportunity to have a 6 or 10 course tasting menu. Try the steak pie, the foie gras, the scallops, the quail, the mushroom custard, the tofu gnocchi! There's awesome New Zealand-inspired food for everyone. The wine list is well curated and also NZ focused. The desserts are really tasty too but overall the whole meal will be a show stopper. Sit in the back room if you can to get a nice view of their garden.
Go! You won't be disappointed. But make a reservation!

Fab dining experience. Gazpacho appetizer, amazing chicken and egg entree. They deconstruct the dishes. Nice done. Pans cotta was simple but delicate and elegant.

Everything was really wonderful,
Everything was really wonderful, from the warm greeting and friendly service to the great wine list and helpful and approachable sommelier, to the delicious and inventive food. The setting is lovely as well, a bit rustic but refined, and I'm sure the back garden will be wonderful come springtime.
