Fresh seafood & great service
This was our first visit to The Hake, after hearing good things about it. Our server was professional, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu---both food and drink. All of the seafood that was ordered was very fresh and tasty. Some dishes were better than others, but nothing was bad. One person ordered the hangar steak, which was cooked perfectly and had good flavor. The only complaint was that it was perhaps a bit too salty. They have a lot of appetizer/sharing options on the menu that look good, so it would even be fun to just go and make a meal of those. We will be back!

Food was very different, in
Food was very different, in a good way. Great sashimi style halibut special. Was with a group of five and shared several dishes. Hanger steak and frites got rave reviews as did the shrimp taco. Mussels had great broth, but a third of the order were not open. When manager? owner? came to check on our table and we mentioned this he immediately offered to "do the right thing" and not charge for the dish. Indicative of a customer service focus and plain common sense.
Those who had mixed drinks said they were very weak and seriously overpriced.
Not great for a group of more than 4-we were seated at a very small round table that made sharing very difficult, despite having a reservation.
Overall would definitely try again.

A great addition to La Jolla. Seafood was so very fresh and delicious. Not complicated with too much of this or that. Staff seemed a little nervous and over anxious to please. Think we had more than 6 different staff members ask how things were. All in all, great dining experience. Will definitely return.

Best place in sandiego
The food here is incredible! Everything is well prepared and super fresh! , the sashimi and tuna tostada are great. Congratz .

Felt like being in New York. Lively, great decor, great great food. Amazing.

There is a saying that character is made in how one responds to life's curveballs... Our waiter Joe and the assistant manager Dan all responded with poise in the wake of the snafu that occurred at the Hake on Saturday night. Thankfully our meal had already been served before the fire department arrived! The food and drinks were delicious! A definite solid meal and place for I recommend for a birthday celebration.

Great Food. Locals welcome
The husband and I went here for a nice dinner. We are mostly interested in the food. The Hake did not disappoint. The food was fresh innovative and tasty. The staff was friendly and helpful. They had live music that night and it was a bit loud for dinner.

What a wonderful place. Everything from the extremely fresh and original menu to the fantastic service, fabulous cocktails and really cool atmosphere was on point.
The food and especially the seafood is definitely the star here, but the decor, service an ambiance made the experience even better.
Went back two days later because I just craved the shaved rib eye and was not disappointed; if anything, we were even more impressed as the owner remembered us and the new items we tasted, were as good as the ones on the first visit.
An absolute gem of a place. Going back for happy hour soon.

Go to the Hake
Everything we ordered was so flavorful. Would definitely recommend The Hake and we will be back when we return to La Jolla.

Good eats in La Jolla!
Fresh and interesting flavors. Good menu for fish lovers. Dessert a must! Great service. Appeared owners and managers were all hands on deck ...so no one missed a beat with service and quality. Hopefully this will all maintian. Looking forward to be our regular place to eat!

Outstanding La Jolla gem !!
We have tried several restaurants in La Jolla, I have to say this one is truly outstanding in service, flavour's and menu choice.

Loved it !
Have now eaten here twice and look forward to returning. Food is wonderful.......light and delicious. Enjoyed the tuna tartar and ceviche especially. Don't usually like "small"plate" places, but these are so substancial they don't really qualify as small.
Even the men in our group were completely satisfied with 2 appetizers/dishes to share. Special shout out to Dan, the excellent manager and George, a terrific waiter.

Best new restaurant in La Jolla.
This is my new favorite restaurant in La Jolla. Sophisticated menu, great service, comfortable interiors, and they serve after 9pm on weekdays (a rarity in our town). It's a good spot for sharing small plates - the crudos are especially nice and the shaved ribeye is not to be missed.

We Will Return! And bring our dog!
So many interesting foods on the menu! Our table of 4 ordered from the various appetizer-ish items on the top of the menu and never even went to entrees (although we did see some yummy ones going to other tables). The chef knows how to make food interesting with every bite. The wine list was similarly interesting -- not extensive but good choices. Our waiter and the bus staff were very friendly, and the manager came by multiple times to check on us. There were some slow-downs in the kitchen and bar, and there is no view, but we will happily go again for the food and friendly service. Oh, and they are dog-friendly but the tables are limited so call to discuss it with them, even if you reserve on Open Table.

Fresh seafood- nice flavors!
The food was delicious with tasty, but not overpowering flavors. We ordered large appetizer plates to share and it was nice to get a variety- roasted octopus and tuna tostada were my favorite . I have to say, the service was absolutely outstanding and we wanted for nothing. Everyone working there chipped in and they seemed truly happy to serve!
The location is subterranean, so don't expect a view, but we did eat "outside" and it was pleasant on a warm evening.

Too noisy with the music.
Too noisy with the music. We would never go back on a Wed. night as we couldn't hear each other while talking.
9/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Awesome food. Best ceviche I've ever had. Everyone loved their meals and we all said we'd come back. Don't miss the coconut sabayon for dessert.

Great new find
I'm so happy we found this restaurant on Open Table. Being open only 2 months, I was surprised the waiter knew the entire menu and made some great suggestions for us when we asked. It's a casual place with all the accouterments of a fine dining restaurant. We will definitely go back again soon. They have a 2 great octopus option, something which is difficult to find in San Diego.

Wonderful Gem in La Jolla
The Hake was a fabulous restaurant. We dined there for San Diego Restaurant Week and it was amazing. Each course was fantastic. The setting was beautiful. Basically I love this place. Would highly recommend for a romantic night out or a small dinner with friends.

La Jolla Cove Gem
Seriously I didn't have that high of an expectation when I went to the restaurant, but when I finished my meal I was blown away by the service, the food, and the ambiance. Our server Joe was so friendly and active. He would be actively taking our orders, explaining the menu, and recommending dishes. One of the appetizer he recommended the "Smokey Maji Tacos" were to die for. The smokiness didn't cover up the fish flavor. Instead a really pure fish flavor came through from the seasoning. My grilled tuna steak entry was a little disappointing. The tuna was dry, tiny bit over cooked. I would have preferred it a tiny bit more rare.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was wonderful, our server was very knowledgeable and attentive and we loved the atmosphere. We were there for restaurant week, and I can't wait to go back to try the full menu! Their menu is full of lots of great plates to split, so I think it would be fun to go with a small group so that way you can try everything.
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best new restaurant in town. Great food and great service. Can't wait to go back. The tiraditos, the fish tacos, shaved ribeye and the octopus were outstanding. Just what La Jolla needed.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best Food Ever incredible place
This is by far the best restaurant i have ever been in san diego.
I am happy to finally have a New York quality place here
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dinner for two
My buddy and I went to Hake during restaurant week, and I was extremely impressed with their menu. The grill octopus was absolutely delicious. They had some great drink recommendations and we tried a good amount of them. Our waiter Gregory was very warm, not pushy, and helped make food decisions based off his recommendations. We sat outside and it was a beautiful night so the weather wasn't a factor but they did have heaters outside in case it starts getting cold.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
great food but too much noise
We had to wait a bit for our reservation but this was the first restaurant that I have been to in a long time that the staff appeared truly apologetic about the wait. Indeed, they gave us a free and very good appetizer to show their apologies. All of the dishes that we tried were excellent with well prepared fish/meat and good flavor combinations. The desserts were outstanding. My only complaint is that the noise level is very high so that it is difficult to conduct a conversation. It might help a bit if they turned off the music but the room itself, along with the packed-in tables, seems to accentuate the noise. I would love to eat there again for the food but would try the small outdoor patio which appeared quieter.

Superb seafood an d great service
We ate at the Hake on a Saturday night, the restaurant was busy with a very pleasant buzz of people. The Hake is a basement restaurant with an outside area to the front so no sea views like some other places around La Jolla but the focus here is on food and friendly and attentive service.
Both The steak wrap starter and Tuna steak with wasabi mash I had were delicious.

Great neighborhood gem
Fascinating food presentations in a warm and welcoming setting.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent drinks, excellent food, excellent service. The trifecta of awesome.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food outshone a waiter/guest collision resulting in spilled glass of wine. Everyone was gracious and apologetic.
Shortrib entrée and lime semifreddo dessert were an excellent pairing. Casual setting for fine food. We'll be back again.

New la Jolla fun dining
Enjoyed our 2 couple get together, started at 7.00 when it was quiet to talk by 9.00there was a loud buzz..energy and young people

2 birthdays and 1 wedding! We all enjoyed dinner. We were there on a Sunday night and may have been a bit much for the other diners. If they were enjoying their food as much as we were, they won't have noticed us. Kevin was a very attentive and informative waiter with a good sense of humor mixed in. Everyone on staff that we interacted with was wonderful. There was a nice selection of different foods and even convinced my brother to try octopus. Loved it all.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
Loved the smoked fish tacos, do not miss!Food was great ,but I thought portions were small and on the expensive side.Friendly and efficient service and vibrant bar scene.I would definitely revisit, but wish that portions were a little more generous.

Fantastic neigborhood gem!
This is a great local restaurant. We loved the tiraditos, and additionally to great seafood, we had a fabulous pork chop and burger. Amazing service and ambiance.

A little pricey (~$25 per plate), but food was outstanding!

Best tapas north of Mexico.
A welcome addition to the usual Steak or fish fare offered by most LaJolla restaurants. The seafood tapas are great. Try the tuna chicharron, paprika octopus with potatoes, shaved ribeye, shrimp tacos, and the best semi frozen key lime pie. Only nice place to go in LaJolla for a late nite dinner (and also open for a late lunch).
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
Went here on Saturday after Thanksgiving. Enjoyed the experience. Food was fantastic. All the fish dishes were top notch. The ceviche and hamachi appetizers were to of the best fish appetizers I have had a in a long time. Service was prompt and polite and server was very knowledgeable. The only negative is that this is an expensive meal. You pay for the high quality of fish. I knew that going in though and the service and food met my high expectations.

The Hake is a wonderful new
The Hake is a wonderful new addition to the restaurant scene in la Jolla. The food is fresh and the preparation is inventive. Not a huge menu which I like. I want to know that the owner and chef "have a point of view" . Excellent and well selected wine list. Fanciful and yummy desserts. All in all, a terrific experience!
