Great food and service!
We had a great meal at this new establishment. It is a great addition to the neighborhood. It's a beautiful space. The staff is friendly, well trained and motivated. Our server was gracious and knowledgeable about the menu. We started the stuffed eggs which came on a bed of fresh arugula, very tasty and perfectly seasoned. Next we shared a well prepared mixed green salad with nice chunks of blue cheese and a subtle dressing. We then split the fried chicken and the short ribs. Both were excellent. The short ribs were to die for.
We had several memorable meals from this chef when she was at the Purple Plum years ago so we were excited to try the new place. Its a winner for sure.
Thanks for a great first impression, we hope to be regulars!

Mother's Day Brunch
My group of 4 dined at Next Door for Mother's Day brunch. The staff was very friendly and answered all of our questions regarding the food. The day we ate there was their first brunch and the 10th day they were open. The food was good and had a nice variety. Everyone at my table ordered something different and were all pleased with their selection. The owner's wife walked around and greeted every table and handed each mother a tulip. The only downside to this cute new restaurant is that it can get quite noisy when the restaurant was full. Other than that, we had no complaints!

But I have a feeling they'll be better and better.
What's good? The decor, the staff, the food was very good.
The challenges? We waited 45 minutes after ordering for our food....and one of us didn't get their order until the rest of the table was finished eating. Never a good thing. Not the severs fault, the kitchen needs to get it together.
My sons said their scrambled eggs were the "best they had ever had." The blue corn pancakes were amazing!
We'll definitely go again and give them another chance. It was a nice Mother's Day and a big part of that was Next Door.

a real find
We walked in at 10:30am on a Sunday morning to find the place almost empty and worried that the lack of customers was a refection on the food. NOT SO. The menu is creative and delicious, and very reasonably-priced compared to other brunch places. And, they accept reservations. The chef came to our table to discuss the menu and later to check in. I will definitely return. Oh, and the place was full by 11:30!

Will Be Back -- Soon!
Excellent fried chicken: hot, crisp, moist and simply delicious
Collard greens and corn bread rank up there with the best I've tasted. I'm so looking forward to my next meal here!

It's a sleeper!
All our four entrees excellent: meat loaf, fried chicken, Swiss chard enchilada, and fish. The BBQ riblet appetizer was small for the price and the stuffed eggs bland. Limited, but excellent draft beer selection. They don't have a full bar and that would probably help their business. The place was virtually empty. It's a large beautiful historic venue. The owner was behind the bar, but didn't bother to greet us. The dining here is a good value.

My partner is severly allergic to gluten. We let them know in our reservation, and they had the menu clearly marked for her with all her possible options & substitutions the kitchen could provide. Thoughtful and impressive service - and everything we eat was delicious!

Had guests in town and saw some good reviews and decided to give it a try! Getting a table for 10 at 11am on a Sunday brunch was amazing. As the word gets out about this restaurant, bet that won't happen for very long! Good options on food. Had a problem with getting an order right and it took a while to be served but quality was good.

Big problem: too many deliciously tempting items to choose from. The fried chicken- I think I saw tears of joy amongst my group. The green beans that accompany said chicken- they could be an entree on their own...amazingly spiced. The fish- complex&unique taste. Pork chops so tender, you'd wish you had multiple stomachs. Ribs app- what flavor!! Don't EVEN get me started on the butterscotch custard. Just wow. The salt&smooth creaminess of it all. Delic and eye catching ice cream sandwiches. Bread pudding=ok, vanilla ice team alongside it tasted particularly perfect. Wine list- nice! Bottom line: do not be on a diet. If you are, just break it for once...soooo worth it. Quality eats, friendly service, comfortable open space.

Amazing fried chicken! sweet cornbread! Veggies to die for! Creative desserts to tempt one's palate. A great addition to the Berkeley culinary scene!

Upscale comfort food, "next door"
I love this restaurant! It's literally right around the corner from my house and I frequent it when I'm in the mood for a good "home cooked meal". The pork chop is amazing, juicy and tender with a flavor that makes my mouth water even thinking about it. The dish comes with vanilla-ginger sweet potatoes that are ridiculously good (I'd go there just for a bowl of those) and comes with greens that are perfectly southern and taste fresh. Love it. The burger is amazing, well seasoned and cooked to order. The fried chicken is no joke and is juicy and seasoned perfectly. I had it with the chicken and waffles once and the portion was small but the dinner plate is almost too much (fried chicken the next day is fine by me though). The owner is great!

4 Thumbs Up Fried Chickn & Meatloaf
I keep meaning to try other items on Nextdoor's menu (like their burger or mac & cheese), but somehow my dining companions & I can't help but order chef Sharon's fried chicken and meatloaf again & again -- both served with yummy mashed potatoes & gravy and a veggie (e.g., spinach, cabbage, string beans, collard greens & kale). Great comfort food here!

First time and sure to return
My partner and I dined there for the first time Friday night. Very few patrons and we had a reservation so service was quick. The food was delicious. I ate the flounder and he enjoyed the pork chop. Our wait staff was knowledgable and friendly. What a pleasant surprise on the corner of Alcatraz and Adeline!

We had dinner at Next Door for the first time last Friday and enjoyed the food and ambiance! We ordered Mac & cheese, greens, fried chicken, red beans & rice, ribs, the ice cream sandwich AND the custard and caremel dessert. Every single dish was delicious! You must give this place a try!

Comforting food, great space, nice!
This location has seen restaurants come and go, and as someone who lives within walking distance, I fervently hope Next Door is around for a long, long time. The vibe was just right: classy modern Southern comfort food, generous portions, friendly staff, all kinds of people, amazing Happy Hour deals on appetizers and drinks. We had the spinach enchiladas, red beans and rice, salad, and fried chicken. Everything was fresh and we waddled outta there with leftovers due to the substantial amounts served. Oh, did I mention their cornbread meets my definition of perfection? Not too sweet. Nice corn texture. Touch of maple butter. Heaven. Can't speak to desserts as we were too full to sample...until we go back real soon and save room!

Overall our experience was good to very good. The food, the everyday happy hour, the old-style building were all really wonderful. On the menu were Fried Chicken and Blackened Flounder, both very flavorful. The fried chicken was good, if not a touch too greasy. The Farmers Market salad was also very good. It would have been even better with farmer market nectarines that had flavor. Mine didn't. The Chop Salad was also very good--great lime dressing! Ginger Sweet Potatoes are a MUST!
The service was a mixed bag. Some of the staff were very helpful and others such as our waitress seemed tentative and unsure.
Every time we try a new restaurant, the question is always "would we go back?". The answer this time is definitely YES!

Now This Is My Kind of Restaurant
First, the food is outstanding. When they say it is prepared fresh they mean it. Best corn meal pancakes I've ever had. The biscuits are melt in your mouth. And their chicken is worth a drive from anywhere in the Bay. The ambiance is funky wonderful. A bar like you have never seen. Gorgeous but inviting. With so many restaurants to choose from sometimes you only go once, but we keep retuning to this warm, welcoming, incredible restaurant. In fact, we are going to have our after wedding Brunch here because it now feels like "our place".

Really good new restaurant
Next Door has a wonderful neighborhood feel to it. The server was attentive and seemed eager that we enjoy our meal. I had the brined pork chop, marinated and cooked to perfection. Sometimes brined dishes are too salty for me and this one was not. They served an ample portion of greens and mashed sweet potatoes. The greens were so good I could have just ordered a plate of greens! The sweet potatoes were too sweet, but a nice flavor and a good complement to the greens. The menu is terrific--not huge, but well thought out. There are also some interesting vegetarian choices on the menu, which I liked. I will definitely go back. The server said when they get their liquor license, they will be having live music. Loved the decor--good colors!

Me and the missus came here for a date night. It was terrific. The restaurant is spacious but not loud. The noise level was perfect. The food was delicious and it was not packed for a Friday night. Our server was terrific. The cornbread is delicious. I had the riblets to begin and then the meatloaf. Good lord, they were amazing! We will definitely return.

had the fried chicken, while
had the fried chicken, while waiting the server brought corn bread. Both the chicken and bread were very good. The chicken was crisp and tender and the corn bread light and moist. My partner had the meat loaf which was also very good, light with a tangy tomato based topping.

Creative Twists on Classics
Love their brunch menu which includes blue corn pancakes with house made chicken apple sausage patties. Delicious w/ unusual seasoning (fennel??) and just a slight "bite" of spicy-heat. With "endless mimosas" this is a great option for brunch. Easy parking to boot! Give 'em a visit & keep 'em in business!

Absolutely delicious food. Loved it! Will be back for sure! Red beans and rice, salad, fried chicken, everything was great!

It's New-Give it a try!
We tried Next Door after a 5pm performance at the Shotgun Theatre. It is a new restaurant with excellent possibilities. There were few customers but the staff was gracious and checked on our satisfaction level without being overbearing. The cuisine is Southern with an emphasis on collards, sweet potatoes and rutabagas, fried chicken skirt steak and pork chops. The prices are very reasonable as are the wine list prices, though the caliber could be improved.
If you want to relax after a theatre performance this is a place to head to.
