Great food and fun beach ambiance
We had the mahi tacos, which were incredibly fresh and home-made tortillas, the dressings were tangy, vibrant and colorful. Delish! We also had the special soft shell crab po'boy which I am still thinking about! Crispy and tender with a spicy dressing and a little edgy with the tiny sliver of pickle. yum! the bread pudding is to die for and only compares to commanders palace, we are still talking about it. service great and attentive, packed on a Tuesday.

delicious but pricey!
Was so excited to try this new restaurant in Manhattan Beach! Food was delicious but not cheap! ($200 for two people with an inexpensive bottle of wine). Had a sampler plater of oysters which were all good, miso black cod, tuna tartar, grilled octopus and the crabcake. Everything was very tasty, but small portions and I definitely was not full leaving. Good crowd, very tiny tiny place and pretty noisy. I would definitely go back though

Chef LeFevre did it again!!
I'm a big fan... Absolutely phenomenal food and atmosphere... A must try when you are in LA!!!
8/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Really good food, great beers, and good service. The only drawback....the too loud dance music is out of place.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
ABOVE AND BEYOND AMAZING!
What can I say?! Chef LeFevre has done it again! FWD is superb! Super fresh delicious seafood and amazing ambience... I wish I could dine there everyday!

This is a very small restaurant
This is a very small restaurant with great seafood. The server was attentive and we did not feel rushed even though there were a lot of people waiting to be seated. The food was creative and delicious. I wish they had opened in a larger space.

My new favorite restaurant!
Came here with some girlfriends for a much needed girl's night out. Food was awesome-we loved every dish we tried! Upscale and fancy without being too weird. Music was fantastic. Great 90's party music. We will definitely be back-if we can get a reservation!!
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Small and Mighty
The restaurant is tiny by restaurant standards. The tables are crowded together, and you can get pretty cozy with your neighbor. It is also noisy-- the music is very loud, and so any discussion you want to have with your table mate(s) will have to compete with noise in excess of the usual restaurant din. If you want a romantic dinner, this is not the place for you. However, if you want a fun and delicious dining experience, Fishing with Dynamite is perfect! The seafood selections were plenty, and everything we had, from lobster to oysters to hamachi, was fresh and perfectly prepared. Our meal was unbelievably delicious!

Fishing with music
Great little spot, cute decor and food really good, but they just need to turn the volume down a couple of clicks so you can hear the person across from you speaking. Service very good and helpful. Great wine list too.

East Coast meets West Coast!
Who would think one would travel 3,000 miles only to order a Maryland Blue Crab cake from the Chesapeke Bay and a Tomahawk Oyster from Long Island? Well, not only did we do that (and more!) but this meal was, by far, one of our best during our week stay in California.
I started out with the most perfect ice cold Mojito. Yumm.
Do not forget to order the Cape Cod Squash Rolls (Chet's moms recipe!), served hot in a cast iron skillet, the soft shelled crab Po Boy, the New England Clam 'Chowdah', and don't forget the Grilled Sword Squid (wow!).
As if that wasn't enough, we ended the meal with the warm Pretzel & Chocolate Bread Pudding with salted caramel sauce and house made ice cream. Whoa!
Perfect meal, perfect day!
Can't wait to come back!
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was fantastic. Everything we ordered was a standout dish. Great signature cocktails. The only drawback - VERY expensive.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love this spot!
Have been a handful of times now and the food and service are always excellent. Great ambiance.
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Freshest fish in Souhbay by far. Service was quick and well grained and knowledgeable. Excellent presentation and recipes
9/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delectable Raw Beige Clams
I thought I ordered steamed clams, but got raw beige ones which turned out to be delectable. The squash rolls were filling, the ahi tuna was flavorful. The waitress was pleasant and courteous.
The music was a bit loud for such a small dining space, however.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Have dined twice for dinner but think lunch might be the best; sunny weather, service, and atmosphere. Oysters are a must if you like them raw, the selection is diverse and it was great to taste the differences (we tried three). We ordered coffee after eating and our server brought them in a to-go cups; smart move for enjoying beautiful Manhattan Beach. The place just does everything right.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Scored OT reservations - ITS GREAT!
We scored Open Table reservations (which is a trick as you may have read), and finally went. Yes, it is small, intimate, etc. But definitely a great place in MB!
SS Minnow (4 oysters, 2 clams, 4 shrimp, 6 mussels, and 1/2 lobster) - Was all excellent, and great sauces to go with them.
Farro and Beet Salad - I normally don't like beets, but this was fantastic!!
Diver Scallops - Perfectly cooked and excellent!
Pretzel and Chocolate Bread Pudding - amazing!
We heard the wine prices were pretty high, and opted to bring a bottle from home. $15 for corkage, so that helped.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent assortment of fresh oysters from NZ, CAN, and the US and other notable fresh fish. They had live Uni from Santa Barbara which was delectable. Great little spot. Sancere by the glass. Great fries. The service was prompt and attentive. Really a great place.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderful eclectic menu
There are Asian and Mediterranean touches to many of the fresh fish dishes offered.
The place is way too crowded and noisy to be comfortable, but the staff is kind and helpful
to make up for that. The ethnic flavors are a hint artfully applied to dishes such as Thai-style
Coconut curry soup with shellfish, and Grilled sword squid in ponzu sauce. The small plates
are a bit pricey.

Food was spectacular, our server Casey I believe was even better. Had my angry that this just isn't a meat n potatoes restaurant you guys are dragging me to..this place is too "cheffy"..why can't I just get normal fish...arggh...get off my lawn type father as part of our four top. He complains about everything. I mean everything. But the other three knowledgable foodies in our group were blown away by every dish. It was my second time here but my other guests first, and everyone left full and happy. We ordered almost the entire menu, albeit I was the only one who ate the the urchin. Like sea butter. Hit of the night was hamachi and avocado. Best of all was service. She was awesome. Well done FWD. Next time in will leave my dad at home.
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food with beach views! I really enjoyed coming here. I heard great things about the restaurant from a friend and was not disappointed. So glad I ordered the mahi mahi tacos. They were the best I have had to date. After a big meal, I barely saved room for dessert. As soon as my mouth tasted the pretzel chocolate bread pudding, my stomach immediately made extra room. Restaurant is rather small and adds to the charm. I will definitely be back to try the other half of the menu I couldn't get to last time!
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
lunch business meeting
excellent location, food very tasty and original menu. Service was impressive - perfect recommendations. Highly recommend for a business lunch or dinner date. Excellent job by entire staff from the front door thru the meal.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, exceptionally loud!
I live in Manhattan Beach and have been eager to try FWD, but, had to wait until summer crowds died down. It is a very tiny place, not too many tables. The food was very good. I am not a big sushi fan so was a bit hesitant on the raw bar scallops, but they were absolutely delicious. Good oysters, as well. The pork belly was amazing. The whole snapper was incredible. The fries and rolls were also yummy. The crab cake was OK, but not outstanding. Same with the lobster. Good desserts. Overall, a nice experience. As mentioned, it is a tiny place but the noise level is anything but. It was difficult to carry on a conversation with the person next to me, and forget about the other side of the table, unless you shout.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very fresh seafood
Raw scallops and hamachi crudo were phenomenal! Very nice waitress and staff... Unpretentious yet really good quality food. Ordered the heirloom salad and key lime pie which were both really good also. Def will come back. Had reservations for a late lunch which was perfect to avoid the crowd.

The Best Food We've Had In LA
I'm going to cut to the chase: The food here is exquisite!
If you are an Oyster fan you can't go wrong.
But def. try the clam chowder, Hamachi, fish tacos and don't skip the Key Lime Pie for desert.
Your mouth will be very happy!
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Truly memorable meal
The late lunch hour of 2 pm was perfect for a quieter atmosphere. Oysters were a great starter, fresh & briny. The beet, farro salad was lightly dressed and balanced with creamy feta, pistachios, orange, beet chip & arugula. The super fresh & delicious ahi tartare is revived in this incarnation with Asian pear & flavors, including the crispy shrimp chip which we couldn't stop eating. The fish tacos are a revelation, each flavor coming forth separately. The Thai mussel & shrimp soup was the perfect finish, the spices balanced and light, with a nice heat coming up from behind. The wine list is varied and service attentive and informed. We can't wait to return!

Dining with Dynamite
Awesome oysters. Excellent wine. Knowledgable wait staff and conscientious enough to realize & turn the music down to a palpable level for dining.
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fabulous food, a little noisy, service excellent, small restaurant. Best fish I've had in a long time….highly recommend. Reservations difficult as they only reserve two of the tables in the restaurant, all others are for walk ins.
10/7/2013 5:00:00 PM
FWD is great!
FWD is like a charmng tiny beach shack with seriously delicious food. Our group of four tried the mussels, crab cakes, tuna tartare, heirloom tomato salad and fries. It's all small plates for sharing which gives it a fun vibe and the service is well-timed to keep you interested. But the critical thing is that the seafood is FRESH. I wish I could go again tonight!
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Finally, the South Bay gets the Seafood we deserve - and want! I can't say enough about the quality of seafood. By far the best littleneck clams on the half shell that I've had on the west coast. They obviously have a great procurement arrangement. And the clam chowder is truly outstanding -- it will be an award winner. And the service was impeccable. The restaurant is very popular and crowded, so we made a lunch reservation through open table. We had to wait 10-15 minutes and we didn't mind. But the staff was concerned so they made us a special appetizer -- so glad they did because those scallops on the half shell were divine -- and now we will always order them. Really great place and a new favorite of ours -- highly recommend!
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing fresh seafood
The service was outstanding and genuinely friendly - felt real, not the typical LA experience. The seafood was very fresh and carefully accented with accompanying flavors. The wine list by the glass was perfect for the cuisine. I will return again and again. I have been to Connie and Teds and love it, but I will likely come here more because it has the neighborhood gem vibe.
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Manhattan Beach Restaurant
This was my second time eating at Fishing with Dynamite and another superior dining experience. Love the clam chowder, the shrimp po boy, the beet salad. My only regret was that I was so full I didn't have room for the key lime pie.
10/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
I am from St. Louis and I read a review on-line. I come to LA often for business and every once in a while for fun. My wife and I were going to SLO for a wedding and made a reservation soon after our flight landed. Had an excellent lunch with a great variety. From the oysters to the tacos everything was great.
I went again this week when I was in LA for a couple business meetings. Even better this time because I was able to have a drink since I wasn't having to drive 4 hours after the meal!
I've already told my friends from all over the LA that they need to try going there.
10/15/2013 5:00:00 PM
can't say enough about FWD. the service was outstanding, the oysters were amazing, atmosphere cozy. if you are looking for a top-notch oyster bar - search no further. preferred the kiwi cup oysters over the others, raw scallops were great but definitely preferred the oysters, with the caveat that my husband and i would have been supremely happy just eating 50 oysters a piece with a good bottle of white which is what they had as well. would definitely recommend, and definitely go back.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
hype did not disapppoint
food was excellent, service mediocre, noise level not conducive for conversation.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
We celebrated my best friend's birthday, and the entire staff made it an amazing experience. Scarlett, our server, was so knowledgeble about the food, the chef came to visit and even allowed us to take a picture with him. The food was divine, grilled octopus with cranberrie beans will be a dish I will dream about until the next time that I visit. Thanks so much for exceeding our expectations and creating a wonderful memory.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Two thumbs up
Had a wonderful birthday dinner with a friend. Food great. Highlight were the oysters and grilled octopus. I will definitely have to return. Only down side is that they are SO small, can be rough to get a reservation.
10/20/2013 5:00:00 PM
Food was fresh, unique in preparation, lovely in preparation, and extremely tasty. Wine was a bit too pricey, and almost too noisy for conversation, but would return for a special occasion.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Been looking to get into Fishing with Dynamite for several months, being the sister restaurant of MB Post (also fantastic). FwD and Chef David LeFevre hit it out of the park once again. The oysters, black cod, sword squid and Thai Shellfish & Coconut Soup were all amazing.
The restaurant is very small and only a couple tables are reserved for reservations but 2pm-3pm on a Saturday seemed to be a good time to attempt a walk-in with minimal wait.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, loud atmosphere
The food, served in the tradition of tapas, was outstanding and creative. Fabulous sea bass, tuna tartar and the flavors were perfect. Decent wine list. Restaurant is too small, which promotes a very loud atmosphere. The place is hopping and very popular. Have a drink next door at MB Post before dinner, because there is no room to mingle at the bar in this restaurant. Too bad, because this place would fill three times it's size! Very, very good.
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best fish I've ever had!!
Unique fresh flavors, delicious fish, attentive and fun service, casual oyster bar atmosphere - absolutely fantastic meal. I need to make another reservation ASAP!
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
Good food, but a little cramped.
The fish was fresh and delicious and the clam chowder was yummy although a little brothy. The food is small bites so it is a bit more expensive than most for lunch. For innovation and freshness, it was great. It's a small place so expect it to be close quarters.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
An amazing follow up to MB Post. We've had reservations for nearly two months, so this dinner was highly anticipated and it didn't disappoint. Thai soup and squash rolls are an absolute must. I'm already booking another reservation asap.
11/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
Best Tuna I've ever had and the Seabass was amazing!
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Fit 4A Foodie!
After 3 mos, my reservation was here! Yay! The Owner's of MB Post knew we needed a small locally owned & operated venue that was dedicated to creating with fish and seafood. Enter: FWD! It's small and you're best bet is to walk-in. Get there early, this place is FULL by 7:30. But really, who cares? For a foodie it is worth the wait. Sat at the raw bar. Derek was mixing up great cocktails & pouring nice some nice vino. Derek & Chef chose 2 plates to meet my little gluten & cow's milk dairy problem: Divers scallops that were perfectly seared and steamed clams w/ cerise in a spicy tomato broth. Allergy girl truly wanted some bread to soak up all that broth! Don't forget 1/2 doz oysters paired with champagne!. Wow! Seriously, Wow.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Met with some friends coming in from out of town. Excellent seafood everything was so tasty! Seating is NYC style and a little cramped. I would definitely go back again and get a tower next time!
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great lunch spot/not just dinner
This was my best lunch experience in quite a while. It was a beautiful day and we rode bikes to Fishing with Dynamite for lunch. The waitress (charming girl from Michigan) gave excellent advice on wine and kept the food flowing at a great pace. The food was fantastic! I loved the ice tray with oysters, shrimp, mussels, clams, and lobster. The sauces for each were perfect. The crabcakes the best I've ever had. The place is small and quaint, but vibrant with energy.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
This was Excellent! We came here on a tuesday evening at 7:15 and waited about 5 minutes for a table because it wasn't quite ready yet. We occupied ourselves at the bar, looking over the great cocktail list and wine list. I settled on the "Rag Doll" cocktail - it was hand crafted with great flavor. I highly recommend! My date got a nice glass of Willamette Pinot and was very happy.
We were seated at our table and dove straight into the Raw bar menu. The oysters were great, the accompanying sauce was really nice. We had the mignonette and the cocktail sauce that was homemade it seemed.
We then had the scallop special, the tuna tartare, and the crab cake. I could have ordered everything on the menu and been very happy.
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
Seafood is dynamite!
Quality sea food paired with unlikely combinations of ingredients provided a unique, enjoyable tasting experience. Also liked the idea of 3 oz pours so that several wines on the short but eclectic list could be tried with the plates. Small and busy so reservations are necessary. Clearly a mecca for knowledgable locals and foodies (like ourselves) from outa town.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great food, casual vibe
The seafood is great. Excellent raw bar variety, great shrimp, good oyster selections, delicious crab cake. The experience left a lot to be desired though. What we liked was we feel like we could pull off a cheap lunch here if and when we go back, but given the menu, it tends to the pricier side and for that it doesn't mesh with the loud music and uncomfortable chairs. We recommend it for anyone craving the menu, but it's not a special experience like you might get at mb post, and maybe that's fine.
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
Four of us were celebrating a birth
day and decided to try the "hot, new place in town". The food was excellent but our server was outstanding. She gave us a rundown on each dish and how many it would serve. We ended up with five plates and that wonderful bread pudding. She was right on the mark on how much we needed to order. The biggest problem was the size of the restaurant which makes it very crowded. My sons who are 6'4' would never fit comfortably.
