This is a brand new restaurant; maybe one week old when I dined. Several of the staff had years of experience with Mr. Phan at his other restaurants including Slanted Door. Everybody that I encountered that worked there was polite, helpful, knowledgeable yet interested in feedback to improve. I enjoyed the evening thoroughly

It's a terrific space for
It's a terrific space for a restaurant, with all the glass windows. Nice list of cocktails, small but interesting wine list. The food was mixed: Great butterscotch-banana pudding and double chocolate layer cake, so-so chicken gumbo and sausage, rice and beans. Appies nice (grilled mustard greens with ham hock, actually listed as a side) and wedge salad. Nice waiter, but a little more thoughtfulness needed in clarifying what we were ordering, which resulted in a wrong dish coming out of the kitchen.

We went to South for a pre-performance meal looking forward to some New Orleans style cooking. We were in for a surprise - the menu was wonderful, full of gourmet takes on the Big Easy. We ordered a number of the small and larger plates to share, and each dish was delicious and had evidently been prepared with care. The wine list complemented the food perfectly. We will be back before either a Jazz performance, the ballet, or the symphony! The only concern about this place is that it is so small. I'm afraid we won't be able to get back in!

Loved the fact you can hear
Loved the fact you can hear (and see from some seats) the live music happening in the auditorium

South could be hot spot
We were here (7 people) for a birthday celebration that included a woman in a wheelchair and a four-year-old child. Special needs were addressed with much care. Food was wonderful and varied, though menu somewhat limited, and substitutions and adjustments were made. The server explained ingredients to the best of his knowledge. We brought a cake, which was served at no additional cost.
Only sketchy aspect was the order in which we were served: Drinks were a bit late, appetizer dishes were served to some but not to all who ordered them. We didn't check the wine list, nor did we dine at the bar; next time for sure. Music from stage piped in once concert began: a nice plus! Ambiance a bit sterile, but I suppose it is intentionally indy

A very nice pre-ballet dinner
A very nice pre-ballet dinner at South.
New restaurant, the wait staff was very energenic, but they are still getting it together as to where they need to be when, what the food and wines are like, etc.
Nice evening, we will be back soon.

The new SF Jazz Center is
The new SF Jazz Center is a beautiful facility and South is a perfect fit for the center. The menu of New Orleans standards coupled with specials, such as Jambalaya, was very good. The Boudin Balls are not for the faint of heart, but the field greens helped tame the heat. The wine list had some no-so-standard wines, but our server was able to describe and suggest wines to pair with our selections.
We dined early, so the restaurant was only just beginning to fill when we arrived, however, I suspect the noise level would increase dramatically when filled.

Nice addition to the neighborhood
We had the duck rillettes as a starter (hearty appetizer, quite good) followed by chicken gumbo, Louisiana-style shrimp, and mustard greens. The shrimp were nice and spicy. The gumbo was good, but had we realized it would not be served with much rice, we would have ordered a side of rice. The greens were fine. Interesting wine list: not the same old same old. The wine list is pricier than I expected given the food prices. Service was great, especially given that the wait staff faces the challenge of serving almost everyone who arrives between 5:30-6:00PM by 7:15PM since most of the early dinner patrons are going to the 7:30PM jazz concert.

When S. opend, it committd 2 an all-day rest. & esp 2 do earlyAM&dinnr So far dinnr only but it's a work in progress I think 2b successful, since it's part of SFJazz, it also needs 2 commit 2 being open 4 a reasonable amt of time after a show ends Waitperson said that they close at around 10:15 That's not good enuf&SFJazz mgmt needs 2b certain that however their contract reads, they stay open well beyond that else there will be disgruntld SFJazz patrons Ironically we went the night b4 Bauer's review of the restaurant in the Chron&Bauer hated it We both lovd it (fried oysters, sausage, fried chicken, succotash) Service was excellent (Bauer: terrible) Menu is limitd This is a small space w/a specific menu&wine list is more than sufficient

New Orleans inspiration with California ingredients and a light touch. The three of us who ate there tonight thought the food was terrific. Grilled corn salad had lots of flavor and was ample for three to share. Gumbo was a one-person main course portion that was good. The flounder was outstanding and unusual----the heat in the spice on the fish contrasted nicely with the green tomatoes, fennel, and the handful of fried chickpeas. One order is a big portion that easily serves two. Grits were perfectly prepared. The most interesting of all was the black-eyed pea succotash which had more of the grilled corn in it, this time with spicy grilled peppers. Cocktails were delicious. Service was excellent.

Jazz or Entertainment Center Dining
A new small restaurant with clean open feeling in SF Jazz Center has southern dishes with the fine art of Charles Fan leadership. Make your reservations early if you want to enjoy your meal before a performance. It would be a great place to dine after the performance crowd leaves for the theaters. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Menu was broad enough to satisfy a variety of tastes from fish to fowl to beef; including a variety of small plates and a main courses. Deserts was well done and nicely presented.

We weren't expecting much, but were surprised and delighted with our delicious dinner. One after the other, the dishes came packed with flavor. The stand-out for me and my friend was the corn and arugula salad. Fantastic!

The wine list is strange and needs to be extended. Cocktails are interesting and varied. Too much deep fried food on the menu. Could be a Neighborhood Gem.

Cool as in hip and brrrr: delis
This is the second time we've dined at South. The SF Jazz location is convenient and the food is excellent. We've liked everything we've eaten there. The service is quite good though occasionally spotty as is not uncommon in most places on a busy night. We had a sad miscommunication with our waiter resulting in our not getting to take home our leftovers; he did seem contrite. The place is attractive but definitely not warm, visually and physically - gray stone and glass abound. Cold leaning folks should bring an extra sweater. As an SF Jazz member and southern food lover, I will definitely patronize South again and recommend to my friends.

If the service can match the food, I will give it all 5s! Everyone was very nice but a little disorganized and so it did not feel very professionally managed.

Good Food...Inaccurate Menu
The food we had was very good however there were several items we were told the restaurant was "out of" when we attempted to order. Three beverages and two desserts. I believe the Jazz venue was closed and the food and beverage manager ordered sparingly.
6/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
tasty but small portions
This restaurant is in the same building as the SFJazz venue and as such offers a level of convenience that can't be beat. Because of sever traffic problems we were late and called to move back by 1/2 hour. When we arrived there was a table for 4 waiting for us. We were unsure we could be served in time to make the 7:30 concert. While it was tight, with the help of the excellent wait staff our dinner arrived in time and walked into the concert venue with a minute to spare.
The wine list had many different varietals I was unfamiliar with. The waiter was very helpful with recommendations and actually brought us samples of each of the wines we were contemplating to try before buying. The food was excellent, however the potions small.

Great spot especially before a show
Great food, small plates make sharing fun, service excellent, loved the fried oysters, the varied salads. Tried the short ribs this time. Wonderful. Highly recommend

Exciting food for exciting jazz...
The service gets a bit hectic as showtime approaches, but South is the perfect preconcert venue for dinner. The food is out of the ordinary; everything has an unusual element that works very well. I've enjoyed each dish that I have sampled here-the fish, the gumbo, and the shrimp with grits are all outstanding entrees. The salads are also well worth sampling and don't forget the Boudin balls-a great appetizer. Didn't really have time for dessert-next time!
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great before a show, however ...
SF Jazz is open during the shows, if you are not attending the performance you can sit, drink, enjoy the performance piped in,
great, great, great for the patrons.

Overall, we had a very pleasant dinner prior to SFJazz concert. South has a few kinks to work out. Servers were unsure to which table to deliver drinks and food -- interesting to watch, but there really need to work out a system.

Best kept secret in Hayes Valley
The staff understands good service and the food was delicious as always and very stylishly cool ambience.
I wish they served breakfast lunch brunch and dinner with dining alfresco.

Wonderful pre-show supper!
Had read some mixed reviews prior to my visit, but was saw no evidence of any of the negatives others had mentioned. Service was attentive and quick, our server was charming and knowledgeable (we were stunned to hear it was his first day!), cocktails were creative w/o being overdone, and the food was great! Can't beat the location if you are attending and event at the SFJazz Center.

Great before a jazz concert
The food is very good. It is not "fancy", but very good and reasonably priced. You go here because it is at SFJazz and you are going to the concert. Considering how many great restaurants there are in San Francisco, I can't imagine going here just for the food. It is a great pick for a pre-concert dinner.
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Better than expected
Reading the reviews, it's clear that it's been an uneven start for the restaurant. However, we went this past weekend at 8:15 after the performances had started, and everything was great. Service was excellent, and the food was very good. Drinks were good as well. It also wasn't very crowded at that time so I think the very small kitchen had time to focus on the food more than it would during the pre-performance rush.
Overall, I'd recommend it.

The best food we've had in a loooong time. Attention to presentation, good melding of many flavors in one dish, appropriate amount of food...not too much nor too little. Nice variety of choices on the menu. The entire meal was well planned for interaction of choices. Several dishes that we chose had a little spicy bite, something that we welcomed. They aren't afraid to add a little surprise, although nicely controlled. Good wine choices on the list, too. Good espresso, both caf and decaf. Can't say enough to praise this restaurant. Although small, it filled up by 6:30pm. We will definitely return, soon!

Emily was great
Asking for ordering advice was a smart thing to do. Emily suggested the fried oyster appetizer, shrimp and grits, and gumbo. She said it would be enough to share. It was and the food did not disappoint!

Not Outstanding but Very Enjoyable
Nice ambiance; the location before a concert can't be beat. The staff was helpful. The pre-show rush slows down the kitchen and service. Being aware of that (after reading other reviews), we requested the check when mains were served. Good decision.
You need to enjoy spicy food -- that is not a criticism of South, but rather a warning that many items have "heat." Rosemary Pull Bread was ok. Salads were standouts: Roasted Corn with Fennel, and the Wedge with Blue Cheese. 5 stars each. Sides were marginal. Mac and Cheese was sticky and overly spiced. Collard greens were good, but seemed to have been sitting for awhile. The Wild Flounder was overpowered by the spicy heat. Hanger Steak was spot on: tender, juicy, perfectly seasoned.

I love having this option for the Jazz Center. The drinks are amazing and the food is solid. I felt the chef relied a little too much on salt and pepper for flavor and have stopped going to Phan's Slanted Door for that very reason. Hope to see South continue to improve.

That was fast...
Dinner for two was good. We had the fried chicken, greens, beans/rice, and mashed potatoes with gravy. Service was excellent. Our food actually came before our drinks! We sat down, ordered, and the food arrived within five minutes! In all my years of dining that has never happened before. Overall, a nice quick spot for dinner prior to hearing great music upstairs. I highly recommend South. One minor point...the rosemary pull bread was a bit stiff and seemed like it was from the day before.

lots of shareable dishes
On my visit on October 20, there were hits and a miss: one of my fav starters is the cornmeal breaded fried oysters. There are 2 new dishes since the last time i was there - the Louisiana shrimp with creamy grits and the generous shrimp and oyster gumbo were both wonderful. Order a side of plain rice for the gumbo to soak up the smoky gumbo sauce. Gone was the Louisiana prawns, heads on, in a rich red sauce. I was looking forward to that dish but it was discontinued. perhaps customers complained that it was too messy to eat since the red sauce gets on your fingers when you peel off the shell.
The only miss was the smoked trout with chicory salad. The smoked trout was fine but everything else had a liberal dousing of salt.

Makes you want to slap your mama!
I booked the table because we were attending the show in the Miner Auditorium, but having been there, I'll come back even if I'm not going to a SF Jazz show. A real treat to have southern cooking done so very well. The fried chicken was very good (crispy, not greasy, very tasty), and my companion's oyster & shrimp gumbo was outstanding. We also had mashed potatoes and cheese grits on the side, both very good, very rich. Next time will have to try the shrimp and grits.
As a place to get a lovely meal before the SF Jazz show, I think this can't be beat - very nice food, very cool ambience. I'll be back!

This restaurant, in the new SF Jazz Center, is the perfect place to eat before a concert in the hall. The food is terrific and the staff knows that you need to be in the hall in time for the concert so timing works well. The noise level increases as the crowd swells at the bar before the concert, and there is a sense of a "rush" at the end, but all and all it is a great experience. It is probably quiet and much more slowly paced for breakfast and lunch.....

Excellent food, pleasant seating, lighting, not too noisy, etc., lovely, charming, waitress. HIghly recommended.

San Franciscanized southern food
We had a delicious dinner and attentive waiter. The only negative is the space itself is not that cozy.

The perfect pre-show dinner spot
If you are going to SFJazz, this is steps away from your show and the food is getting better all the time.
Good wine list, too.
We have loved every meal we've had.
Great, friendly service!

Convenient and Fun
Great grits, collards, oven fried chicken and red beans. We wanted a covenient place to eat near SF Jazz and lo and behold! There it is, located on-site. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. We would return.
