Surprisingly kid friendly
We don't normally take our almost 2 year old grandson to a restaurant like this, but the wait staff was so accommodating. The flatbread appetizer was amazing, and our entrees were delicious. We are eager to experience the full menu, which should be available soon. Tavern on the Coast is an exciting and welcome addition to Dana Point.

We really enjoyed the new
We really enjoyed the new addition to the neighborhood. TotC is beautiful inside with clean, natural stone and wood decor and snazzy music. We had the duck leg over polenta and the bibb lettuce salad with herb/shallot vinaigrette to start accompanied by house specialty brioche loaf served in a mini cast iron pan with sea salt and olive oil. The whispering angel rose was a lovely surprise. We had the ribeye and the filet mignon both well presented and cooked to a turn. (sous-vide) Great syrah, Good cabernet. The service timing kinks will no doubt get worked out over the next few weeks past opening week. All staff were gracious just not quite smooth yet.

Pretentious guests were the
Pretentious guests were the only drawback. The service and food were good. Pricey though.

Only open for a week we took
Only open for a week we took a chance at this new neighborhood restaurant and we walked away feeling we had a new friend to visit. Food quality was excellent, value priced and very good flavors.

We had a nice time
It was a Friday night and thank goodness we had a reservation , it was very busy. It was a little loud in the dining area, but everything else was wonderful. We were seated right away and the wait staff was great. The menu was a little limited, but we were told they are keeping it limited during the opening and will enlarge it as they perfect things.

Can't wait to return
Was I glad my friend told me about this new restaurant. My husband had the Poached Egg Frizee Salad with Toasted Brioche Croutons and the Salmon Entree. The Salmon was cooked perfect and we both enjoyed the salad. I had the Jidori Chicken, which was the best chicken I ever had. The skin was so crisp and every bite was moist and had alot of flavor. All the waiters around us did a great job on service. They are still developing their menu and we can't wait to go back to try new dishes; even though I would be tempted to get the chicken again.

Friday Night Find
It's a great cool upscale bar and restaurant to have a few drinks with a bite to eat on a Friday night

This has been the greatest addition to Dana Point's restaurant choices. We enjoy the food, the wine and the restaurant ambience and decor. Wine selection is awesome. Service is excellent and very professional and friendly at all levels. Very refreshing and enjoyable. We will go again and again!

Great addition to Orange County
Came for dinner last night, was fantastic! The restaurant has great ambiance and up beat vibe. Service was on point and friendly. Food was amazing, nice to have quality ingredients..real roasted beets- not the canned kind in a salad. Duck confit was a plesant surprising find and well executed. Salmon was great and perfectly cooked to temperature. Can't wait to return for more!

Great local find
Enjoyed dinner at the Tavern with my husband tonight. The rib eye was the best steak in Orange County. We also had the Roasted Jidory Chicken.. The quinoa was to die for! Having the Chef email me the recipe to try to duplicate at home. Service was friendly and attentive. Great wine list with lots of options- lots of value in many of the bottle offerings. Finished our meal with the dessert of the evening, chocolate cake. Just the right amount of chocolate to finish off the evening. Glad we live close for ma y repeat visits.

Thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. It is nice to find a place in South Orange County that is using a variety of high quality ingredients. Had the roasted forest mushrooms which were amazing- great that a chef utilizes more than a bland steamed "sautéed" button mushroom! The unique use of produce is refreshing, as is the hand made and cut pasta. You can taste the thought and care put into the dishes. The wine list has a wide variety and some great values. Highly recommend.

Had a great experience here. Dined with friends, the table shared the scallop special of the evening as an appetizer they were cooked perfectly! I ordered a vegetarian plate which the chef created for me to suit my dietary needs, it was very excellent. Others enjoyed chicken and the burger.. It has Brie and my friend said it was superb. Will be back.

Solid experience, needs improvement
Good food, not too inspiring but really well executed. The bernaise sauce was my favorite!! Server really only paid attention to his regulars giving him some of their wine. I was catching up with a friend so I wasn't fully paying attention but it was pretty obvious that this was the case. My glass of wine was forgotten until I reminded the server. Bussers tried to box our app while we were literally a third of the way through...I didn't get that. Service needs some improvement. The food was very good though.

The 1st two times we were in you would have recieved a 5 star rating for under the food catagory. Both times I had Jidori chicken. Excellent! My husband had 1st the salmon (excellent!). Second time he had the hamburger. He thought it could have been the best hamburger he has ever had. I think what made it special was the peppery crust of the hamburger patty. Last time it didn't have that crust. Was good, but not as before. I decided to be a little adventurous and ordered braised short ribs. They were very good, but still liked the chicken more. I didn't realize the spinach was wilted, which I don't care for. We noticed the menu had changed a bit. That's nice. Shows the chef is mutifaceted, creative and talented.

Had a terrific dinner here. Service was great, very attentive but not overbearing. The food was fantastic, great fresh ingredients. Makes such a difference. Loved the mushrooms and the chicken. Great wine list. It's about time this type of restaurant opened in Dana Point.
6/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
We enjoyed this new restaurant. The staff are eager to please and the food is good! It has a Tommy Bahama feel.

Great new spot in Dana Point
Really nice, relatively small new restaurant in Dana Point. Excellent service, they are really trying hard to please. Dinner with a group of six, on Sat. night and everyone enjoyed their meals. A few small glitches, they ran out of Coors Lite and the Tavern steak...at 6:45.The chicken and scallops were excellent. Everything is a la carte, so a bit pricey but not out of the ordinary for the nice ambiance and level of service. Good wine list, nice wines by the glass too. We'll be back soon!

Great New Restaurant !
Nice find! Great food! The decor is awesome. Nice outside seating. The service can be a little slow but worth the wait. The food is really good. Scottish Salmon always my favorite. Salads and the Chicken are really good also. Benn there several time since they opened and left very happy every time. Great job for a new place...keep up the good work!!

This was our first experience
This was our first experience at the Tavern. We live in Dana Point and are always on the lookout for a good spot! It's had mixed reviews and we were hesitant to try it out. We decided it was time to decide for ourselves. The name "Tavern on the Coast", is deceiving because it's priced way beyond a Tavern and it's near the coast but there is no view. It's price points are closer to a finer dining experience and for the two of us it was a $200 tab. We ordered salads, dinners, wine and dessert. We were pleasantly surprised with the fresh and organic choices. We chose entrees that were specials of the evening and would highly recommend listening to what the server suggests! Definitely try it out and you won't be disappointed!

Grateful Dana Point Resident!!
This was my third visit to the new Dana Point find. With each visit the waitstaff seems to have found their groove. I was delighted to see every table teaming with happy patrons.
Began with gazpacho followed by the scallops on toasted quinoa. Even made room to share the luscious bread pudding with carmel sauce. Great flavors and definitely worth the money!

Tavern on the Coast
Nice decor but smaller than expected. Not like a Tavern, but very noisy. Server over-attentive, asked us 5 times if ready to order while drinking a glass of wine. Food very good, and nicely presented. Wine very pricey. They seem to still be looking for their target audience.

Best New Restaurant !
Can't wait.to return.
Servuce was only average.... not great.
Had to ask for same items twice, but not the end of the world... as the fantastic food over came those items. The place is new so I can see where there will be improvement.

Really nice place. However, I was disappointed in the burger. Over-salted; bun got soggy. Flat bread was very good. I will go back, but skip the burger.
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was delicious but a little pricey. Tavern steak was $33 and only came with fries. Needed at least a small portion of vegetables. Flatbread was delicious. Menu could use a few more options.

Sunday Afternoon Dining
The service was excellent. The food was amazing. We had the Roasted Beet Salad, Herb Roasted Chicken & the "Special" Risotto. All of the food was over the top on flavor freshness. The salad was so different & filled with flavor. The chicken was so juicy, tender & popped with flavor. The risotto has to be the best & most flavorful we have ever tasted. Definitely going back. Oh and the beer was really cold.

Not as Good as Before
Once again, the place was packed. We declined the table by the bar. The server was excellent. The food was great (for some) and just okay (for others). I hope they make the scallops dish a regular item (instead of a special). The pasta special is 'hit-or-miss' - depending on the day. I loved the 'special birthday dessert'. The wine by the glass selections are very limited. The prices are on par with the Ritz-Carlton restaurants (just down the street). One thing, if you're driving southbound on PCH - it's really difficult to get to. And, parking is limited - since the place is packed. But, there's street parking nearby.

Will definitely go back!
We just recently moved to the area and have been trying out some new places. Tavern on the Coast is quite a find. We had friends come join us from where we used to live which is about an hour north. We all loved it! Our server Eric was outstanding along with all of the support staff! We really enjoyed the marinated olives, fresh salads, mushroom soup, flat iron steak, short ribs, and chicken. The dark chocolate mousse is wonderful too. Would highly recommend this restaurant and plan to go back in the near future. We plan to invite more of our friends from our old town to enjoy such a great experience.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved the ambiance!!!! Very cool. Waiter and service was awesome. Presentation great, food delicious but 4 out of 5 of us did find everything from the yummy bread, salad and entree too salty. Possibly too much sea salt going on? Will be back but will definitely request to cut back on the salt on my order. Might also think about cutting back a little on the prices too. A tad pricey but not a deal breaker.

How's the food
Everything is fresh and cooked and seasoned perfectly. Compliments to the Chef!

One of the best dinners I have had in a long time. Great Ambience/Great Service and the food was Amazing.

We enjoyed everything we ordered;
We enjoyed everything we ordered; it was all very fresh & well-made. Our only problem was our salad; we asked for the dressing to be served "on the side", as we always do. We did receive dressing on the side, but our salad was also dressed!
10/12/2013 5:00:00 PM
The food was really, really good and the ambiance very nice. The 3 of us enjoyed everything and plan on returning to try other things on the menu. The service was EXCEPTIONAL!

Finally a great walk-to
I live just two blocks away and I have been patiently waiting for a great walk-to restaurant for years. I think we found it. "Tavern" opened in April and initially their wine and entree specials prices were a bit much. On Saturday I took some friends for dinner and everything fit. The service from Brian and Darren exceeded our expectations and every meal and wine choice was an excellent value for an upscale restaurant.
Looking forward to their new lunch schedule in December!

Great experience. Service was really good. Food was good too. Will be back.

22nd anniversary. Decided to gamble on an expensive place without knowing much about it. (Read reviews. This is my first written, btw! This good-next: Chart House bad!)
Pleasantly surprised! Given a nice table and an option to move outside if we wanted. (Stayed indoors because we didn't want to listen to traffic!) Didn't really know what some of the menu items were but out server explained. Food was excellent! When the manager noticed my wife was not going to eat the beans that was part of her entrée, he exchanged that part for a delicious salad she enjoyed! (Nice!) Thanks! To top it off, a dessert we did not order arrived with a "Happy 22nd Anniversary" note on the plate written in chocolate! (VERY NICE!)
Bottom line: GO FOR IT!
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Would like to see a few more standard entrée items included. For the price, I think potatoes & vegetable should be included. Really, how much do those items actually cost the merchant to buy, prepare & serve. Who wants to pay $28 for meatloaf? Surprised that a well drink, vodka up with a twist, was $11. That's per person. Overall, we liked the décor, food & attentiveness paid by the waiter. Had to pour own wine since he was busy with a party in the private room most of the night. Location is nice for us since we live just up the street, but wouldn't go all the time due to prices. There's plenty of places to eat in the area that offer good happy hour pricing for food & drinks.

The restaurant went out of
The restaurant went out of their way to acknowledge my friend's 80th birthday. We had a lovely time.

When our regular favorites didn’t have a table for us at our preferred time, we decided to try this Dana Point eatery which recently opened. We were pleasantly surprised! This is a first-class operation. Friendly welcome, comfortable environment, good service, and really outstanding cuisine. The special dessert was a plate of beignets with a tasty caramel sauce. Super! We’ll be going back. Our only negative experience was a noisy bar area during the happy hour, but once the bar patrons departed, everything was good.

We were spoiled by our attentive waiter at this beautifully designed restaurant. My Chilean Sea Bass was so fresh it wiggled and melted like butter in my mouth. The gourmet sides were unique and flavorful and the wine was delicious. It was nice to be able to sit outside on a cold winter evening in a romantic setting next to the fireplace and still feel cozy and warm with the very efficient heat lamps. The waiter was able to turn down my husband's heat lamp and turn mine up so we both were comfortable. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
