Basically, a steakhouse with an Italian flare. Quite expensive. One drink, one bottle of wine among four, no dessert, and a tab ov $160pp.

Come for the steak (the juiciest and most tender I've ever had) and make sure you make room to start with some great seafood crudo.

The ribeye is hands down the best anywhere. The rest is excellent as well - oysters, potatoes in all ways, and I love the artichoke. The service is great and the restaurant is beautiful.

Top Notch Pasta!
We dined at Costata this past Sunday evening. In this city, it is a pleasure to be able to make a last-minute reservation at a restaurant that is so excellent; with my husband's work schedule, by the time we get around to figuring out we CAN go out, other restaurants are generally "fully committed" (a highly galling phrase). This was our second meal at Costata and neither the food nor the service disappoints. Firstly, their oil-soaked focaccia bread is divine. This time we ate only from the homemade pasta menu. We had the garganelli with a truffle cream (divine, not overly heavy); the rigatoni (excellent red sauce and meatballs); the cavatelli in a brown sauce (my favorite--rich and decadent); and ricotta agnolotti. You can't go wrong!

Thank you Michael White!
The food, wine, service, and decor were all as exceptional as I expect from a Michael White joint. The only advice I can give: don't abandon the pasta! We only got one appetizer portion to split (along with the panzanella and bone marrow salad: A++), and I was a touch sad for the rest of the meal that I wouldn't get any more pasta than those few perfect bites. Don't get me wrong--I LOVED the costata and sides we ordered (creamed spinach and crispy red bliss potatoes--both incredible, especially the scrumptiously lemony potatoes), but DAMN that pasta is good! I would recommend getting (if you're a group of two) maybe one appetizer or crudo to split, two pasta appetizers, and the costata or another steak. Can't wait to go back!

A excellent restaurant - loved it
This place is fantastic - that perfect mix of a low buzz, upscale interior, intimate but with elbow room. Our server, Kia was excellent! To start - the focaccia with some salty buttery something to slather on was heavenly. The quail appetizer was really good - but not super special - but my scallop crudo with crispy pickled celery bits and truffle was amazing. The highlight of our night - and truthfully the 2nd best pasta we have ever had - was the CAVATELLI - di semola, braised oxtail, fontina. The only reason I didn't give Costata 5 stars is that the steak (the bone in NY Strip) was just ok. The cut was great and it was cooked perfectly but it was too plain and homogenized. Nothing eye popping. We would definitely go back. Great place.

Very good steak house. I would prefer a option for a more reasonable portion size of steak. At these prices, unnessessary to charge extra for sauce.

The food was on point! Especially the Costata for two. Excellent service, food, and atmosphere! I recommend.

Michael White has topped himself with this new Italian steakhouse. The food is impeccably prepared. Try the steak tartar, razor clams, and lobster cocktail to start. The pastas - especially the cavatelli - are amazing and can be ordered as a side dish with your steak. Do not miss the premium wine by the glass menu. It is pricey, but it is rare to be able to order such amazing wines by the glass.

Great Dining Experience at Costata
I mean let's be honest here, this place is a premiere steakhouse that also serves pasta. We made reservations and were treated to a spectacular meal. Started off with an array of things including the Mare, the steak tartare, oysters, and lobster cocktail. Everything was excellent although I have to say that the Mare and the steak tartare were the best I have experienced so far. We ordered the Tomahawk steak for 2 medium rare, a filet mignon, a pasta dish, and some polenta and mashed potatoes. Again everything was excellent but the tomahawk steak was really just out of this world. Dessert was also very delicious. This is definitely a special occasion type of restaurant and we would like to return at some point to celebrate something.

Happy to have gone!
We are so glad we tried this one for ourselves. The staff could not of been better they were well informed and friendly but not too much, just the right mix. The food first and foremost was outstanding, we had steak, chicken, pasta all done to perfection.
If you know anything about food this one is for you! Perfection!

Wonderful food, services & ambiance
Leave plenty of time to savor all that Costata has to offer and bring friends so that you can share. The crudo appetizers are beautifully presented and the dressings don't overpower the fish. The salads are delicious and the pasta rich and creamy. The NY boneless Strip Steak was more tender flavorful than any other steak we ever had. With sides of Crispy Red Bliss potatoes and Artichokes, we were reaching our limit. But we couldn't pass up dessert. They were beautiful and not too sweet.
We look forward to our next visit. The service is excellent and the ambiance comfortable. We highly recommend it.

The best steak in New York. Wonderful food and the entire staff - servers, waiters, sommelier, and hostesses are exceptionally nice. Have eaten both in the upstairs and downstairs room, both are great.

Steak to crave
We loved the costata (ribeye) for one which my wife and I shared because we also ordered at loved so much of the other excellent food. My wife thinks this is her favorite steak. The rosemary flavoring makes it perfect. The mushrooms are great as is the creamed spinach. It is much less "cream"y than other typical steakhouses' creamed spinach so you actually feel as if you are indulging AND eating something green. The pastas are of course excellent. For me the Garganelli was the clear winner but my wife says the seafood-based black pasta trumped it. We also had the best heirloom tomato salad (with burata) I've had in NYC this year. The cocktails are excellent and creative and they have a lot of good bourbons!

Went here recently for dinner on a weekend in NYC. Overall, the restaurant was great. The food was all impressive (especially the lobster and guanciale starter) Only issue with the food was the steak. The waitress convinced us to stray from the type of style I like my steak (medium pittsburgh style) and that was a big mistake. She also did not recommend sauces, which would have helped the steak shine. We went for the NY Strip. It was good, but nothing special.
The sommelier was spectacular. He was knowledgable on the wines, and included a complimentary digestif tasting table side. He also came outside at the end of the meal to personally say goodbye. Nice touch!

Steak Lovers Take Note
Costada delivers--Interesting menu; delicious aged steak; great ambiance; good starters; not the usual steak restaurant
noise. Not sure if this was due to the upcoming holiday weekend. Loved the lardo served with foccacia when we sat down; however, the truffle and puttanesca butters did not deliver. Both were tasteless. The steak was fine without them; although when I go back, I might tryr some of the sauces. The portions were large (the New York steak for one easily serves two).
I woud especially recommend this for business entertaining and boy's nights out.

5 Stars for Soho
A full fledged dining experience from the moment you enter the door.
Fabulous wine , extraordinary steak, presented by an amazingly knowledgable staff.

Excellent food, what's better than raw shellfish, jazzed up sashimi, great pasta finished off with great red meat! Waitress needs to know specifics of the raw fish and be able to explain to customers - i had to ask multiple q's abt some of the raw fish dishes b/f i felt like i understood - like pulling teeth to get info. Scene is a bit cold - i'd warm up the decor a bit.

I found the steak delicious and well cooked.

Michael White does it again
Michaels restaurants are a dining experience. Extremely well prepared food made from the freshest of ingredients. The flavors are well balanced, not overpowering. In my opinion, his pastas are the best in New York City.

Fantastic pasta and service
The pasta was beyond good and the service was great. All the recommendations made by the staff were spot-on.

tasty deliciousness downtown
the flickering electric candles were ridiculous - we turned ours off and eventually a busboy took it away without comment, so i'm guessing other people had the same reaction. otherwise, delicious. costata steak for 2 was fantastic - we had it with hen of the woods mushrooms, which was really pleasantly additive. next time, the pastas!

Fantastic food; excellent service!
I'm a huge fan of Michael White's restaurants, and Costata absolutely did not disappoint. The food, of course, was wonderful (do NOT miss the 'Costata' steak, which is a Tomahawk Ribeye) and the portions were absolutely enormous (scallop crudo = a full plate of scallops topped with black truffle?!?!) The wine list was also terrific; two of the four in our party weren't drinking wine, so we had to stick to half bottles, and they had some fantastic half bottles. But there are lots of great steakhouses in town. For me, the best part of the meal was the service - absolutely impeccable, but so friendly that I'd call it 'warm.' For me, this was a home run. I'll definitely be back - as soon as I lose the 5 pounds I gained last night!
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
The polenta was the best I've ever had. Ribeye had great flavor. Service was perfect. I wanted to go back again the next night and have the same dinner.

Eponymous Costata Unrivaled
I visited this restaurant for one reason only: to see whether the costata would live up to the hype - especially with the recent Time Out New York nod to it as one of the top 100 dishes in NY. Well, it exceeded all expectations, and is the singularly most spectacular piece of meat I've ever had. It is unrivaled in NYC steak dining, and I can't wait to return.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
No self control
I probably should have studied the prices prior to reserving the table. There was no way around spending what we did. The food was exquisite, beautiful, and super yummy. We had to try some of everything from the oysters and razor clam appetizer to the beef and lamb entrees. Everything cooked to perfection. Desserts? Why not? Gelato Alla Meringa was my favorite although the Crostatina was a big hit too.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was great - steak was
Food was great - steak was awesome and the pastas were awesome as well. We ordered all but 2 pastas on the menu (instead of getting potatoes or some other sides). I liked the carbonara, oxtail ragu and the rigatoni but they were all good. Wines were good, cocktails as well. So was the crudo before. The only thing bad was the service. They forgot our cocktails and brought out the crudo before we even got our cocktails. Its probably a one off thing. Otherwise, it was one of the best restaurants ive been to in awhile.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Have been to Costata several times and it never fails to amaze... Every dish is absolutely fantastic, specifically the Bone Marrow Panzanella, Beef Tartare, all of the Crudo, the Costata steak.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Awesome ribeye. Great rigatoni. Excellent bourbon selection

Happy Birthday at Costata
The food was magnificent! Perfect Steak, Perfect Pasta. Never are the two so fantastic under the same roof.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
My 2nd time at Costata and enjoyed it just as much as the 1st time. Food was excellent and the service was superb.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
I continue to be wowed by Costata's food and service. Even the caesar salad is excellent. I crave the steak and the rigatoni pasta (with mortadella meatballs) is my current favorite pasta in the city right now. Well done.

A+ steak house
We visited this new steak house because of the rating for the wine list. It did not disappoint, and the food was better than expected. The wait staff encouraged to share a variety of the house made pastas and the sharing size cuts of meats. Each dish was amazing. We will certainly return.
10/15/2013 12:00:00 AM

crudo and the costata are amazing, and the wine list is outstanding too.

Food was amazing, both pasta and steak! Can't wait to go back on our next visit to NYC.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great steaks but expensive alcohol.
All three of their signature steaks are great. Pastas are comparable to any that you might have in Italy. Service was very attentive. Although I enjoyed the background music ( classic rock) it seemed a little too hip for the ambience. As a steak lover I would put it in the top 10 for NYC.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
With so many choices in NYC, it was great to have picked Costata. I will surely recommend it.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice mix of healthy and horrible for you. Everything well prepared. Nice wine list but pricey. All good.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is phenomenal and the menu has many choices, from full meals to appetizer portions of pasta. So you can have a light meal or a full meal. The service was incredibly attentive and the staff was extremely friendly. The wine list was huge with wonderful choices of mostly Italian wines. Would recommend to anyone who Is looking for extremely high quality food!

GO. Just go!
Had a tremendous meal! From the moment you walk in the door, you're greeted by a very welcoming hostess. Our server made great recommendations and our wine was paired perfectly for our dishes. I'll definitely be coming back and have told my friends it's worth the trip.

Sensational in Soho
This restaurant was selected by someone who lives in the city and loves to try new places that are a buzz. Of course, he loves his food and wine. Our palettes were pleased and the wine selection was excellent. We went from 4 guests to 5 and Costata staff was very accommodating.
