Never had anything bad here, and service is always great.
Best biscuits in Portland!

The Whole Hog
Had been meaning to come here for years. Always seems to be in the top 10 of Portland area restaurants, but we've just never made the trip out to Montavilla before. Wish we had earlier as we've certainly been missing out. Went for a Sunday dinner with a party of six. The menu was enticing and everyone wanted to try everything. I ultimately went with The Whole Hog (as you should too) and was blown away. A brined loin chop, crispy pork belly and succulent braised pork shoulder with prunes over a bed of amazing grits and greens!! I'm drooling as I write this. The other fan favorite was the Mussels, Clams, & Egg Noodles tossed with Meyer lemon, peas, & mint. Not a morsel was left on their plates. All in all I could eat here every week.

The food and service was wonderful,
The food and service was wonderful, but I requested a window booth and ended up right by the front door at a small table in the most exposed spot possible. Almost impossible to have a conversation.

The food was AMAZING !!!
The food was AMAZING !!! My husband enjoyed the whole hog and he could not give it enough praises. We were blown away by how great the food was. I enjoyed the fried chicken which was moist and tasted wonderful. We will be back !!! The service OUTSTANDING. We sat in Keri's section and she was so good at explaining all the food and making her personal recommendations. She was on top of it all and checked back with us often. The entire experience was OUTSTANDING.

Keep it up
We had a beyond expectations experience, food, service and OpenTable's reservation system. This is what dining should be all about.

Farm to Table
My party of 4 showed up an hour earlier than our reservation on Mother's Day. Even though the restaurant was full, the host was able to work some magic and got us seated within 10 minutes. The clams, sausage & deliciously crispy potato chunk appetizer was devoured in minutes. The fried chicken, vegetable pot pie, duck, and lamb entrees were savored & shared. The rhubarb crumble was fought over. The farm fresh ingredients & delicious flavors were a hit with our out of town guests. Prompt & courteous service for food & beverages throughout the whole meal. Fantastic!

My party and I had a wonderful experience at the Country Cat. Our server, Hana, was great! Our food were very flavorful. Mmmmm!!!

Country Cat Dinnerhouse
My husband and I really love this place. We're on a very limited budget right now so, while we'd love to go more often, we've only gone 3 times over two years. But, each time it has been wonderful. We brought some "picky eater" friends with us the other night and they both loved their braised beef entrees. A happy hour menu would be a great addition!

Breakfast and a show!
Perched atop our stools at the chef's counter we were front row to view the organized chaos by the kitchen staff. After she finished coloring her Country Cat, our 7-year-old was delighted to see her kid cakes being prepared right in front of her. Worchestshire gravy on the chicken fried steak is quite out of this world and the kid even helped mommy finish it off. I enjoyed the WT bisquits and gravy all mixxed together to my liking. Bisquits were pefectly light and fluffy.

i feel like you really can't go wrong at this restaurant. it is easy to make a reservation via opentable. when we arrived, we were greeted with a smile and whisked to our table. sadly, our server was a disappointment. perhaps she had too many tables in her section, but she didn't reflect the friendliness of the person on the phone OR the person who greeted us. [possibly the same gentleman.] she was a bummer! other than her, the food was great! the red wine braised beef was exceptional! the kids had fried chicken and mashed potatoes for $5! and the desserts were heaven!!!! the pudding trio was tasty, diverse, and gone in 60 seconds. the lemon chiffon with saltine crust, chantilly cream and strawberries was perfection! YUM-OH!!!
6/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was superb; very fresh and flavorful. The duck was out of this world according to my friends. The snapper was delicious as well. All 3 guys had the the steak and raved about it's flavor. Desert hit the spot. We especially loved the rhubarb crisp; so fresh. Service was outstanding, with time to rest between flavors, but very attentive to our needs. I would highly recommend the Country Cat to others. Loved it!

Been a regular for a few years and have always enjoyed the food and the servers.
6/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Love this place!
The food and service are always outstanding, great crew. Make a res on weekends or you'll be waiting a very long time. Noise level on weekends is very loud so if you want quiet, go during the week. On my first visit, the crew served us and then let us alone. Three hours later we were still visiting and the place was closed, but the crew let us enjoy our time without rushing us out. Highly recommend the food. Thank you crew!

I was warned!
Told this was a good restaurant, but the neighborhood sure didn't inspire confidence.... I was wrong! Despite the fact that there were more tattoos on one place than I have seen in quite awhile and the casualness of the surroundings, EVERYTHING that came out of that kitchen was great! We were there for the Portland June dining month menu, but several people ordered off that menu and we all loved it. My husband got the "whole hog" & was in love with it although he could have split it with another (big dang pig)... I can't wait to come back & neither can my companions....
6/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
tasty fried chicken
The fried chicken was great but the whole hog was even better. The drink list was larger than expected. Best of all, we had excellent service. We'll definitely be back!

We had my inlaws 70 and 73 B-Day celebration at the County Cat. The service and the food was excellent!

Food was fantastic-especially
Food was fantastic-especially the BBQ Duck leg! The atmosphere was comfortable. Wine list short and most bottles were 3X normal prices which may be the trend now as we don't dine out as much as we used to. All in all a good dining experience and we would go back.

mom's 78 th birthday dinner
Great food , never thought I would make comments like "the grits are really good' and "OMG try the collard greens" ! Superb, already have recommended to many , while busy ( friday night 6pm) the waitress was knowledgeable, on point , professional and alert ! Food was overall (and our group of 9 sampled each plate was very good 1 I would have a hard time if someone was too ask a recommendation of singling any one item ! Now in my top 2 places to eat in the area !
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always fabulous - service, food, atmosphere... the food is absolutely amazing (not pretentious or over priced - just great food, good portions, good price). I highly recommend the Country Cat, but suggest you try not to eat all of your main course so you can save room for dessert (AMAZING)!
7/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
We celebrated my birthday at the Country Cat, and the staff was kind and generous allowing the extra time needed for our group of 9 to gather and order. Our waitress was perfect with her suggestions as we decided to serve the food family style. It was the first time at the Country Cat for most of my family and they are still talking about how EVERYTHING was so good!

My hubby and I went there
My hubby and I went there w our two little kids. Everything was delicious! Kids' menu items came in large yummy portions. Even their ice box dessert was so good. Wish I can go back soon again.

Excellent, unusual dishes
We have yet to have a mediocre dish at Country Cat. The combinations of flavors are outstanding and unusual. The menu changes with the seasons. Seafood and meat dishes are featured, so there are only a few choices for vegetarians, but those are tasty. The chef cures his own bacon - delicious. The ravioli with peas, mint, toasted hazelnuts, and browned crab butter and the albacore tuna with salt cod fritters are both beautifully balanced and unusual. We especially enjoy the trio of custards/puddings for dessert. They are light in texture and of high quality ingredients. The wine list is not large, but well-chosen, and the service is attentive and friendly. Conversation can be challenging when it is crowded, as the noise level is high.

We had a reservation for 10
We had a reservation for 10 and the table was ready when we arrived. They were busy but we did not feel like we were being forgotten about. Brunch was the course of the day and we all loved our food. However it did take awhile to decide what we were getting because the menu had an array of attractive items. I myself had the chicken friend steak. Lets just say the gravy is to die for. We all indicated that we would come back again. Oh I almost forgot about the drinks. They only reason to do brunch. They menu housed alot of the house drinks which we tried them all. I was stuck on the Bloody Mary. Not sure if it was because of the drink or the jerky that came in it.
We went on a Sunday around 11am

Yet another outstanding meal!
Friends invited us to dinner earlier in the day and we wanted to bike there. Country Cst was the first idea, so we checked for availabilities. If worked out perfect! The food was delightful as always. Between the 4 of us, 2 of us could be high maintence. One gluten free and one vegetarian. We all left there stuffed. The fried chicken was amazing and do was the trout with cucumber salad. Oh! How could I forget the devilex eggs? Delish.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food great, service mediocre
We have been here several times and always had a great overall experience. This time the food was great as always but the server was disengaged. So much so that we had to go to the bar with our empty water bottle and ask for it to be refilled.
We'll go back but it might not be for a while.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fantastic fried chicken
I went for the fried chicken and was not disappointed - it was crispy, flavorful, and moist. The pecan spoon bread that accompanied it was tasty but a little too heavy, though.

Never have we left feeling disappointed with our meal, no matter what we ordered.

Always can expect the best
Been going to County Cat for five + years. Always a treat and we always come away saying we will always go back...Service great, food excellent, ambience fun...Nice to know that consistency still is important....

one of our favorites
We started going to the Country Cat when it first opened. It's more of a special occasion place for us now, but we were going there 3-4 times a month for awhile, and we've introduced most of our friends as well. I'm so glad it's become such a PDX hotspot. Our party of 6 arrived together, and we were promptly seated. The service was amazing, as always. Drink orders were taken and delivered quickly as were entree orders, but we never felt rushed. An ever-changing, always imaginative menu, along with reliable old favorites is the best thing about the Country Cat; this visit was no exception. Wonderful food, with combinations one would think shouldn't work, but do. I was sorry not to be able to have the trio of puddings..it's my favorite.

First time experience
Food was great, friendly staff. Parking can be tough, but worth the visit!
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very noisy but good food
Enjoyed the choice of brunch faire. Sat next to a window. Good for the energetic but the atmosphere was not conductive to seniors because of the noise volume. Had been here before for party of nine for dinner. Service was spotty on that occasion but again the food was good.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
After seeing this restaurant featured on the Food Network, we couldn't wait to taste the fried chicken. We were definitely not let down, and at every morsel. The onion rings and home made katsup were outstanding, too! I recommend this to anyone!
9/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food but
We got there right at opening and were seated fast. Ordered our food and waited a long time to get it. While waiting we asked our waitress for a straw. She forgot and someone from our party had to go up to the bar to get one.
Everytime I looked around, our waitress was just standing around. We were in a bit of a time crunch so maybe it was not the place to try that night.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was absolutely great!! We had the pork plate. Perfectly prepared, though the waitress wasn't open to switching the vegetable, so my meal came without one. Everything else was an overall good time.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was a celebration for my wife birthday with our family. The table was crowded for 5 people and a toddler.
9/21/2013 5:00:00 PM
Not What You Expect
The fried chicken cooked in beef mallow was great. The skin was crispy like any good fried chicken, but the flavor brought out from the mallow took it well over the top. The handmade burgers were cooked to order, huge and tasty. It was served with a huge bed of shoestring style onion rings. I had the whole hog, a combination of different parts of the pig on a bed of grits with a side of buttery kale. The headcheese was delicious, and the bacon smoky a strong. The pudding plate was fun, a very scotchy butterscotch, bittersweet chocolate and creme brulee. The Apple Pandowty was impressive in appearance and flavor. The meal was ar from cheap, but it was amazing flavor and well worth a visit.

This place is consistently amazing and completely deserving of all the praise it receives. We've been there many times and will continue to visit frequently :)

Still amazing after all these years
I have enjoyed coming to this neighborhood gem since it opened, and am always thrilled to find that it is still as amazing as when it opened. The food continues to knock it out of the park, the service is skilled and sassy and the drinks are 5 star. I always take out of towners here for a deep dive into the local food scene and it always leaves them wanting more. Rock on!

Country Cat Rules!
This was my 3rd visit to CC and it never lets me down! Delicious food, drinks and service!!
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
First time visit and we came with friends. Excellent waitress, wonderful food, but too noisy to talk across the table. (Why is there background music when the restaurant is full and noisy?) The steelhead was superb with roasted vegetables, a hamburger with really good flavor, great chicken and delicious pear salad. All desserts were good, too.

Friday Night in Montavilla
Saw the coverage on the Food Network and was intrigued. The place was crowded and am glad we had a reservation. The service was congenial and enthusiastic. Dinners were braised beef (pot roast), a hamburger and lamb shoulder. The braises were flavorful, the portions were more than ample, and the side of whole carrots in a butter/brown sugar tasty without excessive sweetness. The burger patty was a little on the skimpy side and a touch dry. The other couple ordered biscuits, which were large, and looked heavy, but were light and flavorful. I would go there just for the biscuits!
Next time we try the brunch.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first time to
This was our first time to Country Cat and we were not disappointed. Fried chicken was everything I had heard it was - crispy & crunchy outside but moist and delicious inside. Beef braise was tender and flavorful. Our waitress was wonderful, attentive but not hovering. We spent 2-1/2 hours with our meal too! We will definitely be going back.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a great time at the country cat. Staff was friendly and attentive. Food was fantastic. They got us in right at our reservation time. I do not recommend getting there to early, there is really no place to wait for your table.

Spectacular eats and drinks!
What a fabulous and fun meal! We were initially taken by our wonderful waitress! She did an exceptional job with recommendations and suggestions for us "first timers." She was warm and very pleasant. She handled our friendly banter and dealt some back in return. This set the tone for a wonderful evening. At our table we had some cocktails and starters (onion rings and honey mustard wings), followed by the whole hog, the rib eye special and the chanterelle ravioli with a side of cauliflower potato gratin... ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Every dish was just stunning. It was a culinary delight! It's nice when such outstanding small restaurants take reservations! We were glad we got in on a Friday night. WE WILL GO BACK!
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
What was that mystery ingredient?
I and my fellow diners played the game "what was that mystery ingredient?" throughout dinner. Things were that good and that unusual and even when the waitress told us "aoili" we said no that wasn't it, must have been some other mystery ingredient.
Unpredictable food in a predictable world - I like that. Had braised ribs, others had the trout and the duck. All were very happy.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved the menu choices and really enjoyed the experience. It is a place to enjoy good food and visit over timely served courses. Make reservations and be prompt as it is a busy spot.

Out of Towners
I had Sales here from Kansas City & some locals who had not been to the Country Cat. (I had been once)
We had a great dinner, all meals were really tasty. We dined early so the noise level was low, but as the restaurant
filled it was more lively, we could still carry on our conversation. Fried Chicken was a hit, as well as the Trout.
Apple Pandowdy was swooned over... Highly recommend this place. Thanks for a nice evening.
