We went on a Friday night.
We went on a Friday night. It wasn't too crowded at 7, but it got pretty busy closer to 8. I enjoyed the piano player. My fiance had the Whaler's platter and I had the steak and kidney pie. I wasn't as impressed withe the pie, the pastry was too stiff, and the side of peas looked really sad. I don't like peas so I passed those along and sampled some of his calamari. The batter was great on it.
It took a couple tries to get water from the waitstaff which was annoying, as was the amount of time my chair was bumped by the waitstaff. I would not be seated in the same spot again. The restaurant is oddly shaped and hard to maneuver in and they weren't having much luck serving us without jostling my chair.

Great historical restaurant and bar
Love this little "British Pub" - historical and beautiful atmosphere, authenic and tasty English menu, great selection of adult beverages. They routinely have music acts that are always fun, sometimes loud. I recommend checking their website for events as it does fill up on those nights.

The Whale and Ale offers consistent quality and ambiance. The classic 1920's building encloses a very well done interior in the English pub style. The owner, Andrew Silber, is frequently on hand to make sure that your dining experience is satisfactory.

Britsh Pub Ambience
The Whale and Ale provides a great British pub air, the traditional dishes are great. Recommend the Traditional English Breakfast, the Ploughman's Plate and curry dishes. The roasted tomato soup (when offered) is absolutely fabulous. If you want a wonderful fish and chips this is the place to go, great North Atlantic cod cooked in a beer batter...Yum! The pub has a fully stocked bar along with a good selection of wines, beers and hard cider.

More than Pub Grub
Classic English Pub Grub available. Shepherd's Pie etc. So is my favorite appetizer: Tandoori lamb chops. Prime rib. Great salads, including Miso Duck Salad. Friendly place. Extensive tap beer menu. Community supporter.

Charming pub with great vibe
Friday night and restaurant filled by 6:30. Glad to have reservations to eat before going to see play at Little Fish Theater around the corner. The environment is very charming and we were very pleased with the food and beer on tap. The 10 ounce prime rib was delicious, cooked properly and the right portion. The sand dabs were also wonderfully cooked and served hot with rice and flavorful steamed vegetables. Real Hungarian strudel for dessert. The live music was a perfect background and not intrusive to our conversation.

Go to the Whale and Ale!
Went here for the first time for dinner on a Sunday night. Had a reservation, but it was not busy. I understand Thur-Sat can be busy. service was excellent. Food was pretty good. I had the prime rib, which, I don't know how a restaurant can get wrong, but at any rate had good flavor. I ordered it medium rare and it was done perfectly. Tried to talk him out of ordering it, but my son got the burger. He liked it, but it was expensive for a burger. He won't order it again when we return. My wife and daughter shared an appetizer and the Shepherd's Pie. We all tried the pie and it was delicious.

The food is always exceptional at Whale & Ale. We usually eat Thanksgiving and other special dinners, but sometimes lunch. Never disappointed.

Better than expected
Looking for something different before the Cirque show. Hadn't spent much time in San Pedro before so took a chance. Expected a chain like atmosphere for pub food and instead found a real neighborhood pub. British ale on tap and traditional pub food. My wife had the steak and mushroom pie and I chose bangers and mash. My daughter chose from the kids menu and since she's on a vegetarian kick she went with the safe grilled cheese and chips which we insisted she eat with vinegar. We arrived and the place was nearly empty but when we finished our meal the place was completely packed. The service was good and the ambiance was more real than forced like you find at a chain. Definitely recommend if you like neighborhood charm and comfort food.
